MASTERING SOFTWARE!

hey, can anyone tell me whats the Mercedes Benz of Mastering software that is mac compatible? It's because no matter how good my friend and I think are mix is, in L.P, when we import stuff into itunes the Levels in the Itune Meter is ALWAYS, VERY very low, like it's very mild, but when I play an "Industry" song that's done "professionally" (As If I don't have Logic Pro 7.1) the levels in Itune meter are RADICAL, and are almost literally jumping off the meter. I assume this has something to do with Mastering? How do I achieve this? what would you guys suggest if somone wanted to exercise EVERY aspect there is in music production. I just need some general advice....thanking you guys in advance

A.K.A Dr. Beatzzz

Let me first say that everyone has an opinion, and I am in no way saying my is the best. I have tried to give you several options to choose for. If you want further elaboration I would be glad post more information.
Peak is good, perhaps great but it’s not the Mercedes Benz of mastering software. The program that is considered a standard in mastering is Sonic Solutions (although they have changed the name recently). This program last time I checked was five or six thousand with all the plug-ins (but it is probably more money). Sonic also makes plugins for Pro Tools mastering but the bundle runs around $3,00. There are a few others, but several of the projects I have worked on used this program.
Most of the mastering labs I have used or know something about, still prefer using analog outboard gear. Some of the best mastering labs have custom made multi-band compressors, limiters, and eq's that when all added up cost hundreds of thousands of dollars (if not into the millions). They then record to digital again using higher quality CD's with apogee dac's (or better, either way big money). So if you want to sound like the big top 40 hits, you might be able to come close with years of practice but only close.
Mastering is an art form and many people are not good at it. While my clients like what I do, I still need to work at it.
If you want to sound like a good underground hardcore punk, drum and base, rock, alternative, etc plug-ins are important.
In the more affordable realm, peak audio is a great program and what I use frequently when the project I am working on cannot afford pro mastering. The plug-ins that come with Peak (the expensive version) are good, but there are better plug-ins available. There are many choices (like the previous post said UAD and TC Electronic both have awesome plugs but a new TC card will cost you around $700-$1200 and although it does come with mastering software it does not including the system 600 mastering software that I like which is another $500-$900 depending on what you get.) Some will insist on Waves plug-ins and there are plenty of people that swear by them. I like them, but they are a bit cold for me because I like to color my mix. For cheap quick fixes when I have no time to work on a master I like Izotope (pretty astounding for the price of $199).
The URS plug-ins are good if you know what you are doing,
but the two software companies I use the most for mastering are UAD and TC Electronic, specifically the plug-ins that work with their audio cards.
I use both the UAD mastering plug-ins (just got them, they are $500 extra), but I am looking to by the TC Electronic
One overlooked thing is to have quality monitors. I like Mackie's fine, but they have troubles with the low end (100hz and below) unless they are in certain rooms). I use dynaudio monitors with a dynaudio sub. I usually do not listen with the sub on until I want to verify that I don't have too much bass in the mix.
Lastly, learning how to mix is important. Frequently people boost too much when cutting is always better. Instrument placement, tasteful use of reverb, and good instrument levels are important. Frequently, people put way too much 200-100hz in their mix. Boosting every instrument is not a good idea. Learning which frequencies are best boosted and cut for each instrument is important. Let the bass guitar do its job, while guitar is a mid range instrument (if you want them to cut through the mix) synths, cymbals high frequency etc. I often use a spectrum analysis plug in to assure my mix is not lacking in a particular frequency, or is too dominant in one. If you hand a mastering lab a mess, they can do great things, but they cannot work miracles if your mix is bad.
If you don't have money, try Izotope with Logic. Also look up online tips on mastering on a budget.
I hope this helps a bit.

  • Can GB work with mastering software like Izotope Ozone?

Okay...finding crazy way to work here, but I can see some light.
I'm using a Line 6 Tone Port inteface with Gearbox and Abledon mixing/tracks to record on my intel iMac...(Abledon being a bit more to my way of working similar in respects to Sonar/Cakewalk with PC's).
I found easy enough...I can drag an .aiff song file made there into Garageband, but I don't see an easy way to add my mastering Ozone software to tracks. Oddly and ironically...I had Final Cut Express with Soundtrack preinstalled in my intel system...and I found I can drag the .aiff sound track into Soundtrack as well...and lo and behold, there in audio...in the effects bin was my Izotope Ozone listed as an option. Worked fine...but,
...is it possible if Ozone is accessible in Soundtrack to master...that I can somehow add this effect/plug in to Garageband??? I suppose I can drag from one .aiff song file to the other...but would be cool if more convenient to do it with GB...
    thanks
    Larry

To repeat my answer from your other post,
    To use Ozone in GB:
Open your Info, choose Master, open Details, and click on the blank effect section (w/ the checkbox beside it) and choose Ozone.
You can use it the same way for individual tracks if you want to.
(of course, I'm assuming that you have its Audio Unit (AU) installed.)

  • Mastering plug-in or upgrade to Logic Studio?

I'm currently trying out the oZone demo & like several of it's features-although some things about it are quirky. I'm wondering if I should spring for it-or something similar-or upgrade to full blown Logic. Anyone have experience with oZone or any other mastering software? Any idea how this compares to the expanded features in Logic Studio?
I should mention, I especially like the way inserting the plug on the master bus "beefs up" the entire mix-the full spectrum seem more intelligible (if that term applies to instrumental music).
    Thanks in advance.
    -d

I currently just made the decision and got ozone versus Studio pro.
I'll let you know but preliminary signs work in Ozone's favor.
The presets may be a little heavy handed, but tweaking them is easy and my first client was very happy that he didn't have to spend big $$$ on real mastering on a demo album.
The app runs without a glich when used on a two track mix, with my somewhat underpowered setup.

  • MP3 as a data file stora

I bought an mp3 "Zen nano plus". Everything was great. Today i went to format a friend computer I had my Nano with me so I said "I will save your documents on my nano we'll save a CD" so I went into the Windows Explorer and I add his documents. When I finally finish my job. I tried to put back the data files on his computer but I couldn't. It says "Please insert a CD-Rom when I was double clicking onto the removal disk F. I went back at home to try it. Same think at home, I unplugged it and I turn power on. Creative apear ... Zen nano plus ... and it shut down!
What's the problem in the little book it say "You can also transfer data files using ..."

I just had a thought that he may have packet writing software installed on the pc. I had trouble years ago with packet writing software. It was trying to take over the pc. After I uninstalled it the problems ended. For those who don't know, packet writing software is used to write to CDRW disks using drag and drop. It is often unreliable though and can be quite problematic. I suggest that people write to CDR and CDRW disks using mastering software such as Nero or Easy CD Creator, and to uninstall all packet writing software.

  • Playing Multiple sound file simultanyoustly

Is there a Professional audio product that could fit my needs ? I want to have a soundcard that can play a lot of soundfile at the same time. Maybe 10 to 20 wave or mp3 at the same time.

You should have wrote little more specific what are you going to do but I assume you're going to make your own music (record different instruments etc.).
So, you mean multitracker/sequencer, products like Cakewalk Sonar and Steinberg Cubase.
These I mentioned can play 'unlimited' amount of audio files (all depends on your system capabilities). These can handle MIDI files too.
If you are going to buy a Creative Pro (E-MU) line product you get LE (limited edition) version of some of this type of recording/mixing/mastering software bundled with the card. I don't know the full capabilities of these stricted applications but I suppose they can fit into your requirements.
    Go to
    E-MU
site and take a closer look of the cards.
    Specifications for
    Sonar LECubase LE
which are bundled with E-MU sound cards. See more from Software section on E-MU card sheets on their site.
If you meant to output frome those 10 - 20 analog (stereo) sources simultaenously and individually then, (almost) every card can handle them internally, but you need atleast two or more soundcards with each having lots of stereo output channels available to get all that sound out (all sources individually, without interferencig with each other). I would recommend then 1 or two PCI cards with external box (like E-MU 1820) and/or types of FireWire (like RME FireFace 800) or USB cards then.
You can ofcourse split one analog 6.1 output system (eg. 3 output ports) to three stereo output channels using ASIO drivers, but you need then an ASIO compatible player (!! ASIO is not always multiclient driver so there may be restrictions if same model sound cards are used) (i.e. Audigy 2 is a 6.1 card --> I can get 3 separate stereo output channels into use by using ASIO drivers with two of the three players --> I can therefore output from 3 different sources simultaenously to 3 different outputs without they mixes with each other)

  • Burning cds with information on them

I burn cds real easy from my iTunes application. I have a cd player in my car that can read the artist, title and album. The problem is every time I burn a cd and put it in my car it only says track one, two, three ect. Is there any way I can change this to show the info on my cd player? Any information is appreciated.
    iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

CD-TEXT is what you're looking for. iTunes doesn't support it, and it's been requested very often for years...
Most other CD mastering software, such as Toast, offer the ability to add CD-TEXT to audio CDs.

  • Recording multi-track violin

Hi, I've been laying down a production using Logic Pro 7 in which I have recorded singly, three viola tracks, and six violin tracks through a Rode NT5 condenser mic, via an M-Audio 1814 Firewire into a PowerMac G5 2.3 with 4.5 Gb of Ram.
Each track is recorded at as high an input as possible without more than a very little clipping of the signal. Each track, singularly, sounds fine with no signal deterioration where the instruments are played loud. However, when I put the 'nine' tracks together, I tend to get a lot of signal overload and break-up.
What's causing this? Do I need more Ram? Is it the hardware I'm using? The problem is worsened when I use any EQ or Limiter.
Anyone had this problem before? If so, I'd appreciate some help.
    Thanks
    Terry, Ohio USA

    Terry,
What you're really talking about is considered, in part, "mastering". There is a ton of information here, as well as other forums, as to how to best go about that, as far as attempting at doing it yourself.
But yes, setting the overall level of each track in a CD, is usually handled in mastering software, such as Waveburner.
FYI, that is the very short explanation... there's actually a lot more to this, but that should get you started.

  • Will recording in HD mean it can only play in hd dvd players?

im looking into getting a sony hdr-hc7 and i was wondering if i record my video in hd then make it into a DVD using iDVD if it would only be able to play in HD dvd players and if you had to burn the video to HD dvd discs? does the HD mean itll be better quality than regular minidv but u can still play it only a regular tv. or will you have to have an hd tv if u want to see what you recorded in HD. so i guess im asking 2questions. one about the HD DVD and then the other by just hooking up the camera to a tv. thanks

Well, most HDV cameras out there have the ability to convert to SD (standard definition) as you capture to your hard drive. I have a Sony FX1 and it has this. Not sure about the HC7, but probably. You can look in the manual under downconvert or something of the like. Its a setting in the menu system of the camera.
Usually what I do is shoot everything in HDV and then use the downconvert system to edit as I rarely have anyone requesting HD for the final piece. You could skip capturing SD and capture HD and then edit and export your piece back to tape (for viewing on an HDTV) or out to an HD version of quicktime (for web or computer viewing).
To put something out to HD DVD, you need an HD DVD recorder and blank media (both extremely expensive whether you go with Blu-Ray or HD DVD). Oh, and you will also need some High Def DVD mastering software.
    Anyway, there's my 2 cents.

  • HELP soundblaster live platinum replacement installation

hello i have recently formatted my computer forgetting that i had damaged my installation cd for my soundblaster li've platinum and im wondering where to get a replacement. i have tried drivers from creative but it still doesnt work, i have had it for 7 years, when i first had it it was on win 98 but then i went on to xp and most of the stuff went on and i updated the rest and it worked with no probs but now nothing (it had adobe reader, proddy parrot, keytar, mixer etc.). please helpthanx

Search for badboy's installation ISO thread and you'll find a link to where he's getting the files hosted now.
You want the Audigy /SBLi've5. cd ISO. That includes the latest stuff for the Li've including the full RemoteCenter installation. The SBLi've Unipack download from Creative has less models of the card in the inf, doesn't include the 254 patch for the Li'veDri've and the other downloads (with the exception of PlayCenter) won't install unless a previous version is already installed (they're only updates). The cd I mentioned has the whole package you need. It is an ISO image so you just burn it to a cdr with Nero, the free IMGBURN, or some other cd mastering software.
It is also available for purchase by calling Creative.
The original cd you lost includes Windows 2000's Li'veWare which needed to be patched for XP with a seperate download that Creative no longer offers. It may still be on driverguide.com. I think it was called SBLi'veXPUpdate.exe or something like that. There was an older version only for the 4. cards and a newer one for all the cards.
The other stuff you mentioned was on other cd's included with the retail Platinum box. Most of that is outdated now anyway and some of it can conflict with Windows. I remember ProdyParrot would interfere when I still had a dialup connection. It would change something so I could no longer disconnect from the icon. It would be greyed out. I don't know whether the CubaseVST 4 Creative Edition works on XPSP2 or not. The new cd I mentioned will not contain these extras anyway.
I used to enjoy that stupid parrot and Dr. Sbatso!

  • Blank driver disk

    Hi!
I know this problem has been already writen somewhere, and I've seen it, but haven't found exact solution for me, so..
I have a new intel iMac. I have a Leopard disk, which i bought separetle, so I have only 1 dvd.
some time ago installed boot camp and Vista. everything worked well.
today i deleted vista partition via boot camp and created a new one to install xp.
installation was ok, restarted in windows, inserted a mac os disk and it's blank!!
    =(
I haven't yet installed a single thing in windoews or went to the internet, so it's completly new XP.
    please help!

It would most definitely help if you could tag your posts with your current Mac model and OS version.
If you have a late '07 model, the Boot Camp driver disc is part of either the install media or the "drop-in" Leopard disc that came with the unit. If you have any of the snow-white models, you had to have purchased Leopard to have the DVD. Either way, the DVD is multi-session, meaning it is divided into at least two logical pieces. In this case, it's exactly two pieces. The larger piece is Mac OS X, and it's only visible from the Mac side. The Boot Camp drivers make up a smaller piece that's only visible from Windows. The drive should mount the correct session on the disc once the disc inserted. If it doesn't, you can:
    a) Apply a firmware update, if applicable: Some 2006 and earlier 2007 MacBooks (including Pros) and iMacs were shipping with SuperDrives that exhibited performance and reliability issues. Apple published an updater for affected models which required OS 10.4 to run. This "SuperDrive Firmware Update 2.1" was at one point available from Apple Support Downloads, and would only install if the machine needed the update. The updater has since been yanked, without any warning or explanation.
    b) Check the disc for problems: Any scratches, scuffs, or marks on a disc will generate problems for either platform. A little water on a strong and smooth, yet slightly damp cloth (read: not a paper towel or a typical terry-cloth towel) will take care of almost any schmutz. Wipe the disc gently along the radius, from center to edge.
    c) Re-burn the disc, if possible: It's possible that your particular disc came from a bad run. You'll need a dual-layer drive and mastering software (Windows or Mac-based) to make a complete copy, as the disc is packed with about 9 GB of data. The software also needs to be aware of hybrid formatting to copy both sessions.
    d) Get it fixed: If all else fails, the disc or drive is bad and needs replacement. Get to an Apple Store or AASP (that's Apple Authorized Service Provider) ASAP. Call Apple as well if you are under the standard warranty or an AppleCare plan.

  • A way to test DDP image project (DVD-9)?

When you use for example Gearsoft Pro Mastering software to create DDP images for your DVD-9 project (you created VIDEO_TS folder with Encore CS3) and set the correct layer break for it, is there a way to somehow test the DDP images with the set layer break?
It would be nice to test it by burning the project to a DVD-9 with the layer break set to test how it looks like and how it works, before bringing the DDP files to the replication factory and making thousands of DVDs for distribution of a product you haven't been able to properly test how it works?
    Thank you.

    >Double-click on a PGC.
    Or press ENTER.
This should - assuming you are looking at a PGC - take you to a screen where you can see all the info you need. For full details, open PGCEdit documentation from the Help file, and in the search box, type "layer break".
Ok, double click what PGC where? Sorry to be a bit pain in the *** but could you be a bit more specific? :) Opened also the documentation but couldn't find the "layer break".
    >See http://www.gearsoftware.com/howtoguides/restoreddpimage.cfm
    and adapt as necessary.
Ok, let's assume that the DDP went right. What about burning the project straight from GEAR? You have the layer break set and everything is ready in the project. Then you click that "write image to disc" buttonm, this should be the exactly same DVD that is being recorded to the DDP, right? It did burn the project to the DVD, but when I examine the burned DVD in GEAR's Disc info panel, it says it is DVD-ROM and the layer break is at sector 2092896, which means it didn't make it to the point where it was in the project which was at sector 188480. So, is it possible to burn the DVD in Gear as DVD-Video with the settings in the project file? This would be I think the fastest way to test the layer break etc. in the dvd?

The Nokia 3720 classic is a IP54 level water,
Not even close to good enough, LCD screen will crack, water will go in through the jack/charger ports..
The phone i describe has no external ports just 4-5 little pins which can't let water in or out of the device, the docking station will connect via these 4 - 5 pins for data transfer and recharging...., IPX8 standard, all the electronics are epxoyed with a glue to stop real bad shocks from drops and bangs, along with a silicon case and all the other preventative meausres means this little phone is going to outlive you.
in combination with heart rate external bluetooth connection, really what more could you want... only the Sonim comes close in terms of perfection but if it managed to pack all of above, then it would be simply wow... I don't think there's enough people who work for nokia who actually go camping, backpacking, hiking, i'm pretty sure that if i told them one day
on a holiday you might drop your phone into the swimming pool, ok fine it's a mistake but damn, there goes your $$$$ N7 or N900 or even a HTC or Iphone.... not this, you'd yell to the first person you see in the pool, hey mate can i have my phone back, don't worry about the water damage, i'll get it back on insurance after a small lie stopping the person from running off with it (in fear of the now useless mobile phoned killed by water, making an attempt to steal be useless)
The person gets their phone back and carries on about his day, it drops out of your pocket, how many times you ran over it because you happened to leave it behind the back tire. oh no i ran over my phone, the tough casing and the epoxy keeping it nice and safe, except for superficial damage cosmetic, the screen and phone should be working still able to make that call or send out GPS info....
Sorry nothing comes close by any company (except Sonim) in terms of what they can do... maybe even a portable charger turn it to recharge like on LED dynamos. nah maybe not.

  • Regarding Backup of Referenced Masters: What Software do you use?

Hi, I have a portion of my library stored on an external drive via referenced masters. I back up these image files to another external drive. Currently I do this manually - I just copy the folders using the Finder. But I'm interesting in a program that can automatically backup these files incrementally and keep the backup up to date. What does everybody here use? Lacie Silverkeeping? Thanks.

    GraemeSmith wrote:
The referenced masters are stored on an external drive, not the internal drive (which is backed up with Time Machine). Is it even possible to use Time Machine on an external drive?
Sure. Time Machine can backup whichever hard drives are plugged in to the machine on which Time Machine is running. This is to be distinguished from drives attached to the network, via Airport Extreme, for example. Time Machine won't get those.
Also the backup drive I want to use for the referenced masters is different that the Time Machine drive.
Gotcha. That obviously rules out Time Machine.

  • How do i consiolidate my photo masters in Aperture 3. I have a vault from Aperture 2 but 3 will not access it.

I use Aperture for photo editing and management and had been working in Aperture 2. I created a vault on my external HD to store my masters in. I had done something to my computer (not sure what) and ended up wiping my internal HD and reinstalling all of my software. After that I was not able to access my vault so most of my masters are basically gone. I attemped to move them with no luck. Frustrated by this point I upgraded to Aperture 3 thinking it would help me be able to get into the vault only to find out that 3 can not consolidate 2 vaults. I do not know what to do at this point but am really bummed to think that my masters may be gone forever. A hard way to learn that nothing in more secure than just saving the photos to DVD prior to Aperture...
Can anyone give me a clue on how I can recover my masters?

I don't have Aperture 2 so that I could check, but Aperture 3 vaults in  Mt. Lion do show the version number in the Finder, like this:
I will put Aperture 2 on another machine and that work on restoring the vault from there,
If you did all available upgrades and your vault is recent, it probably will have been created with the latest available Aperture upgrade, AP 2.1.4.
If you can restore the library this way, back it up, and then rebuild it, before moving it to your SL machine. To rebuild an Aperture library, hold down the Option and Command keys while opening your library in Aperture 1.5 or 2, then click the Rebuild Now button..
