Matching a PCIe graphics card w/ proper PCIe slot question.

Hi all,
By all i mean Harm and Jim - the hardware wizards!   One more hardware question....
In comparing two Supermicro mb's, the X8SAX and the X8STE, i noticed that the X8SAX has two PCIe 2.0  x16 slots while the X8STE has one x8 PCIe 2.0 in a x16 slot.
So... my question is... If i'm going to use a high end graphics card like the GTX 260 or a lower end Geforce 9500 GT, buying the X8STE mb would be a mistake because both cards are x16 and putting them in the x8 using a x16 slot would degrade the speed in half - correct?

Harm,
Of the Supermicro i7 single socket mb's, the X8STE would have been ideal with 1-x16PCIe, 3-x4PCIe and 2-PCI slots if the x16PCIe slot had 16 lanes and the mb had no graphics. Also, With the X8SAX, if you are using double wide graphic card, you are covering up a PCIe slot leaving you with ony one more on the mb.
But why use two video cards? What is the value added?
I like many editor's, I use dual monitors during the video production process so i can see Pr, Ps, Ae or Sb at the same time. I find it more productive and convenient. I have been toying with the idea of  getting a third monitor. But with this mb, it would leave me with no usable slots other than the two 64bit PCI-X slots.
Although Supermicro mb's are great, I own an older dual Xeon NLE system, they just don't any boards - currently - that satisfy me. Both boards leave you wanting a little. But I would agree with you that the X8SAX is still the better choice.
In any case, would you agree that putting an x16PCIe graphics card in the X8STE with only 8 lanes in the x16PCIe slot would have been a waste?
Just for curiosity, what Supermicro single i7 mb would you have chosen?

I have already posted this on another part of the forum.
Hi i have an M Audio Delta192 Audiophile soundcard which is not working fully
i have been on the phone to the M Audio technical support about this
my problem is apparently i need to put the pci Soundcard card into the first slot after my graphics card which would be slot no 2
my graphics card has a fan on top which covers pci slot no 2 so the next available slot is slot 3 which is where i have my soundcard now
a lot of the functions available are greyed out in the M Audio Delta control panel this is the software used to control the parameters of the soundcard
is this right do i have to install my Soundcard in slot no 2 for it to work correctly
if so is there any way around this
my graphics card is a ATI Radeon 9800 XT
if there is no way around this are there any agp cards that i can get that dont have a great big fan on top that covers pci slot 2 that are good quality & can run 2 monitors
i cant seem to find any

    Hi J D Knight
I'm Pretty sure it is this is what it has under my system profiler
    ATI Radeon 9800 XT:
    Chipset Model: ATY,R360
    Type: Display
    Bus: AGP
    Slot: SLOT-1
    VRAM (Total): 256 MB
    Vendor: ATI (0x1002)
    Device ID: 0x4e48
    Revision ID: 0x0000
    ROM Revision: 113-A14404-123
this was the graphics card installed when i bought the powermac
i understand the reasons for the fan as i am led to believe it is a powerfull card
but my main use is for audio is it true about the pci slots do i need to have my soundcard in slot 2 as M-Audio have told me if so then i do need to change my graphics card so i can get my soundcard working as it should
the only thing i need is my dual screens

  • Graphics card on secondary PCIe slot PUE 975X

I changed my graphics card slot to the secondary PCI express slot. But now none of my operating systems will boot correctly with the nvidia graphics driver. Only when set on failsafe mode or vesa drivers (linux), is the only way to render the desktop environment. Is there any way to have my graphics card on the 2nd slot and for it to work correctly? I am using a Nvidia Geforce 6800GS.

You are right. Using the 975X PUE, you can use 2 nVidia cards in the PCIe 16X slots(they will run at 8x) and should be able to be used with 3 monitors.  The 2 slots can be used in a crossfire configuration(2 ATI cards);ATI's answer to SLI. Using nVidia cards, you should be able to use 2 PCIe cards and get the 3 monitors since they obviously would not be in crossfire(and not in SLI since the board can not do SLI). Your PCI card is an ATI chipset and the PCIe card is nVidia. Since you have both nVidia and ATI drivers installed and being used, I think you maybe getting a conflict (which is likely causing the issue).  If you had PCI nVidia card, it might work.
When cards are in Crossfire or in SLI mode, only 2 monitors will be supported. If SLI or Crossfire is disabled, you should be able to get up to 4 monitors.  See if you can borrow your friends nVidia card and try it out. I would advise you to uninstall any ATI drivers.  You are going to need an additional nVidia card(PCIe or PCI).

  • MSI X48C Platinum - Graphic card identification problem

    Hi,
I have been having this problem for a long time which I still haven't been able to solve.
When I plug my graphics card to the PCI-E slot 1 (Slot closest to the cpu) I get nothing on my monitor. I have to plug it on to the  PCI-E slot 2 (PCI-E 4) to get anything on the monitor. I am running Windows 7 (64bit) Professional.
With this configuration (That is, the graphics card being installed in slot PCI-E4) I am getting a lot of blue screen failures due to  graphics card being non-responsive, especially when running graphic intensive programmes.
Here are the details of my PC configuration.
Motherboard - MSI X48C Platinum (MSI MS 7353)
    RAM  - 6GB DDR3
    Processor - Intel Core 2 Quad Q9300  -  2500Mz
    BOIS - Version 7.4V
    Graphics card - Hightech Radeon HD4870  1GB DDR5
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks.
    Cris

    Hi go_for,
    Thanks for the reply.
I am using a Aerocool 750W  (model VP-750)power suppy and the graphics card is connected with 2 PCI-E power connectors from the power supply.
The problem is that it runs on the other pci-e slot not the first one. Could the first slot be defective?
    Thanks

  • Need help with power supply & graphics card upgrades

I have a HP Pavilion p6320y that I bought 8 months ago. AMD Phenom II x4820 Quad Core processor.   I play WoW and since the last big patch, have been suffering with low fps. I updated drivers and followed all the advice given to me by Blizz and finally figured out that my Nvidia GeForce 9100 (integrated graphics) isn't good enough anymore.
I checked my computer and discovered that I have a 300w power supply (12V) and read on another post here that something stronger than 300w is needed to run a decent graphics card.
    Now for my questions:
How much of a power supply can I upgrade to without hurting my computer, but will be enough to run a good card?
What would be a good graphics card for this computer?
I've been looking at the Nvidia GeForce GTX 460 1GB GDDR5 PCI Express graphics card and wonder if that will work on my computer.  Most of the nicer cards seem to be the PCI Express and I'm not sure if that will work.
Any advice will be most helpful. I have some experience with the inner workings of my PC and would like to fix this myself instead of running to the closest computer shop and paying someone else to. Thanks!
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

Well, you are starting out from a fairly low baseline with the integrated graphics. It will not cost much to have a substantial increase if all you want to do is run WoW without error messages. Yes, the 300w power supply is an issue and rules out any card that will require its own power (i.e. needs its own power cord like a hard drive) but there are several mid-grade cards that can run off bus power alone (i.e. just from the pci-e slot itself). Just taking a quick look at newegg.com I see the following:
    GeForce 9400 under $50
    Radeon HD 4650 under $50
    GeForce 9500GT a little over $50
Any of these should get you where you want to be and not require a PS upgrade. The slot you have available is a PCI Express x16 slot so don't look at AGP cards; they will not work. If you want to install the card you mention you need to get a better PSU.

  • Upgrading Mac Pro (2009) from to NVIDIA Quadro 4000, what PCI slot to use ?

I am upgrading my Mac Pro (2009) from the Nvidia GT120 (stock) to the Nvidia Quadro 4000 for Mac. The GT120 was installed in the PCI Slot #1 and I would like to install the Nvidia Quadro 4000 in the PCI Slot #2, that way the Fan in the Graphics Card (Quadro 4000) will have better air circulation, is there any limitation or recommendation regarding the PCI slot to use ?, thanks a lot

I have an early Mac Pro 3,1.
The user manual I downloaded states:
    Slot 1 PCI Express 2.0 16-lane
    Slot 2 PCI Express 2.0 16-lane
So I'm assuming that means both slots 1 and 2 are the same and it doesn't matter which of my two graphics cards go in which slots?
Also, my second graphics card is a Quadro 4000 which is for Adobe Applications that use the CUDA engine. I don't have any monitors hooked up to it.

There are no known issues between ur mobo and ur gfx card. Issues like these are moere chipset related then brand related.
Problem seems to be PSU related, an older 350w PSU will be unable to supply enough juice on 12v to feed a power hungry P4. Check the ammount of amps it delivers on the 12v rail(s). According to Intel specs u need at least 20 amps on 12v.
I don't think it's bios related. Bios issues rarely expose themselves in instabtable behavure.
Don't think it's Dx9 related, cus ur rig also freezes without using Dx9 extensions, eg surfing the internet.
The driver version u use is a decend one, and shouldn't cause the problems that you encounter.
I put my money on the PSU as trouble causer.
Good luck and keep us informed on ur progress.

  • Graphics Card Question Mac Pro

So I have one NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 with 512MB in my mac pro and I wanted to add one more card to my comp just wondering how this works.. For example, could I add the ATI Radeon HD 4870 and would the two work compatibly?
Or would I have to just grab another NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 with 512MB and double up on that?
There are 4 PCI Slots right? Anyway another question I had was I heard that you should make a drive designated just for rendering and keeping your files. It was actually Larry Jordan who said this. Anyway he was saying DO NOT partition your drive to create this extra drive for your Rendering Files/media.
So okay, what does that mean would I have to just buy another hard drive and put it in Bay 2 of my tower? Designating that just for what Larry Jordan was talking about?
Okay well thanks sorry this post is getting a little big -Nick

Well, to be precise: the current version of FCP on tiger and Leopard has some issues with some FxPlugs if you have more than one graphics card with monitors plugged into them. You can have a graphics card in all four slots, you just can't have monitors on them. I had the horsepower to drive 8 30" displays from 4 dual-head graphics cards. I took three of them out since they were fundamentally useless.
No one knows what the next rev of FCP on Snow Leopard will be capable of doing with more than one card and more than two monitors.
You want a drive in each bay if you're going to be doing video seriously and not as a hobby. If you can afford FCP for a hobby, you can afford the drives so get them anyway.
    You want the 4870 card.
You want all the RAM you can afford.

  • Powermac 1.25 MDD one or two graphics cards for dual display?

I currently have two displays running off of one ATI card. Would I be better off putting a second card in a free PCI slot to run display number two. I've noticed that the ATI card divides the 128 MB memory between the two displays. With a second card there would be more memory dedicated to each individual display.
Is this worth it or not? I have the extra card which i believe is an ATA 9200 PCI card.

If I wanted to, I could put a PCI graphics card in the next slot over from the AGP and run another monitor.

  • [MSI P35 Platinum] Graphics Card Slot

    Hello,
I just bought the MSI 560 GTX graphics card. My motherboard is MSI P35 Platinum so i was wondering if i can place the graphics card in the 2nd PCI-E slot or this could occure problems. This is my motherboard:
so my question is: can i put the graphics card in the YELLOW slot? Cause it won't fit in the upper PCI... Thanks

Quote from: Jack on 03-September-11, 19:12:09
Why doesn't it fit?  It should fit without problems.
Because of the I/O controller (i think this is it...)
Quote from: Jack on 03-September-11, 19:12:09
You can do that, however, in that slot, the video card will only get x4 lanes assigned to it (instead of x16 lanes in the primary PCI-Express slot).
And what difference does this make?

But if is insert the bouble width 8800GTS card in PCIe1, which is the first PCIe 2 x16, then I will cover the first PCIe x1 slot.
Anybody have any experience in using the PCI e 2 x16 slot called PCIe4? and then used the PCIe5 as the SLI card slot?

I have personally found a full 5% increase in sli performance by using blue/blue rather than one blue and one white. I don't know if it's just me or if this difference is universal.
    I second that...
my advice : put both of your graphic cards in 16x blue slots, your X-Fi in the free PCI-e 1x slot you should see between your graphic cards, and put your TV Tuner in the yellow slot. everything should be working ine that way

  • MSI graphics cards and MSI motherboards

Do MSI "tend" to match their graphics cards with their motherboards? .... would I benefit from matching an MSI graphics card with my K8T Neo2 motherboard?
    JLP

    Noooooooo, not at all.
I have some K8N neo2 platinum combined with an msi nx6800gt and although
i'm very happy with game performance, there are times i would expect more.
My GT has lots of problems when not running at stock.
Even at 365/1050 there is some stuttering (rarely, and for about 2 seconds) but
    still, there is.
It could as well have been any other brand.
And i bet it could have been a better o/cer.
The only thing i HIGHLY recommend msi gards, is their EXCELLENT bundle.
Mine came with 15 cds(!!!) :  DOOM 3, XIII, URU, Prince of Persia and many more.

  • Is graphic card upgrade on Satellite L300-21W possible?

    Hi!
I`m thinking to buy Toshiba Satellite L300-21W but i wat to play some games on it like Cod2 but I think that her serial graphic card is weak so my question is:
" CAN I REPLACE GRAPHIC CARD WITH BETTER ONE OR NOT( and with which one if you know)!?!?!??!"
    Thank you!

As far as I know graphic card on mobile computers cannot be upgraded. This is also described in follow document - http://aps2.toshiba-tro.de/kb0/TSB9401AX0001R01.htm
So if you want to play different games with your notebook pick up info about models with better graphic cards.
I can recommend you to check Satellite A300/A350 notebook models.
    Talk with your local dealer.

  • Is it possible to upgrade the graphics card on a Tecra A8 (PTA38E)?

The Intel integrated GMA 945 chipset on the Tecra A8 isn't quite coping with the demands I'm putting it under. (3D gaming...)
I know that laptops are severely restricted on space internally and that the purpose of the integrated chipset is to conserve power, but is it possible to install a stand alone graphics card instead of using integrated graphics?
If so, can you reccommend a suitable graphics card and any companies that would have the expertise to install the card... (I'd imagine it'd be a little bit beyond my abilities)

Oh Well thats my question answred. I guess I'll just have to go and get a dedicated gaming desktop now too... Sigh :)
A good product idea for graphics card companies might be a removable graphics card that you can slot into the card slot or usb port on the computer. Would the data transfer rate be fast enough to cope with this of does a graphics card always have to be directly on the motherboard?
