Matching router & switch L2 settings

Hi,
I need to connect a C3825 router who's config. I can't change who's L2 config is,
interface GigabitEthernet0/1
duplex full
speed 100
media-type rj45
negotiation auto
to a switch model WS-C3560E-48TD-S.
Is this the correct config. for this switch port,
int gi 0/1
switchport access vlan 25
switchport mode access
switchport nonegotiate (No DTP frames being sent ie. no trunking negotiation done)
duplex full
speed 100
Why does the router fix the duplex and speed & still have "negotiation auto" - it seems contradictory.
There's some info on this at,
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/prod/collateral/routers/ps5855/prod_qas0900aecd8016a953.html
- but it doesn't seem to answer this particular question.
Regards, MH

Hi,
In another context, in the case of the 7200 VXR with NPE G1 (although i'll double check this for the 3800 series), the auto-negotiation option (via the "negotiation auto" command) is only effective when using the GBIC media, it is used to enable the IEEE 802.1z Gigabit Ethernet (1000 Mbps) auto-negotiation protocol, thus the auto-negotiation feature is not supported when using the rj-45 media type and will be ignored if enabled.
[edit] After double checking, with the 2800 and the 3800 series, the "negotiation auto" is actually different than the G1, and more over it is actually totally removed in newer IOS, i am running 12.4(3g) on a 2821 router and the command is decommissioned, accordingly i advice you to do an IOS upgrade, the main problem here is according to Cisco on the IOS you are operating there are no standards defined for 1000BASE-T (RJ-45) operation without auto-negotiation.
[edit] Another thing that seems to confuse you, the DTP on the switch side, routers doesn't support DTP, thus the DTP configuration has no significance when connecting a switch to a router, in case you needed to configure a switchport connected to a router as a trunk port, you can't use DTP and you have to configure it manually as a trunk.

Mohammed Mahmoud.

  • New router (switched from Linksys to Netgear 750 - HP J4680 printer all in one - and MAC

My husband puchase a new router - (we were told our old router failed on us) - we had no problems setting up the netgear 750 from the linksys router we originally had - we have a MACBook Pro
My HP printer J4680 - ran beautifully  before the router switch - now will only work when directly connected from MAC to printer.
We have had several people troubleshoot for us -( we live in the country - no IT personnel nearby) - no one can seem to get the connection going between the two devices - I reinstalled the printer - read and reread the troubleshooting manual on both router and printer - and performed all the recommendations listed. The basic setup instructions on the HF printer say that despite the proximity of the printer and the router the signal in only fair and that it appears to have a "security" issue - I turned off the firewall settings on computer - no change in status.
we are contemplating returning the Netgear 750 for another linksys - could someone please tell me how or if we can solve this problem w/o having to return the router?
We purchased this particular router for the MAC compatability - the wireless printer is fairly new <<5yrs old and never had any problems w/it.
IT REALLY APPRECIATE ANY ADVICE I CAN GET!! THANX - maggiemae03815

    Welcome to the forums maggiemae03815
I saw your post about the connection issues you are having with your new router, Mac computer and Officejet J4680. I understand you have done some troubleshooting already however, I have a suggestion or two for you to try.
    On your Mac, try:
Mac OS X: How to reset the printing system
    Repair disk permissions
    Restart the Mac
Re-add the printer (do not use the AirPrint driver)
    Test print
Next contact the router company or your internet service provider to check the settings on your new router. There may be a setting that is blocking the connection to your printer:
Network name and password need to have no spaces or punctuation
If using WPA2 security, switch to WPA personal
Dual broadcast Wireless b/g/n (printer will only connect to g)
Mac filter needs to be turned off
Firewall settings need to be at there default settings, or set to a lower security
    Multicasting "on"
Following ports need to be un-blocked:
    Incoming (UDP) ports : 137, 138, 161, 427
    Outgoing (TCP) ports : 137, 139, 427, 9100, 9220, 9500
I hope my post was informational!

  • How to use a Westell 7500 as a router-switch ?

I have an extra Verizon Westell 7500 DSL modem router (A90-750015-07). How do I turn it into a router-switch that will take an ethernet (not DSL) network feed (with internet access) and distribute it among a few devices and put those devices into some kind of sub-network so they see each other? I'm not using technical terms here - please teach me.
My wife is going to rent a small temporary office that provides internet access via a socket in the wall. Let's assume it's a typical RJ-45 ethernet socket. The internet speed might actually be pretty good - maybe 30Mbs down and very fast up. The total internet capacity is shared with other temporary offices in the facility, but let's assume we'll have enough for our needs.
If the only thing I bring is a single computer, I could use a J-45 ethernet cable to plug its network card directly into this socket and be done. But I'll be bringing at least two computers and a small printer/scanner. Both computers will need to share the internet access, and both computers and the printer/scanner will need to "see" each other. (Just like at home.)
So, if I plug the extra Westell 7500 into the network wall socket and then my PCs and printer into the Westell, I should get what I need here, yes? How do I do this exactly, step-by-step?
I have experimented at home and have maybe 10% success. At home, I don't have an ethernet socket in the wall, but I do have my current (not Westell) modem-router, and it has an unused LAN socket, which I am pretending is the office's ethernet socket. I connected a test computer to the Westell 7500 and logged onto the Westell 7500's embedded server (192.168.1.1), changed its VersaPort from "LAN ethernet port" to "WAN uplink port", connected the newer modem-router's unused LAN socket to the Westell 7500's E1/Uplink socket with a J45 cable, went to the Westell 7500's "Advanced" page and ran "Detect WAN Configuration". That changed the Westell 7500's "WAN uplink port Settings Protocal" from PPPoE to Routed IP. The Westell 7500 now also says its "Broadband Connection Type" is "Routed Bridge".
The test computer connected to the Westell 7500 shows it is connected to the Westell 7500, but it cannot connect all the way through to the internet. At the start, the newer modem-router shows the Westell is connected to it, and the newer modem-router has given the Westell a DHCP address of 192.168.1.5. But after a few minutes, the newer modem-router doesn't show the Westell any more. If I re-run Detect WAN Configuration on the Westell 7500, it says "Automatic Protocol Detecion is in progress" but then "DHCP server was found ... PPPoE server not found", and then the newer modem-router shows the Westell 7500 again as 192.168.1.5. But the test computer does not have internet access.
What exactly should I do with the additional settings in the Westell 7500 to make this work?
If there's a great web site to explain this to me, please point me there.
    Thanks.

  • Airport extreme won't work without router/switch

    Hi all,
I'm a bit dumbfounded here and am hoping you can give me some answers.  I've been having connectivity issues, specifically with random pages not loading while on wifi (all devices).  They work just fine on my iPhone through LTE so I decided to try and isolate the issue to what hardware was causing my issues.
    Previous setup:
Cisco DPQ3212 VOIP modem -> wired to legrand 10/100 router/switch (wired only) -> wired to Airport Extreme -> Airport Express (set to extend range).
I decided to try and eliminate the router/switch and start from scratch using only the modem and Extreme since that's the simplest setup.
I reset the Extreme to factory settings and unplugged it.  Then I turned off the Modem (pulled power, etc.).  I let both sit for a while to forget anything they may have been remembering.  I then connected the ethernet, plugged in the modem, waited for it to get situated, and then plugged in the Extreme.  Setup went fine, but I got 'no internet' and 'no dns' errors.  Those went away randomly but the ip address I got was 169.xxx... so something was obviously was amiss.
I decided to go even simpler.  Connected iMac directly to modem, reset the modem and voila, I had working internet.  Thinking I did something wrong, I reset everything again and tried the Extreme setup.  Same issue with connectivity.  No internet and a bad IP.  Tried the same thing with the Express and got the same errors, etc.  Tried switching DHCP & Nat, Bridge Mode, you name it, nothing seemed to work.  Airport utility shows green for the Airport but amber for the internet.
So I gave up.  I connected the wired router/switch back up, reset everything, and it works again without a hiccup.
    Summary:
    1.  Internet works when modem is connected directly to iMac.
    2.  Internet works fine connected wirelessly through Extreme (or Express) wired to the router/switch wired to modem.
    3.  Internet will NOT work when modem connected directly to Extreme or Express, despite factory resets.
So help me out... how can this possibly be happening????

Sorry for the super slow response.  Shortly after posting the question my wife had a baby so I've been a bit preoccupied!
    I'm using the following:
    Airport Extreme:  5th Generation A1408 (version 7.6.4)
Airport Express:  Current generation A1392 (version 7.6.4)
    (if it matters) Legrand 10/100 4 port Router/Switch (http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=1&ved=0CB8QFjAA&url =http%3A%2F%2Fwww.legrand.us%2F~%2Fmedia%2FE0E9D84B8E4E4F0EAF6DE2577C23AD7F.ashx &ei=x0rEU8aMHcnjoAT3qYCgBw&usg=AFQjCNGDfOvPP4Dd9k1Xx6FVDkNJi0DOrw&bvm=bv.7081008 1,d.cGU)
I don't have access to a plain switch or crossover cable unfortunately.
And yep, I'm using the WAN port.  I get a green light every once in a while, but it really just doesn't work unless I add the other router back in there.
I have been taking the battery out and letting it rest for 30 mins each time.
FWIW, I'm doing all of this due to webpages not loading correctly.  I did a trace route to discussions.apple.com and the results show something is obviously amiss.  Here's what it says:

  • Fail to sftp to Router/Switch for remote IOS/config upgrade

I have ssh2 enabled on a cisco3750 & 7204 running IOS 12.2 & 12.4 respectively both with "ip scp server enable" configured, the idea being to sftp configs & IOS down to them. I can open a V2 ssh session to each device no problem. When I attempt to use an sftp client (Putty/SecureFX) to do the file transfer the router/switch appears to authenticate OK but then the session is disconnected. I have logging & ssh/scp debug enabled on each cisco box and attempt to open the sftp connection. In each case the authentication (using same credentials as for SSH2 session) is successful but then the connection just closes. Can anyone help?

They don't make it real clear, but what you actually do is source from the router/switch. From the router/switch, you connect to a server that supports SCP and pull the IOS down or push the config to the server. You use the normal copy commands, but specify scp instead of tftp or ftp.
    Hope that helps.

  • Modem and Router Switch off

Can I switch off both my Modem and Router at night, previously I was advised to keep my Router switched on 24/7 to maintain my speed, is this still the case with Infinity?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

The modem on Infinity holds the connection so i would personally advise you keep the modem plugged in, the router should be fine to switch off overnight.
However, there is also a power save feature on the home hub as well.

    Hi TomG101,
It seems that there is a configuration conflict on the virtual switch port .
Also I tested the command on my lab , it works .
For troubleshooting please  create a new virtual switch then try to configure again .
Any further information please feel free to let us know .

  • Imported files not matching FCE Playback / Render settings

The files were .mov exported to .mp4 using MPEG Streamclip. The .mov files were recorded from World of Warcraft's Mac Recording feature with the settings as:
    -Resolution: 640x400
    -Framerate: 29.97
    -Compession: H.264
There is an error of FCE not being able to import WoW's .mov files, so I use MPEG Streamclip. In streamclip, I export as "File -> Export to MPEG-4... -> H.264 Compression, 29.97 FPS, Turn off interlaced scaling"
Now FCE is able to import the footage. I can put it in the timeline, add effects, filters, etc. However, it needs a render after every single action. I suspect it's because the files' settings do not match the FCE Playback settings. I have read on another topic that instead of exporting to mpeg-4, to export to quicktime then DV PAL. But other users used footage from actual camcorders, mine are from a video game's recording feature, is there any difference?
What settings do FCE's Easy Setup have to be to match an exported file of Streamclip so the footage is native?

You don't have much choice in FCE: you must conform your movie to the standard DV settings; any other setting either will be rejected or will require continuous rendering.
So I suggest you to apply what you probably already read about using MPEG Streamclip: open your .mov file in MPEG Streamclip, then Export to QuickTime (cmd-E - NOT Export to DV!) with Compression: Apple DV-PAL (or Apple DV-DVCPRO/NTSC), Quality: 100%, fps: 25 for PAL or 29,97 for NTSC, Audio: uncompressed, Stereo, 48 KHz.
Only then, when imported to FCE, the .mov created by MPEG Streamclip will not require video nor audio rendering.

  • HT2494 Can the headphone port be used as Mic-In? Can it be switched in settings of the Mac to Mic-in?

Can the headphone port be used as Mic-In? Can it be switched in settings of the Mac to Mic-in?
Same question for Macbook Pro (particularly 2010 13" edition).

    what about the new iMac?
I use mic only when working in Sony Vegas and other Sony programs. I'd like to know if I can use proessional Mic with the new iMac and with the old Macbook Pro, probably by connecting it through audio-in port, maybe there is a way to transform it through the settings on the Mac into Mic-in?
If not, then my question is can I otherways use a professional Mic staying in Windows through Bootcamp on a Mac? And the most important - the new iMac, cause that happens to be the only question that stands before me and buying the new iMac.
Maybe I'm a little bit lame in all this stuff, because I'm used to use Windows-based computers to work with audio, but I didnt really understand what all that preamp and Line ment. I know that Line is a super-quality of the sound, guess thats possible to produce only in studios, not even with an extra good Shure mic at home. Or maybe you've been meaning smth else. If you could explane me everything in more easy and detailed way - I would be grateful.

  • Why assign IP addresses to router/switch interfaces?

I get why I would ever want to assign a IP address to a router or switch, for remote login and IP for hosts to reach it. But why assign IP addresses to the interfaces? Is it so the router/switch knows which port to send the packet out? Route summation? But I thought they do that through the routing table, like " that address is out this port".
So why would we ever need to assign IP addresses to specific port interfaces?

    Posting
You normally assign IP addresses to L3 interfaces so other L3 devices have an IP address to forward traffic to.  (L2 IP address are generally only used for management.)
Suppose you had Host (192.168.1.5/24) <> R1 <> R2 <> (192.168.2.8/24) Host, and you want the two hosts to intercommunicate.  How would you get this to work?
You might started by providing interface IPs on the router interfaces facing the host, such as:
    Host (192.168.1.5/24) <> (192.168.1.1/24) R1 <> R2 (192.168.2.1/24) <> (192.168.2.8/24) Host
You then configure "gateway" IPs on both hosts:
    Host (192.168.1.5/24 - GW 192.168.1.1) <> (192.168.1.1/24) R1 <> R2 (192.168.2.1/24) <> (192.168.2.8/24 - GW 192.168.2.1) Host
Now each hosts "knows" to send all its off local subnet, traffic physically to the GW IP.  So, for example, if 192.168.1.5 want to sent to 192.168.2.8, it would forward the traffic to the GW IP, 192.168.1.1.  This is a example of why you want an IP on the router's L3 interface.
Next we want R1 to forward the packet to R2, but it too needs a "next hop" IP address, so we assign addresses on the link between the two router, e.g.:
    Host (192.168.1.5/24 - GW 192.168.1.1) <> (192.168.1.1/24) R1 (192.168.3.1/24) <> (192.168.3.2/24) R2 (192.168.2.1/24) <> (192.168.2.8/24 - GW 192.168.2.1) Host
R1 then needs to "know" where to send packets with an destination IP network of 192.168.2.0/24, in this case, it need to "know" to send the to IP 192.168.3.2.  When it does, R2, having and interface with 192.168.2.1, will also know 192.168.2.8 can be reached by sending the packet out that interface.
Hopefully, the above will show why IP addresses on router L3 interfaces are needed.
BTW, normally for the R1<>R2 link, you would assign a /30 or /31 network or you might use "unnumbered" interfaces (which "borrow" IPs from another interface).

  • Link an 871 router/switch wirelessly to an ISP-provided DSL modem//router?

Hi, Upstairs we have a 20-Mbps ISP-provided DSL wireless modem/router, and one floor lower, in basement, I would like to install a refurbished 871 Cisco router, without adding a separate Internet connection. I would like the 871 to connect wirelessly to the DSL router.  To the 871 I would wirelessly connect 2 workstations, one of which will host 3-4 virtual machines. The 2 main reasons for this weird arrangement are so my virtual machines and virtual switch do not interfere with upstairs devices connected to the DSL router, and so I can practice Cisco router//switch configuration downstairs where I reside, without added expense of a separate Internet connection.   Would I need a separate repeater between the two routers?   Humbly requesting any other feedback.
    Jeff

To have all routers using the same Network Name and wireless password, you would have to configure them for a roaming network. This would require that the Extreme and Express connect individually back to the Pirelli router via an Ethernet connection.
