MATE 1.8+ Compiz

I have installed compiz and got it working somehow with gtk-window-manager but the problem is that I cant edit the theme on it. I have installed Gconf-editor but anychanges made in that dont seem to reflet on my DE. Is ther anyway I can change themes while using gtk-window-manager or if possible bring back marco and use that with compiz. I have googled and tried almost all the fixes I found but cant get compiz to use marco/ edit gtk-window-manager to show my desired theme.Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks in Advance.

This is a known problem that hasn't been fixed yet. It started around mate-desktop-1.8.0-2 IIRC.

It's all or nothing with Compiz I think. You either use Compiz or Marco.
NOTE: Development of MATE (the 1.9 branch) in ArchLinux is now focussing on GTK3. I doubt this issue is going to be resolved until after MATE is properly running with GTK3.
thanks for the reply .

  • [Solved] Multiple wallpapers on MATE with Compiz

    Hi.
I wanted to make MATE work with Compiz so it would let me have multiple wallpapers with the Wallpapers feature in ccsm. When I set the settings in ccdm, it doesn't work.
I googled it, and although it showed me a few settings I should change in the configuration editor, it did nothing.
What should I do so I can make it work?
EDIT: solved. Basically, I removed nautilus (I don't want to use it anymore) -- it was also conflicting with caja, and set the show_desktop in apps/caja/preferences to false.
Note: setting the show_desktop to false will mean removing icons from desktop. I don't know how to put them back up, but I will look it up later.

Ah, of course, Nautilus was managing the desktop. You can turn that off from Nautilus in its preferences so you can still use it as the file manager (if I remember right). Well that's how it worked with Gnome 2 anyway. BTW, isn't Caja their name for Nautilus, so the same thing?
As for icons, I don't use or want those on my desktop so I've never looked into a replacement functionality but this might be something you have to give up to have Compiz manage the wallpapers.
p.s. If you're looking for an amazing file manager then check out SpaceFM.
It's just a file manager, right?
I'm looking at it right now, it looks amazing.

  • [SOLVED] Compiz emerald not working

Hi , I recently reinstalled Arch, previously compiz with emerald was working fine under Mate desktop.
Now I can't get them to work properly.
    If i run:
    emerald --replace
    nothing happens
    If i run:
    compiz --replace &
I lose the window borders and can't move the windows.
In my ccsm I have enabled move windows, window decoration
and in window decoration i have in command emerald --replace
the packages i have installed :
    compiz-bcop 0.8.8-2
    compiz-core 0.8.9-3
    compiz-fusion-plugins-extra 0.8.8-2
    compiz-fusion-plugins-main 0.8.8-3
    compiz-fusion-plugins-unsupported 0.8.8-1
    compizconfig-python 0.8.4-5
    emerald 0.8.8-2
    emerald-themes 0.6.0-4
as compiz-core is not working if i try to install compiz-core-mate i get:
compiz-core-mate and compiz-core are in conflict.
if i remove compiz-core and everything that depends on compiz-core (compiz plugins, emerald, ccsm) and install compiz-core-mate then i can't install ccsm , compiz plugins nor emeral as all of them requiere compiz-core.
at the end in one way or another I can't get compiz and emerald working. any help would be appreciated
ps. i also tried compiz-gtk-standalone with the same problem that the other packages needed compiz-core  and had a compatibility problem.

In the OP you were using compiz 0.8x and that version is very out of date. I can't comment on compiz-mate, but the easiest and the semi-official way to run compiz on Arch is with the compiz-bzr (https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/compiz-bzr/) package in the AUR. If you want emerald with it, then install emerald-git (https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/emerald-git/).
Those should be the only two packages you install. compiz-bzr and (optionally) emerald-git. No fusion-icon or compiz-fusion-plugins or anything like that. Fusion icon is dead and all the plugins and everything else you need is bundled into compiz.
Now there has been a bit a trouble with compiz lately and the gtk-window-decorator. You need to downgrade your version of metacity to 3.12.0 (found here: http://seblu.net/a/arm/2014/08/05/commu … kg.tar.xz). I stumbled across this thread because of the problem you're having with ccsm and the error "ImportError: libprotobuf.so.8." In the compiz spinoff package called compiz-manjaro (https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/compiz-manjaro/) I found the comment "FYI: Recent update to protobuf package means this package needs to be rebuilt to get CCSM working again." So I rebuilt compiz-bzr and now ccsm is working for me again. That last part doesn't apply to you because you're installing compiz-bzr for the first time, but it might help someone else who finds this thread like I did.
As for your problem where you say "if i run compiz --replace i can't move the windows and i get no window borders." If you hold Alt, can you click and drag the windows around? Not having window borders is a common issue because the window border plugin isn't enabled. You can read more about that here - https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Co … nt_plugins
    EDIT:
There's the package compiz (https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/compiz/) which you can use instead of compiz-bzr. It's the release version instead of the development version. The release version apparently requires metacity2 (which you can find in the AUR), so if you pick this package then ignore my earlier comments about downgrade metacity.

  • Cannot change Compiz title bar on MATE Appearance

I've tried a lot of searching but I just can't find a solution...
I have MATE/GNOME 2 and Compiz worked pretty well on it.
However I can't seem to get GTK to change the title bar on any theme, and if Compiz is disabled, I get no title bar.
I even changed the window title font to show the problem.
I've tried reinstalling Compiz, the GTK decorator, changing to different themes, but nothing works.
Edit: gconftool-2 --set --type string /apps/metacity/general/theme "Theme"
    changes the title bar, apparently

I think you are talking about the all-day event space at the top of each day. this is where all-day events are located, and unfortunately you cannot resize that space manually, it resizes itself automatically depending on the number of all-day events created, and yes the only way to view the text is to double click on that event.
however, when you publish a calendar you are given the option to publish titles and notes, check that option, then publish your calendar. The user viewing your published calendar will be able to click on that all-day event and view the entire title and/or notes associated with that event in a pop up window.
    hope this helps

  • Compiz keyboard shortcuts not working with Mate 1.6

I've managed to get compiz working with Mate 1.6. Running compiz replace changes the window manager. However, none of the keyboard shortcuts are working. Here's a list of all the things I have enabled in CCSM:
    Composite
    Gnome Compatibility
    OpenGL
    Viewport Switcher
    Window Decoration
    JPEG
    PNG
    SVG
    Text
    Compiz Library Toolbox
    Dbus
    Notification
    Regex Matching
    Workarounds
    Move Window
    Place Windows
    Resize Window
I first noticed that the keyboard shortcuts for switching workspaces weren't working (but I had moved a terminal to another workspace, and I saw it in the workspace switcher on my panel, so I know it exists). I tried enabling Expo, but whenever I would press the keyboard shortcut (Super+e) nothing would happen, except it would type 'e' in the CCSM search box. Then I tried to run a command using Alt+F2, which is enabled, but the run command dialog box wouldn't show up, which leads me to believe that somehow Compiz isn't picking up the keyboard shortcuts.

hanny wrote:I'm running into similar issues with Xfce 4.10. ALT+F2 is working for me, but no ALT+TAB, Super+e etc...Im using compiz-bzr from AUR.
I recently started using Cinnamon since they moved completely off of Gnome 3. It works beautifully. You should check it out. Best Desktop Environment right now imho.

  • Compiz on MATE using marco

    Hi,
I'm having problems with setting up compiz on my box. I've tried to do it according to the wiki. But when I try to install compiz-decorator-gtk, it pulls metacity as a dependency. I don't really want to use metacity, and the effects don't work for me when I do. I tried to link marco executable as the metacity, and it worked, but there were no effects. Effects work only when cairo borders are on. What needs to be done? Is it possible?

  • [SOLVED] Borderless GTK 3 windows MATE + compiz

Hello, I have an issue with some application: they have no window borders.
Not all of them, but for example zenity has no borders, and cairo-dock pop-up dialogs are all white and make it crash (I suspect it's the same problem behind)

  • I found a globalmenu for Mate

Well I was in search of a globalmenu for Mate DE. There was no globalmenu for mate until the time I found this link :-
    http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.p … 7&t=114613
jasmineaura in above link has already forked compiz as compiz-mate & gnome2-globalmenu for mate by name mate-globalmenu. Its working for Linux mint I wonder if anyone can get it working for ARCH. I am newbie so I have no idea how to do it.
    cheers!

Thank you and whoever you copied this from so so much. Having already sent back one new iPod shuffle because after randomly autofilling from my entire music collection depsite following all the troubleshooting tips it just wouldn't let me do anything else, so I conclude it was broken! I then went out and got another new one from a different source only to find I had exactly the same problem. Ok that's too spooky for it to be a hardware problem, but having wasted two evenings of my life trying to sort it out I thankfully came across this post which works!:-) You are my saviour! Come on Apple put a fix out there for this or at least acknowledge there is a problem - otherwise I'm sure you'll end up loosing sales!

  • Compiz gtk decorator not using metacity theme

so for some reason the gtk decorator in compiz is not using the assigned metacity2 theme what I mean is that not mater what the theme the decorations stays the same

I set this at build time "OXYGEN_FORCE_KDE_ICONS_AND_FONTS 0", I don't know how it's controlled from user-space. But in any case, that's why, and that's what you should disable.

  • Compiz as stand-alone + xfce4-panel : a few questions

After some months with gnome 3 I decided to go back to compiz, as I used to use that with gnome 2.xx and appreciated it quite a bit. I ran into a few problems when trying to set it up properly.
First, is there some way to enable session management with compiz? I would like to be able to have a button or menu that offers to sleep, reboot or shutdown the computer. Not that I mind using 'pm-suspend' and other commands like that, but my girlfriend also uses the computer sometimes so it needs to be more user-friendly than that. I noticed there is an actions button by default in the xfce panel but it doesn't work in compiz and just says 'session management is disabled, do you want to exit X' or something like that.
Second, I need some sort of run prompt when I hit alt-f2. The 'gnome compatibility' option in ccsm doesn't seem to work in standalone mode.
Third, I want the computer to automatically sleep when I flip the lid. In gnome 3, it does that without any special configuration, but this doesn't work with compiz as a stand-alone. I suspect I need to configure it to pick up the 'lid is flipped' event somehow?
Fourth, I need a volume control option that will display a volume icon in my xfce4 panel notification area and most importantly I need that volume control icon to respond accurately to the input from my 'mute' and volume 'up' and 'down' buttons. It's a thinkpad x220 laptop. I bring it to school often, so being able to know whether my volume is on or off is important when in class. This works fine in gnome3 but I have tried other DE's such as LXDE and found that the volume icon stayed the same as I used the volume buttons on the keyboard (the buttons did work, so it could be muted but still displaying that it's at full volume). To check if it was muted or not, I had to open a terminal and use alsamixer.
Of course, I don't NEED to be using xfce4-panel. What I need is a menu, and automatic menu generation is nice because it's easier to configure. So I picked that one because I've used it in the past. If there is a better alternative, please recommend it. Or perhaps it would be best if I simply ran gnome fallback and compiz as the WM?

I'm using compiz standalone, so here's how i solved that stuff.
You can use obshutdown for session management, it's in AUR, look in its config file, slap a launcher in the corner of you panel, set the icon for prettyness and it works pretty well.
I use gmrun as a launcher, set alt+f2 to call it. It's pretty simple which is what i like. You can also use synapse, or gnome-do, they have more functionality like searching your bookmarks, your files, your loved one's medical history, you name it.
For volume control, you can use pnmixer from aur, it sits in your system tray, and you can set it's hotkeys, but you can also use CCSM to set your hotkeys for volume management.
I think laptop-tools(check the wiki) can be used to put your computer to sleep, and general powersaving. You should check the article named laptop in the wiki for other laptop-related stuff too. I think i used xfce4-power-manager for power management as well a while ago.
I used xfce4-panel for a while but i didn't really like it as much as i liked the old gnome-panel, so i installed mate-panel(which is the old gnome-panel). You can find it in AUR, or you can check it's wiki article for repos you can add for mate(if you want to install it from aur, it will pull some aur dependancies, and i didn't feel like compiling everything).

  • Compiz-fusion, nvidia GeForce 8600M GT, no Compiz-fusion configurator.

    Hi there,
I have few issues with the Compiz-fusion...
    1. I have the Nvidia GeForce 8600M GT card, one thing is for sure - i can play The Witcher without any trouble. And Compiz-Fusion is running very slow... Maybe not very slow, but i think, that a card that can handle The Witcher - should have no trouble with sth like Compiz-Fusion... I've installed the newest Nvidia drivers, everything seems to be OK... But it isnt... C-F is running slow, making me mad ;]
    2. I can't use the ccsm... AFAIK, ccsm should be the graphical configurator for Compiz-Fusion... But i have some trouble with locales... i'm using Polish locales, and the (standard?) en_EN UTF8 locales...

    Thanks for the reply.
I did that, restarted Xserver with Ctrl+Alt+Backspace
no black screen after fusion-icon command this time (I suppose because Option "AllowGLXWithComposite" is off)
but when i select Compiz as a Window Mnager from fusion-icon I have no borders in my windows and no effects and I canot switch throw windows. Why is that...?
after fusion-icon command I take this exit:
    * Detected Session: kde
    * Searching for installed applications...
    * No GLX_EXT_texture_from_pixmap with direct rendering context
... nor with indirect rendering, this isn't going to work!
    * Using the GTK Interface
    * Starting Compiz
    ... executing: compiz --replace --sm-disable --ignore-desktop-hints ccp
Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0".
Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0".
Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0".
compiz (core) - Fatal: glXCreateContext failed
compiz (core) - Error: Failed to manage screen: 0
compiz (core) - Fatal: No manageable screens found on display :0
Why I take Xlib:  extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0".
    and
compiz (core) - Fatal: glXCreateContext failed
compiz (core) - Error: Failed to manage screen: 0
compiz (core) - Fatal: No manageable screens found on display :0
is there something wrong wiht my drivers? I installed them from the official repo.

  • Multiple issues with trying to standalone Compiz(driving me nuts)

All right. This is going to be one long post.
I'm trying to achieve a standalone Compiz session as inspiring by the thread "HOWTO standalone Compiz" and I want to achieve automatic login through either a login manager (gdm kdm slim) or the inittab tweak. I would prefer the login manager method.
Issue 1: if I try the method on the wiki, gdm looks for an Xclient script, which is completely vague. I've created .Xclient, and set it to exec start-fusion.sh, but that just crashes X.
I've tried creating a fusion.desktop file in /usr/share/xsessions to point to start-fusion.sh, but that crashes it as well.
I've tried the inittab method and tried to point it to startx, but that just crashed X again.
SLiM doesn't work. It just crashes. Neither does KDM.
Issue 2: The fonts in GDM are just so tiny. When I try to login from GDM through .Xclient, the fonts in the session are tiny as well. I've tried all the methods on the Xorg wiki, but none of them worked. I'm connecting my T61p to an external monitor.
Issue 3: I used to be able to let compiz set which desktop to open a certain application through "Put Window". Now I can't. In all cases I've had 6 desktops, 3 across 2 high. The windows don't listen anymore. I've tried using the class and the name of the application both, but none do it.
Would it actually be better to just do a fresh/squeak clean install of everything? It know it's not required, but would it help?
    here's my xorg.conf for a reference:

  • Memory Bandwidth 865PE Neo2 FIS2R & MAT

I read with envy the msi web page describing MAT on the 865PE board, http://www.msi.com.tw/html/service/techexpress/tech_column/6728/page5.htm
It has two graphs showing SiSoftware Sandra memory benchmarks.
I have a similar configuration as the test bed but I can not achieve more than 3,561MB/s with default BIOS settings ie no MAT or DOC and using spd on alledgedly the fastest PC3200 memory money can buy the Corsair Twinx PC3200LL.
I am using dual channel with matched set of memory boards.
What gives? I note that the test bed uses PC3500 memory but if the clock rate is the same (400Mhz) no appreciable difference should be shown (bar low latency settings mine 2-3-3-6).
Any ideas on how to get the bandwidth up on this board?   Or do I have a problem?

Care to post a screenshot? I think that 9,000 is not possible. People in the Asus boards are scoring in the 6,000+ ranges and they are overclocked like crazy.

Are you sure it's the Memory Bandwidth that you selected? I remember from another thread your version of Sisoft Sandra does not have the PAT option displayed. Download the latest Sandra:
