Material Type configuration changes

Friends,
We have a requirement to change the material type configuration from valuated to non valuated. I performed this change in sandbox and the system allows me to change the configuration.
There are some impacts of doing that like we need to kill all the open PO's an create new ones and also the value of stock will never get clears out etc...
So my question is whether is this a good practice to change the material type configuration or not.
Has anyone done this before?
Thanks for your responses
Anil Yadalam

Thanks Lakshman for the response.
If i create a new material type and make it as non-valuated then i will not be able to convert the material type using MMAM since it will give an error message about the Account category reference not being the same for both material types.
Your response is appreciated.
Thanks,
Anil Yadalam

  • Modifying standard material type configuration provided by SAP

I was recently involved in a discussion regarding whether or not to modify sap provided material types (e.g. FERT)
My position was that SAP provided material type configuration should not be modified, instead a z-version of the standard material type should be copied over to a z-version or a y-version (FERT copied as ZFRT), configurations changes made the z-version. My position was based on the following considerations:-
    Reference to the original
Possible implication at the time of future releases or upgrades - In Some of my previous projects this was a reason why the standard material type configurations were never touched
Hence I am curious to know if there a more current or correct position on this topic.

    Hi Jose,
You are absolutely correct that standard material type should not be changed as you can always reference to the original if you want to create a new material type by copying the old ones. I too have seen ZFRT and FERT.
I go by creating a Z one, as I have always the option to reference the original Material Type. As the above members have already replied the same.
It is very easy to check the material type like FERT, ROH etc. However, say you have changed the settings for standard material type like FHMI, LEIH, VERP etc and you want to create a new material type by referencing any of the above, you will need to check client 000 (as referred by Jurgen) to check what Pricing control it have S or V. What Item Category is in original. What selection of views are there in original etc. you always have a better edge to check from the originals if you do not change them.

  • Material Type Configuration and Creating Z configured Material Types

    All-
Every solution architect I have contacted has told us that itu2019s standard practice to create copies of standard SAP material types (and all other configuration) and then update configuration to make the object client specific rather than just modifying SAP standard.  You do that because when SAP delivers upgrades they may update standard configuration keys and that can cause disruptions.  We talked to some folks at SAP who told us the same thing.
My Client had previously agreed to this but now some of their IT resources have pushed back with their primary argument being u201Cthis hasnu2019t affected us for the last 15 years so we want to continue with what we haveu201D i.e. modifying configuration and customizing the SAP delivered material types.  Theyu2019ve also found some SAP documentation that says itu2019s fine to do it either way.  I donu2019t have the depth of technical knowledge to get into all of the arguments for / against this.
Request u2013 Can anyone point us to a position paper or document that states why we suggest this (reasons, pros, consu2026) or someone that could provide us with the expertise to clearly state why and what the consequences are if they donu2019t?  Or if this is really just something that is suggest based upon the potential for problems and they can do whatever they want?
Any information would be greatly appreciated

You obviously can modify a lot of standard objects because the config. option is there.
The main reason not to is because they act as models e.g. what is the SAP standard model for configuration of a Traded material (in the given Solution, Country etc.).  If you have copied the std and modified the Z version you can always refer back to the std if you run in to unexpected difficulties. If you've modified the std, you have no model to refer to.  If you modify the std and it then doesn't do what you want or you hit an issue of some form, you pretty much have to figure out why yourself because SAP would probably charge you.
Material Types in particular involve a huge potential number of fields (900+) and complex field selection.
If you do modify a standard, at least document exactly what changes were made so you and subsequent support personnel can understand how the object has been modified. 'Small' modifications of objects you may well have no future issue with, 'big' modifications of big objects could well come back to haunt you.

  • Internal Order type - Configuration change

    Hi
I have created an Internal Order type in January and we have create internal orders under that order type in our production server and have used those as well.
I want to remove the revenue posting tick which has been allowed in this order type which was done at the time when the order type was created.
If I remove the revenue posting setting now, do i need to replace the internal orders which has been created under that order type with new ones after the configuration change? OR will the entries posted earlier (before the configuration change) work according to the old order type settings and will the order work according to the new settings after the change date?
    Thanks
    Trishan

    Hi,
Don't you know if there is any program that updates the old order master data, according to posterior changes in the order type?
    Thanks. Best regards,

  • Functional Module or BAPI for changing Material Type

    Hi,
There is a Transaction MMAM for changing the Material Type in SAP. Can anyone help me in figuring out a Functional Module which can change the Material Type like how MMAM transaction does. Is anyone aware of any FM or BAPI that can take import parameters as Material Number and New Material Type and change the material type to the New one.
I tried using the BDC but got some performance issues with it.
    Thanks
    Vinay

Could you please put some light on which part of the transaction MMAM is responsible in changing the Material type. I can understand that there may exist may checks in the Tx MMAM but I would like to know  where is the material Type getting changed in the Tx MMAM. On going through the Tx MMAM I have across many forms and function modules but its difficult to track the form/Function Module responsible for changing the Material Type. Please help me in this.

  • Material type for - Diesel

    Hi Friends,
My Client is Construction Equipment leasing company.
They lease (Say Generator ) on lease, they also sell Diesel along with that machine.
For Diesel, which material type we use?? I thought of using (HIBE - Operating Supplies) but it doesnt have Sales View {other option - i can configure copy of HIBE with Sales View} .
Any other material type we can use for Diesel.
    Regards,
    Jackie

you can create own material types or change SAP given material types to your local needs.
if you want sales views for HIBE, then add it.
if you dont produce Diesel, just buy and sell, then it is usually a trading good HAWA.

    Dear Mr. Devendra,
Please let me know the configuration in details becoz i want to restrict the user for not to change the HALB TYPE BOM in CS02 but in case of FERT type he can change.
    e.g.
BOM Creation user has to rights to create / change the BOM of material type FERT.
BOM Creation user has to rights to create / but no change authority the BOM of material type HALB.Change rights we have to assign to authority.
Hope from you positive feed back and thanks for immediate respond to both.

  • Quantity update of material type

    Hi all,
I have a question with regards to material type.
Letu2019s say if I can a new material type with both purchasing and sales view, and unchecked the u201CQuantity Updatingu201D checkbox, and checked the u201CValue Updatingu201D checkbox in the material type configuration.
1 - May I know what does it means?
    Does it meant:
2 u2013 When I did a goods receipt into the system, there will no stock quantity update in display in the MMBE, MB52 (i.e. not inventorized)?
3 u2013 Does it means the tmaterial create will be inventorized?
4 u2013 the stock quantity will not be capture in the system but only the value will show in the book?
    This a bit confuse topic.
    Thanks.

    hi
quantity and value update is ticked for the materials which being inventerised generally in the plant
now if u dont tick for the quantity update then the material will required the account assignment as it will not stocked in SL
if u untick for value update and tick for quantity then the material can be stored in the SL ,means we can do the GR but the there will be    no accounting documents
better we explain you why dont you try it yourself

  • Prototype Material Type

    Hi,
We are thinking of a process wherein the engineering department would have their own material type eg ZENG for all prototyping related materials. This material type would contain only basic data fields such as description, unit of measure etc. At a certain point, when the prototyping effort is completed, these materials would be converted to different types such as ROH, HALB, FERT etc. and would then be used by manufacturing
    a)     Does anyone have experience with this kind of process and if so what are your thoughts.
    b)     If this ZENG material is created via CAD integration, and then later on when the material type is changed how would the CAD interface reconcile that?
    I appreciate any input.
    Thanks,
    Rahul

    Hi Rahul,
You don't mention if there will be any purchasing/stock movements or other transaction done for ZENG; because if yes, then you won't be able to change the material type later. For exact limitations read please SAP documentation and notes.
If no, and a change of material type is possible, I don't think that it should have any impact on the CAD integration, as it is done on level of material number, and the number in this case doesn't change.

    Mario

  • Material type deletion clarification

    Hello Gurus,
There is a need that we are optimizing material types used currently. So we are reducing no of material types which means we have to delete material types ( already materials exist for that material type. system allows to deleted from spro ). Will there be any impact for already created materials with such material types or PO's please let me know.
Or is there any alternative apart from deleting material types - basic intension is to avoide usage of such unwanted material types. how to control this

In simple words, never delete a material type specially when materials and PO's exist for.
You can disable Purchasing by going in OMS2, your material type, and changing the number besides fields Ext. Purchase Order/Int. Purchase Orders to 0, thus no purchasing will be allowed for this material type.

  • Change material type - any warnings?

A material with very little history exists in the system as a semi-finished item with 1220 valuation class.  One purchase order exists that is due in, in two days.  No inventory exists.  The problem is that the system is not configured to post goods against 1220 valuation class items.  So it needs converted to a finished good since the plan is to sell it after it is received from a vendor.
No open orders or other movements exist in the system.  Just one new open po that was created today, and could easily be deleted.
So, delete the po then change the material type using MMAM.
Are there any recommendations/warnings someone can offer before this is done?

    Hi,
Pre requisites for changing a material types:
    1. If you use a material ledger the material ledger must be settled in it.
2.If the old material type did not require you to specify a price control for the material the new material type must not be configured such that it allows only
    standard price as price control.
3.If the material is already in stock or reservations exists or purchase orders exists the following conditions must exist.
          1. The stock values of the new material types must be updated in the same
G/L Account as the stock values of the old material types
         2.  Quantities and values of the new material types must be updated exactly as were by the old material types.

  • Matarial master changes for a particular material type using BD21

    Hi All,
<b>I am facing one problem related to change pointer in ALE.</b>
I have configured the ALE layer between two systems successfully.
<b>I have used filter group</b> on material type and also I have done the <b>reduction of IDOC.</b>
When I trigger the material master data changes using BD21, it triggers the data for all the material type where as I want to trigger the material master data chages to particular material type only.
Can anybody suggest some solution for this.
Note: Please don't say to use <b>filter group on material type</b>......I have already done that.
The correct solution will be rewarded with 10 points!
    Thanks & Regards
    Prabhat

The firs thing I would do is verify the config.  Make sure the message type of the created IDocs matches the message type to which the filter is applied in the distribution model.  If everything looks ok, place break-points at the following locations:
In FM MASTER_IDOC_DISTRIBUTE, on the call PERFORM DIST_MODEL_READ_FOR_MESTYP.  This subroutine reads the filters from the distribution model.  Verify the values in internal table RECEIVERS_AND_FILTERS are correct.
In FM MASTER_IDOC_DISTRIBUTE, in FORM IDOC_SELECTION_AND_SERVICES, on the call to FM IDOC_DATA_APPLY_FILTER_VALUES.  This function should return the filtered results.  IDOC_DATA contains the data segments of your IDoc and CONDITION_BLOCKS contains the filter.
When you run BD21, you should hit these break-points.

  • Change of Material Type via MMAM

    Hi All,
May I ask what are the other prerequisites in changing the Material type?
What I know is stocks must be zeroed out, Open POs must be closed (is it the open POs only? or all POs with the specified material?) ,and OLD and NEW Material type should have the same Value and Quantity Updating setup.
I tried changing one material by it reflects an existing Delivery for the said material, I checked the DR and found that it was already received - although its Shipment Cost hasn't been transferred. What should be done with these DRs?
    Thanks a lot.
    =)

    Hello
The following are the checks the System made :
The POs will need to be flagged for deletion and/or the production
orders will need to be archived, in order to change the material type
    for the material.
The value and quantity updating must be identical for the old and new
material types in order to allow a material type change.
    Review note 160970.
If you do not want to flag the deletion flag of the PO line item for
the material, please use note 160970.
Note 160970 is only for material types where the quantity and value
updating is similar (txn OMS2 configuration) .
Please refer to the Online documentation:-
        Logistics - General
        -> Logistics Basic Data
           -> Material Master
              -> Material Master Records
                 -> Material Types
                    -> Changing a Material Type
If the material is already in stock, or if reservations or purchasing
documents exist for it, the following conditions must also be met:
o Quantities and values of the material of the new material type
must be updated in exactly the same way in all plants as quantities
and values of the material of the old material type.
Please take note that the account category reference must be the same
for both the new and old material types and the stock values for the
materials with the new material type must be updated in the same G/L
account as the stock values for materials with the old material type.

  • Change of Material Type in Plants

    Dear Guru's,
    Good Day.
I've two plant Codes Plant A and Plant B with one company code.
Plant A Procures a Material(ABC) from an Vendor. Material type for ABC is maintained as ROH(Raw material).
Plant B produces Material(ABC) inhouse and does STO to Plant A.
I've extended the Material (ABC) from Plant A to Plant B.
Now,  I need to Change the material Type for ABC in Plant B as Finished Goods(FERT), which is not Possible by transaction MMAM.
I need to Change the Valuation Class and Price control for mateiral ABC in plant B.

    Hi There
    Steps in Split valuation
    1. Define the valuation category Globally
    2. Define the Valuation types Globally
    3. which valuation types belong to which valuation category
    4. Define the Vlauation category/Valauation type locally- Per Plant
