what is the different between material type & material group

Hi,
Material type:
Materials with the same basic attributes are grouped together and assigned to a material type. This allows you to manage different materials in a uniform manner in accordance with your company's requirements
The material type identifies the characteristics of a material that are important with regard to Accounting and Inventory Management. A material is assigned a type when you create the material master record.
"Raw materials" and "finished products" are examples of material types. In the standard MM module, the material type for the former (ROH) denotes an externally procured (bought-in) material, whereas the material type for the latter (FERT) indicates that the relevant material is produced in-house.
Material type you choose determines:
u2022     Whether the material is intended for a specific purpose, for example, as a configurable material or process material
u2022     Whether the material number can be assigned internally or externally
u2022     The number range from which the material number is taken
u2022     Which screens appear and in what sequence
u2022     Which departmental data you may enter
u2022     What procurement type the material has; that is, whether it is manufactured in-house or procured externally, or both
Together with the plant, the material type determines the material's inventory management requirement; that is:
u2022     Whether changes in quantity are updated in the material master record
u2022     Whether changes in value are also updated in the stock accounts in financial accounting
In addition, the accounts affected by a material entering or leaving the warehouse depend on the material type.
Material Group:
    Key that you use to group together several materials or services with the same attributes, and to assign them to a particular material group.
    You can use material groups to:
u2022     Restrict the scope of analyses
u2022     Search specifically for material master records via search helps
It can be assigned in material master in Basic Data1 (Client level) and Purchasing (Pur org level) views.

Changing the material type for a material is possible as it has been well explained by other friends
It is because a semifinished goods one material type can become a finished goods another material type
Changing the industry sector is not possible at all
Once industry sector is assigned to a material you cant change it at all

Check in MC.9 transaction to get the list of stocks based on the Material types along with materials & material description with Value & stocks
The Report will give you all the details with respect to material types, Material group etc. for a particular period or as on period also.

Hi Gurus,
is there a tcode that would include a price analysis for materials over time. It should be able to be sorted by supplier, material type & material group. The main objective is to follow the price trend over time

For Stock as per material type :
Check MC.T, MC.U and MC.W....Material pricing groups...
Then also check MC$< : For Purchasing values
and MC$> : For purchasing quantities...
Above two are based on the material group...

Authorization object M_MATE_MAR "Material Master - Material Types" in MM01

Hi,
We in CPS Energy are implementing VIrsa SOD conflicts on the roles that are in place in current SAP 4.6C version. The authorization object M_MATE_MAR is used by MM01(Creation of Material Master) transaction code & used at mutiple roles. We have restricted this authorization object by Material Type Authorization Group (BEGRU)as WMS1 & given activity a 01, 02 & 03 in a role. The same authorization object is used in Common roles also for displaying that is using transaction code MM03 (Display Material) but the activity & authorization group are ''. This '' is taking precedence over the the authorization object given in the other role.
Please let us know how to put a control on this authorization object which is used widely by large number of users.

Hi Sree, your role with MM03 in it should not have * for actvt if it is only a display role.
As it is a display role actvt 03 would be more suitable. That way you could have display for all auth groups, but create and change/MM01&2 would be restricted to WMS1 (and any other materials with a blank auth group)

Material Type creation in SAP Netweiver MDM 7

i want to know how the Material Types, material Groups and number ranges forMaterial Types created. are these created in Datamanager?

Material types and Material Groups are defined as flat Lookup tables in MDM. You can either maintain them manually by exporting the table values from SAP and importing them in MDM using Import manager OR use transaction MDMGX for automatically populating these values from SAP to MDM.

Number Ranges- If the numbering schema is simple and can be replicated in MDM using calculated fields we can define calculation fields for Material numbers. Or we can also assign a number range while defining the remote systems in MDM based on Material type.

Change material type

When i am changing the material type i am getting this msg. In Po items were deleted.
Change Material Type
The material type cannot be changed.
The reasons for this are:
Valuated stock exists (see valuation areas below).
However, account determination for the two material types differs.
(different account category reference or no valuation data defined)

Consumable Material type tax register updation

Dear friends
When to capture and post the excise invoice for Consumable material type,
Material need to update on 23 A register. But its is updating on 23C register.
How to rectify this error? Where we can assign the consumable material type with 23 A register?

Check the Material & Chapter ID combination in J1ID transaction
If you assign the material type as Raw Material in the above settings for your Material, Plant & Chapter ID combination, RG23A Register will be updated.

Reg: Document type should allow only one Material Type or a number series

Dear Experts,
In my project , clients requirement is to restrict the Material Type or the number range assigned to a Matreial Type for a perticular PO Document Type. We have one document type for Local Work Order -YLWO in which we want to enter the DIEN material type material code only. since we want to use the Po document type to procure service from local vendor and same time we dont want to use the SERVICE Entry Sheet for the external service. Please guide me...
My opinion is -- We can try with USEREXIT or BADI.
If I am right then can any body suggest me Badi or USEREXIT name....
We are using 4.6C so I am facing some problem .

ME_PROCESS_PO_CUST
I have used this BADI for controlling the type of vendors according to PO document type. Currently I do not have access key to check the fields in this user exit. Check with your ABAPER on this whether it can fulfill your requirement.
The use of item category D results into the service entry sheet. If you want to use DIEN material type then you have to do GR.
what is the difference from your requirement ???
Service entry sheet is nothing but the GR only.
DEIN material type is used basically from SD or Customer service module.
please make clear to forum what is your some problem by using 4.6C. It is too generic a statement.

Convert Material Type FHMI to ROH

Hi, Friends
I have create one PRT material, also I create the view of Production Resources/Tools. Afterward , I use T_code 'MMAM' to change Material Type 'FHMI' to 'HALB', But system prompt 'Material is a production resource/tool; not defined by new material type.' .
Is there any IMGs I need to setting? Please Help me ,How Solve it?

Hello,
Stocks already exist in Perticular plants. However, these
plants
have different quantity/value updating, resulting in different
account determination.
Stocks already exist at plant level.
One more: FHMI Material type is having the View- production resource/tool,
These material types material are account assigned, without account assigned you should not create PO for these materials.
And ROH is does not have -" production resource/tool," this view...
It is not possible to allow you change the materail type. Check in OMS2.
IF you realy want to change then For temparary you should select the View for ROH in OMS2 and make as it is..(this is not recommended)

Material type and account assignment group relation

Hi,
Getting an error while creating material master save. Account assignment Zx can't be with Material Type Zxxxx.
Please advise where is the link maintained between material account assignment group and material type.
My material is Z service material.
As I no for plant,industry, material type valuation class quanity update tick required but that is for stockable materials which is not the case above.

You can make the field Account Assignment Group of Material Master as inactive.
But it depends up on Plant, Industry Sector Type and Material Type.
You can do this in IMG --> Logistic General --> Material Master --> Field Selection
Or
use SHD0.. give T-code MM01. and you can deactivate the field.

Hi JP,
You cant control this, since material groups are floating entities with no dependancies. You have to either create a screen variant in SHD0 (this doesnt support for a particular material type) or chk with your ABAPer to wrte a code to achieve this.
