Math typing

Hello!
I bought IPad for my education. I educate in physics and really I need an app to type math formulas in advanced level. I have installed mathbot app but this works with TEX language wich I am unfamiliar and uncomfortable with it. I want to suggest me an app that type math formula directly without mediator language such as Maple and it is possible to save document in pdf and word file and can copy and paste it to web pages.

I would tend to agree with his assessment that you're likely to find an iPad too limiting for anything other than entry-level physics classes. But perhaps you'll find something that will work for you.

Slow typing of letters (InDesign CS4)

Getting really frustrated here. I am writing a user guide using InDesign CS4. I created an .indb book file and added 5 documents where 4 of them are of approx 2-3MBs each. The main document is on approx 10MB, and the number of pages are 63. That's not a very large document, is it? I am not too eager to share this confidential document, thus I try to explain my problem thoroughly...
When typing within the main document the letters enters slower than syrup poors. I type, and then I must wait. It takes up to one second each letter! Does not matter if I type from the beginning of the document, or the end of it. Does not InDesign handle large documents, or is it a matter of content. All other functions and panels work as normal.
The main document consists of text, and screenshots in .png format styled with shaddow and frame. The text is formatted with a set of paragraph rules. In addition I have created a group of objects for textual Notes, consisting of an icon left to the text and then a grey background with frame surrounding the note text. This group has object, character, and paragraph styles attached to it. I cannot believe this is slowing the document down.
I perform some testing. I save the main document separately outside the .indb file, and then do several tests removing stuff in separate operations. After stuff is removed I try to type some text to see if typing still performs as syrup. Removing all screenshots in one operation, a table in another separate operation, then headers, note styles, and at last reducing content. After each removal operation I test typing from the beginning of the document, same place each time. None of the removals seem to have any effect to the document size. However, when reducing the 63 pages large document down to 45 the typing speeds up like a charm. Reducing to only 55 pages, however, make no difference at all. But why should reducing 10 pages from a 63 pages large document have such great effect? Is 50 pages the size limit for InDesign files? Or what?
I would be tremendously greatful if somebody could enlighten me in this matter.

I wanted to let you know that your post was very helpful. I have been bashing my head into the wall trying to figure the same problem out. It is clear the problem is InDesign because the other programs I run simultaneously don't have these speed, mouse, or keyboard issues. I've tried not running anything simultaneously and emptying the windows programs running in the background. It has no effect on InDesign. I have gone so far as to have my IT specialist go through the windows OS looking for anything eating up the CPU or causing conflicts. No improvement in InDesign.
In fact, my InDesign has gotten so slow that I have to click over and over again to select with the mouse. It is actually easier to highlight by keyboard commands than by mouse, even with the keyboard delays. I will do something and the mouse completely disappears until I move it outside the InDesign window. It's as if InDesign is so busy that it can't draw the mouse within the software. But the computer is not busy because the mouse appears if I move it to the desktop (I use two monitors).Yes, I replaced the batteries in my microsoft USB mouse. Yes, I tried a chorded mouse. The computer is 6 months old.
I've been working with InDesign for 2 years. We upgraded immediately to CS4 between announcement and shipping of the product last year. We publish workbooks for grades k-12. Let's just say that a third of the document is conditional text.
The file I'm working on right now is a HS math workbook. I have to typeset full-size, algebraic fractions. For this, I set up a text box with a numerator paragraph style and a denomenator paragraph style. The box is then embedded in the main text flow as the fraction. I probably have a thousand of these embedded boxes.Of course, some boxes are not only embedded, but also conditional.
There are diagrams that accompany/illustrate the problems. They are created within the document and anchored to the problems. Linking to anything outside of the file is not an option. The file must be self-contained.
The final page count is expected to be about 80 pages, (64 are already typeset). There are four master spreads (8 pages) and I don't think any are related to each other.
I did the "Save As" which cut my file size from 40 mb to 22.2 mb. Wow, did not expect that. Unfortunately, it didn't help. I tried closing ID and reopening. Still didn't change the speed of the mouse or text.
I will try to figure out if live preflight is turned on. I don't know since we don't use preflight. Which would be better, turning off smart text flow or closing the pages pane? I'd like to leave the pages pane open, but I will try it closed if you really think that will make much of a difference.
I will look at anything you can think of. Unfortunately, I cannot upload the file as a whole. I have trimmed it down to two sample pages.

How to use math symbols in a right to left text properly?

Hey there
When I write a simple mathematical equation or a number(which has sign) in the middle of a right to left text in a text box(I simply set keyboard language to EN for typing expressions & numbers) it's like mathematical symbols are somehow not considered math symbols and that's weird since in word it's not that way, take the following sentence for example that means result of the 0-127 expression is -127:
حاصل عبارت 127-0 برابر 127- است.
In word I can type it just fine(for typing expressions and numbers I set keyboard language to EN) but when I type it the same way in adobe acrobat I get this:
حاصل عبارت 0-127 برابر -127 است.
copy & paste from word also doesn't do any help, so If I want to get it right I should type math expressions from right to left meaning as instance to type 0-127 I should first type 127 then - and finally 0 also should type digits of a number before typing its sign as example for typing -127 I should first type 127 then - ,now I wonder is it the way acrobat works or I'm doing something wrong.
By the way OMG o_O even when I did copy & paste my messasge from word to the text box of forum for posting, it ended up treating math parts in upper right to left paragraph the same way as acrobat I just had to write them from right to left!
Anyone has any idea?

}I remove toString method in Point123 class, but whenever I call insidePoint method in segment class it print out "Exercise12.Point123@addbf1". In other hand, I don't remove toString method, I call insidePoint method,then it prints out the correct result which I want.
I think the reason why this thing happened is that I am using Point123 return type in insidePoint method. To midlePoint method in segment class, it does not affect whether I remove toString or not. That is because I use its own String return type.
Can someone tells me whether my thought is correct or not? And explain more about variable typed "name of a class"

Oh! My header's segment class does not have extend...., therefore it inherit from the Object. But what is Object in my class?

Have you learnt about try/catch statements yet?
The parseInt method throws a NumberFormatException. So you place the call to that method inside a try statement and catch the exception.
For divide by zero, you can use an if statement. If the divisor != 0 perform division.

Problems with "time math". Trying to calculate Duration.

I thought I had my head around this, but evidently NOT. And it seems that the newer version of Numbers has cleaned up how we deal with calculating times, while I'm still on Numbers '08.
What I'm hoping for seems incredibly simple. But something is falling apart.
In cell B3, time started: 9:37 AM
In cell C3, end time: 8:28 PM
In cell D3, "down time", how long was lunch break, etc.: 1 hour 23 minutes.
In cell E4, I'd want the Duration of hours worked for the day.
Sounds simple enough, I know. And I'm partly there, but something's not right.
Right now, in B3 and C3, I just have the times. Then in D3 I just have the "down time". I'm using a hidden column "E" where, E3 is set up with the formula, =HOUR(D3) for calculation purposes.
Then finally, in the Resulting Duration column, I have =((HOUR(C3)-HOUR(B3))-E3)
Seems to work, with nice clean even hours. But once the numbers/times don't add up to a perfect even amount of time, the numbers get silly!
Any help here would be appreciated.

HOUR(B3) extracts the hour value (as a number) of the Date and Time value contained in B3.
Numbers '08 treats all time entries as Date and Time (of day) values. DURATION (as a data type) was introduced in Numbers '09.
For your task, you can enter times of day, convert them to fractions of a (24 hour) day, do the math, then multiply the result by 24 to convert it to a number of hours, expressed as a decimal number.
Here's an example, using the values in your original post:
B3 contains the Starting Time, B4 the Ending Time, and B5 a Time of Day masquerading as the duration of the lunch break. Each of these is actually a Date and Time value, formatted to show only the Time part.
B3 and B4 are formatted to show, in 12 hour AM/PM format, only the Time portion of a Date and Time value.
B5 is formatted to show, in 24 hour format, only the Time portion of a Date and Time value.
C3 - C5 contain the formula =B, and simply copy (and display) the Date and Time value actually placed in the corresponding cells in column B when I typed in the time displayed. the Date is the date on which the entry was made.
D3 - D5 contain the formula =TIMEVALUE(B)
TIMEVALUE extracts the decimal fraction of a day that has passed by the Time part of the Date and Time value in each corresponding cell in column B, providing a set of numbers with which calculations may be done.
Columns C and D are for demonstration purposes only, and are not used in calculating the amount of time worked.
That's done in B6 (also a demonstration, showing the result as the fraction of a full 24 hour day), and in B7 (showing the result as a number representing the number of hours worked that day.
Formulas:
B6: =TIMEVALUE(B4)-TIMEVALUE(B3)-TIMEVALUE(B5)
B7: =24*(TIMEVALUE(B4)-TIMEVALUE(B3)-TIMEVALUE(B5))
Not shown is a further formula that converts the value in B7 to a text string showing the number of hours and minutes ( 9h 28m ) worked that day. Note that while the time values in B6 and/or B7 can be used in further calculations, the text string produced by the formula below cannot.

Studio by FMWebSchool.com. I get the [empty] "Document type could
not be added" error 33 times on application launch. I see no

Math ALT Codes in RichTextEditor

I have been using the RichTextEditor and Spanish symbols all seem to work just fine out of the box, like ALT+168 for the upside down ? etc. However, I'm having issues with several math symbols. Is there a way to enable these alt codes in the RTE somehow?
A few of the symbols I need are:
ALT+232 for the Greek Symbol Phi
ALT+233 for the Greek Symbol Theta
ALT+236 for the Infinity Symbol
ALT+242 for Greater than or Equal to Symbol
ALT+243 for Less than or Equal to Symbol.
Anyone out there had any experience with this or have any ideas on how to implement these shortcuts within the RTE?

Not really the solution I need. What I'm looking for is basically the same usability you would get from any
text editor, where a user can be typing/writing out something then whenever they need a special character, just hit ALT+#### and it
will insert the correct symbol. Asking users to somehow throw in HTML text won't work b/c most of our user base doesn't know HTML.

Help with math / calculations in RTF templates

I know that there are math capabilities in the templates... I've seen the code samples in the Core Components guide.
What this doesn't tell you is WHERE these things would go in a template. And... that... is my question.
We are just starting to use BIP in conjunction with JDE EnterpriseOne (8.12, tool set 8.97.12). For our first attempt we're creating our template over a new report.
I have a template where I sum two different repeating values (through the normal BI Properties) and place these values in two separate cells in a table. I want to sum the two of these together for a "grand" total.
I've seen the "examples" but they really aren't very helpful. The xsfo, etc. for doing addition is fine, but WHAT are the values to add and WHERE does the code go?
If anyone has done something like this or has experience using the embedded code I would appreciate hearing from you.

I would like to be able to start typing a URL directly (with no need to clear the field first) after opening a new tab with my homepage...

I've just installed the newest desktop version of the Firefox browser because my Opera doesn't feel very well these days. I'm trying to become friends with Firefox, and that's why I've changed the new tab settings in order to have my offline homepage loaded every time I open a new tab. There is an inconvenience — when I press Ctrl+T, the cursor appears at the end of the URL. It means that when I start typing, the letters show in the address bar after the URL of my homepage, so what I need is to clear the field first.
Is there a way to get rid of this? (If it helpes, I'm currently using Windows 7.)
I would appreciate if I could just press Ctrl+T, type a URL, and press Enter when I want to go to a website different from my homepage. Thank you for your replies!

Then you can use (Ctrl+L and) Ctrl+A to select all the text in the location bar or Shift+Home/End.

Firefox won't allow typing into Google search bar whereas Chrome will

Hi,
I'm currently running Firefox 6.0.2 on Windows XP SP3 with Outlook 2003 SP3. No changes made recently to anything.
Suddenly several errors happening at once, most involving Firefox.
1) Homepage Google. I cannot type anything in Google search bar.
If I replace it with e.g. Yahoo I can type anything, but replace it with Google and it is blocked again. I have re-booted, removed and replaced homepage etc no help.
2) If I type www.hotmail.co.uk in Firefox address bar at top of screen it refuses to find the site. Nothing happens at all. Any other address I have typed in it had found ok, but this one remains blocked.
3) It is difficult to see an immediate relationship to Firefox with this one, but it started at exactly the same time and also involves Google, so it is a bit of a coincidence otherwise. I keep getting Google delay messages on many of my emails. In fact they never get through, and I don't even have a Google email account!
I use SKY email, Outlo0k as above and both are working normally apart from the bizarre Google messages as below:

I have removed the actual email addresses but they were perfectly accurate. Resending the emails by cutting and pasting worked in all cases so it is hard to see why the originals failed.

In the address bar type "about:config" without the quotation marks.
Then in the Filter field type keyword.
Then double click keyword.URL
and type or copy and paste the following: "http://www.google.com/search?ie=UTF-8&sourceid=navclient&gfns=1&q=" without the quotations.

I can no longer type after typing a URL and autocomplete not finding a matching URL. How to fix that?

After I open Firefox I start typing the URL. After each letter I see autocomplete suggestions. Imagine I type "g", then "o" (google is shown as autocomplete), but then I enter "a". Since I have no pages that begin with "goa", autocomplete is hidden and the problem is, I can no longer type anything. All my key strokes are now ignored (backspace, enter... it dosen't matter). But I still see the cursor blinking after "goa".
I have discovered that Firefox must be focused on some other interface element (not in the address bar), because if I press the TAB key, the focus is again shifted to the address bar and I can continue typing. Sometimes I have to press TAB 2 or 3 times while entering an address to be able to write what I want. It looks like every time autocomplete is closed, the program focus leaves the address bar.
I've been having this problem for at least 4 or 5 versions of Firefox and it does not happen on every Firefox session. It can be solved by closing Firefox and opening it again. Pressing the TAB key has become kind of a reflex, so it's just annoying and I can work around it.
But why is this happening?

Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode|Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).

There is a lag in typing in the addressbar since FF4

I'm using a plugin on my Mac called "Keyboard Maestro".
How I use it:
I have 2 Firefox windows open in one screen, side by side. I select an email address in window 1. I press the keyboard shortcut that activates keyboard Maestro.
Maestro then copies the e-mail address, hits Command+` to switch to window 2 of Firefox. It then hits Command+T for a new tab, and types in a URL. Behind the URL it then hits Command+V to paste the e-mail address, and then hits enter.
This allows me to select an e-mail address in window 1, do the keystroke, and immediately find this e-mail address on an admin page I use for work. (instead of copy, open website, paste, hit search).
Now the bit where it's typing the address URL (needs to be a new tab) is lagging a lot since Firefox 4! In Firefox 3, the typing was blitzing fast.
I tried the same keystroke in 2 windows of Safari: blitzing fast like Firefox 3.
I then tried opening Firefox 4 again: slow again. I then experimented by typing really fast (just gibberish, but as fast as my fingers could move), and I noticed: Firefox4 address bar can not keep up with my typing speed. So there's the error.
Typing the same speed in Safari and Firefox3? No problem, it keeps up.
I have 2 add ons running, Xmarks 3.9.7 and Gmail Favicon Notifier 3.10.2
I don't think it's my Mac, as the typing speed does not lag in Safari or Firefox 3.

Hi,
I had also a lag while typing in the addressbar (or the searchbar btw) in Firefox and spent quite some time trying to figure out why.
I tried Firefox 5 beta, deleting the chronik, the cash etc...
until I tried to deactivate my addons one by one.
I have figured out that the addon "speed dial" was responsible for that lag.
Since I have deactivated it, everything works pretty much instantly.
