Mathematical formulas/ equations.

hi
i recently purchased a mac book air. i use it for studying and writing detailed lab reports with mathematical formulas/equations.
i don't know how to type these onto a document. i don't want it to do the sum for me just be able to write the actual formula so i can show
how do to a question, special charters etc etc
thank you for any help anyone can give

I suggestion using the application "Grapher" located in the folder "/Utilities"
In addition to being able to write formulas and fancy equations it will actually evaluate them too.
You can select the formula you entered and then copy and paste to many other places.  IT will, generally, paste as a pdf or EPS-- which will scale very well.
Here is an example:
You can also install MacTeX which allows you to use the LaTeX markup language to write equations.

  • Mathematical Formula in a document.

    Is it possible to write attractive mathematical formula in Pages? I have a trial version of Pages 09 but I can't figure out how to write formula easily, I need to write loads for my coursework hand-ins. I don't mean spreadsheet type formula that do stuff, just descriptive formulae of the type you'd write if you were doing algebra by hand. One solution is to write the equation in Grapher and paste it into pages as an image, but Grapher doesn't allow you to type subscripts, so it's not ideal. The latest version of Word has an equation writing tool apparently but iWork is cheaper than office for mac. Though I do find excel more powerful for the sort of scientific analysis I do so perhaps office is the better package anyway. Any ideas?

    If you havnet already purchased MathType6.
    Then you can use Grapher, the app you have pre-installed, for making the equations.
    The only downside is that once you have copy/pasted the equation from Grapher in to your Pages dokument is that you need to change it in Grapher, then copy/paste again in order to change something in the first equation.

  • How can I write mathematical formulas?

    How can I write mathematical formulas?
    I tried tu use the formula editor of ms word with paste and copy but it didnt work, because the formula
    was not in line with the text.

    I was able to use Word's equation editor; just type in the formula and copy it into the Pages document.
    I've heard you can do the same thing with the equation bar in Grapher utility, but I haven't tried that.
    Other options involve LaTeX, which is a typesetting program. I've looked at that but haven't really explored it.

    Hi everyone,
    Is any sort of softwares, like Latex on Window, to type mathematical formula presicely. And if there was any, do you have any instructions for using that? Thanks everyone.

    MS Office 2011 (word) has one built in, works well, but I am a casual equation writer.

  • Business Rule - Mathematical Formula

    Hi
    Is it possible to create a business rule that derives an attributes value via a mathematical formula? For example I would like to derive the attribute product volume by simply multiplying the values in
    the following attributes: Product Height * Product Length * Product Width.
    I am using SQL Server MDS 2012.
    Any advice on how to achieve this in MDS would be greatly appreciated.
    Cheers

    You can do this, and perform run arbitrary .NET code in an external workflow action.  See eg

  • Best way to include mathematical formulas?

    Hi all,
    my primary interest in possibles uses of iBooks Author are textbooks with heavy load of mathematical formulas. Without serious testing there appear some ideas how it may work.
    Folks, did anyone made experiences (especially with the final appearance on the ipad) including formulas both inline the main text and in individual paragraphs? Any idea about automatic referencing/numbering?
    Any comments are very appreciated. Thanks for your help!

    I don't know which is the best way but there are a couple that may work for you. 1 - check out the movie on this demo page (a description of how it was created is included) and 2-read Tutorial #18 and this example of the method.

  • Mathematical formula for even dashed lines?

    Is there a mathmatical formula for getting evenly distributed dashed lines in Illustrator? Something involving Pi, I assume.
    I usually get double dashes next to each other or unevenly distributed dashes.
    For example, I have a stroked circle with a width/diameter of 100 pixels. If I want 4 dashes with a dash of 0.5, I would need a gap of ???. If I wanted 64 dashes with 1 pixel dash, I'd need a gap of ???.

    Navarro,
    The perimeter, or path length, equals PI * diameter (3.141593 * W).
    A Blend with one step less than the number of dashes applied to a circle with a cut where you wish to start/stop may be your friend, as may a rotation, by 360 degrees divided by the dash number, of the first dash along with a large enough concentric circle (this may be done as an Effect and possibly expanded).

  • Doing mathematical formulas with numbers stored as strings

    Hi Everybody.
    I know I must be doing something stupid here, but I just can't see it.
    I'm just trying to do a simple maths formula of one number divide by another. However, one of the numbers is stored as a string.
    I have tried  'X' / Ccur ({'String'}) and even done a seperate formula that succesfully converts the string to a number and  then try 'X' /  ({'conversion formula'}) and still no luck.
    What am I missing and can anybody help please?
    Thanks
    Graham

    Thanks both.
    Works perfectly. Didn't see the ToNumber conversion in the choices available and have not used it before.
    I'll also provide better descriptions as well in the future.

  • Creating Complex Math Formulas in IDCS4 (Mac)

    I have to create a 180 page Engineering handbook for a company, with LOTS of complex mathematic formulas. It also has a lot of engineering drawings, sketches, tables, etc. I'll use IDCS4 on a Mac platform, OSX 10.6.7. I also have Acrobat Pro, PS and Illustrator from the CS4 Suite. Their final deliverable will be a PDF, which the customer will make available for download, so I definitely want to convert text, images drawings, etc, to the smallest possible size.
    Unfortunately, my customer has no electronic documents to work with. My current plan is to scan the original printed book, clean up the scans in Photoshop, then use OCR in Acrobat to convert characters to text. I will probably export to RTF, DOC, TXT or some other format so I can import into IDCS4 and create an electronic version (suggestions welcome).
    Unfortunately, Acrobat OCR butchers the formulas and turns them into goobledegook. What plugins or programs are people using to create fairly complex mathematical formulas inside IDCS4? Can I do it inside IDCS4, or do I need to work in Word, Pages, or a dedicated mathematical formula program? I will need Greek symbols, integrals, differential equation capability, etc.
    My main concern at this time is the formulas, but I am open to any suggestions on converting scanned images to vectors, handling tables, and the best way to get my text content into IDCS4 with the least amount of time and effort.
    Thanks for your help.

  • How to parse an equation?

    Here's my problem:
    The user enters an equation into a TextField. The app reads the TextField and records the equation into a String.
    Say the user enters 3x + 5. Now, I need to convert the String into an algorithm that will be able to calculate the value of 3x + 5 for any x.
    It might sound simple for 3x + 5, but consider an equation like this:
    (sin(x)^2 * 3cos(x)) / (e^(tan(x)) * sinh(4x) - x^x^x^345.55)
    How would I parse something like that?

    Well, I looked at the source code, and it uses several
    dozen classes with some kind of nodes and so forth
    I need something simple. Effective, but simple.
    The programme I am writing will be working as an
    applet, so I wouldn't want to have people first
    download Jep, then run the applet ...Just how simple is your "simple"?
    Every mathematical formula parser requires nodes and stuff to represent the equation in a tree and so forth; you'd be re-writing all that and that is effectively much more complex than just using a parser that is there. You don't have to know how or why JEP works to use it.
    JEP is fairly simple to use... did happen to you see the sample applet and its source?
    http://jep.sourceforge.net/sampleapplet.htm
    what about the usage doc: http://jep.sourceforge.net/doc_usage.htm
    Doesn't seem that complex to me... but if you really want to build a parser of your own, be my guest... btw, if you're into that, I know a great open source expression parser from which you might want to pick ideas! :)

  • Can I force Tbird 31.6 to display equations in reply emails?

    I have been copying and pasting equations from Word 2010 document (can't find out what was originally used to put equations into source) into email in Tbird 31.6. Apparently paste fine; can see equation when email is sent but not when reply comes in. Don't know what email client correspondent is using but Outlook is likely. Is there any setting I can change to keep those equations showing? I really need them to appear.
    Thanks.

    Sounds like a broken embedded object link.
    # Is it broken in your 'Sent' saved email?
    # if you compose email then save as Draft, then close original and open the Draft using 'Edit'..is it broken - torn graphic image ?
    # Do you know if the recipient can read the email ok - all info is clearly visible in their received email?
    # When you say 'on return, a mostly empty box appears,' are you refering to a 'Reply' from the recipient which includes your original message with the embedded object link?
    Some other options in Write new message:
    If typing a specific Maths formula:
    * Insert > Mathematical formula
    * Type formula
    * click on Insert
    If a saved image:
    * Insert > Image
    * click on 'choose file'
    * select the file and click on 'Open'
    * select : 'Attach this image to the message'
    * Click on OK
    Write in a eg: MS Word doc and attach to email.

  • Is there a way to type out formulas in document programs or a download?

    I take a lot of science and math classes and I'd like to type my notes and other stuff for class but it is very time consuming to type out the formulas (either mathematical or chemical, which are different but still with the superscripts and subscripts take forever) or maybe there is a download that someone knows about? or another program that lets you cut and paste? Anyway thanks.

    Hello,
    for simple formulas You can use "Grapher" which is included in the Mac Os X installation (look in Applications->Utilitities). From Grapher You can copy/paste formulas/equations to other Applications like Textedit or Pages.
    Commercial equation editors:
    MathType (http://www.dessci.com/en/products/mathtype_mac/default.htm)
    MathMagic (http://www.mathmagic.com/)
    Of course, there is LaTeX too (TeX installation is required):
    LaTeXiT (http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/17889)
    LaTeX Equation Editor (http://evolve.lse.ac.uk/software/EquationEditor/)
