Matrix Editor in LE 7.1.1

I'm going through Martin Sitter's training book for Logic and am hving a porblem with the tutorial on Apple Loops Matrix Editor. I need to add notes to the Matrix Editor window by using the pencil tool. When I try to add a note, I get a message that says I need to select a region first. This does not show up in the directions for this section. (By the way Martin, there are a LOT of errors in this book!). Anyone have a though on this?
Thanks,
Paul

Use the pencil tool in the arrange window to create a region on the instument track you would like to work on. . Select that region and open it in the Matrix editor. You should now be good. Good luck.
Oh, by the way, Martin's book sometimes neglects to mention when certain features are only available in Logic Pro. I know if you go to peach pits website they post updates and corrections to the book.

  • Simple question - multiple midi tracks in matrix editor

call me stupid but i am finding the matrix editor window quirky as!
I want to bring up multiple midi tracks simultaneously in the matrix editor but for some reason most of the time it will only show one, then sometimes mysteriously multiple appear - woo hoo! I have tried clicking and unclicking every combination of link window button to no avail. As I understand it one should have the purple link button selected (or no link, but not the yellow one) and then shift select or marquee the multiple midi tracks for them to show simultaneously....why does this not work it is so basic??!! all the tracks are different audio instruments on different channels so what's the problem?
    thanks for the help

You have to read the manual really carefully.
The trick is double clicking: when you double-click in the background of matrix editor, it will show all tracks, when you double-click a single note, you will only see the notes of the track it belongs to.
There is a menu item that says something like "Show only selected regions". If you select that and double click in the matrix editor's background, you won't see all regions, but only the ones you selected.

  • Matrix Editor & Multiple Regions: Moving Note Start Earlier Doesn't Work

    Hi,
When viewing multiple regions in the Matrix editor, I can't move the start time of a note to the left (leaving the end position the same). This move works just fine when viewing a single region in Matrix.
Funny thing is that although the note won't budge, the move is listed in the Undo History as "Undo Left Corner Change".
Feels like a bug, but before I go there...
Can anyone confirm this behavior? It would be great to know if it happens in 7.1.1 as well as 7.2.3.
    Best,

    MS,
Thanks for correctly pronouncing my name! LOL!
Wouldnt dragging the note or notes to an
earlier starting place and lengthen the right hand
side give you operation you wanted?
Yes, indeed it would. But then I'd have to remember where the ending should be.
Wait a second... (think, think, think...)
Ah, yes, I could slice the note in two, leaving the end piece as a place marker, move the first piece backwards to where I want it to start, then glue the two pieces together.
Good suggestion! Thanks for that. (DING! DING! DING!)

  • 'Link' button in Logic 7 Matrix Editor

Can anybody help me with a niggle I have in Logic. Whenever I select Matrix Editor and want to drop into an existing midi recording I do so and a new editor window pops up obscuring the existing midi notes I want drop into. This is due to the Window Link function on the left hand menu and is only resolved once the default yellow icon has been toggled to either pink or grey. As I don't see the need to open a new window on drop-in I want to set the default Link icon to pink or grey so as not to have to toggle this button every single time I open the editor window but can't find a way to do this.....is there ?
Hope someone out there has had a similar experience and knows how to change this. Thanks

Screensets have always been a bit of a grey area for me.
    There ya go!
Seriously, this is such a fundamental concept, you'll wonder how you managed without it before.
Open a new song (ultimately we'll need to save our settings as our autoload so every song starts with the same settings for for now we'll just explore functionality).
You'll be on screenset 1, as evidenced by the "1" displayed to the right of the menus.
Ok - press "2" on your keyboard - the windows will change to whatever screenset 2 is set up to be. Close them all, and open a matrix editor. Position it full screen, and turn link on (yellow).
Now press "1" to go back to screenset 1.
Now, what happens is, when you want to edit a region, simply select it in the arrange, and press "2" - the screenset will change to the matrix editor, with the selected sequence displayed in it. When you are done editing, simply press "1" to go back to your arrange, and select a different region for editing, press "2" to flip back to the matrix editor.
Now, it gets much more flexible than this - for example, on my "editing" screenset I have a matrix editor, event list, floating event list, marker window, transport, a second small arrange for directly selecting regions to edit and some other stuff. In contents link mode, as soon as you select a region in the arrange the editor windows will immediately display the contents of that region.
Try it out - it's a 1000% better solution than continually opening, resizing and closing windows all the time - yuk!

  • Viewing two matrix editor windows for two different tracks

I would like to work on multiple tracks at the same time using the matrix editor. I can only create multiple matix editor windows of the same track. An answer to this question would be very helpful.

    Hey Thomas,
I don't know, as you experienced, every time you jump from one track to another the matrix window updates.
I guess you have to deal with that.
Anyway if I read that it could be done I'll post you back.
    Regards,

  • View multiple regions inside one Matrix Editor?

How, or can it be done ?
I want to look at the content of more than one region inside one matrix editor.
    It actually happened once accidentally.
    How is this done?

    Phlange,
After you double click the background of the Matrix Editor (as mentioned above), go to the Matrix editor's "View" menu and select the "Show Selected Regions Only" option. (I found it on p.473 of the LP7 Reference PDF.)
Now when you select regions in the Arrange and open the Matrix editor, double clicking the background of the Matrix editor will show only the notes from the selected Regions.
    Hope this helps out,
    Mitch

  • Can't see Apple Loop Regions in Matrix Editor?

when i click on a region and open Matrix Editor, the notes are not shown...?

    Andybutchercom wrote:
Thanks JG, none of this will work though as ATV tab is now missing from iTunes preferences as well as device list
did you reinstall iTunes as the article suggested ? try removing iTunes completely (click here and follow the instructions), then reinstall it using the standalone installer from here: http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/.
note this will not do anything to your media files, playlists, ratings, etc.
another thing to try is to restore TV to factory settings, re-update it to the latest firmware, then set it up from scratch.

  • Option + Drag notes in Matrix editor problem

I cant say when this started but at some point holding option while dragging a note to copy it stopped working as expected. Basically I want to copy a note in the matrix editor and I want it to go where I drag it (am I asking too much?). Right now as soon as I drop the note in the desired position it jumps forward several beats. Did I do something that changed the way the option key works? If I just drag the note without holding option the note goes where I want it. But as soon as I option + drag. I get this wackyness!! its hugely frustrating! Thanks in advance for any help.

Well I have a workaround now but am still confused. I discovered that if I click the little button "featuring a square graphic" in the upper left corner of my matrix window (manual says its called the "Up One Display Level button—or
UDL button"), it fixes the problem... for that matrix edit window only. As soon as I close it and reopen it (by double clicking on a midi region) it goes back into crazy freak **** mode. Something else I noticed is that when I reopen the matrix editor window the little screen read out area (that displays the notes etc under Edit/Functions/View) says "sel 1" right above the notes etc. It says this when its in crazy freak **** mode. When I click the UDL button it changes from "sel 1" to "1/AudioInst 1" which is the instrument for the midi Im working on. So how do I get crazy freak **** mode to stop messing up my matrix editor windows? Its great to have a workaround but its a pain in the butt to have to remember to push this button ( that I never needed to push before) so I can properly option+drag a midi note. I tried reading the manual about this button but I just dont get what its for (other than turning off freak **** mode). And I forgot to mention my logic version before: Logic version 7.2.1 (959.30) Thanks again in advance if you can help me:)

  • Increasing velocity in matrix editor easily?

Hi all, Does anyone know if there is an easy way to increase or to take all notes in the matrix editor up to full velocity without having to do them each individually with the velocity tool?
I am aware that it is possible to highlite them all and drag the velocity up using the vel tool, but wondered if their was a shortcut or key workaround.....
    many thanks tommy

there is an easier way than that. hold down option as you drag up the velocity and you will be able to make the notes increase in veolicty up to 127. ie if you have 1 note at 110 and another at 127, the note at 110 will keep going up. sort of midi compression.
if you hold down shift and option, all the notes you select while you drag will be changed to the same velocity as the one you are dragging.

  • Snap in Matrix Editor

I know how to snap Regions in the Arrange Window, but how do you do it in the Matrix Editor? I see that the Reference manual, p326, says "When you move notes horizontally, they snap to the resolution of the Bar Ruler and the setting of the zoom function." But whenever I move notes around, it's like using the Control key for making fine adjustments, which I don't want to do. It's possible I changed a preference somewhere but I can't figure out where I might have done that.

  • Problem with Matrix Editor

I have recently been unable to open the matrix editor when trying to edit midi notes. I did a search to see if anyone else experienced this, I found some clues but I am still having problems. I am pretty sure it is my system and not the midi files I am getting off the net. I tried opening a track that I had edited before and nothing. The windows menu highlights when I press "command 6" but nothing happens. All of the other windows open except the matrix.
First I made sure the "links" button was greyed out. I can only get it to turn purple and grey. I thought it used to turn yellow. Is there some other setting I have mistakenly switch off. I am really frustrated and need a fresh perspective. Thanks for you time. Phil

Not quite sure what happened but for some reason I ran the setup as AU assistants again just for the heck of it. Now the window open with no problem or hesitation. I just love computers ( when they do what I want them to)!

  • Matrix editor: make selected notes the same length broken?

I used to select a group of notes in matrix editor, then drag one of those with SHIFT+ALT to make them all the same length.
This appears as broken in LPX (10.0.6), as the behaviour is inconsistent: sometimes it works as expected (as in LP9), other times it just de-selects the clicked note.
This looks like a bug to me... Any ideas?

    hi Eriksimon
    thanks that actually helped!
However, ALT+SHIFT is not SHIFT so I struggle to understand why they changed the behavior from LP9 breaking users' gesture memory to no apparent advantage.

  • Colors by channel in matrix editor

    Hi there
Does anybody know if i can see note colors by its midi channel? By default the color represents de key velocity. I've seen it is possible to assign the color to the track color, useful when viewing several tracks all in one single matrix view. Similar functionality would we have when there are several channels in one track (ch1 for staccattos, ch2 for legato, ch3 for pizzicato etc).
I think that's not possible but if someone knew how to isolate all the notes of one track by its channel that would be enough for me.
    thanks

Oh, I see... sorry. I thought you couldn't find the "Color by Region" function.
    Hmm... color by MIDI channel...
Off the top of my head, I don't recall ever coming across anything like this in Logic. I definitely could see it's usefulness though. I'll try and dig around later, and see if I can uncover something. In the meantime, maybe someone else knows if this is even possible. Sorry I couldn't help more...

  • Moving notes in Matrix editor

Is there a key command to move notes up/down without having to drag with mouse?
    Thanks

that's your left and right arrows. unless you have set them to be something different that overrides it. actually i am not all that sure that it was default, something stirs in my recollection about setting the command.
the key command is something like "transpose by +1/-1"
I think you'll find it in various editors.

  • Selecting a note in matrix editor and it doesn't sound

I always get the tone of the note when I select it. Now, for some reason, it is muted. What setting did I inadvertently change?

Make sure that the Audio Instrument track with the MIDI data you are editing is actually selected.
