Matrox VFW Codecs

Hello All,
Matrox has recently released their codec package to the general public and no longer requires you to have a hardware card installed or USB key to use them. Depending on your workflow, they could serve as a nice intermediate codec. Possibly even an alternative to Cineform in some situations. The best part is they are free.
I have been testing the Mpeg2 I Frame codec at 100Mbs and been very pleased. Here is the link and the Press release.
Good Luck!
http://www.matrox.com/video/en/support/windows/vfw_software_codecs/downloads/softwares/ver sion1.0/
In the past, Matrox has offered the Matrox M.Key/100 USB device that unlocks the Matrox MPEG-2 I-frame HD, DVCPRO HD, HDV, and other Matrox Video for Windows (VFW) codecs for use on 32-bit systems that don’t have Matrox editing cards. Since the launch of this product, M.Key/100 has supported only 32-bit Windows operating systems. With the recent surge of 64-bit operating systems, M.Key/100 is now incompatible in many environments. The popularity of Matrox codecs has also grown, which has increased the market demand for open codecs from Matrox. Therefore, Matrox will no longer be offering the Matrox M.Key/100 USB device. As an alternative to M.Key/100, Matrox is pleased to announce our new Matrox VFW software codec package, which will be available for download free of charge from our website. This package provides the following VFW software codecs for use on 32-bit and 64-bit Windows operating systems:
Matrox DV/DVCAM
Matrox DVCPRO
Matrox DVCPRO50
Matrox DVCPRO HD
Matrox MPEG-2 I-frame in SD and HD resolutions, with or without alpha
Matrox Uncompressed in SD and HD resolutions, with or without alpha
Matrox Offline HD
Matrox M-JPEG and HDV (playback only)
The new Matrox VFW software codec package will allow any system to use AVI files that have been captured on Matrox Axio, RT.X, and MXO2 systems, and to also create these AVI files for use on Matrox systems. This flexibility lets you use any workstation to do a rough cut, then copy the project and assets to an Axio, RT.X, or MXO2 system to finish the job. There is no need for time-consuming recapturing. As well, dedicated compositing or animation workstations can render finished elements that will play back in real time on Matrox editing and playout systems.
The new Matrox VFW software codec is available to all Matrox Axio registered users as a free download from the support section of the website.
Thank you,
Matrox Video Product Group

Hi Rafael,
I got a chance to install the new codecs, and you're right -- the crashing and memory problems have gone away!  It still takes longer than I would lilke for Premiere Pro to launch when the Matrox codecs are installed, but the delay is more reasonable now.  It's on the order of 10 - 15 seconds instead of minutes.  VirtualDub's Compressor dialog is also slow to load, but again it takes a few seconds now instead of a few minutes.
I like the high bit-rate Matrox MPEG2 I-frame codec in an AVI wrapper as utilitarian intermediate codec.  It's kind of like Lagarith in that it encodes a bit on the slow side, but it decodes much faster.  It's better than Lagarith because it plays back smoother in Premiere Pro at HD resolutions.
Still, the very best performing intermediate codec is UT.  Version 11.1 is lightning fast and very stable (as long as you never select the Assume Interlaced Video check box).

  • Media pending/black screen with Matrox vfw codec

    Hi everyone.
Recently I installed the Matrox vfw codec from http://www.matrox.com/video/en/support/windows/vfw_software_codecs/downloads/softwares/ver sion1.0/build33/, and I mostly use that for capturing footage from video games. (using "matrox mpeg2 i-frame hd"). The problem is when I import the .avi created into Adobe Premiere Pro CC, I only hear the sound, and the "media pending" message/black screen stays forever. When I use Virtualdub, I don't have any problem concerning the playback.
Do you have any idea how to solve this problem?
Thank you in advance for your help.
    Antony

    Thanks for the response.
Part of my problem is that until recently, I was able to import avi files to iMovie, which automatically converted them to DV format. But I was recently forced to erase my hard drive and reload the software, and this black screen problem iss the result.
Incidentally, I do have VisualHub, and following your suggestion, I decided to try that option, but ran into another problem. When I tried to launch VisualHub, I got this message, which you or someone else may be able to help me with:
    "Fatal System Error
Critical components of Mac OS X are missing or damaged on your system. Without them, VisualHub is unable to continue.
    The affected components is/are:
    - uuencode/uudecode. This may require a reinstallation of Mac OS X.
    - gzip compression library. This may require a reinstallation of Mac OS X.
    - bzip2 compression library. This may require a reinstallation of Mac OS X.
    VisualHub will now quit."

  • Matrox IFrame codecs not installing in AME

I'm running Media Encoder CS4 on a Windows XP machine.  After a  BIOS issue I won't bore you with, I had to repair my machine and reinstall CS4.  I have always used Media Encoder to convert our ProRes files to the Matrox IFrame codec to use in our Crossfire for playback.  But when I reinstall the codecs, they don't appear anywhere in Media Encoder.  The Matrox installer says that the codecs are installed, but Media Encoder doesn't seem to see them, and they don't appear in the list.  Do I have to drag something into a specific folder?
    Thanks!

Yes.  And I just updated Quicktime to see if that would help, but I'm still having the same issue.

  • Matrox DVCPro Codecs

I am taking a look at the Raylight Encoder Pro (Demo) because I need the DVCPro Codecs. (Particularly in Quicktime)
DV Film / RAylight recommends downloading the Matrox CODECS in conjunction with this.
Due to previous experiences with Matrox I am concerned and wondering whether I should install these. ????

I didn't know Matrox had a codec usable without their hardware. Did he mean the
    MainConcept codecs?

  • How to import cs3 projects into Premier CC?

I have several Premier cs3 projects using the Matrox system which I want to import into Premier CC.  Howeer the CC will not accept the avi files that were used in the cs3 software.  Do I need a special codec for matrox avi files?  Where can I get that?  Adobe obviously has it as I use it in the cs3 version?

    Hi,
Please download and install the Matrox VFW codecs from here: http://www.matrox.com/video/en/support/windows/vfw_software_codecs/downloads/softwares/ver sion2.0/
Note that while the CS3 project should open and the edits and Adobe effects will be intact, any of the special Matrox GPU effects (from RT.X2) will NOT be present.
If you should connect a Matrox MXO2 device, then you could keep the following effects from older RT.X2 projects when imported into newer CS6 or CC projects -
    * Matrox Color Correction (Primary and Secondary)
    * Matrox Keying (Chroma and Luma Key)
    * Matrox Wipes Transitions

  • Video is truncated at 1:30

My AVI video I am copying to new Windows 8 machine is truncated at exactly 1:30 using Matrox VFW codecs.  The videos wont play at all without those codecs.  The audio is unaffected.  VLC media player gives message "M703" codec not supported and wont display the video at all, but audio ok.  Premier plays the video & audio perfectly up until 1 min 30 seconds exactly and the video freezes as audio continues.  Duration is listed as 1:30 though it actually is just under 4 minutes in length.  All videos from my cs3 Matrox machine that are longer than 1:30 are truncated to that length.  A google search for "M703" codec has turned up nothing but ads for converters so far.  I know this is not a new problem but I have been unable to find a solution after several hours of scanning forums etc.  Any suggestions?

I presume you installed the codec.
I think the best thing for you to do is convert the avi's to dv-avi's

  • Multi Camera Editing with Matrox CODEC ( VS4 ) Card

    Hello All.
    Setup
I am recording 4 inputs from the Matrox VS4 via Wirecast 4.2 and also tried 5.0
    - 1080i @ 100Mbps
    - All the video footage play perfectly with no problems what so ever
    - I Have installed the Matrox VFW Software Codecs of a system which DOES NOT have the VS4 card
    - I can edit 1 video with NO PROBLEM.
    Problem
    - Using Adobe Premiere 7.1 CC with multi camera editing, the footage is jittery after a few seconds.
    - Using Adobe Premiere CS 6.0 with multi camera editing, the footage is jittery after a few seconds.
    - I have tried with 2 cameras up to 4 cameras and I get the same problem.#
    Other Test
    - I have tried 12 x videos which are MP4 in multi camera editing with NO PROBLEMS!!!
    - I am using 4 x 128GB SSD in RAID 0 ( 1450 MB/s) - Through put is not an issue.
    - I have also reduced the MB/s on the ISO capture of 50MB/s
This is the CODEC you need to have installed on your computer in order to edit the view/edit the videos recorded by the Matrox VS4:
    http://www.matrox.com/video/en/support/windows/vfw_software_codecs/downloads/softwares/ver sion1.0/
The Matrox Video for Windows (VFW) software codecs let you render and play back Matrox .avi files in your VFW programs without having Matrox video hardware installed. This version provides codecs that were previously available only on systems that have particular Matrox video hardware, such as Matrox Axio. This includes the Matrox DVCPRO HD codec, and "+ Alpha" versions of the Matrox uncompressed and MPEG-2 I-frame codecs. As well, the Matrox VFW MPEG-2 I-frame HD codec now lets you render and play back Matrox MPEG-2 I-frame .avi files in all HD formats (720p, 1440x1080i/p, and full-size 1080i/p).
The following VFW software codecs are provided for use on 32-bit and 64-bit Windows operating systems:
    Matrox DV/DVCAM
    Matrox DVCPRO
    Matrox DVCPRO50
    Matrox DVCPRO HD
Matrox MPEG-2 I-frame in SD and HD resolutions, with or without alpha
Matrox Uncompressed in SD and HD resolutions, with or without alpha
    Matrox Offline HD
Matrox M-JPEG and HDV (playback only)
Is this an issue that is present the Premier 7.1 CC or the CODEC or even both?
    Thank you all.

  • CS4 - Importing AVIs created with Matrox Axio

    Hi
Until recently I used CS4 with Matrox's Axio hardware. I've ditched this setup as the issues between the two were damaging my mental health .
So, now I'm using CS4 standalone. Trouble is, I can't open some of my old 'Axio' projects as CS4 can't identify some of the HDV clips that were originally imported using Matrox settings. These files have been created as 2 pieces: Filename.avi and Filename.Stereo1.wav by CS4/Axio - and when trying to import them CS4 complains that 'The selected file cannot be linked becasue its type (audio) does not match the original file's type (audio and video).
I've installed Matrox's VFW codecs from the Axio 4.1 package - but that hasn't changed the issue.
    Thoughts? Help?
    Thanks.

Recapture, rebuild, take this as a lesson learned about using Matrox.

  • VFW clips always render in Desktop Mode

    Hi,
Sometimes I use the following workflow: import the files compressed with VFW (Video for Windows) codec into Premiere, then preview and export them using the same VFW codec. During this procedure Premiere should not recompress the clips to which the effects are not applied. This works fine for me in Premiere 1.5, but in Premiere 2.0 and 3.0 these clips are always recompressed.
I tried several VFW codecs (Huffyuv, Morgan M-JPEG, Cinepak, Indeo) and the same happens for all of them. The only case, when it works for me as it should in a Desktop mode, are Uncompressed 8-bit/10-bit File Format use cases.
    What I actually do:
Make a custom preset with Editing mode set to Desktop and the compressor set to some VFW codec.
Import the material which is compressed with this VFW codec (all the video parameters match the project settings).
When the clip is placed on the timeline the red line appears above the clip (this seems to be not correct). After performing a preview the clip gets rendered and the line above it changes to green.
To ensure that the clip settings match the project settings I get the rendered preview file from the Adobe Premiere Preview Files folder and place it on the timeline. The red line above the already rendered clip appears again and the clip is rendered once more time (the problem persists).
So, I would like to ask is it possible to use the VFW codec in a Desktop mode without a full recompression during preview/export, or may be its a problem of my own single configuration?

Thank you, Jim. Your suggestion is based on the idea, that there is no need to recompress the original source files during the project workflow before the final project deployment, right? I just want to remind, that I think, this discussion does not lead to resolve the point of my original question, but here are my comments:
    > Either stabilize your clips in VirtualDub during their first pass (when you make then DV clips),
I need to stabilize just the selective parts of the material which actually will be used in the project (not the whole source since it is unneeded, lossy and time consuming procedure), and sometimes different presets are used for different parts. Which these parts are, I will know only after editing with Premiere. In Vdub during material preparation I only tune fields, luma/levels, etc. issues without thoroughly watching the source material.
    > use After Effects to stabilize them (which will probably do a better job anyway).
I like and often use the Track motion in AE, but not the Stabilize motion function, the Vdubs one suit me better.
    > use Dynamic Link, so no rendering needs to be done.
I think its a cool feature, obviously, by using the DL you have the ability to quickly change some parameters in both Premiere and AE at any time and this is the plus. I was not able to test it (my version is not Production Premium), but any such a feature has its drawbacks. Just a one of them from the Premiere help files:
    > After Effects renders the linked composition on a frame by frame basis during playback in the target application If youre working with complex source compositions and experiencing playback delays, you can take the composition offline or disable a linked clip to temporarily stop referencing a dynamically linked composition, or render the composition and replace the dynamically linked composition with the rendered file.
Many of the work I do in AE are time consuming operations. When I work with a huge number of effects, layers and nested compositions in AE I like to pre-render compositions to optimize the work inside AE and when I finish the composition in AE for me is better to render it. When AE compositions are complex (actually they are) and may render several hours, my computer and me may not survive with this.
There are other cross-application workflows available between AE and Premiere, like a copy/paste and project import, but they have limitations about which I do not want to care of mostly, while editing. Nevertheless, I use these workflows in simple cases (mainly when getting the materials from Premiere to AE).
I agree, that it is possible to avoid several generations by using current cross-application workflow. But with this workflow I will:
    1) Loose a lot of time on time consuming operations.
    2) Need to take care about limitations of Premiere/AE interaction.
    3) Be limited to use the Premiere & AE without my preferable types of external processing, which do not support the DL (including, but not limited to, a Vdub stabilization function).
To summarize, I prefer using Premiere for real-time editing without this workflow.
By the way (just back to my original question): could you, please, make the following few steps in your Premiere CS3, this may help:
    1) In Premiere, create a new preset based on one of the DV presets. On the Custom settings set General -> Editing Mode to Desktop, on Video Rendering set the file format to Video for Windows and the Compressor to Uncompressed UYVY 422 8bit.
    2) Import some small DV clip and place it on the timeline. You should see a
    i red line
    above it.
    3) Now, Render work area. The line above the clip changes to
    i green.
    4) Now, in the filesystem, locate the generated preview file Adobe Premiere Pro Preview files/project_name.PRV/Rendered -, make a copy of it and place this copy on the timeline. You will see a
    i red line
    above it.
    5) Now, go to Project/Project Settings/VideoRendering and change the File format from Video for Windows to Uncompressed 8-bit(4:2:2 YUV) and confirm. Now you should not see
    i any line
above the file copied from the Preview folder.
Does the line behavior changes exactly the same way in your application?
    Thank's for your help.

  • HD Codec to transcode P2/MXF footage to.

I've run into an issue that our Matrox Axio HD system at work uses a Matrox HD Codec that I do not have on my laptop and home system. Often times I need to take some work home and work on it, but I'm unable to use any footage that has been transcoded with the Matrox codec. Working with the original MXF files isn't really an option because of the sheer number of files and the size it would take to transport these files each day. I'm looking for a non-proprietary codec to render the footage to, in order to work with it from any system anywhere (i.e. doesn't require an codec installed, OR I'm ok with installing a free codec).
So, what my options were? Is there a Quicktime based settings that I could use and not lose quality of the video? Any other options?
This also lends itself to my home setup and the HF-S100 that I have on the way. I'd also like to render out the AVCHD footage in order to work with something that is not so system killing
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!!

DVCPRO HD P2 support came about in FCP 5.0.4. You don't use LOG AND TRANSFER...Nick showed the proper way, IMPORT>PANASONIC P2. But you also need a very specific version of QT as well. FCP 5.0.4 does not support AVCIntra...if that is what was shot.
    I have a tutorial...

  • More MJPEG woes

Alright, so Colin helped me out of a problem a while ago (A month? I'd have to check) - he got me the 64 bit Matrox codecs.
It's worked fine until this week (no configuration changes to point to). Now its crashing everytime I go to encode the video or render the footage. The faulting module is the codec itself. I've uninstalled/reinstalled and redownloaded/uninstalled/reinstalled with no change in behavior.
It's not my export settings (as those work fine under any other normal circumstance) and only when I am working with mjpeg footage (any mjpeg footage, so its not individual clips, or rather shouldn't be).

  • What Laptop for CS4 editing?

I'm looking into editing in Premiere Pro CS4 on a  Laptop machine using the Matrox Video for Windows (VFW) software  codecs to edit offline.  I need to be able to perform multicamera  editing with up to 4 cameras and do basic editing on a timeline.  We have 2  Axio LE systems at the office and we are setting up a laptop system so  that we can edit offline at home.  Then when we return to the  office we can just bring the project files from the laptop onto a Axio  for further editing.
I have a couple of questions such as; what computer should I get with  what video card?  I know matrox has a few but which one in particular is  recommended?  I don't just want the minimum requirements.   We use M2T  files for our editing that only work in matrox projects.  Will they work  using the VFW codec for CS4?  Will I need a separate hard drive for  video files, what kind, speed and connection will I need?  Firewire,  what? I understand what the minimum requirements are but what do you recommend?  I absolutely need a video card that can give me some preview out of the computer.
Also with the CS4 license, if I put our existing software on the laptop will we have any authorization problems.  Only one of the computers will be in use at a time.  Will I have to  buy 2 new CS4 to CS5 upgrades when I'm ready to upgrade CS5 or only 1?
    Thank you!

One license allows installation on two machines. If you want to install on a third machine, you need another license.
