MATSHITA DVD-R   UJ-857E will not burn CDs anymore

When I try to burn a CD in iTunes most of the time it says "initializing..." and then immediately goes to "finishing..." and spits the CD out. I get this EVERY time I use a Verbatim CD, but Sony CDs sometimes work. But, when they do actually burn, I have to wait 20-30 minutes before trying to burn another CD, or else it spits it back out. Is my drive kaput?

Before you give up on it, try cleaning the lens.
Use a lens cleaning DVD.
If you have some compressed air, shoot some into the slot.
Use a fine microfiber cloth (eyeglasses cleaning cloth) wrapped around a business card and gently insert it into the slot.
If no success, make an appointment at an Apple store genius bar.
Ciao.

Thanks for the tip re. cntrl v.  I've copied the diagnostics below.
I've tried all of Apple's troubleshooting advice without success.  For example, my burner (and drivers and cables etc) all work fine.  I've also tried all of their 'advanced' steps in relation to downloading GEAR drivers etc.  Nada.

  • My HP DVD-RAM GH40L SCSI DVD burner will burn CDs and DVD+Rs, but it will not burn DVD-Rs.

I have only tried to burn CDs and DVD+Rs before, and both work fine, but when I tried to burn a DVD-R, it failed.  I put the same blank DVD-R in my HP notebook computer, and it burned it just fine.  This happened twice, so it is not the DVDs.  I uninstalled and reinstalled the burner with device manager, but still have the same problem.  Is there a firmware update or something that will fix this, or do I just have a defective burner?  Thanks!

  • Toshiba Satellite L305-S5909 - DVD ROM / CD Drive will not Run CDs

I have a Toshiba Satellite Model Name: L305-S5909 Part Number: PSLB8U-05302F running Windows Vista 64 with Service Pack 2. The Drive in my computer is, Mat**bleep**a DVD-RAM UJ88OES
I really don't know when this started but we just discovered that our DVD / CD Drive will not run any CDs or DVDs inserted. When I check My Computer or Windows Explorer the Drive shows up. Also I checked the Device Manager and it's there also. I have tried uninstalling the drive and letting Windows Reinstall it and that did not help. I have also upgraded the computer bios also no results.  And I have tried different disks, cleaning the optical eye, etc. The eject command from the computer works but will not run anything inserted.
    Any Ideas?

i had the same problem with my L505D-S5965. you are going to most likely have to replace the dvd drive. the optical eye burned out in mine and from what you have already tried to do to fix it. that is probably what happened with yours. if it is under warranty you can send it to the depot or take it to a toshiba service center near you. if not you can change it yourself.it not to hard.
    hope that helps

  • IPod will not sync, and will not burn cds...

1.) When I connect my iPod to the comp the syncing process starts. The little wheel my my ipod's name starts spinning, then slows down, then freezes and itunes stops responding. I have to hit crtaltdel to manually shut down itunes. Then, I have to click on the little icon in the lower right hand corner that says "Safely Remove Hardware" to disconnect my ipod w/o messing it up. Fortunately, my ipod is okay, but I have not been able to update it since the beginning of May.
I have recently downloaded the latest 2 versions of itunes and the latest Gear program.
After I had problems, someone suggested downgrading to a lower version of iTnes. When I tried to downgrade to a lower version my comp would not let me do it. Also, I have recently installed to a new program, Alcohol 120%, and that burns dvds fine. I did install it after I had been having problems w/ itunes and my ipod.
2.)I can play all my music on my iTunes on my comp, but when I go to burn a cd, I get this message "Disc Burner or Software Not Found."

hmmmm. you've got rather a lot of burning software entries in there. (it looks like you've got some kind of Roxio product installed, as well as itunes and Alcohol 120%.)
by way of experiment, try the technique described in the following document (remember to take a backup of your device filter registry keys first).

do you still get the itunes message with just the iTunes filters in place?

  • Itunes 10 will not burn cds

I have always been able to burn cds with itunes until recently. I always do the itunes updates when I am prompted to do so and I do not know after which update this problem began. I finally managed to burn a cd by downloading Roxio and dragging the songs from itunes to Roxio. This obviously proves that the problem is with itunes. It is ridiculous that Apple hasn't fixed this.

You know how did I get it?
    1. Create a new playlist.
    2. Drag here the songs you want to burn (15-20, depending)
    3. Check in the lower bar how much MB are you going to burn. If it's more than 700MB (the aveeage of a regular cd, remove some some songs until set bit less than 700MB)
    4. Highlight, point to the name of the list on the left hand side (under playlists), Right Click > Burn playlist to CD and get the known features (if you want pause, audio CD, data, etc.)
Why no icon? Maybe Apple doesn't want to push this funcion, to avoid the reproduction and copies as per music labels request. They keep the burn CD but very discret for the people who ask for it, who really inisist to also avoid the changing of music software. This is what I can deduce from the way we have to Discover the cd burning.
Anyway, remember that it's useful for Protected songs mostly, otherwise there some old programs (like Roxio) which are more powerful and you can make high end edition, mixings and so on and finally burn.
IMO, I just made this CD now upon a friend's request. Otherwise I just use USB drives.

  • DVD Studio Pro 2 will not burn DVDs

I have recently upgraded to Leopard. I can now build an entire project in DVD Studio Pro 2. However, when I try to build, format, or build & format a DVD the application will "quit unexpectedly."
I contacted Apple support and was told to uninstall the program and re-install it. I did that and the problem still exists.
All of my software has been updated.
I understand the software is "older" but if it were unsupported software, why can I build an entire project and only have trouble when it comes to transferring it to a DVD?
My DVD superdrive has been upgraded, and I have burned photo DVDs and CDs with the new burner without any issues.
Does anybody know what else I can do?

    David,
I didn't mean to offend you with my frustration with Apple. I understand the need to upgrade operating systems. However, I don't believe that upgrading operating systems should make software obsolute. When Windows changes their operating systems, the programs you have installed on your PC will continue to work.
Leopard is many interations passed the OS that DVD SP came out and you would have the same issues in Windows with what software runs or not and usually Mac software has a pretty good lifetime. DVD SP has not been sold as stand alone for quite awhile unfortunately. Though I do have some issues with Apple from time to time, this is one of those where I cannot fault them.
Try Tiger (I am running PS3 on 10.4.11 MacBook Pro with no issues), but make sure to deauthorize your Photosshop 3 before doing anything on the sytem. As to Leopard, I am not a big fan yet, so unless you absolutely need it, you are not missing much yet.

  • DVD drive will not burn CDs?

I am having trouble copying CDs. I've tried to copy an audio CD using both Windows Media Player 10 and Toshiba's Sonic Record Now, but both produce an error towards the end of the burn process.
I've reinstalled the DVD Driver and reinstalled Windows Media Player, but these actions haven't remedy the problem.
Has anyone got any other suggestions that might help?
    Thanks in advance, Monkey

Try to remove preinstalled Sonic software and use Nero. I have used Nero on many different notebook models without any problem.

  • The latest version of itunes (8.0) will not burn cds for me

Ive been able to burn a few but the majority of the time Im just wasting cds. I click burn disc, insert blank disc, the mac then checks playlist. Then it says its writing playlist, but nothing happens. It sounds like the mac is working on it and when I cancel the burn it takes FOREVER for it to spit the cd back out. Can I just download the last version I had somehow? Im not liking this one.

    Hello,
It's important to keep your system software up to date. You indicated you are running 10.4.7. You need to be on 10.4.11. Go to System Preferences/Software Update and follow the instructions.
After your updates are finished, close Software Update from the Menu Bar, File/Quit. Next, run Disk Utility and Repair Disk Permissions. Disk Utility is in your Applications/Utilities folder. Launch DU, select MactinoshHD 10.4.x in the panel on the left, then select the FirstAid tab, then click:
Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished, Quit Disk Utility. Reboot your Mac, launch iTunes and try to burn a CD.
Also, if the above does not help, try this: Quit iTunees. Locate this file: com.apple.iTunes.plist
it's here: /Users/YourName/Library/Preferences. Drag that file from the Preferences folder to your Desktop. Launch iTunes and see if you can successfully burn to a CD. If you can, drag that .plist file to the Trash, empty the Trash, and reboot. It just means your iTunes preference file was corrupted.

I've never had any issues with it either, I still think it's a good utility.
For burners, an external would be easiest to use as it plugs into a port on the machine. The lacie burners are ok, overall decent software & firmware support. I tore my apart to use the drive in a G4 tower, software all still works!
Get one that can use firewire & usb. the PPC will boot from a firewire external DVD & it could also be used later, if needed, on a machine that doesn't have FW.
Another option is macsales.com here in the States sells the exact same slot drive apple does for about $90. They do ship internationally, about $25 USD to London. If you want an internal solution this would be the way to go.

my DVD will play DVD's but will not burn from FCP also the Finder does not recognize when I load a black DVD

    You need DVD burning/Authoring software.
EIther iDVD or Roxio Toast or try freeware burning software Burn for OS X.
iDVD is no longer available, but the last complete version that still works comes with Apple's iLife '09 apps.
You would need to search for this on online sites like Amazon to see if you can still purchase.
You install the iDVD app and all the authoring themes by doing a custom install of the disc and ONLY installing the iDVD app and iDVD themes.
Here are a few copies of this for sale on Amazon U.S. site.
