Matshita DVD-R UJ-85J DVD burning problems - drive going bad? replacement?

I purchased a couple spindles of TDK DVD+R DL discs from Newegg last week; got them yesterday and stuck one in my iMac to start burning some of this stuff I've got backed up (using Toast 10), and ran into a problem... it failed almost immediately with a "medium error."
I tried Disk Utility and it quit in a similar fashion on several discs, never actually burning anything to them.
I've stuck with TDK in the past because they seemed to be the most compatible, but now I was thinking that maybe they changed something in the manufacturing process that caused them to not work anymore.
Fortunately, I have access to a pretty new MacBook and tried using the discs in there, and they worked just fine with the same data and the same version of Toast.
About an hour ago, I pulled out a stack of TDK single-layer DVDs I bought a few months ago (and that worked with no issues in my iMac at that time), and slipped one into my iMac to burn a smaller set of files, and it failed in exactly the same way as the DL discs did yesterday.
Since then, I've been searching everywhere for information on this (including firmware updates and a place to buy a replacement drive) and found very little.
What I did find suggests that the drive might be going bad (or at the very least choked with dust).
I can't find anything solid on what drive I could buy to replace it myself, though.
And I'm not very optimistic about taking it to the Genius Bar, as I don't have AppleCare and it sounds like they would just put in an equally failure-prone Matshita drive that'll be dead within a year.
I'll try cleaning it as soon as I can locate one of those brush discs and see if that helps.
I've also noticed that it will occasionally stop mounting discs until after a restart.

I have a 24" iMac, Approx 2 Years Old, Mine was having the same problems as yours, I had Memorex DL DVD + R and half the time it would spit them back out and the other half it would fail at 50%, when before it would read and write fine. So I figured it was hardware when i was having the same problem on the boot camp side. So two days ago I took it in to the apple store in plano, they looked at it, said they'd put a new drive in, And it was free thanks to the apple care plan I had with it. Just picked it up a few hours ago and I just burned a DL DVD and it worked. So my suggestion is visit your apple store and maybe they'll replace it, ive heard amounts as high as $450 for replacements without the protection plan, maybe you could go firewire/usb external drive?
By the way, I can't remember what drive I had on my machine, wanna say it started with an "O", but they replaced it with a Pioneer, very quiet and seems fast.
Good Luck

  • MATSHITA DVD-R   UJ-85J Problem, help appreciated

I have been trying to burn an I Movie through I DVD on the Matshita DVD-R UJ-85J. The program seems to work correctly until right at the last minute. The burning process gets to Multiplexing and burning and suddenly the disc ejects and says done. The disc when reinserted still is blank. I am fairly new at this and was wondering if I am doing something wrong or is their a problem with my drive? Any help from anyone would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I too am having a similar problem. Whenever I burn a Memorex DVD-R through my drive, SimplyBurns stops the operation immediately, saying "disc not writable." I read somewhere that resetting PRAM fixes some problems; that didn't work. Furthermore, here is what System Profiler reports:

  • Intel iMac SuperDrive (Matshita DVD-R UJ-846) DVD Burning Problems

    Hi there:
Having a strange problem burning DVD's now. I have a January '06 intel iMac Core Duo 2ghz, 2GB RAM. My DVD burner suddenly no longer will burn DVD's. When I put in a blank DVD-R, it just spins for a bit then spits it out, no prompt or error message. When I put in a blank DVD+R or DVD-RW, it gives me the usual prompt that a blank DVD has been inserted and asks how to handle it. But when I try to burn, it opens the session, then quickly finishes the session (without any burning) and spits the disc out with an error that burning failed because of an inability to calibrate laser power level for the media. Sometimes it says due to a media error. It also will not read a previously burned DVD data disc, including the OS install DVD that came with the computer. It will however, read and play movie DVD's, and also reads and burns CD-R's with no issues.
I've tried the following fixes with the following results:
    1) Change media. Have tried several different types and different brands. No success.
    2) Burn DVD's from an external firewire DVD burner. Works fine.
    3) Hardware Test via the install DVD (on the external firewire burner). No problems found.
    4) Did a fresh install of the Tiger OS onto an external firewire hard drive, booted from that, and tried to burn. No success.
    5) Tried burning from Disk Utility and Finder. No success.
    6) Put a cleaning CD into the drive and let it run. Still no success after.
System profiler says the drive is ready to burn CDs and DVDs. CDs work, DVDs don't.
Any ideas as to what could be causing this and how to fix?
    Thanks!

If you guys did a search on the optical drives you'll discover that they have a rather extensive
history for failure. the failing optical drive process starts off rather slowly and worsens over time.
You could replace the internal optical drive but rather than performing surgery on your Imac
you would be better off going with an external optical drive.
If your IMac is still under warranty you can have it replace but I would still pick up an external
as well, I have read a couple of threads where even after having the internal replace the same issue
    happened yet again.
I ordered a LaCie that does rather well.
    http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001P5C9S0/ref=oss_product
I did however discover a couple of minor issues with my LaCie...
    1) When the mounts a disc , for some reason the mechanical ejection button
on the face of the enclosure is disabled. This is not a major issue right click and eject or, drag the
    icon into the trash
    2) if you are wanting to lightscribe be sure to go to the LaCie website and download the latest
lightscribe app, the one that came with mine was out of date and did not work in Mac OSX 10.6
    3) My lightscribed DVD's had a problem , the images where filled with rings from the center of the
disc out, I have discovered this is due to calibration , Amazon has shipped me a new Lacie that
I have sitting in a box next to me, I have not had a chance to test out the new unit yet.
You may also look at OWC's optical drives
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/firewire/optical-drives/
Either way make sure that you go with an optical drive with Firewire.

  • Issues with Matshita DVD-R UJ-85J

I have a (pre Intel) 20" screen iMac (PPC) with isight. My OS is 10.5.8. I purchased the computer in 2006 and it came with the Matshita DVD-R UJ-85J super drive. I used it frequently but not excessively, and 3 years later it quit burning. I took it to an Apple certified repair center  in 2009 and they installed a new one (same type). I have used it  some over the past years and now it is not working. I have read the old articles (301551 and 25402) on optical and disc drive burning and write speeds and have tried all of their suggestions, including different speeds and nothing seems to work. I have tried both TDK and Memorex 80min. 52X discs. Here is what happens: I put in the disc, then go to burn the disc. I see a gray bar that says Preparing Disc...I see the songs above the bar as they load up. Then the bar says "Burning disc- initializing"..candy stripe bar and then gray bar...this seems to go quickly...then I see burning disc - finishing with a solid gray bar..the finishing does not last long and then the disc ejects.
Then I see a message that says" the attempt to burn a disc failed. The device failed to respond properly, unable to recover or retry".  What are the problems with this Super Drive?!!!!! Perhaps, I need to get an external burner. I have checked to see what the Apple Store offers and found a LaCie. Do any of you have the LaCie 22xd2DVD+RW with LightScribe external burner? Is it working for you?
Do you have any suggestions for another type of external burner? DO YOU HAVE ANY SUGGESTIONS FOR FIXING MY MATSHITA, before I spend a hundred bucks.

  • Firmware upgrade for Matshita DVD-R UJ-845E to burn dual layer DVD?

    Dear All
I have a PowerBookG4 with a Matshita DVD-R UJ-845E which it seems apple has disabled from burning dual layer DVD. I've read around that there are firware upgrades that can enable actions again. I can't find any for Matshita DVD-R UJ-845E, though. Any ideas?
    Thank you!
    Angie
    PowerBookG4   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    angie1976 you have me directly.
As stated in previous posts there have been several issues with the Matshita Optical drives that Apple has installed in there computers. Over time the problem has been discussed and it would appear that there are several things that come into play here.
Apple has made it so that many of the drives they intall are in fact not capable of there full potential.
It in fact boils down to an issue of Copywrite Infringment. Apple doesn't want to put itself in a position to be open to Lawsuits from the Motion Picture Industry.
Many of the drives that do not work up to there full potential have FIRMWARE updates that are offered by the manufacture to remedy this problem and some do not.
It has also been found that the casual user that burns DVD's isn't aware of the huige difference in the Format's available for DVD Burning. and the many limitations of these different drives as far as Media and Speed of Media is concerned. Many of the DL burners that were installed will not burn DL. Apple has had such a huge amount of dissatisfied customers that many that will take the time and if they still have AppleCare these drives will be replaced free of charge.
Here are a collection of links that will help you to understand the problem as it exists.
I will also say that upwards of 85% of the problems user expieriance is with POOR QUALITY MEDIA.
    http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm
    http://www.videohelp.com/dvd
I also noticed that some others have chimed in as to the fact that Media was not the issue. This is not entirely true.
Here is another post that I answered that will also cover this subject that may help you understand the problem a little better.
Let me see if I can shed some light on this issue, for you.
Maybe some others as well can.
There are several Applications that are standard programs that come with OSX.
Of these, several have the ability to burn a project.
    iTunes....iMovie.....Disk Utility.
Each of the above mentioned applications were developed for a specific purpose. However, they are capable of doing more than the original developers intended.
The problem in my eyes is the lack of information for a new user to Mac.
In what one would consider the perfect world, you simply choose a project, drag it in to one or more of the applications mentioned above and simply click burn and you are finished.
This is not always the case.
Often users are left with the issue of no clear cut direction on how to use these different burning softwares, and the ability to have a clear cut step by step user interface.
All of the furnished OSX burning software is in fact usable and works well.
The problem is HOW TO USE THEM.
The more experienced users find this either to be a non issue or will take the time to work with these different applications until they figure out how to use them.
There are of course different Advertisements and FAQ's that cover these to some degree that leave users more confused than when they started.
One of the major issues that accompany this problem is this.
Not all Burners that Apple uses in there machines are the same.
Not all Burners will accept all the different Media's that are available on the market.
Thus leaving many users confused. Not having a clear cut understanding of what the difference is between these different Media's and there use.
    http://www.videohelp.com/dvd.htm
The above link offers an overview of this subject.
Apple has found itself in a delima with the Motion Picture Industry, as well as The Music Industry over the issue of offering there users with the capability of copying Copyrighted material. Thus leaving them open for Law Suits.
There was an in-depth article in one of the recent issues of Macworld Magazine, that went in-depth covering this issue.
It is almost impossible to cover all aspects of this issue on these forums.
There are of course different softwares available that make the burning experience much easier and user friendly.
Roxio is one of the industry leaders in the development of Mac compatible Burning Software. They offer 2 of the industry leaders in this area.
    Toast-7 and Popcorn.
This solves only one portion of the problem. Both of these software offering give the user the ability to copy about anything.
However, there is so much controversy over the issue of Movie and Music copying, the manufactures of the Computers, and the Burners try to limit the users ability to copy these, and thus be clear of any Legal Issue.
Here again rises the problem of computer users being mad because the industry has placed limitations on there ability to use there product in a fast easy to use method.
Again there are work around to all of these issues.
The problem then becomes who out there is willing to tell us what is the easiest most trouble free method of using these computers, burners, software, and media.
The burner manufactures offer there burners.
To get them to work to there full potential the users then must search out the 3rd party Firmware updates that will enable them to work properly. This is not an issue with all burners but quite a few.
Most readers on these forums have read about the MEDIA compatibility and poor quality issues these are covered in a prior link.
To sum this up, the resources are available to do just about anything one wants to do in the copy area.
Not every copy problem is the same because of all the different elements that come into the equation, Burner, Media, Software, Firmware.
So if a user has a problem and needs the information and the resources to copy there projects whatever they may be.
Be through, give as much information as you can.
Keep it simple, No need for the use of exotic terms that most people don't understand anyway.
In-depth. Tell all aspects of the issue and what you have what you are using and what you want to accomplish.
If there is an answer out there.
    Someone will Chime in.
The users on these forums for the most part are more than willing to share in there knowledge, free of charge.
    One last thing,
When a user gives you an answer for you problem, for the most part they believe it to be a fact. Sometimes this isn't the case, we have all been guilty of, this is not done with malicious intent. It is done trying to help.
I personally have been misinformed, or tried a fix, that will work in one instance but not another. So tell all you can about your problem.
    Cheers Don

I was having problems burning DVDs' from iDVD and it turned out my burner is at fault.
I have a 27 inch iMac using a OPTIARC DVD RW AD-5680H. Where can I buy a replacement in UK? I have seen these with SATA is this the correct cable for my mac?
I have also tried the Mac superdrive but my imac wont recognise it as it's been configured for macbook air and mini mac. I know I can "make" it work by doing something or other in com.apple/plist, but dont want to mess about in there.
I'm also told an external drive would work but does "mac compatible" mean only for air and mini as their own superdrive is or all macs?
Any help appreciated before I convince myself mac is no better than windows pc!

Thanks but this didn't really help.
I can buy the drives at a dozen places but none of them seem to know what connection is correct (SATA etc) and that includes the apple store. It was the store who told me buy the superdrive and all my problems would be over. Wrong! It isn't recognised by imac as it's confifured for air and mini mac. Only way to make it work is as i said in earlier post. (Would you be happy buying a car you were told would start and then discover you have to open the bottome and fiddle to make it go?)
The apple store I would not even consider taking it to. Days without the pc, over priced and don't have a good reputation for actually fixing things!
    But thanks

  • External DVD burn problem

I realize I am far behind everyone else here; but here goes.
    I finally got a DVD burner for my G4 iMac (snowball) 1Gig OSX 10.4.11. iDvd v. 6.0.4; iMovie v. 6.0.3.
    It's a (used) Lacie d2 8X.
I tried my hand with iMovie for the first time this Christmas using my digital camera in movie mode. Took a few minutes of the train set running around the tree.
I did pretty good with the clips in iMovie; even adding sound, titles and opening credits.
So, today I put the movie in iDvd; using the share function as instructed.
When I tried to burn the DVD; it went thru the sequence of building the DVD and then failed at the "burn" mode.
So, here are my questions -
Is there a problem burning on the external Lacie drive from iDvd?
I have DVD-R discs; is that a problem?
I tried Toast; but could not drag the iMovie into the the window (it just snapped back)?
The burner is 8X and I bought some 16x discs, is this wrong?
I hope this all makes sense and someone can help me out.
Well, trying something different to get the DVD to record.
I tried this time with Toast 6.
Got BurnPatch. Taost now recognizing the burner after unplugging it and re hooking it up.
I exported the movie as a QT file as directed in the Toast instructions. Drag/drop into the Toast window.
I am getting two error messages -
    "Drive error
    sense key=illegible request
    sense code= 0x30, 0x05
    Cannot write medium
    incompatible format
    and-
Couldn't setup the track for writing
last window (upon closing ) states
"this disc cannot be used because it is not recognized"
Could it be that using the 16x DVD-r discs is causing the problem? Also, they are a 'store brand'. If I need to use 8x; does anyone even carry them anymore?
    Help, please
    Thanks
    Jay

I have an external firewire LaCie Burner and, once connected to my iMac, it does not show up in Disk Utility, but does work. It is recognized in Toast (if connected). I've used it almost exclusively without any problems. I've also tried it with Disk Utility:
Try this: connect the external burner, open Disk Utility, select a disk image (.dmg) and hit the burn button; my Disk Utility then gives me the option to burn with either the external or the Superdrive and tells me to insert a disk. But, unless I've selected an image to burn, there is no indication or icon anywhere in Disk Utility (or on the desktop) that an external burner has been connected. I've always thought that as being a bit strange, but since it does work, I haven't questioned it.
Another possibility might be that you did not install the (correct?) LaCie driver? You might want to check their website, find the latest driver appropriate for your model and Mac OS and follow their install directions. LaCie burners do need drivers installed to be recognized by the OS.

  • DVD-burner problems using 925X NEO Platinum

    Hello,
I've experienced a lot of problems trying to burn DVD's lately. Both of the latest DVD burners I've used only burn DVD's at 1.5x speed. I read a post on this forum about a guy who experienced exactly the same and he was adviced to switch the DVD burner to IDE1 instead of IDE2. I did that, but never got my computer to start again. (It only said read falut, press ctrl+alt+del to try again).
I now use a DVD-burner from LG (GSA-4163B), I got all the latest drivers, BIOS etc. I also have tried burning on all (almost) different types of DVD's. The result is the same = only 1.5x speed. CD's burn only at 10x at the most.
I've also learned that my HD's only use PIO-mode, and cannot use DMA at all at the moment. WHY? They are both set to "use DMA if possible-option". I use a MAXTOR 6Y120P0 and a SEAGATE ST320413A.

Windows XP falls back to PIO if it detects transfer errors.
Possably a bad cable caused that.
You should be able to get back to DMA by deleting the IDE controllers from the device manager and rebooting.
In DMA mode your burning speed should pick up.
If you are using cheap rounded or extra long cables (over 45cm) I would consider replacing them.
OK, I've changed the MSI-cable (that was rounded and looked pretty cheap) that was connected to the burner
& DVD-rom, but it seems nothing really happens when I uninstall my (6) IDE controllers. They re-install themself
when rebooting, but still use the PIO mode. Should I uninstall all 6 controllers (3 primary, 3 secondary) at the same
time and then reboot, or what?
I bought a new, quite expensive IDE-cable recently, which I use for the burner + DVD-rom, but it's 60cm long.
Should I replace it? Is that really necessary?
    Thanks for the reply!!

  • DVD Burner Problems

Hello everyone, as you can see from the title I have been having problems with a dvd burn. The model is TS-H552, Toshiba-Samsung Model. OS X can read any disc and can burn dvds. Though it wont burn cds. I just cant figure it out and after much searching i have decided to post my problem. Thanks

Sounds like the hardware is not compatible with the Mac software.
I don't know anything about that model, so I can't say whether it should work or not.
The fact that it partially works is odd, especially since you say it works on the PC.
Sorry, I really don't have many ideas - except for maybe creating a new user account on the Mac to see if it's something in your user setup.

  • IMac Intel 24" with MATSHITA DVD-R   UJ-85J

    HELP...!
My drive will recognize some CD's and DVD's that my Macbook Pro 17" will read all
of them and my iMac will only read or mount a small portion of them,
I find if I write on a CD, DVD with a CD/DVD Marker Pen the iMac will not
Read or mount the disc, when I open Toast 8.1 and go to Recorder: Disc Info.
It tells all about the disc, and the disc isn't mounted on my desktop though ?
I've read where this is a major issue and some said to go out and buy a
external DVD Burner/Drive I don't think so I paid Apple for this one
And I expect it to work. I have the Apple Care Plan, but I'm disabled and at this
point can't drive to go to take the iMac in for service
?? Will come out to me ???

  • How can I work around a DVD burning problem

Steve Grisetti: How can I work around a DVD burning problem?
Question: Does PSE and PE -7 solve this problem or make any difference at all?
    Joanna

This article, from the FAQ list at the top of this forum, is valid for all versions, since it may be a problem for any.
    http://www.adobeforums.com/webx/.59b5f52c
The problem is not so much with Premiere Elements as it is with challenges faces in the operating system registry. Basically, DVD burner programs, like Nero, which are installed on your computer at the factory, refuse to share access to the DVD burner with other programs.

  • UJ820s DVD burning problems

HI, I've had my A60 for almost 2 years, it's covered by PC World's extended warrenty. I keep getting error when burning DVD. With Sonic Record now it tells me the disc is dirty or scratched even when using band new discs. I've tried using different brand names. With another shareware program I'm told that there is a fault with the power calibration area (1048).
The drive is a uj820s. The error occurs independantly of whether I'm using + or - discs. However, CDs do burn ok.
PC world have replaced that DVD drive 2 times and I'm just starting again with the same problem. It seems that a new drive isn't resolving the issue.
The files I'm burning are of no single type. They are avi's, mp3s, jpegs, tiffs, all types of files really.
    Any ideas?

    Hello Nick
You really have no luck with the drive if two times exchanged in just two years. Do you use it very intensively?
I really dont know what is wrong there because I have read many other forums where users report about same issue on different notebooks and different drives. Obviously it is not notebook or drive related.
My suggestion is to do the follow:
    1) Remove all preinstalled burning applications restart the unit
    2) Remove CD/DVD drive from device manager restart the unit
    3) Install Nero burning software (really good one)
    4) Make follow:
    - start > control panel > administrative tools > services > IMAPI CD-Burning COM service properties
    - under startup type set to Disabled.
    5) Try to create DVD-R and DVD-RW media using minimum burning speed
    6) Please report us if you can erase or full format DVD-RW media
    7) Use different medias on minimum burning speed
I must say that I am really lucky boy. I have my unit almost 3 years and the CD/DVD works like at first day.

  • Problem burning to CD/DVD on internal or external burner

My G4 is not longer recognizing cds or dvds on my internal drive.
I plugged in my new LaCie firewire burner, and the G4 isn't recognizing blank discs in that either.
As soon as I pop the disc in I get the message "This disc cannot be used becasue it is not recognized."
When I run DiskUtility it sees the drives and the discs, but lists the discs as "locked" and "read-only". Again, I have used a multitude of different brands and types of brand new cds and dvds; discs that used to burn fine on the internal drive. So what am I missing that has changed?
The external drive and various discs work with our Powerbook G5 with no problems.
I have been running 10.4.1 – that seems to be when the problem began.
I ran PatchBurn4.04 with no results.
    Anything else?

I MIGHT HAVE FOUND A FIX!
I was having this problem as well, were i could not stick in any DVD-R / RW.
But and CD-R and Regular DVD and CD would work (Dual 2.0 G5)
As i was Cleaning my computer up, I foound a burn folder i could not delete.
(folder with with the Burn icon on it)
Cmd-i and i see it is locked. i unlock it and delete it. For whatever reason... i stuck in a DVD-R and it read and Started to load my home movies!!!!
Step 1: Look for any Burn folder, Were you started to burn a dvd but it failed or anything like that. not sure how you would search for it.
Step 2: Is it locked? You'll see a padlock like icon in the lower left corner, it's silver grey.
Step 3: Cmd-i (10.4.10) Under the Color Label box you will see this little Gem: [√] Locked Unlock it so that it shows: [ ] Locked
Step 4: Delete said folder, and empty trash.
Step 5: Insert DVD-R, and enjoy.
