MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-85J

Dear Readers,
I have 1 year old MacBook Pro, I rarely use the optical drive. Now that i want to burn a CD, DVD or DL DVD using Roxio Titanium 9 i get errors.
One of those errors was:
The drive reported an error:
Sense Key = MEDIUM ERROR
Sense Code = 0x73, 0x03
After that i get a "The disc failed to be written" message.
I tried Imation & Sony media still i got the same error.
Is there a way to know if this is a software or hardware fault?
Appreciate your help.

You could try Verbatim discs, they seem to be the most compatible blanks. Have you managed to successfully burn even one disc? If you haven't try repairing permissions and/or running the hardware test from your install discs. If this doesn't improve your situation call Applecare. If, however you have managed to burn some discs all Applecare will offer is the usual run through of tests. We have three machines with Matshita drives in them and all of them are so temperamental that we now use external Pioneer firewire burners. The Matshita drive on the MBP I am using now has a 90% success rate with burning cdrs with iTunes but an equal rate of failures when burning dvdrs and I've given up trying to fathom out why this is. The Pioneers have 100% success rate of burning anything we have chucked at them and we have been using them for 9 months now. There are plenty of reports on the web of the Matshita drive's performance failures, here's one recent thread.
Hopefully the use of Verbatim blanks and repairing permissions will solve your woes.

  • Issues with Matshita DVD-R UJ-85J

I have a (pre Intel) 20" screen iMac (PPC) with isight. My OS is 10.5.8. I purchased the computer in 2006 and it came with the Matshita DVD-R UJ-85J super drive. I used it frequently but not excessively, and 3 years later it quit burning. I took it to an Apple certified repair center  in 2009 and they installed a new one (same type). I have used it  some over the past years and now it is not working. I have read the old articles (301551 and 25402) on optical and disc drive burning and write speeds and have tried all of their suggestions, including different speeds and nothing seems to work. I have tried both TDK and Memorex 80min. 52X discs. Here is what happens: I put in the disc, then go to burn the disc. I see a gray bar that says Preparing Disc...I see the songs above the bar as they load up. Then the bar says "Burning disc- initializing"..candy stripe bar and then gray bar...this seems to go quickly...then I see burning disc - finishing with a solid gray bar..the finishing does not last long and then the disc ejects.
Then I see a message that says" the attempt to burn a disc failed. The device failed to respond properly, unable to recover or retry".  What are the problems with this Super Drive?!!!!! Perhaps, I need to get an external burner. I have checked to see what the Apple Store offers and found a LaCie. Do any of you have the LaCie 22xd2DVD+RW with LightScribe external burner? Is it working for you?
Do you have any suggestions for another type of external burner? DO YOU HAVE ANY SUGGESTIONS FOR FIXING MY MATSHITA, before I spend a hundred bucks.

  • MATSHITA DVD-R   UJ-85J Problem, help appreciated

I have been trying to burn an I Movie through I DVD on the Matshita DVD-R UJ-85J. The program seems to work correctly until right at the last minute. The burning process gets to Multiplexing and burning and suddenly the disc ejects and says done. The disc when reinserted still is blank. I am fairly new at this and was wondering if I am doing something wrong or is their a problem with my drive? Any help from anyone would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I too am having a similar problem. Whenever I burn a Memorex DVD-R through my drive, SimplyBurns stops the operation immediately, saying "disc not writable." I read somewhere that resetting PRAM fixes some problems; that didn't work. Furthermore, here is what System Profiler reports:

  • IMac Intel 24" with MATSHITA DVD-R   UJ-85J

    HELP...!
My drive will recognize some CD's and DVD's that my Macbook Pro 17" will read all
of them and my iMac will only read or mount a small portion of them,
I find if I write on a CD, DVD with a CD/DVD Marker Pen the iMac will not
Read or mount the disc, when I open Toast 8.1 and go to Recorder: Disc Info.
It tells all about the disc, and the disc isn't mounted on my desktop though ?
I've read where this is a major issue and some said to go out and buy a
external DVD Burner/Drive I don't think so I paid Apple for this one
And I expect it to work. I have the Apple Care Plan, but I'm disabled and at this
point can't drive to go to take the iMac in for service
?? Will come out to me ???

  • Matshita DVD-R UJ-85J DVD burning problems - drive going bad? replacement?

I purchased a couple spindles of TDK DVD+R DL discs from Newegg last week; got them yesterday and stuck one in my iMac to start burning some of this stuff I've got backed up (using Toast 10), and ran into a problem... it failed almost immediately with a "medium error."
I tried Disk Utility and it quit in a similar fashion on several discs, never actually burning anything to them.
I've stuck with TDK in the past because they seemed to be the most compatible, but now I was thinking that maybe they changed something in the manufacturing process that caused them to not work anymore.
Fortunately, I have access to a pretty new MacBook and tried using the discs in there, and they worked just fine with the same data and the same version of Toast.
About an hour ago, I pulled out a stack of TDK single-layer DVDs I bought a few months ago (and that worked with no issues in my iMac at that time), and slipped one into my iMac to burn a smaller set of files, and it failed in exactly the same way as the DL discs did yesterday.
Since then, I've been searching everywhere for information on this (including firmware updates and a place to buy a replacement drive) and found very little.
What I did find suggests that the drive might be going bad (or at the very least choked with dust).
I can't find anything solid on what drive I could buy to replace it myself, though.
And I'm not very optimistic about taking it to the Genius Bar, as I don't have AppleCare and it sounds like they would just put in an equally failure-prone Matshita drive that'll be dead within a year.
I'll try cleaning it as soon as I can locate one of those brush discs and see if that helps.
I've also noticed that it will occasionally stop mounting discs until after a restart.

I have a 24" iMac, Approx 2 Years Old, Mine was having the same problems as yours, I had Memorex DL DVD + R and half the time it would spit them back out and the other half it would fail at 50%, when before it would read and write fine. So I figured it was hardware when i was having the same problem on the boot camp side. So two days ago I took it in to the apple store in plano, they looked at it, said they'd put a new drive in, And it was free thanks to the apple care plan I had with it. Just picked it up a few hours ago and I just burned a DL DVD and it worked. So my suggestion is visit your apple store and maybe they'll replace it, ive heard amounts as high as $450 for replacements without the protection plan, maybe you could go firewire/usb external drive?
By the way, I can't remember what drive I had on my machine, wanna say it started with an "O", but they replaced it with a Pioneer, very quiet and seems fast.
    Good Luck

  • After Mountain lion upgrade MATSHITA DVD-R   UJ-85J  does not recognize disk

I just installed Mountain Lion on an older MacBookPro,after install my DVD is no longer listed. when I insert a program disk it gives me a message that the disk is blank. does anyone know why this is

Welcome to Discussions - You have posted in the PPC iMac forum, I'll ask that your post be moved to the intel Forum. iMacs are notoriously picky about the media you use, one brand might work perfectly, another not. I use Phillips and TDKs, so you might simply have had a dud disk. Have you tried another TDK disk from the same batch? Or, as suggested above, another brand?

  • ERROR on  MATSHITA DVD-R   UJ-85J

this what i get when i was finishing a movie on toast 9
    The Drive reported an error:
    sense key = hardware error
    sense code = 0x09,0x01
    Tracking Servo failure
and on idvd it said an error with drive too !

You're about to equate a solution to your problem with voodoo, but this actually worked for me. I was getting the same drive errors and tried everything short of replacement, but the following trick worked:
    open system preferences.
    go to international
under languages: drag any of the other languages to the top, then drag english back to the top.
make sure "order for sorted lists" is set to enlish
make sure "work break" is set to english(united states, computer)
    then restart
Yes, it sounds stupid but what do you have to lose.
    Good luck

  • MATSHITA DVD-RAM UJ-875S - Anyone know which media are compatible with this

    Hi,
I bought the Matshita DVD-RAM US-875S from the PowerBook Guy and installed it in my G4 Pismo. I have corresponded with their support--who reply, but without actually answering. On PowerBook Guy's site, the thing is described as a Superdrive DL DVD-R-RW burner/player. I know this is a very basic question but I need to know if that means it will burn and play ONLY DVD-R and -RW whether DL or regular. I've asked them and they just say "It supports several different media. Ask on the Matsushita site."
Okay, there is probably some Matsushita site with that info, but I can't find it. I've gone through four pages of Google searches and haven't found a Mats site that has it. Panasonic Customer Support--or Parts--doesn't find it after a search.
System Profiler says it will write -R, -RAM, -RW, +R, +RW, +R DL. That's great if it does, because +R DLs are much easier to find than -R DLs. But why would PB Guy call it a -R-RW burner/player instead of telling you all the capabilities?
I found one site (CDfreaks.com) that says write speed as follows:
    DVD-R 8 x
    DVD-RW 6 x
    DVD-R DL 4 x
    DVD+R 8 x
    DVD+RW 8 x
    DVD+R DL 4 x
    DVD-RAM 5 x
Note that it give DVD-R DL, which System Profiler does not. And DVD+R DL which PowerBook Guy does not. Does anyone know what the capabilities of this drive are, or where I can find a definitive answer? Thanks for any help you can give. Giles

Okay, for anyone who's interested, here's what I found on a British site called TheBookyard.com.
The Matshita (or Panasonic) UJ-875 slimline (I assume that's what the S means) is a replacement drive for the discontinued UJ-85J, the only difference in the specs being that the newer drive is slightly faster on the DL writing:
    Specifications
    Interface: IDE/ATAPI, Ultra DMA Mode4
    Buffer: Memory 2 MB
    Loading: Method Slot loading
    Dimensions: 5.07” x 5.03” x 0.5”
    Read Speeds: DVD-ROM 8X, CD-ROM 24X
    Write Speeds:DVD-RAM 5x, DVD±R 8X (SL) 6X (DL), DVD-RW 6X, DVD+RW 8X, CD-R 24X, CD-RW 24X
So if it really does all this (haven't had time to test different media) I'm happy. My only question now (except re the error message in a separate post) is: Why does PowerBook Guy call it a DVD-R,-RW?

  • MATSHITA DVD-R   UJ-857D takes forever to erase 100MB file from CD-RW disc

My new MBP works phantastic. Only one thing is weird. The MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-857D takes forever to erase contents on a CD-RW, about 5-10 times longer than my nearly 5 years old IBM Thinkpad T30.
    Is this normal and expected?
MacBook Pro 15'' 2.33 Core 2 Duo 2GB RAM 160 GB HD   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   IBM ThinkPad T30 XP Pro

It might take longer, it depends on the type of drive your Thinkpad had. Most notebooks, even older ones, have 8x DVD ROM drives, while due to the thin nature of the MBP it has a 6x DVD ROM drive, which means it does work slower.

I went to my local Apple store last weekend with a similar issue on my 2007 C2D MBP and they quoted me a price of around £60 (excluding VAT) to replace the optical drive. That's about the same price as the external optical drive a bought for my RMBP.
Alternatively you could just buy a 3rd party external drive if you want to save cash but note that the external Apple superdrive is not compatible with MacBooks with built in optical drives.

  • MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-816 won't play *some* DVDs now (mysteriously!).

Quite mysteriously, my Mac is refusing to play some of my DVDs.
The DVDs aren't scratched or unplayable. I tested them this weekend on someone else's multi-regional player.
These DVDs most certainly did play before on this laptop (a late-2003 Titanium Powerbook--details below) but now just do not! Won't read at all. The DVD never mounts on the desktop. Sputtering. Eventually get spit out.
The two DVDs that my Mac now refuses to play are GRAHAM NORTON FOR YOUR PLEASURE [Region 2] and TABOO THE MUSICAL [Region 2 or maybe Region 0].
I can't imagine what's happened/happening. These played fine as recently as March 2007. I've done nothing to my firmware since that time (on purpose, at least!).
I just got the new BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE DVD [Region 2] and it plays just fine. It also plays all Regions (limits reset by Region X).
Any idea at all why my drive refuses to read/play certain DVDs?
Your help &/or theories are appreciated!
    Thanks.

It started the same way on my PowerBook G4 15" aluminum with the same optical drive (my laptop is from Sept 2003). After reading some DVD/CD and some not (even didn't recognize them in Finder), once, when I tried to write something on DVD-R (or+R - I don't remember) it didn't do the task - neither with Toast Titanium 9.0.4, nor with Dragon Burn 5.0.5, nor with Disk Utility...!?
One of Geniuses in one Apple store told me my optical drive is about to "die" and I shoul replace it. Well, the estimated cost of replacement was close to $450.
I decided not to do it within Apple.
I ordered new optical drive "*+Apple SuperDrive 8x DVD Burner Drive - Aluminum or iBook G4+*" (MATSHITA DVD-RAM UJ-875S - Reads DVD:Yes; CD-Write:-R, -RW; DVD-Write:-R, -R DL, -RAM, -RW, +R, +R DL, +RW; Write Strategies: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, DVD-DAO) from POWERBOOK MEDIC.COM for $99 + shipping. I replaced it myself for about 2 hours. Replacement by professional shouldn't be more than cost of the part.
Now, I have a new powerful and fast optical drive working as a dream.

  • DVD Burn Failed-Matshita DVD-R UJ-815

Please help: I can not burn any DVDs. I am trying to burn some pictures from iPhoto to DVD for storage. I choose the pictures & then hit the burn icon at the bottom of iPhoto. It will run for about an hour but then stops. I keep getting "Burn Failed: the burn to the MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-815 drive failed. Unknown error." I've tried several TDK DVD-R 2x discs & the original Apple DVD-R that shipped with my computer. I am able to burn CDs with no problem but this is the first time I've tried to burn a DVD. Can you also tell me if I will be able to use TDK DVD-R 8x since I can't hardly find 2x or 4x anymore. Thanks to anyone for any help. I have lots of pictures & I've got to get them off of my computer. Thank you very much.

I'm having the same exact problem with my Powerbook I think, it's a 1GHz with the same Matshita DVD drive. It'll burn the disc apparently, but it never finishes. it just idles in "Closing Session 1" (i'm using a burn folder in Tiger now)...
but the problem also occurs in iDVD. and when i burn disc images.
i've found that when i see it idling (at the end of a burning cycle), i can usually eject the disc and have a working disc, but with no guarantee.
I want Apple to fix this!

    Error message: 0x80020022.
Got this after burning 5 other discs. Two of which didn't burn and ejected. When I inserted them again, they did not appear on desktop. Had to use Disc Utility to eject them.   After those two issues, this message showed up when re-trying the burn process.
What must I do to get this drive to burn the discs?

Thanks for the info.  I have another question pertaining to your answer:  "What speed would be best to use so the drive doesn't become HOT--- lowest speed for a longer period of time. . . OR . . . at a faster speed for a lesser time?
Also, I tried using it half-hour later and got same result.  I then waited 1 hour longer and it worked then.

These drives do wear out, but can be replaced. OWC sells a replacement drive and has good installation instructions <http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/superdrive/MacBook_13>. You will need some tools and a bit of patience, but you will end up with a new SuperDrive in your MacBook. The model that I have is identified as MATSHITA DVD-RAM UJ867PD, and it works fine with all Apple software as well as Toast.
