Matshita DVD-RAM UJ-841s in a Toshiba

This driver was the DVD drive that came with my computer.
The drive was not recognizing any disks nor was the drive being recognized by my computer: I had an error code 39 in the device manager. I went through the troubleshooting on my computer. This led me to uninstall the device, but I can't seem to reinstall it, and now I can't find any DVD/CD drives in my device manager.
I have tried downloading the driver from the Toshiba website, but that did not solve my problem and though the download seemed to go fine, there is still no drive in my device manager and no drive recognized by the computer. I also tried using the recovery CD, but that was not helpful - probably since I don't have a working CD drive. I've read about the registry edit, but will that work if I don't seem to have a device at all? How can I fix this?
Thanks.

I have same problem.  DVD not being recognized by OS was first notice two days ago (end of June).   At first I had no idea what was going on.  In Control Panel I foung the ATA DVD showing with an exclamation mark.  Error Code 39.  I have gone into Registery and not seen any upper/lower filters listed (in 4D36E.... file).    I have removed DVD drive and disconnected/reconnected cables.  I have also uninstalled DVD using Vista.  Then attempt to reinstall.  DVD drive shows up on Control Panel after Vista attempts to install.  But still has exclamation and not recognized by OS.  Also, still shows Error Code 39.
Here is what has changed (best I can tell).  I went into Restore section anticipating being able to Restore System to a much older date.  Guess What???  The old Restore dates are gone.  The latest update from MS was June 26th.  And there are Restore Points since.  But, none older.  Appears MS update deleted all old Restore Points.  Think this update
killed my OS from recognizing DVD drive?
Anyone got suggeestions?  Greatly appreciated.  Also, can't imagine I am the only one have this/these problems.
Thanks for any guidance.

  • MATSHITA DVD-RAM UJ-875S - Anyone know which media are compatible with this

    Hi,
I bought the Matshita DVD-RAM US-875S from the PowerBook Guy and installed it in my G4 Pismo. I have corresponded with their support--who reply, but without actually answering. On PowerBook Guy's site, the thing is described as a Superdrive DL DVD-R-RW burner/player. I know this is a very basic question but I need to know if that means it will burn and play ONLY DVD-R and -RW whether DL or regular. I've asked them and they just say "It supports several different media. Ask on the Matsushita site."
Okay, there is probably some Matsushita site with that info, but I can't find it. I've gone through four pages of Google searches and haven't found a Mats site that has it. Panasonic Customer Support--or Parts--doesn't find it after a search.
System Profiler says it will write -R, -RAM, -RW, +R, +RW, +R DL. That's great if it does, because +R DLs are much easier to find than -R DLs. But why would PB Guy call it a -R-RW burner/player instead of telling you all the capabilities?
I found one site (CDfreaks.com) that says write speed as follows:
    DVD-R 8 x
    DVD-RW 6 x
    DVD-R DL 4 x
    DVD+R 8 x
    DVD+RW 8 x
    DVD+R DL 4 x
    DVD-RAM 5 x
Note that it give DVD-R DL, which System Profiler does not. And DVD+R DL which PowerBook Guy does not. Does anyone know what the capabilities of this drive are, or where I can find a definitive answer? Thanks for any help you can give. Giles

Okay, for anyone who's interested, here's what I found on a British site called TheBookyard.com.
The Matshita (or Panasonic) UJ-875 slimline (I assume that's what the S means) is a replacement drive for the discontinued UJ-85J, the only difference in the specs being that the newer drive is slightly faster on the DL writing:
    Specifications
    Interface: IDE/ATAPI, Ultra DMA Mode4
    Buffer: Memory 2 MB
    Loading: Method Slot loading
    Dimensions: 5.07” x 5.03” x 0.5”
    Read Speeds: DVD-ROM 8X, CD-ROM 24X
    Write Speeds:DVD-RAM 5x, DVD±R 8X (SL) 6X (DL), DVD-RW 6X, DVD+RW 8X, CD-R 24X, CD-RW 24X
So if it really does all this (haven't had time to test different media) I'm happy. My only question now (except re the error message in a separate post) is: Why does PowerBook Guy call it a DVD-R,-RW?

  • Why won't my internal MATSHITA DVD-RAM LF-D211A mount a blank disc or burn one?

Why won't my Dual Processor 500 MHz PowerPC G4, with 2 GB SDRAM, running Mac OS X ver. 10.4.11, equipped with an internally mounted MATSHITA DVD-RAM LF-D211A Drive mount or burn a blank CD, DVD-R, or DVD-Ram disc?
The System Profiler reports as follows:
    MATSHITA DVD-RAM LF-D211A:
      Firmware Revision: A109
      Interconnect: ATAPI

    What is wrong?
    Can it be corrected?
If so, how can I correct it?

I had that machine (PowerMac G4, DP500, Gigabit Ethernet). Expensive and bleeding edge at the time, but the optical drive proved to be of very limited utility. The DVD-RAM will burn only Type 1 and Type 2 DVD-RAM discs. It should also mount and give read-access to Type 1 and Type 2 DVD-RAM, DVD-ROM (including DVD-Video), DVD-R that you've burned on another machine, and CD discs. Here's a long-ago archived info sheet on DVD-RAM technology: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3072.
When prices for optical drives came down, I replaced the DVD-RAM drive with a more conventional CD/DVD burner.

  • Replacement MATSHITA DVD-RAM UJ-875 drive stopped burning cd's

My replacement MATSHITA DVD-RAM UJ-875 drive has stopped burning cd's in iTunes 10.  The error msg is: "The attempt to burn a disc failed.  The disc drive didn't respond properly and can't recover or retry".  When attempting to burn files from the finder I got the msg:  "The disc can't be burned, because the device failed to calibrate the laser power level for this media."
Is there any hope for this drive? It hasn't been used very much.

    ust a note of interest.
You don't mention the brand of CD and DVD's you use.
Remember there is a huge difference in the Media you buy and choose.
There is also a big difference in the Software you use to burn with.
There are several schools of thought on th entire subject of burning period.
Apple burners are historiclly very picky, and do not like CHEAP Media.
Here is a good guide to use, it is for DVD but I would use like brands with CD's

My laptop is relatively new, I've been Burning some Video files to DVD-RWs and suddenly my DVD drive has stopped working. It come up with multiple error messages ''format failed due to media damage'', ''format failed due to general failure'' and ''the disk inserted is READ ONLY''.
I also can't rip music from disks.

By ODD the simply optical drive is meaning
You could try to remove the drive from the device manager. Then reboot your unit and then the drive should be recognized again. Check if you can burn another medias
But if you are not able to burn ONLY the DVD-RW in my opinion its not a hardware malfunction.
The RW medias must be firstly formatted before burning.
    > 'format failed due to media damage'', ''format failed due to general failure'' and ''the disk inserted is READ ONLY''
The error messages in your first posting bake up my suggestion
Furthermore you have to check different brands. Not all medias are supported!

  • Mat****a DVD-Ram UJ-841s unable to read CD-R`s

    Hi,
I purchased my Notebook about 8 weeks ago but I am unable to view any pictures on any discs that I have inserted in my laptop.
When I insert a cd-r in the drive the laptop recognises there is a disc in the drive but when I open the D drive there is now images inside.
I know it is nothing to do with the picture package because one of the cd-r`s was made using the same package as the one I have on my laptop.
Also I am able to watch DVD`s and listen to music cd`s.
I would love to hear any advice on offer as how I can fix this strange problem.
    Cheers,
    Dave.

    Hi Dave
Sorry but I am a little bit confused with your posting. You wrote you can watch DVDs and listening audio CD. I presume your drive works fine. Please be sure that all pictures are saved on CD as data. I dont know what you mean with picture package but if the CD is created as data disc there should not be any problems.

  • Tecra A6: DVD-RAM UJ-841S region code is locked

After playing several DVD Movies from my homeland and USA the DVD drive is locked... Is it right, that the only way to get t back in working condition for Germany, is to replace the unit? ...or at least the ROM of the unit...
    Thank you for fast replies!

    Hi
    No, its not possible
Fact is that you can change the region code 4 or 5 times (I cannot remember) and then the setting is locked and its not possible to change it anymore on legal way.
Of course, you will find many tips and advices in the internet how to change the settings but I would not recommend to follow such guide lines because you can damage the drive!

  • Tecra M7 DVD: CD/DVD RAM drive does not work since installing Vista

I did a clean installation on my Vista Ready new M7. It had XP tablet to begin with and the DVD drive worked fine. Indeed I used it to install Vista (Home Premium).
Now it does not work at all. It spins but does not read. Device Manager tells me device cannot start. Tried to update driver and it told me that it has the most uptodate driver.
Downloaded all the drivers from Tosh download centre for Vista upgrade of M7 (which got bluetooth, screen rotation etc to work fine). But none of the downloads seemed to be a driver for the DVD-Ram drive. Can not find a driver anywhere else (including Panasonic site).
    DVD drive is Mat****a DVD-RAM UJ-841s
    Any suggestions?

    Hi
On the Toshiba driver page you can find the DLA for Tecra m7.
Did you try to install the XP DVD-RAM driver from the Toshiba page on the Vista OS?
    Maybe it will works
But listen the CD/DVD drive uses the common Microsoft drivers which are included into Vista or XP.
Therefore an additional driver should be not needed!
    One additional proposal;
Remove the CD/DVD drive from the device manager and reboot the notebook.
After new reboot the OS should install the drive again and should renew the software.
    Other hint:
    - Start the registry
    - Choose the registry key;
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
    - In the right pane, right-click UpperFilters and LowerFilters then click Delete.
    - and restart the notebook

  • MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-816 won't play *some* DVDs now (mysteriously!).

Quite mysteriously, my Mac is refusing to play some of my DVDs.
The DVDs aren't scratched or unplayable. I tested them this weekend on someone else's multi-regional player.
These DVDs most certainly did play before on this laptop (a late-2003 Titanium Powerbook--details below) but now just do not! Won't read at all. The DVD never mounts on the desktop. Sputtering. Eventually get spit out.
The two DVDs that my Mac now refuses to play are GRAHAM NORTON FOR YOUR PLEASURE [Region 2] and TABOO THE MUSICAL [Region 2 or maybe Region 0].
I can't imagine what's happened/happening. These played fine as recently as March 2007. I've done nothing to my firmware since that time (on purpose, at least!).
I just got the new BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE DVD [Region 2] and it plays just fine. It also plays all Regions (limits reset by Region X).
Any idea at all why my drive refuses to read/play certain DVDs?
Your help &/or theories are appreciated!
    Thanks.

    MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-816 (Firmware Revision: XXJ3)

It started the same way on my PowerBook G4 15" aluminum with the same optical drive (my laptop is from Sept 2003). After reading some DVD/CD and some not (even didn't recognize them in Finder), once, when I tried to write something on DVD-R (or+R - I don't remember) it didn't do the task - neither with Toast Titanium 9.0.4, nor with Dragon Burn 5.0.5, nor with Disk Utility...!?
One of Geniuses in one Apple store told me my optical drive is about to "die" and I shoul replace it. Well, the estimated cost of replacement was close to $450.
I decided not to do it within Apple.
I ordered new optical drive "*+Apple SuperDrive 8x DVD Burner Drive - Aluminum or iBook G4+*" (MATSHITA DVD-RAM UJ-875S - Reads DVD:Yes; CD-Write:-R, -RW; DVD-Write:-R, -R DL, -RAM, -RW, +R, +R DL, +RW; Write Strategies: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, DVD-DAO) from POWERBOOK MEDIC.COM for $99 + shipping. I replaced it myself for about 2 hours. Replacement by professional shouldn't be more than cost of the part.
Now, I have a new powerful and fast optical drive working as a dream.

These drives do wear out, but can be replaced. OWC sells a replacement drive and has good installation instructions <http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/superdrive/MacBook_13>. You will need some tools and a bit of patience, but you will end up with a new SuperDrive in your MacBook. The model that I have is identified as MATSHITA DVD-RAM UJ867PD, and it works fine with all Apple software as well as Toast.

  • Problem: DVD-RAM can no longer be read on MBP C2D

The "MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-857D" in my MacBook Pro C2D is said to have read (but not write) support for DVD-RAM media.
During the first few weeks of its lifetime, reading DVD-RAMs definitely worked. But now, no more, no matter what brand of media I try.
All other types of optical media continue to work as advertised (read and write).
I wonder whether this is a physical defect (but then why doesn't it affect other types of media?) or an issue caused by recent sopftware updates (but when I boot from an external DVD-drive using the very original MacOS DVD with no updates at all, why do I still not get read support on the internal drive?).
AFAIK there has not been any recent firmware update for this model. So what can be the reason? Should I let Apple swap the drive? Has anyone else observed the same issue?

    Hey Grant,
thought you'd like to know my "cleaning the lens with a cloth" worked fine - uh... but for about three days only, then back to the same old, same old.
I'd originally slid a business card covered with a lens cleaning cloth (from my camera bag) to clean the lens, and although the cloth emerged mostly pristine, I figured it must've done the trick as the drive started working again.
So this time, I decided to go in deeper. I actually took the whole drive apart - case off, drive out, drive dismantled - and I had a long look around to see if any parts looked dirty or damaged...
I found just one thing - the small silver rod on which the read/write head travels (the servomechanism that moves up and down the disc radius as it reads/writes) had some 'oily gunk' at the point where the travelling-head's 'sleeve' met it -  when I tried to move the head manually up and down the rod, it sort of staggered along. So I cleaned off the gunk with a cotton bud and then slid the drive-head up and down a few times 'till it seemed to run freely.
Put everything back - and fired up my Mac Pro. And the drive has been 100% fine since then - two whole weeks!
Maybe this time I've cracked it? (for my drive at least)

  • MATSHITA DVD-R   UJ-857D takes forever to erase 100MB file from CD-RW disc

My new MBP works phantastic. Only one thing is weird. The MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-857D takes forever to erase contents on a CD-RW, about 5-10 times longer than my nearly 5 years old IBM Thinkpad T30.
    Is this normal and expected?
MacBook Pro 15'' 2.33 Core 2 Duo 2GB RAM 160 GB HD   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   IBM ThinkPad T30 XP Pro

It might take longer, it depends on the type of drive your Thinkpad had. Most notebooks, even older ones, have 8x DVD ROM drives, while due to the thin nature of the MBP it has a 6x DVD ROM drive, which means it does work slower.

  • How to erase DVD-Ram disk

I have a half dozen DVD-Ram disks (from my now-dead DVR). They mount on the Desktop and I can see the contents (VRO and associated files). I am exploring the various Toast, Streamclip (etc.) options to play/rescue the files. Once that is done, how can I erase (and rewrite/reuse) the disks? Neither Toast 8 nor Disk Utility seem happy with formatting/erasing this media. Any ideas?
    ~ Keri

Ah,... makes sense. Thanks! And here's what it says [below].
So, it seems to say I cannot "erase" ... but I can "overwrite" (??), which is splitting a hair finer would have occurred to me.
Okay. Then, how would I "overwrite" the files -- what application could I use to do this? Toast? Other??

  • Qosmio G30-175: DVD-RAM Drive thinks its a CD drive

    Hello people, me again.
My 2 week old Qosmio G30 - 175 has a DVD-RAM drive that now appears in My Computer as a CD-Drive. Consequently (I think) it won't auto play DVD's. I can play them manually through Media Centre or WMP but no option appears in the drive's properties for auto playing DVD's.
Can anybody tell me why this has happened? It used to show up as a DVD-RAM drive. The only thing I have done is to install Nero Premium. Would that have anything to do with it?
    Many thanks.

Joao, I have tried uninstalling the drive and letting Windows re-detect it but still the problem persists. Thanks anyway for the suggestion.
Gipsyman, I will investigate further what other burning software is installed and remove it and see if it helps. Thanks.
Sorry about the delay but I have been working away all week.
BTW the drive won't autoplay CD's now either. Whenever I put a CD or DVD into the drive Windows brings up the normal Explorer window and just displays the contents as folders. Right-clicking and selecting Autoplay I get the options for CD choice only (ie play with Media Centre etc.) but the "always perform this action" check box is greyed out!
I have been in touch with Toshiba support and they are still looking into it.
My system clock loses time too, whether or not it is connected to a time server. :-( Thanks...
