Matshita UJ-816 Superdrive: Blank CD-R / DVD-R fail to mount; Error Code 13

Greetings all,
*deep breath* This will be a long question, but I want to be thorough and informative. Sorry.
My machine is a 1Ghz 12" PB with a Matshita DVD-R UJ-816 DXJ3 Superdrive. It's basically worked fine for reading & burning all common brands of data, video, or audio CD-R & DVD-R media using Finder, iTunes, or iDVD--until now. As recently as 2 weeks ago, I successfully burned an Audio CD with iTunes (although I did get a "could not verify disc" error at the very end, the disc still plays fine).
As of last night, I can suddenly no longer mount blank CD-Rs or DVD-Rs. The same problem manifests for both in Finder: upon insertion, the standard "Choose Action" dialog box appears. When I select "Open Finder", the disc immediately ejects, and I get "Sorry, the operation could not be completed becuase an unexpected error occurred (Error Code 13)".
If, on insertion, I choose to open iTunes instead of Finder, the disc does not eject immediately, but does eject as soon as I start a new burn from iTunes.
The drive still reads and mounts burned CD-Rs and burned DVD-Rs, as well as commercial discs. Otherwise, .DMG mount fine, as do flash drives.
Here's a list of fixes I've tried thus far, which I culled from these and other forums:
- Disc Utility: Repair Permissions
- "zapped" PRAM
- reset PMU
- Delete:
/System/Library/Extension.kextcache
/System/Library/Caches/com.apple.kernalcaches (folder)
- downloaded 'Panther Cache Cleaner' & did a 'Medium Cache Cleaning'
on all Local, System, All Users Caches
- Open Firmware (cmd-option-O-F at boot-up), entered the
following commands:
set-defaults
reset-nvram
eject-cd (just for the **** of it)
reset-all
- Created a new Admin account and tried to mount a disc from there (I already had 2 accounts on my machine, both of which are Admin, but just to try)....no luck.
The only thing I know of that I HAVEN'T tried yet is a laser-cleaning disc, but I'm wary of that, since they're apparently not recommended by Apple for slot-loading drives...?
Meanwhile, there were two other issues that just manifested, which I wouldn't have thought related except that all of it happened around the same time:
1.) The latest Software Update wouldn't install. After downloading, I got
"The update 'XXXXX' [e.g. iTunes, Quicktime, whatev] could not be verified and expanded correctly. Make sure you have permission to write to /private/tmp/501/TemporaryItems/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate, then try again."
I was able to solve this in Terminal (n00b that I am) using info from:
<http://www.cybmed.com/macinblog/2004/02/software_update.html>
2.) The latest Virex 7.5 "eUpdate failed", and "try again" was no help.
I solved this by just manually d/l-ing the DAT update from:
<http://www.mcafee.com/apps/downloads/security_updates/virex.asp?region=us&segme nt=smb>.
Keep in mind that I haven't installed any new software or hardware or made any system changes recently to explain this confluence of malfunctions. Those other issues could have been coincidence, but who knows?
As you might guess, I'm well out of warranty. Furthermore, I've been reading other horror stories here from people who shelled out for a new drive, only for it to go bad just like the first one--so I really hope it doesn't have to come to that.
So, suffice it to say I'm getting quite frustrated and desperate. If anyone has further suggestions or ideas for my drive problem, I'd really appreciate it.

PS
Is it just me, or is it ironic how the drive manufacturer has "sh*t" right in the middle of the name?
12" Powerbook G4 1GHz   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   Superdrive: MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-816 Rev. DXJ3

Without going into a huge disertation, on this let me just say you are not the first and won't be the last that has had issues with the Matshita 816.
I did find a work around, that I will explain.
If you do a lot of burning your drive stores everything in cache files and then all of a sudden will start giving you an error message.
I found running 3 different utilitys, I run them 1 time a week need to or not and haven't got any errors since.

These all three do similar thihgs but some do different things.
Now lets talk media.
I have had the same problems everyone else has had burning 1X and 2X with some of the poor media out there.
After doing a little leg work and trying a ton of different media I have found that Maxell 16X DVD-R will burn at 1X through 16X and works very well.
Be sure to read the packaging and it will tell you this. I opt to use the 3 packs with the individual Jewel cases.(Much Better Quality).
http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm
So You try those 3 free and shareware programs and go spend 4 dollars on the Maxell discs and see if that doesn't solve your problem. I sure did mine.

    Hello Robert,
First, Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), use Disk Utility from there to Repair Permissions, test if things work OK in Safe Mode.
Then move these files to the Desktop...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.recentitems.plist
    Reboot & test.
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.

Please confirm...Besides, doing a Search for the folder using the computer's Search function....
When you went to Libraries/Documents/, you did not find the folder with your personalized Folder Name?
I did not think that the burn to folder folder was a hidden folder but I checked nonetheless. I did not find it to be a hidden folder so
the Folder Option Show Hidden, Files, Folders, and Drivers is apparently not a factor in you not finding the saved folder from burn to folder process.
In Edit Menu/Preferences/General, there is a preference that relates to Hardware Acceleration and Intel HD Graphics 2000 and higher. Determine
if it make a difference if that preference has or has not a check mark next to it.

  • Satellite P200-1FC: CD/DVD drive will not start - error Code 10

My Satellite P200-1FC was purchased in January 2008 and preloaded with Vista Home Premium. The DVD/CD Drive is listed in device manager as "TSST corp CDDVDW TS-L632H ATA Device".
At first the drive worked perfectly, but has recently refused to start. Device manager now shows it with a yellow exclamation mark and it's status is given as "This device cannot start. (Code 10)".
Clicking check for solutions produces "could not load driver software" but no solution.
Searching similar questions in user forums suggests a use of a Microsoft Help & Support page headed "The CD drive or the DVD drive does not work as expected on a computer that you upgraded to Windows Vista".
However this involves modifying the registry! As a relative novice I am reluctant to do this unless I can find no easier way.
Must I bite the bullet and and enter this minefield, or is there a better way?

    >At first the drive worked perfectly, but has recently refused to start. Device manager now shows it with a yellow exclamation mark and it's status is given as "This device cannot start. (Code 10)".
This error is definitely caused by a wrong registry entry.
I had such error several times ago and I have solved it removing the lower and upper filters from these registry key:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
    Here are some steps how it worked on my Windows system;
    - I removed the CD/DVD drive from the device manager
    - Then edited the registry as described above
    - Rebooted the notebook
Im sure it will help you too.

  • CD/DVD drive does not work - error code 39 on Satellite A300

    Good evening.
I've encountered a problem with my Satellite A300.
I can't get the disk drive to function.
Device manager says the driver is current. But also says it is corrupt "code 39".
I have tried downloading new drivers from Toshibas website but they all come up as code 39 unable to install. The first I noticed it was last night when I was installing Norton 360. I had the cd it worked once then nothing.
Has anyone ran across this before?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi
I had the same issue and I found a solution here in the forum.
The problem is that your Windows registry is muddled up.
You should firstly access the device manager and should remove the CD/DVD drive from the device list.
Secondly you have to start the registry and have to remove the Upperfilters and Lowerfilters values completely from the following registry key:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
Finally reboot the notebook and test the CD/DVD drive again!

  • DVD Burn Failed-Matshita DVD-R UJ-815

Please help: I can not burn any DVDs. I am trying to burn some pictures from iPhoto to DVD for storage. I choose the pictures & then hit the burn icon at the bottom of iPhoto. It will run for about an hour but then stops. I keep getting "Burn Failed: the burn to the MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-815 drive failed. Unknown error." I've tried several TDK DVD-R 2x discs & the original Apple DVD-R that shipped with my computer. I am able to burn CDs with no problem but this is the first time I've tried to burn a DVD. Can you also tell me if I will be able to use TDK DVD-R 8x since I can't hardly find 2x or 4x anymore. Thanks to anyone for any help. I have lots of pictures & I've got to get them off of my computer. Thank you very much.
    Apple PowerBook Titanium G4 15"

    Mac OS 10.2.8 (6R73)
    Matshita DVD-R UJ-815

I'm having the same exact problem with my Powerbook I think, it's a 1GHz with the same Matshita DVD drive. It'll burn the disc apparently, but it never finishes. it just idles in "Closing Session 1" (i'm using a burn folder in Tiger now)...
but the problem also occurs in iDVD. and when i burn disc images.
i've found that when i see it idling (at the end of a burning cycle), i can usually eject the disc and have a working disc, but with no guarantee.
I want Apple to fix this!

  • Could a SMC or PRAM Reset Affect a Superdrive's CD and DVD Read/Write?

Hi. Would a SMC or PRAM reset make the Superdrive read CD and DVDs better (it mounts CD-RWs and DVD+RWs which is usually labels as untitled DVD but it can't seem to mount original disks that are in good condition like: Snow Leopard DVDs that came with this iMac, Grand Theft Auto IV, Spellforce 2: Shadow Wars)? Or SMS and PRAM resets are not related to Superdrive?
    Thank you in advance.
    God bless.

The SMCreset does affect the superdrive but your condidion may be from dust/dirt in the DVD on the lens system. Mine is real sensitive to dirt and smudges on the actual DVD but occasional lens cleaning helps. You can get DVD lens cleaners (with the tiny brushes on the disk) from most vendors that carry the media.

  • Superdrive error and inability to write DVDs (error code 0x8002006D)

I was attempting to burn media that totaled 4.4 GB on a 4.7 GB single layer quality TDK -DVD-R. It failed on 2 attempts after almost completing the burn, and then on the 3rd attempt i got:
"Sorry, the operation could not be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code 0x8002006d)."
I tried burning a lower capacity CD-R and it worked fine.
Played a music cd and DVD and it played fine
Played a CD-r copy of an original music CD and it worked fine.
I searched the web and it advised that:
    1. your optical lens may be dirty (almost seldom use it, not even to watch DVDs)
    2. a bad batch of media (couldn't be because I have burned from this batch for the past year)
    3. Lens needs calibration (possible via DVD/CD lens cleaners)
    4. try a different brand of media or try a different format DVD+R
My superdrive gets very minimal use, so I knew this couldn't be a "wear & tear" issue. I opted for option 3 and cleaned my drive using a memorex branded "OptiDisc" CD/DVD cleaner. After attempting to play the cleaner, it never did go to an Audio CD option, it merely spun for about 40 sec and spit out the cleaner.
I am happy to report that whatever it did, it must have recalibrated the superdrive. now it successfully burns DVD-R again.
    hope this experience helps.

whatever it did, it must have recalibrated the superdrive
No - it simply cleaned the lens system. Your #1 "1. your optical lens may be dirty (almost seldom use it, not even to watch DVDs)" Low usage might make the matter more likely; all it takes is a little dust or dirt to get on the lens to cause problems.
There are TWO optical systems - one for DVDs and one for CDs. The cleaning disc simply 'brushed off' each optical system lens.
BTW, the burning laser actually calibrates itself to your media before it starts each burn (there is a special area on each writable disc reserved for his purpose).

  • Can't see blank cds or dvds, no burn options

I recently started organizing my photos from the past year and wanted to burn them to a cd or dvd as an archive. I found that whenever I insert a blank cd or dvd I get music or video options but no burn option, and no icons show up on my desktop. The only way that I have been able to burn media is to create a burn folder and then insert a blank disk. These then show up on my hard drive but don't see visible on my b&w g3 or my husbands non mac pc. All of this is off a clean reinstall of system software and upgrades to 10.4.4

Take a look at your CDs & DVDs System Preferences. What options are specified for what happens when you insert blank CDs or DVDs? If you want to burn disks with files & folders on them, set it to "Open Finder". You will then be prompted to give your disk a name when you put it in. If you get the music option, you'd have to next open iTunes and burn a music CD from iTunes. Mac OS X will reserve a disk like this and not show it in the finder because it thinks you want to open iTunes and burn your music from there.
A DVD burned on a Mac will not be usable in a Windows PC. Because they hold more information, they'll be formatted as a Mac OS Extended format disk. Without some third party software, a Mac formatted disk like this is not readable by a Windows PC. However, a standard data CD burned by the Finder should be. It will be a "hybrid" Mac OS Extended/ISO9660 disk that should be readable by both a Mac and a Windows PC. It's possible the type of CD-R disks you're using don't work well with your PC's optical drive, you might try a different brand. Since the Blue & White G3 was constructed before CD-Rs or DVD±R/RWs were invented, it's likely it may not be able to read those kidns of disks as well.

  • Superdrive reads cds, not dvds!

I've had my Macbook since January 2007, and I haven't had any issues with it until about a month ago. My superdrive simply stopped recognizing dvds. Each time one is inserted, it spins for a few seconds, then gets spit out. If I try opening DVD Player while it's in it say that it's not recognized. The thing is, is it'll still recognize and play cds! I've tried several different types of dvds, since at first I thought it was because I changed it back & forth between region 1 & 2, but the same thing happens no matter what.
I've been trying everything I could find online to resolve this, I've done software updates, repaired disk permissions, reset the smc and done the hardware test. Nothing seems to be making a difference!
I really don't want to buy a new drive if I don't have to, like I said, it still recognizes cds! So any help would be fantastic!

This is typically symptomatic of an optical drive that is beginning to fail. If you live in the USA, you can get an external USB DVD player for as little as $20.

  • After downloading lion does not recognize blank discs or dvd´s cannot burn anything

I downloaded Lion and now my mac does not recognize any blank cd or dvd and I cannot burn anything, not with Toast 10, or with iDvd still not recognized.  Can someone help me??

    Hello
I have been trying to fix a similar issue on my wife's PowerBookG4. I cannot pin point when it started, but she noticed it a couple weeks ago when she tried burning a disc. We have come to discover that her drive will no longer mount any discs at all (blank or otherwise burned discs or software). If I had to make a guess it had to have started in the last month or so after some recent update. Maybe 10.5.2? I am not sure.
I am getting extremely frustrated with Apple though on this matter because I have been browsing multiple forums and seeing this exact issue over and over again and nobody seems to have a solution or correct diagnostic for it.
I have tried zapping PRAM, I have tried many types of discs, brands, etc. and nothing works. I know this is a Software issue, it has to be. There are a LOT of people reporting this issue. If necessary I will start linking to all the different posts that I found in the last few days.
Please post some help, ASAP. This has been a major inconvenience and I cannot believe that Apple hasn't discovered the problem with how many people have been reporting it.
    Thanks

  • After installing lion my superdrive does not read dvds

After the genious bar  installed lion my superdrive does not read dvds. I put in the dvds and the drive churns for a bout 3 minutes and the spits out the dvds full of scratches.
I have read online that other people have had similar problems with lion.
Is there fix for this? or does anyone know if apple care covers this?

Zap the PRAM and Reset the SMC, then try loading a DVD again.

  • G5 + Superdrive no longer burning DVD's

    Greetings,
I have an early G5 1.8 GHz single processor after I updated to 10.4.9 I can't burn DVD's - I can burn CD's - with the factory installed super drive(DVD RW DW-U21A) and get error message:
Burning the disc failed because of communication to the disc drive failed. (error code 0x80020022).
    Here's what I've done to date;
reset SMU, PRAM, NVRAM, I checked for a firmware update through various sources - firmware from Apple support is "not needed"
I've checked my media on other machines and it works fine.
I see that there are similar posts since the latest 10.4.9 update without much resolution. Am I missing something, anyone have ideas I haven't thought of? Do I need to replace my drive?
    Thanks in advance
    G5 Mac OS X (10.4.9) DVD RW DW-U21A

My first question is, which single 1.8 GHz system is it? There were 2.
The first was the mid-range entry in the original G5 lineup in late 2003. Fan cooled, PCI-X, 8 GB max RAM.
The second was the low-end system in mid to late 2004. Liquid cooled, Standard PCI, 4 GB max RAM.
The reason I ask, is I have the original system at home and the later system at work. The home system has worked flawlessly since the day I bought it.
The work system had burning issues almost immediately. Ended up having the drive replaced under warranty.
On the upside, Internal DVD burners are getting less and less expensive and you could actually get a much better drive for relatively cheap.

  • Superdrive won't write dvds anymore

I have toast and Popcorn - everytime I try to write a dvd I get a sense error message - this happens as it's trying to write the lead in - which suggests that the it is unable to write - any suggestions?

I did verify and repair permissions - how did so many get damaged? - but that made no difference - however your comment about media is spot on there appears to have been a few bad discs in the stack - I had successfully used about 80 of the 100 but then there were about 4 or 5 which gave the error message - now it seems to be working just fine again. Thanks for your reply

  • Error code burning DVDs

    Hi
I have tried burning two DVD's, for two different files, using Toast and each time I get the following error code as soon as it's written the lead-in.
This is an error message from Toast:
    'The drive reported an error:
    Sense key = medium error
    Sense code = 0x0C
    WRITE ERROR'
I'm using Maxell DVDs, which I have used for a number of years, without issue. I have already had the drive replaced once and am no longer in warranty (and Applecare has run out).
I have read that it could be a simple case of cleaning the lens, but I have an iMac with a slot-loading superdrive, so didn't want to stick in one of those lens cleaning discs with the brushes on, incase it got stuck in the slot.
    Any help would be appreciated.

    Hey Guys,
Did anyone ever find a solution to this problem? I'm using Memorex DVD-R 16x. I have repaired permissions repeatedly, reset PRAM and tried burning at several different speeds. I have tried burning a dvd project directly from iDVD and also saved the project as a disk image and tried to burn it from Finder and Disk Utility. I also noticed that when I "GetInfo" on the blank DVD-R, the permissions state that the disk is blank and that I can read/write. However, when I open Disk Utility, it recognizes the disk as a DVD-R, but it is "read only." I CAN burn a regular audio CD-R from iTunes with no problems.
I believe I started having these problems when I updated from Tiger 10.10 to 10.11 (the last update before Panther was released).
I am officially out of ideas. I am next going to try a complete reinstall, BUT I am not going to update from 10.10 to 10.11 since that seemed to be when the problem began. Thanks.
