Matshita UJ-846 burning speeds

I've just a got a PowerBook G.4 1.67 GHz Dual Layer Super Drive and it is a Matshita UJ-486 with firmware FAAG
and as I understand it burns DVD-R at 8x and DVD-RW at 4x but when I insert both DVD-RW or DVD-R it says in Toast
that it burn at 2x maximum, is it the media I'm using or the information I have about this drive is wrong?
Thanks for any advice

The information you have about the drive is correct.  First of all, what does the media say for write speeds?  If it is 8x or 16x DVD-R, it should be writable at 8x.
How to really find what is going on is to insert a blank disc and let finder show it as essentially a burn folder (but with the DVD icon).  Drag any file onto that disc icon, then double click the icon to open the burn folder.  Select "Burn Disc..." from the Finder's File menu and you will get a pop-up there which will have a speed setting set for the highest burn speed supported by the drive and the media (should be 8x or the media speed if it is lower for a DVD-R or DVD+R).  You can then cancel that dialog and eject the disc.
If Toast still only wants to burn a higher speed disc at 2x, then that is a Toast issue, or at least is certainly looks like a Toast issue.

I am sorry to seem short, here but from the code you
gave the Media you are talking about is FINE. Read
    the link on Quality.
I did read the link, but all I can tell from it is that Verbatim is in the top tier. I have no way to tell what media code the one that I am buying has BEFORE I buy it. That free application to check it after I buy it does not work for me. All I can tell from that link are what are the top tier media codes and the brands that use them. Yet if they outsource, then they could also be using inferior media, I gather.
IF THE CODE MATCHES IT DOESN"T MATTER WHERE YOU BUY
    IT>
I understand that, but that is not my question. I don't know the media code if the retailer does not list it.
SuperMediaStore gives the code. Great! However, Buy.com doesn't, but it is the same product #.
My question is if the media codes can be different for the same product?
In other words could verbatim supply supermediastore with a batch of 16X (95102) with a great media code, yet supply the same product to buy.com with a inferior media code.
Do you know if Verbatim supplies different resellers with different levels of quality for the same product?
Far right in the link shows those media's
    outsourced.
There are literally dozens of different Media out on
the market for you to buy. I say upwards of 60% of
all problems attributed to different errors while
burning is from POOR QUALITY MEDIA.
Most users will not take the time to do a little
research before they just go out and buy media not
knowing there is a big difference.
    Don
I did all the research you recommended. Went out and bought some Vertatim 16 X product #95101 because Vertbatim is recommended on that site. I have no idea what the media code is for this particular one. I couldn't find it anywhere, and I still don't know if Verbatim uses different media codes for the SAME product.
Unfortunately, The DVD that I burnt was unable to be verified and disk utility said it was unreadable. I was backing up files.
This is very frustrating. I did hours of research only to come up with failure. I am going to try and return these. But, I need to repeat my unanswered question. Please listen to the question below and answer if accordingly if you know the answer.
If supermedia has Verbatim 16X DVD-R Media 100 pack (95102) listed as Media code: MCC03RG20, does that mean that the 16X DVD-R Media (95102) 100 pack sold by buy.com or others also have the same media code?
I apologize if I sound repetitive, but I feel horrible at this point.

  • Powerbook Superdrive specs... Matshita UJ-846

Does someone know off the top of their head where on Apple's site I can find what the speeds and what media this drive supports? Specifically, if I need DVD+ or - for dual layer dvd burning.
Best buy has an instant rebate for Verbatim 20 pk DVD+R DL for $40.00, reg $60.
I remember looong ago, the superdrives only burned DVD-R's, and this is my first newer drive, so I could use a bit of help.
    Thanks,

    hello everybody
I have just burned 5 DVD+R double layer VERBATIM (2.4x certified 240) with special success
files are image disc (.dmg), 7.4GO
my DVD is matshita UJ 846 FAAG / MMC-3
It was with roxio toast titanium 5.2 (4disc) and with IDVD 5.01 (1 disc)
with roxio I have tried with different speeds (x2, X4, X8..)
always the same error message at the very end of the burning (roughtly 40minutes) "error /sense key =illegal request / sencecode=0x72,0x04 / empty or partially written reserved track / failure during burning the lead in or lead out"
with IDVD, I have tried to burned directly
it has crashed the apps just at the end !!
The most fabulous is that in both cases all DVDs function on my computer but not on my dvd player connected to TV. Whatever I do not feel comfortable with these incredible error messages
    Can you help ?

  • Disappointing burn speeds...

    Hi all,
I bought a MBP 17" CD last month, and I can only burn DVDs at 2x speeds. So far I have tried two different media types TDK and Nexxtech. Both are rated at 8x, but both only burn at 2x. Both are DVD-R.
My laptop has the following burner:
    MATSHITADVD-R UJ-846 revision FQ3T
Any ideas on how to make it burn faster? Is this something I can take back and have replaced because of faulty performance? The laptop is rated (on box and receipt as having 8X burn speeds). My 15" MBP even burns these same DVDs at 4x (being limited by it's 4x burner).
I do not own toast, so my burn speeds are coming from the finder itself.
    thanks for the help,
    -Me

    bigj6360,
I'll start off by letting you know that there is nothing wrong with your particular MBP or optical drive. This is an issue that is common to all Matshita (Toshiba) drives.
The isssue is that the drive will not recognize media labeled as "up to 16 X" as anything but 2 X. We all know that "up to 16 X" includes support for 8 X, but the drive does not. This is not Apple's problem, strictly speakng, but rather Toshiba's; they need to release a firmware update to their drives to fix this problem. Apple needs to include it in a software update.
That said, there are a few things that you can try. First, look on the internet for older 8X media. Any that you can find should burn quite well at 8x, but I recommend Verbatim media, as have others. I can attest that this media will consistently burn at 8X with your Matshita drive (it does with mine).
I recommend that you purchase all of the 8X DVD-R media you think you'll ever need now, before stocks run out. I am not certain that manufacturers are still producing media at this speed (it is certainly impossible to find it in stores any more). I suggest you purchase one "batch" now to test in your drive. If it appears to work as expected, you can then stock up.
    Scott
p.s. This media can still be found in some Sam's Clubs, but it has been discontinued in favor of Verbatim 16 X. -s

  • Error 4280 for Matshita UJ-831Da - Burn no longer works w/  iTunes.

    23 Dec 07
    MY SYSTEM:
    Sony laptop
    CD/DVD drv = Matshita UJ-831Da
    iTunes ver. 7.5.0.20
    PROBLEM:
    1. Burn quit working when iTunes upgraded to 7.2.
    2. I now get Error 4280.
    3. The only change was an upgrade to iTunes.
    4. No other software, or OS, changed on the system.
    5. Burn always worked with old ver. of iTunes.
    6. Burn still works with Win Media Player.
    7. Burn still works with all other software.
    8. iTunes will not upgrade itself now, nor allow "down"grade.
    9. Slowing burn speed does not eliminate error 4280.
    10. "Run Diagnostics" causes whole system to freeze and crash.
    11. Creating new account on system does not eliminate error 4280
    12. Creating new account on system does not eliminate freeze / crash.
    13. I have credit with iTunes store that cannot be used until fixed.
    QUESTION:
This is an Apple iTunes ONLY software problem. What is the fix?
    Thanks,

For my Matshita UJ-831Da CD/DVD drive, the driver version showing in device manager is 5.1.2535.0. I just now clicked on "update driver" and the reply was that a newer version could not be found.
But why would doing a "Run Diagnostics" in iTunes now freeze / crash my whole system when it never did before? It only began doing that after it also began failing to burn CDs. Again, the iTunes software is the only software that has ceased to burn CDs.
Several months ago, I finally reached by phone a girl at Apple tech support who first denied there were any known problems. But when I told her that the web was full of thousands of people screaming about this very issue she recanted and admitted that iTunes was having these problems, that they had posted the fix for some of the other CD/DVD drives but not mine. She then said, "but if you pay $35 I'll tell you how to fix it." Absolutely unethical. That's like buying a car then being told that there's now an extra fee for being told how to start it. She may have lied about knowing what the fix is, but either way it's absolutely unethical.
The problem is iTunes. iTunes changed and now won't drive the same current drive it worked with when iTunes accepted my money, in advance, to purchase and burn music at future dates. iTunes should fix the problem.
I'm willing to go through the leg-work, to try all of Apple's instructions here, but Apple also needs to follow through with this.
    Thanks again for your help.

  • Max burning speed for iMac drive?

Internal SuperDrive is MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-875
    Should I burn at 8x or 16x?
    Alexa

    Hi
In iDVD up to version 6 You can't set burn speed.
    In iDVD08 and 09 - You can
If You use Roxio Toast™ - You can
Apple Disk Util tool - You can set here too
If You don't select iDVD sets speed acordingly to DVD disk eg x16
As faster - as many write errors
I use x1 when able to select
On older iDVD I use DVD x2 disks.
    I would
    • Use iDVD to do a DiskImage
    • Use Disk Util tool or Toast™ to make the burn at x1 speed
Using iDVD 4 - then You need a Hack to make it able to do the DiskImage

Having the same problem, since 7.7 and now 8. Have my library on an external hard drive and used to not have any problems. Took average of 5-6 minutes a CD, now 18 to 19 minutes. Could it be because of a problem with USB and my external? Seems like USB is causing a lot of problems in 8.

  • Burning speed only 4x max.

    Hi Everybody,
Ever since upgrading to 5.0.1.4. my burning speed has dropped to only 4x maximum! That takes almost 20 minutes to burn a cd. I took b noir's advice and updated the firmware of the CD drive, but no difference.
    Here are my CD diagnostics:
Microsoft Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2 (Build 2600)

IDE\CdRomMATSHITAUJ-812_________________________K103___, Bus Type ATA, Bus Address [0,0]
If you have multiple drives on the same IDE or SCSI bus, these drives may interfere with each other.
Some computers need an update to the ATA or IDE bus driver, or Intel chipset. If iTunes has problems recognizing CDs or hanging or crashing while importing or burning CDs, check the support site for the manufacturer of your computer or motherboard.

    Roman,
Have you been to the Sony support site to look for a new ATA driver? If you go to that main page, click the "detect my model" link. Look for a driver update, probably labeled something like "Intel Chipset Driver".
    http://esupport.sony.com/perl/select-system.pl?PRODTYPE=24&NAVDISP=pc
I can't find the model number you gave me manually, so I can't look for you.
But you know, the drive speed listed in the CD diagnostics clearly say that the drive is reporting that it can only burn at 4x with the media you have in there. This is media dependent. Have you tried other brands / kinds of media?

  • Itunes can't burn this cd because the burn speed is too fast for your cd...

For the first time since upgrading to 10.3.9 I'm trying to burn a data disc from iTunes to backup some files. It fails every time and ruins the blank CD. This is getting expensive!
The CDs are Phillips CD-R 52x. (Yes, I've used blanks from this very box before the 10.3.9 upgrade and it never failed before.) iTunes was set to 24x burn then changed to "maximum possible" for the burn speed.
Most times it looks like it's burning the playlist but around the 5th file it spits it out and gives the error "itunes can't burn this cd because the burn speed is too fast for your cd burner or media". Sometims it just locks up itunes with "checking media" and I have to force quit iTunes. Then the disc is ruined. It won't even show up in Finder.
Ugh. Anyone know how to fix this?

  • Poor Burning Speeds

Okay so I noticed today whilst burning stuff that it was going quite slowly...
I have the MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-845E and get burn speeds of 8x for DVD+R and 2x for DVD-R...
i dont know if its just these two types of media specifically or what but this seems a little slow - specifically 2x. Anyone have any suggestions?

My quess is a Media issue.
DVD-R should run at the same speed or faster than the + Media.
DVD -R Media is still the most widely recognised and used Media.
    http://www.videohelp.com/dvd
Be sure you use only top quality media as well.
I use only Media that is wrapped in it's individual Jewel Cases and I also only use media that says on the packaging that it will burn at 1X, 2X, 4X, 8X, and 16X. This Media tends to be of much hiher quality than the 30, 50, or 100, Spool lots.

Hi. I;m getting trouble trying DL +R disk burning. My iMac has an MATSHITA UJ-846 version FA0G is this the lastest version for my drive ? if not, where can I get the lastest firmware ? Please, my finalcut original disks needs an urgent backup !!!

Yes it is thelast firmware. Mine has stopped being able to burn for a year now, it still reads cd & dvd but no burn (always error). I tried to clean with special cleaning disk (dry) so I went finally for an external burner see my old post http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1927719&tstart=0
So try zapping the PRAM maybe and then clean and if not get it replaced (under warranty) or go for external or...
    Good luck in any case!

Sounds like the CD drive died. Luckily they cost next to nothing to replace. Or get an external LaCie instead. I have a dual G4 1.25 and the CD drive was always so anemic I use a LaCie Porsche with it.

  • Can't burn disc via iTunes. Burn speed too fast. AGAIN!

"iTunes can't burn this CD because the burn speed is too fast for your CD burner or media. Choose a lower speed in the burning pane of iTunes Preferences then try burning again".
I have been having on going problems burning CD’s in iTunes for YEARS, and I know I am not the only one. I get the error message above. Having checked the forum at the time, and posted for help, I am know there is no real solution except to change brand of disc.
Thing is, now I can’t get ANY brands to work. I’ve been through Verbatim, Maxell, JVC, Sony, but none work. The only brand that would work were TDK audios which I can no longer find anywhere.
I know its not the burner, as Toast works fine, and I know I am not alone. Anyone got any ideas?
Even after years Apple seem to be blanking this question. It’s very frustrating not being able to burn my purchased itunes downloads to disc.

To anyone who is interested I think I may have found a possible solution. When you put a blank disc in the drive, wait about 30-60 seconds or so for it to stop spinning before burning.
This seems to work. It's a bit sticky but eventually works. I tried both TDK & Maxwell discs and 9 out of 11 worked. Absolutely no reason why the other 2 didn't, but it's a lot better than none.

  • What are the advantages of varying write speeds and burn speeds?

What are the advantages of varying write speeds and burn speeds?

The slower the speed, the fewer burn errors (or, in other words, you'll burn fewer "coasters"). I've always tried to burn at a slower speed, i.e. 2x - 4x. I'd rather wait a few minutes more and I've never had any burn errors.

  • Issues burning discs on iTunes/ error message about burn speed

I've never had problems burning discs on iTunes until today, I tried to burn one of my playlists on a Memorex CD-R.
    - The burn seemed to be going OK at first, but the drive started making an obnoxious, loud noise by the 4th song out of 16.
    - The progress bar in iTunes then said "burning disc, finalizing" even though the CD had not been finished.
    - The drive practically launches the CD out, causing it to drop, rather than ejecting half way and holding it like usual. An error message came up saying something along the lines of, "iTunes cannot burn this CD because the burn speed is too high for the CD drive or media. Lower the burn speed in the burning pane of preferences"
    - I tried it again without changing the burn speed (which I suppose was set to maximum) thinking it was something to do with the disc. The same thing happened the second time I tried to burn the disc. The reason I didn't change the burn speed when it asked me to was because I'd never been prompted about the burn speed and I've used the whole stack of these Memorex CD's without problems.
I am trying to figure out where the problem really lies - does this sound like an iTunes issue (which needs an update except that my system does as well), CD issue or a drive issue? Is there a more reasonable burn speed I should try next time?
Any help would be so appreciated, thank you!!

Try a different brand. Highly recommended:
    FUJI
    TDK
    Verbatim
Make sure the CDs are not dirty, smudged and/or scratched.

Your drive may need cleaning. Cleaning kits can be purchased from any store that sells CD/DVDs.
Repair permissions after each burning session.
