Matshita UJ-857 superdrive not recognized shown by mac????????

My macbook was working fine yesterday and then today I put a cd in and it accepted but it didnt show on desktop. It then would not let me eject the disk.
I checked in system profile and under ata and disc burning it now shows nothing?? Toast and itunes also can no longer detect a drive. I can hear the drive spinning when I power up. I took the laptop apart to check connections and everything seems fine.
Ive read a lot about the superdrive 2.1 update but I got this back in July or something and had no problems and since the drive is not even shown is system I guess its not this. Anybody any ideas???
Also i dont have applecare and am out of warranty so looking for a fix myself, do I just need to replace drive?? But why would it still spin and have power if its broken??
I have already tried resetting the smc and pram (think thats what they were called).
Thanks for any ideas

I have the same problem, it only started since I installed the latest security update and version of itunes. the first problem I encountered was that software I had installed would not open due to a shared library fault with quicktime. this was resolved by installing the latest version of quicktime.
now when I try and burn a CD it gives the message that the 'disc burner or software not found'. when I check in preferences the drive is listed under burning although it is not recognized in the system profiler.
The CD drive loads CD's though as I am able to play a video game that needs the disc inserted. any ideas on what I should do? do I have to reboot?

  • Ipod not recognized by any MAC computer

I have a 20gb IPOD 2nd generation which has worked fine until recent itunes and tiger software upgrade. Now Finder nor utilities (ipod updater) nor itunes will recognize the ipod when connected with firewire-- even in disc mode. Ipod is not recognized by any MAC computer (several tried in Apple store). I ran diagnostics and everything checks out on the ipod. Please help.

When I got a different charger later that night, my Ipod was charging but a message popped up saying "USB device not recognized".

    Hi Rick:
Which burner did you install? You may need to go to the manufacturer's website and see if there is any firmware that you need to install.

  • 10.3.9 to 10.4.11 update - Superdrive not recognized

I recently did an update from 10.3.9 to 10.4 then immediately the compilation to 10.4.11
As my HD was starting to top out, I put in a previously burned backup DVD to review my last backup. It was recognized and read OK. I then put in a blank DVD to backup some files and received an error message. The disc was not recognized and did not spin up. Subsequently the eject key does not work, and a review of System Profiler indicates "No burning device was found". I'm stumped. Any help is appreciated.

Hopefully it's not some basic part of the OS Missing, or the DVD part of the Player giving up.
What does System Profiler say about the drive now?

  • Mac DVD Superdrive not recognized in Encore CS5

I'm trying to burn a DVD using Encore CS5 on my new Mac Pro.  I already spoke with Apple to troubleshoot to see if it was the drive.  It was not the drive.  Therefore, there is a problem with Encore not recognizing the drive.  In the destination window in Encore, where it says "Recorder" in the build tab, it says "None Found".  Anyone know what the problem is?

Well, in the WINDOWS world some software will cause Encore to not be able to "see" a drive, so read the links below... I don't know if the same kind of thing happens in the MAC world
Things and Software to AVOID when authoring/burning a DVD

#2 here has WHY Explained http://forums.adobe.com/thread/607390
    Plus http://forums.adobe.com/thread/562941?tstart=0
Again in the Windows world, if the user can't or won't remove the offending software for some reason, the solution is to have Encore build the project to hard disk (folder or create an ISO) and then use 3rd party software to burn the folder or ISO to DVD
    Added
In fact, just go ahead and tell Encore to write the project to your hard drive and then use other software to write that output to a DVD... if that works, you know that "something" is getting in the way of Encore being able to communicate with your drive

  • External Superdrive not recognized

    Hi
My internal SuperDrive died like a month ago with a CD stucket on it, that cant be ejected. It is a mechanical problem. I took it to a support service store (I'm writing from Lima, Peru by the way) asking for a fix or replacement and I figured out the it was much cheaper to buy an external drive. So I bought a OWC Value Line External DVD Writer (link below).
While I was waiting for it to be delivered, I was bored of all the ugly noises that my internal drive was making so I search for a way to disable it and I found a hint (link below) suggesting to remove IODVDStorageFamily.kext file from /System/Library/Extenstions
Today I got my new external drive but it is not being recognized. I have restore the kext file on the Extensions folder, I have repaired permissions, reboot a couple of times, etc... but neither my old internal drive or the new external drive are being recognized. It is like they dosent exist.
    Any suggestions>?

    Ok, backup your data*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/backup.html
Dismount and disconnect any external data devices. If nothing works, just shut down and remove those devices.
Run the 10.6 installer. Boot from the CD if necessary by using the startup manager:
    http://www.info.apple.com/kbnum/n106178
Then run the 10.6.4 combo installer.
Then check Apple menu -> Software Update for possible updates, but install them from http://www.apple.com/downloads/
Finally repair permissions with Hard drive -> Applications -> Utilities -> Disk Utility.

  • HT2801 superdrive not recognized by MacBook Air

My MacBook Air will not recognize the superdrive, even though the drive is right side up and plugged into the USB port correctly. It has worked in the past with slightly older MacBook Air. Help?
    Thanks

Have you plugged the SuperDrive into the MacBook Air's USB port, then inserted a CD into the SuperDrive using a standard 120mm round disk as stated in the HT2801 article you attached above?

  • SuperDrive not recognizing OSX install CD?!?

So with all the other issues I've posted in the last hour or so (other threads) I figured I should run the install disk utilities. Since I bought this Mac secondhand, I do not have the original installation CDs (of course), but borrowed the Tiger CD from a friend to use. Well, the SuperDrive doesn't see it at all, and my second drive spins it for a second and ejects it back out. Both machines are PPCs, so the Intel vs. PPC CD issue shouldn't be it...
Any thoughts?? I'm getting desperate to be functional so I can get a project to the printer!!
Thanks to anyone who can help!!
Sorry--forgot to add both drives show up in the profile, and I've tried other CDs/DVDs with no problems.

As for drive #2, CD drives won't read DVDs, as you've discovered.
Superdrives that originally came with Quicksilvers are starting to reach the end of their lifespans. Not so many postings now but a few months ago the G4 board was full of postings about drives going bad. It wouldn't surprise me if this was the case with yours (unless you know it is newer). A new DVD drive costs about $30 (check www.mac-sales.com for examples) and takes about 15 minutes to replace. Alternatively you can try a laser cleaner disk, but those cost about the third of the cost of a new drive and I'd guess there are relatively few cases where they have saved somebody from having to purchase a replacement drive.
Drives can sometimes be picky about wha they will read and not read, though usually commercial disks are the least likely to give problems. DVDs are usually harder to read than CDs and more likely to start showing a drive that is going.
On a slim chance this relates to your situation, read [this thread|http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1336247&tstart=30]

  • New Superdrive not recognized

I upgraded my ibook from a combo to a superdrive. But the ibook still treats it as a combo drive. When I pit in a DVD the drive spits it back out. Did I miss something while I saw putting it in? Do I need to update some software? I even try using Toast to see if that would work, nope, I couldn't keep the disk in the slot long enough.
    ibook is a G4 1.25 running 10.4.10

But if the DVD part of the drive is bad, wouldn't you think that the ibook would still recognize that it is a DVD and not spit it out? I can hear something engage when I put a DVD in. It sounds like it is being read, and then it spits it out. Humm.

  • A1138 superdrive not recognized

My superdrive one day did not display a disc, and then would not eject the disc, and then disappeared from the ATA connection..

The least expensive and most useful diagnostic step is to buy a drive cleaning disk. They are usually US$5-15 at computer shops and home electronics stores. A dirty drive is not uncommon in notebooks with slot-loading drives. Dust and lint can occlude the lenses and make the drive appear dead.
If that does not help, you will need a new drive.
