Mavbook pro vs g5 question

thinking about selling my g5 and getting a macbook pro (probably a older model) I know this has been asked a million times, but will I run into signifigant problems using the macbook pro, or should I just stay with the g5 and up the ram. I am starting to feel the need to be mobile, but don't want to sacrifice performance, if I can get the macbook pro to work as fast as the g5, then I would be happy...also I am not interested in the newer model macbook pros, I want the firewire 400 ect...( also would 2 gigs of ram on a macbook be sufficient)

Well, I too have had no issues capturing from a DV camera daisy chained to my firewire drive. I have also captured regularly to my internal hard drive...the system drive...with only a few time it not working. The problem is that this doesn't work for everyone...in fact, it doesn't work for most people. it is 70/30...70% of the time it doesn't work, but 30% of the time it does. WIth numbers like that I never recommend that people work this way. Because more than once I have recommended that these were viable, and more than once I have had people report back yelling at me that they can't get it to work, and we never resolved that.
SO...if people want to try all this, they can. But more often than not, it doesn't work. I can capture DV on my computer all day long...but then I go to my wife's and she can't...only in iMovie. (and this was when I had the iBook G3 and she had the iBook G4!)
When people ask for recommendations, I recommend against it because of the more than possible issues. But, people can do what they want.

  • I'm looking to buy a new Macbook Pro, and have questions about the Applecare extended warranty?

I'm looking to buy a new Macbook Pro, and have questions about the Applecare extended warranty? I want to know if the 3 year extended warranty covers what damage. Like water damage, accidental damage, lost or stolen macbook, manufactory defects, or any other kind of damage, maybe be even cosmetic damage. Can anyone help me?

If you are talking about features of the MBP itself, as long as you are not looking at  the Retina models, then the memory you can upgrade yourself for a lot less than Apple charges, and that does not affect the warranty as Apple considers memory a user permitted upgrade.  Great sources are Crucial and OWC, both are Mac specialists and have on-line videos on how to do the install.
If the 15" is what you are looking at, a good upgrade is the 7200 rpm hard drive, gives a little better performance over the standard 5400 rpm drive.
The Hi Res screen is good if you do a lot of graphics work.
Comparing the 13" amd 15" you will notice the 15" has a second, discrete graphic processor...helps when you get into heavy duty videos, games, graphics...but keep in mind that kicking in the second processor uses a lot of power and will run the battery down faster.
If you are looking at the Retina models, then keep in mind there are no post-purchase upgrade options...you have to buy with everything you want at the start.
    Just some thoughts.

Provide the computer's firmware password. If you don't know what it is, contact the person you got the computer from or Apple.

  • X79-gd45 (8d) - Windows 7 Pro x64 installation questions

    Hi,
I have a MSI X79-GD45(8D) board with i7-3930k processor that I am trying to install Win 7 x64 Pro on.  I have a Sandisk Xtreme 240 SSD that I will be using as a system disk and 2X WD 1TB Black SATA 6GB/s (faex) drives that I will be using in a RAID 1 configuration for storing quickbooks and other data.  This machine will run a quickbooks enterprise server serving 10 people
I want to get the installation right from the get go so that I can start testing it asap.  Here are the steps that I will be taking to get this going.  Could you folks comment on it so that I can modify it as needed.  Thanks.
I have already installed the main board, 32GB RAM, Processor, fans etc and have setup the case.  It does post without issues so far.  Now for the installation, I have not partitioned the SSD (intend to make use of the full 240 GB) and leave the WD disks in a Raid 1 taking up the whole disk space (no partitions).
I am installing Win 7 x64 Pro on the SSD.  Here I have several questions:
    1. Do I set the SATA mode to RAID or should I just leave it at AHCI? I am assuming that this board recognizes drives in AHCI mode and installs Win 7.  I ask this question because I will be using two WD SATA drives in Raid 1 for storing data later.  Will the SATA mode be AHCI irrespective of that fact or should I change it to RAID after installing Win 7?
    2. Should I install Intel RSTe iaAHCI or iaStorA (ver RSTe_Win7_8_64bit_3.5.0.1101_F6) with the F6 option for the setup I mentioned.  I know the F6 installation in Win XP, but a little confused with Win 7.  I ask this because, I have read some discussions of Intel drivers vs Microsoft's version for AHCI.  Raid is confusing though.  Please explain in detail if you can.  Appreciated.
3 If I do F6 installation, do I install the AHCI/RAID drivers again after Win 7 is installed or does Windows properly load the F6 installation?
SSD, AHCI are all new to me with this build.  I have tried to educate myself, but have some of the confusions that I listed above.  Please explain how I can properly install it to the spec that I outlined above.
Your time, patience and help are all appreciated.  Thanks

1.) IF you are going to be using the mainboads raid controller for the data drive. You need to set the mode to raid for the os install as well. Unless you are going to use the extra chipset for the SSD. (Ports 7 &8) You won't be able to enable raid later w/o re-installing the os.
2.) I put the os(Install) on a usb flash drive, I also include all of the drivers on this flash drive and load the newest versions even if it detects the drive right out of the gate.
3.)Once inside  the OS, you would install the irst drivers there as well. (They are combined the raid bios / drivers and os drivers)
If this isn't going to be a very high I/o server, I probably wouln't bother with the SSD but since you have it you would just use it as a non-member drive of the raid. Have a fast drive for the os, isn't going to help the server all that much as most of the I/O will be on the data drive.
If this is going to be a heavily used server(high i/o) you may want to look at a raid 5 configuration for the os and data drives. As SSD's degrade over time and aren't really optimal for contant use like in a server. Raid 5 requires 3 drives minimum and is striping and mirroring so you get the best of both worlds.

However, the board based raid controller isn't really the best for this set up. I am fairly loyal to Adaptec Raid controllers although you need to contact Adaptec (or whoever) in regards to compatiblity as MSI doesn't test server compoents on thier desktop products.
This is the one I last used:

Also, look into the SAS drives as opposed to the sata drives. (if you use a raid card)

  • Treo Pro on-off question

Hello, concerning the Palm Treo Pro, is there a way to totally turn off the phone(without removing the battery)? (Need to save the data thats in the phone)  I know you can turn off the "phone" portion, but some apps I think are still running down the battery.  Tell me if its wrong, but when you put the device in airplane mode, it is still drawing down the battery? Thanks for any guidance. And, I have read the pdf manual. thanks

Palm devices never turn off to a "zero state" as far as battery use.  We rely on them for alarm functions, timing devices, etc.
If the device truly was allowed to go "dead", that would negate the functions listed above, and data loss could occur.
Since you have a WinMob device, be sure to stop any running programs not needed, (not just by clicking the X!)

  • Yoga 2 13 (Not Pro) Pre-Purchase Questions

Yesterday I looked at the Yoga 2 13 Ultrabook (non-pro version), 4 GB RAM, I5 processor, 500 GB hard drive at a big box store. I am seriously considering this, but wonder about fan noise (under high load conditions) and any other possible issues that this computer may have. I am sensitive to fan noise, because I work, watch or listen in quiet conditions. I asked the salesperson if they have a quiet place that I could take the computer and the answer was "NO".
Does anyone have experience with this (or similar Yoga 2) computer and could comment on the fan noise/sound and any other issues that you have noticed, i.e. Wifi performance or simultaneous use of Wifi and Bluetooth?
    Thank you in advance!

Hey! thanks for the response. my biggest concern is:
1.) Battery life in different scenarios. For my current laptop when I take notes for class I usually turn off all wireless devices, dim the screen to the lowest, and switch on power saver. I also turn off processes that aren't being used.  Can you comment on the battery life and how long it lasts to your knowledge in different scenarios?
I found this thread on the yoga 2 pro battery life (which i'm sure you'll be able to relate with regarding tips to increase battery life for your yoga
    https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Idea-Windows-based-Tablets-and/Yoga-2-Pro-Battery-Life/td-p/1272881/pag...
and I'm wondering what kind of battery life increases you could achieve by turning off  Lenovo's Smart Voice, Transitions, Picks, Motion Control, etc...
2.) i noticed that there are some concerns with the yoga 2 pro regarding wifi disconnection issues. have you experienced anything liek this?
3.) which hard drive did you end up choosing? I'm personally learning towards the hybrid hard drive but i'm worried that it will "lock up" everytime I move the laptop. of course i wouldn't be making sudden jerks or motions, but because it is a convertible, i'm wondering if switching between modes (tent, laptop, tablet) would trigger the hybrid HDD to lock up as a cautionary mechanism.
I checked out the laptop at best buy and i really really like it better than the yoga 2 pro, mostly because I like the smooth surface of the keyboard so much better than the rubbery texture. is there anything else you can comment on the laptop that you wish you could change / you knew before you bought it?
Wow that was a lot of questions. thanks for your help!

  • Soon-to-be Macbook Pro convert asks questions

    Hi there!
I have had Windows PCs in the past and i want some change. i want to do things more quicker & simplier. I have been researching for the past week or so a comparison on Apple Macs and the latest crop of Windows 7 laptops and i wanted to ask questions so i can convince myself if a Mac (in particular the Macbook Pro) is the one for me:
    1. Price
The Cheapest Macbook Pro is down for £999. with the same (or less) of the price for a Windows 7 laptop i can have a high-end laptop with a little more specs inside (disregarding wether you "need" the specs or not). Why buy a Mac?
    2. Camera
Does the FacetimeHD Camera allow for 3rd-party chat like Skype, Facebook video chat, Google talk or Yahoo Messenger?
    3. Bluetooth
With Bluetooth on-board will it allow sending or receiving files from a non-Apple device? and/or will it allow 3rd-party peripherals such as webcam, keyboard, mice or speakers to work (i.e. compatibility)?
    4. DLNA
The Macbook Pro doesn't seem to have DLNA on-board. what if i want to "throw" files to my TV via my PS3 will i need another Apple peripheral to do that?
    5. microSD card slot
Is the microSD card slot universal and is compatible with most if not all types?
    6. Keypad
It does say somthing as "multitouch". would that mean pinch-to-zoom photos/videos/websites? swiping as well?
    7. Software & Programmes
I like my Windows 7 laptop as i can download almost any WIndows-compatible softwares & programmes. things such as a browser (Firefox & Chrome), music management (3rd-party alternative to iTunes), anti-virus, etc. Will the Macbook Pro "in general" allow us to do that as well?
    8. Web Apps
Much i am not familiar with these web apps. All i know is they are just like apps on a smartphone. The Google Chromebook was built for the web and has loads of web apps on its Market. does Apple have a similar system? can i download Apple and also Google web apps on the MBPro?
    9. USB ports
The MBPro has USB ports but can i insert any 3rd-party external/portable hard drive in order to view files such as JPEG photos, MP3 files or AVI movies?
Do i need to download a 1st-party or 3rd-party software in order to view/play those said files?
    10. Uploading & Editing photos
Say i have a 32GB microSD card with photos or videos. i want to upload them to Facebook or Flicker or videos onto Youtube. i can do that on the Macbook Pro can i? do i need a 1st-party or 3rd-party software to do that?
I'm also into basic editing of photos like with Picassa.  is there a similar/equivalent product to edit a photo? (like cropping, sharpness, background effects, etc.) and after editing the photo can i easily save it on my Mac and attach as an email?
    11. Hard Drive
I read its an SSD-type. but can i easily partition the hard drive into equal or uneven parts? do i need a 1st-party or 3rd-pary software in order to do that? (the reason being so to organise my files properly and avoid "errors" in them)
    12. Fan Noise
I have a 1-year old HP Windows 7 laptop and after watching a movie for an hour the fan starts to become noisy and heats up after 2 hours. do i need to worry about fan noise or overheating with the MB Pro? does it have a fan or an exhaust?
    13. Warranty & Buying
What is the standard local UK/EU warranty and what does it cover? do i have a choice of an "extended" warranty? or can i just bring in my MB Pro for repairs only on an Apple store or a PC World/Currys store? would it be free if its in an Apple store?
What are the advantages of buying one at an Apple store? more perks/benefits/deals,etc.?
    14. Wallpapers
can i change the wallpaper easily on a MB Pro like in a Windows 7 laptop?
    15. Startup & Shutdown
I have heard both processes are quick and fast but is it just a one-touch/one-button thing? (unlike with Windows 7 you have to go to the symbol then...you know what i mean)
    16. Speakers & 3.5mm jack
Does a MB Pro have dual stereo speakers? do they have any other effects (or say equalizers) i can change or tweal to make it more louder or more surround in sound? can i connect any standard speakers on the standard 3.5mm headphione jack?
    17. Games
Now, lets face it. most games are on the home consoles then second is for the PC. i want to ask first: can i download games on iTunes and be able to play them on my MB Pro? (e.g. an iPad game) and say if i have  a Google account can i (in theory) download games off the Android Market to play on my MB Pro?
    18. Browsers
Safari might be better & faster than IE but i like mine Chrome. can i download ANY 3rd-party browsers (like Chrome or Firefox) on the MC Pro?
    19. Antivirus
    No need? and why?
    20. OS
Does the MB Pro come with the latest OS X and with back-up disc on the box?
    21. Updates
Like any PC or smartphone how often does Apple release updates for its Macbook range? and how do i update mine?
    That is all for now.

well..it is a long list but I will answer as many as I can.

I know for sure it works with Skype, not sure about the others as I do not use them.
    5. microSD card slot
Is the microSD card slot universal and is compatible with most if not all types?
Cards that conform to the SD 1.x, 2.x, and 3.x standards should work. The SD card slot can use cards that are Standard SD (Secure Digital) 4 MB to 2 GB, SDHC (Secure Digital High Capacity) 4 GB to 32 GB, and SDXC  (Secure Digital Extended Capacity) 4G B to 2 TB. MMC can also be used in this slot. MiniSD, MicroSD, and higher density formats like MiniSDHC and MicroSDHC can also work with the use of "passive" adapters that conform to the width and thickness specifications listed above.

    Yes. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3211

There are Mac compatible versions of Firefox and Chrome (I use both).  You don't need anti virus on a mac unless you also have Windows installed on a seperate partition.
    8. Web Apps
Much i am not familiar with these web apps. All i know is they are just like apps on a smartphone. The Google Chromebook was built for the web and has loads of web apps on its Market. does Apple have a similar system? can i download Apple and also Google web apps on the MBPro?
Apple has the App store where you can access free and paid apps.  I have used Google Chrome Apps on the Chrome homepage (anrgy birds).
    10. Uploading & Editing photos
Say i have a 32GB microSD card with photos or videos. i want to upload them to Facebook or Flicker or videos onto Youtube. i can do that on the Macbook Pro can i? do i need a 1st-party or 3rd-party software to do that?

Yes, Macs have a built in photo software that will do this.  It is called iPhoto
    11. Hard Drive
I read its an SSD-type. but can i easily partition the hard drive into equal or uneven parts? do i need a 1st-party or 3rd-pary software in order to do that? (the reason being so to organise my files properly and avoid "errors" in them)
Yes you can partition you hard drive as you like without any additional software
    12. Fan Noise
I have a 1-year old HP Windows 7 laptop and after watching a movie for an hour the fan starts to become noisy and heats up after 2 hours. do i need to worry about fan noise or overheating with the MB Pro? does it have a fan or an exhaust?
MacBooks tend to run hot when doing intense things, such as watching movies or using demanding programs.  The 13" models have 1 fan and the 15" and 17" models have 2 fans.
    14. Wallpapers
can i change the wallpaper easily on a MB Pro like in a Windows 7 laptop?
    Yes.
    15. Startup & Shutdown
I have heard both processes are quick and fast but is it just a one-touch/one-button thing? (unlike with Windows 7 you have to go to the symbol then...you know what i mean)
You can shut down the mac in a similar manner like on a PC or use a keyboard shortcut.
Every new mac comes with a 1 year hardware warranty and 90 days of phone support.  You can purchase an extended warranty which will provide a total of 3 years of hardware warranty and phone support.  It is called AppleCare.  Here is what it covers: http://images.apple.com/legal/warranty/docs/cpuwarranty.pdf
    16. Speakers & 3.5mm jack
Does a MB Pro have dual stereo speakers? do they have any other effects (or say equalizers) i can change or tweal to make it more louder or more surround in sound? can i connect any standard speakers on the standard 3.5mm headphione jack?
In my opinion, the speakers on the 13" MacBook Pro are sub par.  I can't say how they are on the other models.  They only have basic adjustments for the internal speakers.  You should be able to hook up any external speakers that fit in the jack.
You can download games from the App store and play them as long as your mac meets the games requirements.  For gaming, I would suggest a 15" or 17" model as they have 2 graphics cards, the 13" only has 1 graphics card.  Apps for iPads can not be played on mac computers, they are specific for iDevices or Macs. Not sure about the Android question.
    18. Browsers
Safari might be better & faster than IE but i like mine Chrome. can i download ANY 3rd-party browsers (like Chrome or Firefox) on the MC Pro?
I have Safari, Firefox, Opera, and Chrome on my mac.  Internet Explorer stopped support for macs in 2005.
    19. Antivirus
    No need? and why?
    Read this: http://www.reedcorner.net/guides/macvirus/
    20. OS
Does the MB Pro come with the latest OS X and with back-up disc on the box?
No.  It has a built in recovery partition.  Read this: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4718
    21. Updates
Like any PC or smartphone how often does Apple release updates for its Macbook range? and how do i update mine?
Yes, Macs have "software update". Updates are released as Apple determines they are necessary. You can chose to have it look for software updates in certain intervals or you can easily do it manually.

  • About to buy a Mac Pro, have quick question please.

    Hi all,
I am going to more than likely buy a Mac Pro 2.66 tonight or tomorrow, but I was wondering something in regards to graphics cars if any one could assist me.
I am planning to go with the ATI card and 2gigs of ram since I do some gaming on the side and plan to use bootcamp for that.
My question is that if I buy the machine in retail store, they do not credit the stock GeForce card and just add the ATI card in, so if I go that rout can both the ATI and Nvidia card both reside in the machine at the same time and be used in SLI mode?
EG: can I get the power of both cards or will I only be able to use the processing power of one card? If only one card then would I be better off configuring the machine online since they credit you the difference of the Nvidia card which saves roughly $150.00 off the order from doing it in a retail store?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am not worried about the $150.00, it would almost be worth it to spend the extra since the shipping time on the online configuration may end up costing almost the same unless I want to wait a few weeks for the machine.
Whats your thoughts on this? Is it worth it to buy in the store and use both cards or just buy online from apple and get the credit for the Nvidia card?
    Thanks in advance!

can both the ATI and Nvidia card both reside in the machine at the same time and be used in SLI mode
No… SLI requires two Nvidia SLI capable cards. In addition, SLI is not supported under Mac OS X although does work, apparently, under Windows and Boot Camp. ATi's comparable technology is CrossFire.
would I be better off configuring the machine online since they credit you the difference of the Nvidia card which saves roughly $150.00 off the order from doing it in a retail store?
Financially yes as the Nvidia card is ultimately useless to you. One consideration though is the CTO conditions of return, or lack there of, in case you receive a DOA. In the US, amongst other countries, CTo unit are not returnable even if they are DOA so you should check the terms of sale in the country store you would buy from.
    Whats your thoughts on this?
I, like many others, bought CTOs from the Apple Store so I don't think it's such a bad way to go. It also means you won't have any pressing need to open your new Mac Pro right away.
One thing you might want to consider though is to downgrade the standard 250GB hard drive to a 160GB drive and use the saving on a drive of your choosing. Apple tends to use OEM desktop drives that have unimpressive performance. The 160GB drive in my Mac Pro didn't even get turned on. It was a Seagate Barracuda 7200.9 if you're interested.

  • Acrobat Pro Extended feature questions

    Hi,
I am testing Adobe Acrobat Pro Extended to evaluate usability within the company I work for. During my testing, I have run across some questions about Pro Extended functionality. I would appreciate any information or suggestions you may have regarding these questions. Thanks in advance!
    1. Adobe 3D Reviewer in Pro Extended experiences a run time error and exits when attempting to delete a part (subassembly) from the model tree using the "delete" menu option on the right mouse context menu of the model tree item. This occurs in both .u3d files and .pdf files. Is this a known issue, limitation or is there a fix for attempting to delete parts from a model? (perhaps a problem on my installation?)
    2. I have used 3D comments on a 3D model and they are very useful since they are "anchored" to particular locations on the part/assembly being commented on. Can the comment text box itself be resized? Can the font size used for the 3D comment be resized? Once created, can 3D comments be edited in either Pro Extended or 3D Reviewer?
    3. The model tree in 3D models is useful for viewing/hiding parts of a 3D model. Do the plus signs (+) used to traverse the model tree have an "Expand All" option or must every + sign be clicked to traverse subassemblies (these can be numerous!). This may not be a supported feature. Is there any plan for it?
Thank you again and I appreciate your input.
    Jesse Perry

    Hi Jesse,
Here are some answers that should help in your evaluation:
    1) i believe you are still using a beta version. this bug has been fixed in the released version. you can find a trial version at the following location:
    http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobatproextended/tryout.html
    2) yes the 3D comment box can be resized by clicking in the upper left corner and dragging the mouse or moved to a different location by clicking in the lower right corner and dragging the mouse.
yes you can change the size/color of the 3D comment text by going to Edit>Preferences, clicking on Measuring (3D) and changing the settings: Measure Feedback Size, 3D Measuring Line Color
once created, you cannot edit the 3D comment text anymore.
    3) there is no Expand All option in Acrobat/Reader.

  • Macbook Pro - Folder w/Question Mark; Internet Recovery

    Hello everyone,
I have a 13" Macbook Pro that I purchased (new) in February 2013.
Yesterday I was working on it with an external mouse plugged into one USB, a bicycle light charger plugged into the other USB, and an external monitor connected in that port with the Apple connector, plus the power cord was plugged in. I had Word documents open, an Excel doc as well, plus iTunes running, and I had Chrome open as my browser. I had to quickly leave so unplugged all of them quickly, then closed the cover.
A few hours later when I opened the computer I had no cursor. I gave it a few minutes to "wake up" but nothing happened. I then turned the computer off with the power button. When it came back on I had a folder with a question mark and it was blinking.
In looking through the discussion forums, I tried holding down the Control button. This too me to Internet Recovery. Now I'm at the OS X Utilities and it has four options: Restore from Time Machine, Reinstall OS X, Get Help Online, or Disk Utility.
I back up the computer frequently with T.M. to an external HD, but I'd rather not erase the HD and start over.
I have seen some suggest resetting the PRAM when this issue occurs. As the computer was not dropped, I hope it was more of an overload issue when I unplugged so many things at once and shut it down.
I am definitely not a skilled computer fixer, so wanted to see if anyone with more knowledge could offer the best steps to take.
    Thank you!

The folder with question mark  means your firmware doesn't know what or where is your volume it's supposed to boot from normally.
1: Shutdown the machine by pressing and holding the power button.
2: Press and hold the option/alt key down. Boot the machine.
3: Startup Manager appears and hopefully your boot drive (along with RecoveryHD) appears, select your boot drive and click the arrow.
4: In System Preferences, set your statup disk again. Done.
    Folder with question mark issue
If this fails to work, then do reset the NVRAM and try the steps above again.
If your boot volume fails to appear, then your OS X is corrupt and is not recognized as a bootable option, but it can be fixed.
..Step by Step to fix your Mac
The worst thing is your boot drive is dead, lets hope you have backups of your data off the machine.
My computer is not working, is my personal data lost?

  • Apple Pro Training Series Question

I'm working through the apple pro series book, for those of you who are familiar with it... and have come across a questions that I cannot figure out in the book. In chapter 8 it discusses how when you add video to the timeline that includes audio they are linked together and thus selecting either video or audio will in turn select the other (audio for video and visa versa). However, this is not working for me, when I select either video or audio in the timeline it only selects that specific clip. Do I not have a setting correct or is there a difference in updates now?

Would have been nice if the book would have been able to explain that point as easily as you TYVM Actually I probably overlooked it and with a book of 500 pages its a bit like finding a needle in a haystack. Thanks again

  • Mac book pro flashing a question mark folder

What does it mean when my mac book pro is flashing a question mark folder and will not boot

There are four general causes of this issue:
    1. The computer's PRAM no longer contains a valid startup disk setting when there aren't any problems with the disk itself. This can be checked for by pressing the Option key and seeing if the drive appears.
    2. The internal drive's directory structure has become damaged. This requires usage of an alternate bootable system to perform the repair.
    3. Critical system files have been deleted. This requires usage of an alternate bootable system to reinstall them.
    4. The internal drive has died or become unplugged. This is the most likely case if the computer took a sharp impact or there are unusual sounds coming from the hard drive's location.

  • Purchasing a Macbook Pro - Lots of Questions

I currently am using a PC and Laptop. However, I am switching over soon due to the release of Vista, and don't want to switch until I know exactly what is included. Thus, I have listed my questions and system specs below.
    System Specs:
    MacBook Pro, 17-inch, 2.33GHz
    2.33GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    2GB 667 DDR2 SDRAM - 2x1GB
    SuperDrive 8x (DVD+R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)
    Accessory Kit
MacBook Pro 17-inch Glossy Widescreen Display
    Backlit Keyboard/Mac OS - U.S. English
    200GB Serial ATA Drive @ 4200 rpm
    Questions:
What is the estimated battery life when you purchase your mac new? (Obviously it wears down over time)
Does the mouse pad on a MacBook Pro support right and left clicking, or are macs still using the Alt click? This doesn't matter to much, but I would like to know.
What version of Mac OS X does my new mac come with if I purchase it today? (Tiger I assume, but I could be wrong)
Or do I need to purchase the Operating System Separately?
Does my new mac come with iLife, the full package, or just a trial or not all of iLife?
Do I need to purchase Microsoft Office 2004, or does iWork '06 pretty much come with a Word Processing program, a Excel-like program, a Presentation Program (Like PowerPoint), and an e-mail program?
If I do decide to purchase Office 2004 anyway, what is this "Entourage"?
Can I get Microsoft Outlook for my mac? How can I?
These are the questions I'm basing my switch on. Please answer in as much detail as possible.
Toshiba Satellite A105-S4164   Windows XP   Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005

Please answer in as much detail as possible.
Happy to help of course, but I wasn't sure if you realised that these are user to user discussions. The casual reader might find the tone of your post somewhat demanding.
    Anyway,
    a) Battery life. This is a very grey area on all laptops. Apple say UP TO 5.5 hours, but this is not very realistic.
Basically the battery has a capacity of 6700 mAh or so. If you turned the screen brightness right down to the bottom and minimised what you were doing you might use say 1220 mA per hour giving you 5.5 hours. In general use however and depending on screen brightness, hard drive activity etc you will use more than 1200mA. I can usually get 3-4.5 hours, but it is very dependent on what you are doing.
    b) The pad allows you to scroll using two fingers, tap once or use the button for left click and tap with two fingers for right click.
    c) It will come with OS X 10.4 - Tiger. 10.5 Leopard is due this Spring. OS 10.4 includes iLife - iphoto, iDVD, Garageband etc as well as iTunes
    http://www.apple.com/macosx/tiger/
    http://www.apple.com/ilife/
    d) iWork comes with Pages (Word Processor) and Keynote (Like Powerpoint) with some ability to calculate tables. Apple Mail is part of os OSX
    e) Entourage is like Outlook.
    f) Entourage is like Outlook
    Best of luck.

  • New in Premiere Pro CS5. Questions: markers, shortcuts, keyframes, and more!

Hi everyone, this is my first post. I'm an editor from Argentina, with background in Avid media Composer, but I'm switching to premiere pro cs5 for a new job. I was highly and happily surprised with it. But, there's still a couple of things I haven't quite got right, yet.
So, a couple of newbie questions... you'll save me a lot of time if you can answer some of them.
    Markers
1a. Can I use markers with different colors?
1b. Is there a way to select more than one marker and delete them at the same time? Of course, with out deleting all of them, just the ones I need.
1c. How can I set up a shortcut for going to next\previous clip marker in the timeline? In shortcuts, I go to Marker>Go go Clip marker> and select a shortcut, but in the timeline it goes nowhere. I have made this work for sequence markers in the timeline, and this shortcut also work for going next\previous marker on a clip in the source monitor.
1d. How can I extend a marker in the timeline? I know I can set the duration of the marker in the pop up menu... but if there a way to do it directly in the timeline?
    Razor Tool
    2. A simple one. After I've used the razor tool on a clip... how can I join the clip again?
    Track Select Tool
    3. Can the Track Select Tool, select all the clips to the LEFT, instead of all the clips to the right? In avid there's a Select Right command, which works as the track selector, but there's also a Select Left command, which does the same, but to the left.
    Audio Master Meters
4.Another simple one. Can I put this in a horizontal way? It'll fit perfectly in the tool bar then.
    Tab sizes
5.Can the tab size be modified? I have "Media browser", "Info", "History", "Effects" all docked... but the size of the panel is such that I can never see the four tabs at once, I have to drag the little bar at the top. Can I have the tabs be smaller so that I can see the four of them... as if they said "Media.." "inf.." "hist".."eff"... instead of wasting space with long tab names?
    Keyframes
    6. Is there a shortcut to add one? Where is it in the shorcut configuration? I know I can put them with the Pen Tool, I need a shortcut to replace the "add/remove keyframe" button on the tracks in the timeline.
6b.How can I snap the current time indicator to a shortcut in the timeline?
6c. Can I lazo multiple keyframes?
    Audio While Scrubbing
    7. In Preferences>Audio>Play Audio While Scrubbing I can select that on and off. How can I set a shortcut for that?
Well... that was A LOT! Sorry for so many questions. Hopefully they can help other new users.

    From the top:
1a. No; but you can set numbered markers, for both clips and the sequence.
1b. No; you can delete one or all.
1c. You have to select the clip in order to activate the command.
1d. You can only do this in the Marker dialog.
    2. No direct way to do this. Delete either the portion before or after the edit, and then extend the clip to fill the gap. Clunky, yes.
    3. No, the Track Select tool only operates to the right.
    4. Audio meters are vertical only.
    5. The tab size matches the title of the tab; no way to change this.
    6a. No keyframe shortcut.
6b. It doesn't work in the Timeline panel, but in the Effects Controls panel, you can hold down Shift to snap the CTI as you drag.
6c. You can lasso multiple keyframes in the Effects Controls panel with the standard selection tool, or you can use the Pen tool in the Timeline panel. Just be sure to start within the graphical representation of the clip.
    7. No, it's only a program preference.
Sorry that so many of them are negative! Be sure to file feature requests for anything that you'd like to see: Adobe Feature Request/Bug Report Form

  • Startup with Premiere Pro CS3 - few questions

    Hi,
I am totally newbie to video editing (and to ADOBE CS programs).
    To introduce, here's my setup.
New camcorder (Canon VIXIA HV30, HDV format, miniDV) - still in the owner manual for very basic things...
Premiere Pro CS3 (soon CS4 as entitled to upgrade)
    Vista x64 Home Premium
    Core 2 Duo 1.86 Ghz, 4GB RAM
    Firewire card
I just started to fool around with CS3 and with this camcorder, doing some tests (I use the mini DV HD tapes).
When I capture to Premiere, here are some of the annoying things happening :
    1) instead of viewing in real time what is happening, I get a multilingual screen saying that tape is being captured... (very very useful !!...)
    2) when I playback the scene, I see edges of things kind of blinking white - just the edges - some sort of what I would call 'distortion' but maybe it's not the right term... Is this just a matter of not having a high-end video card and then, I should not worry: the editing I would do would not appear on a DVD or a published video ? Or, am I doing something wrong ? (last but not least: does it have to do with the camera ? - although I do not see this when watching on the camera side viewer.)
    3) This camera can shoot 30p, 24p, hi-def (but HDV format - not AVCHD): what should be the setup to choose :
    - on the camera ?
    - when I launch Premiere and am prompted with a window to choose format?
Let's start with these basic questions...
    Thanks in advance,
    Rob

    Rob,
1.) You *may* have problems with CS3 and 64-bit OS. CS4 is optimized to work with (though it is still a 32-bit app) 64-bit OS. Things *should* be better. CS3 works beautifully with 64-bit OS for some. Others are not so lucky.
2.) With the Capture of HDV, you will not get real-time Capture preview - nature of the beast.
3.) Can you post a tiny amount of this footage, or a still cap to show what it looks like?
    Good luck,
    Hunt
