Maverick 10.9.5 + Xquartz 2.7.7 stopped reading ~/.Xresources

My new Xquartz installation, 2.7.7 (xorg-server 1.15.2), does not seem to work with my ~/.Xresources.  The previous version did work.  I do not set anything complicated in .Xresource: only -fg, -bg, -sb, -sl, -geometry for xterm and emacs.  Had the window manager or .xinitrc arrangement changed?

You'd be better off asking this over on the X11 users mailing list, one of the many mailing lists Apple maintains.

Startup your Mac while holding down the Command + R keys.
From there you should be able to access the built in utilities to repair the disk and restore OS X using OS X Recovery

Since upgrading to Mavericks my wireless keyboard keeps dropping. This stops me logging in! And I find I cannot reconnect the keyboard without switching the computer off. Can I fix this, or at least show the keyboard viewer to login with instead?

    This is getting annoying!
The computer goes to sleep. I can wake it by pressing a key on the wireless keyboard. It thinks for a while. It asks me for the password. I can't enter the password because during that time the keyboard has disconnected from the computer. I have no choice but to hard restart the computer.
Any and all ideas welcome. Thanks in advance.

  • After updating to Maverick, I need to install iMovie, iPhoto, but have read it has a lot of problems. Is there a fix?

After updating to Maverick, I have heard there are issues with Imovie 11. I want to know if I should buy it?

Thank you so very much for your reply and help!
I went back to the store where I purchased the Mac and I tell you that was an "experience"!. When I explained the overheating problem they informed me that they could send the Mac for service, they said "after all you do have a warrantee and Apple care".
I live in Sweden, but I´m American and as you mention I was expecting that they would immediately offer a new computer, but instead they want to send my 2 day old computer for service?? Not happy!!
Then when I mention that I could not see my external hard drive via Airport Extreme, the guy said that some HD are not able to be read by the Airport Extreme. That was kind of strange since I been using it to back up the G4 via firewire and never had a problem.
As it did not work with my HD as they had promised, I decided to return the Airport Extreme and buy a Time Machine. Then the salesmen informed me that he would buy the Airport Extreme back for a discount. BUY IT BACK and for a discount?? I had it for 2 days!! Never have heard such a thing in my life!
What was suppose to be a dream come true, is turning into a nightmare, I hate the store would love to just give them back the Mac and just order online from Apple. However I´m afraid they will want to buy it back for a "discount" I just spent 4000 dollars in that store, I get no help and instead they want to make more money out of me without a purchase. Sorry, just so upset!
I managed to fix the trash problem, just took "empty secure" away, according to what I have read, sometimes the fans take a while to "kick in" so I´m waiting for them to "kick in" and yes I will reinstall the system completely and hope that will fix the rest.
    Thanks again for the help!

  • HT204384 After I installed Os X Mavericks in my Macbook Pro, it stops readding the SD cards. I used diferent brands of cards and got all the updates for the Mac, but the problem wasn't solved.

    Hi!
I made the update to Os X Mavericks and my MacBook Pro 13' is having some isues; the SD slot card is not readding the cards. Sometimes, when I have a couples of hours using the lap, when I open the finder or any file, there are only the name of the files, but not images and I can open then even if I selected. Then I need to restar the lap to open them.

  • Upgraded to Mavericks, now mail crashes when I try to select/read an email.

Just installed Mavericks this morning and now my Mail (which has multiple accounts, gmai & .mac) crashes EVERY time I try to select an email to read/delete/manage.  I can send an email just fine, but the minute I go into a specific account and do anything CRASH! I restarted the system, I tried going into Mail preferences and removing all accounts and readding them. I tried deselecting the Mail function on each account then readding...nothing.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter the name of the crashed application or process in the Filter text field. Select the messages from the time of the last crash, if any. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
In the Console window, look under User Diagnostic Reports for crash reports related to the crashed process. The report name starts with the name of the process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report and post the entire contents — again, the text, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall, spin, or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.

  • Maverick 10.9.5 and Xquartz 2.7.7 fails ~/.Xclients

After updating my MacBook Air to Maverick 10.9.5 and Xquartz 2.7.7, the latter misbehaved: At first it was not reading ~/.Xresources.  This was because Xcode was simultaneously updated but needed license agreement.  After I fixed that ~/.Xresources seems properly read.  But ~/.Xclients is not executed.  I just like to have my ssh-agent started there, such as
    #!/bin/sh
    exec /usr/bin/ssh-agent /usr/X11R6/bin/quartz-wm
Has something changed and am I doing this wrong?

You might give VueScan a try. It should work with your scanner. There's a demo version that you can use initially.

  • Apple's DVI to Video adapter broken in Mavericks

    Good Day,
I've been monitoring this community forum as a guest only, because IMHO registering with anything over the Internet is equivalent to giving up a piece of your soul, but I could not find anything that would help my unique situation since upgrading to Mavericks. So here I am, and here is my situation.
I own a late 2007 15" Macbook Pro running 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo. It's a Vintage brand. The last known OS X I had on it was Lion, and it worked beautifully when I could output my video display using the DVI to composite/S-video adapter hooked up to an analog "tube" TV. I could watch DVDs, YouTube vids in expanded mode, I even figured out how to watch iTunes movies on the TV... at the sacrifice of my computer use. Basically, I needed Mavericks' independent display feature.
    But I couldn't have it.
After downloading Mavericks overnight and installing it the next day, My computer would not boot up. It stuck at the Apple logo screen with the loading gear continuously rotating upon itself until it became opaque (too involved too explain). After having service done, I isolated the problem to the adapter. Not only could it not boot up when plugged in, but it also didn't display when plugged in while powered up unless you hit the Mirror Display key. Further experimentations involved using DVI to DVI cables, DVI to VGA cables, and they worked fine.
I will not upgrade to a new HDTV or a new Macbook because everything I have still works, and I can't afford a new setup because jobless. At this point, I don't know what to do. Does Mavericks just plain not want to recognize my DVI port? Is there another way to hook this old laptop to an old TV with the equipment I already have?

Well, my proposed workaround, involving two adapters, does work, and indeed works quite well.
    1. Apple's DVI to VGA adapter, plugged into the Mac on one side, and on the other side:
    2. Male to male VGA gender changer, which plugs into:
    3. VideoSecu PC to TV converter with both S-video and composite video outputs, QVGA2TV 1L7, which costs about $20 on Amazon.
I use the S-video output, which in fact goes to an S-video balun, and from there via a Cat5 cable to another balun upstairs where my TV is. (I have a separate balun for digital audio into my DAC upstairs.) After some tweaking of the VideoSecu, I got a picture that is noticeably better than the one I got with the Mac DVI-to-Video adapter which I had been using before upgrading to Mountain Lion.
So, yes, the additional adapter adds to desk clutter, but heck, since Apple has never fixed this problem with Mountain Lion, it might never get around to fixing it with Mavericks, so this solves the problem here and now.

    Additional potential factors:
    - User folder has migrated through all versions of OSX, including OS X Beta.
    - Typically when I upgrade, I migrate Apps and user folder.
    Solutions tried:
    - Cleaning old kext files
    - Clean installation of OS
    - Removal of problematic fonts
    - Remove/Install Chrome
    - Clear out System and User Daemons

I've tried everything short of formatting the disk and reinstall a clean Mavericks.  Hopefully there will be a solution soon.

  • What are good specs to run OSX Mavericks?

I have been running OSX 10.6 snow leopard smoothly on my 2009 Unibody Macbook for a while now. I was wondering, if I have a 2.26 GHz intel core 2 duo and 4gb of 1067 MHz DDR3 memory would I still be able to run Mavericks smoothly? I saw Apple has apparently stopped patching 10.6 so I was thinking of upgrading but I don't want to if its going to make my Mac run slower.
Also, if I do upgrade the OS, do my files like music and pictures stay or do I need to back them up? Sorry if that's a stupid question this is my first mac and I have never upgraded the OS before.

Yes, you can run Mavericks just fine, but be aware that you may find older software may not run.
    Upgrading to Mavericks
You can upgrade to Mavericks from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mavericks can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for FREE.
    Upgrading to Mavericks
To upgrade to Mavericks you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Download Mavericks from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Mavericks is free. The file is quite large, over 5 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
        OS X Mavericks- System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mavericks
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 7,1 or later
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 5,1 or later
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 2,1 or later
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             7. Xserve (Early 2009) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.
         Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table - RoaringApps.
You should always backup before doing any OS update. I would also recommend:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.

  • Want to install Win 7 32-bit with Bootcamp on a 2009 iMac 24in running Mavericks. Do I have any good options?

I need to get Win 7 32 bit running on 2009 iMac 24-in, on a Bootcamp partition. Problem is I'm running Mavericks on that machine, and from everything I've read, Bootcamp 5 doesn't support 32-bit anything. Is it possible to do so without downgrading MacOS to an earlier version? I will if I have to. Would it be possible/advisable to boot to 10.6.8 from a removable drive and create the Bootcamp partition on the internal (10.9.x) drive? Any other options that can get me running Windows faster? Under Parallels it's just too slow.

As a possible alternative, Is it possible to only load Win 7 to the machine without bootcamp? Could I simply partition the drive for Windows and install? It's not that I want to run Win 7 -- MacOS is a far better solution for me. But for my bookkeeper, who will use this system extensively, MacOS is a foreign landscape and her software is win-based. I don't want to pay her to learn Mac-ese. And I don't want to buy a PC!
    Thoughts?

New Macs come pre-installed w/Mavericks.  Where/who did you purchase your comp from?
OS 10.8.5 is Mountain Lion.  OS 10.9 is Mavericks.  OS 10.7.x is Lion.
