Maverick installation problems

When I downloaded maverick it loaded the application then when to to the actual installing of maverick. It gets to 40 minutes then sais 'The OS X upgrade couldn't be started because the disk Macintosh HD is damaged an cannot be repaired.  I haven't  made a time machine and don't have any disks what so ever to do with the mac....  I have gone into utilities gone to Disk utility  clicked on macintosh hd and verified the disk, it says there's a problem but it won't let me repair the disk! I do need some of the stuff on the mac, all I really want to do is recover those files and all of my music then I will wipe the mac! Can anybody tell me what to do please!

I am sorry for your hassle. Greg had the same problem last night. The installer reported a disk problem, so Greg tried to run Disk Repair (not a good idea in the middle of an installation!), and then he got the same unrecoverable error message.
We called AppleCare, but their only advice was to erase the drive and Restore from a Time Machine Backup.
I gather that you do not have a recent back up?  In that case, I think you had better take your laptop to an Apple store and get some help. A technician will have to copy your drive contents so that it can be reloaded after Mavericks is installed. Call them first in case you need an appointment.
Greg had a backup, so he purged and restored his drive. The AppleCare tech walked him through it.
Just a reminder to everybody to run Disk Permissions and Disk Repair before installing a new operating system. The system installer should really advise this procedure before commencing installation.
Also be sure to turn off Time Machine so that it doesn't fire up in the middle of the installation process. That will cause an unrecoverable disk error for sure!
I am waiting awhile before downloading Mavericks with the hope that any current glitches are addressed.
Regards,
Paula

Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
    Boot to the Recovery HD:

Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Erase the hard drive:
      1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.

  • Mavericks installer stuck on disk select screen

    Hi all,
I just attempted to update to the new os x mavericks. However, I've been stuck on the disk select screen for about a half hour and no disks are popping up to select. Is there anything I can do here? I tried rebooting with the old OS X and it says it is not able to. I'm unsure where to go from here, especially not without risking any damage to files, etc.

What is the error message, please? Time Machine won't be an option until after OS X is reinstalled and you enter the Setup Assistant. You aren't there yet.
I want you to quit the installer if it's running. Then try rebooting as follows:
    Boot Using OPTION key:
      1. Restart the computer.
      2. Immediately after the chime press and hold down the
          "OPTION" key.
      3. Release the key when the boot manager appears.
      4. Select your normal startup disk.
      5. Click on the arrow button below the icon.
Let me know if you can still boot from your old system. If not, then you need to do a reinstall of Mavericks.

  • Battery Problems After Mavericks installation

So i have a MacBook Pro 8.1.  Before i installed mavericks (under mountain lion) i was getting about 4.5 hrs on a full charge (90% brightness).  After installing Mavericks i've had several problems.
Immediately, I received a "service battery" error.  I never had that problem before.
Battery life seems to be jumping all over the place.  One minute it will say that i have 30% left (and literally within a span of a min of two) it will drop to 17%. (with no noticeable app draining the battery - as confirmed by activity monitor).
The time remaining indicator takes about 5 min to indicate how much time left this is in contrast to booting in safe mode (where the indicator showed right away).
Battery life seems about the same (i.e. on a full charge i see it at about 4 hrs - but then it quickly drops 3.5 and than back up and then back down)
I did the following to see if i could "fix" the problem.
a complete battery cycle (calibration). - this seemed to get rid of the "service battery" indicator at least
    a PRAM reset (x2)
    an SMC reset (x2)
Disk / Permission verify and repair (no problems)
I booted off a 2nd internal HD which had a copy of Mountain Lion.  The above problems were nonexistent which leads me to believe that this problem is specific to Mavericks.
p.s. and No Spotlight (or any particular process) isn't consuming a large amount of energy.
All that being said, anyone have any suggestions?  At this point i can't trust how much time i really have on my battery.
For what it's worth i have installed a 3rd party SSD.  I noticed on a few different discussions that being a common thread with others having the same problem.

I have exactly the same problem with an MacBook Pro 8.2 for first time some days after a clean Mavericks installation.
I dont have a 2nd internal HD installed.

  • Serious problems after Mavericks installation with External Drive Lacie P9220.

Experiencing serious problems after Mavericks installation with External Drive Lacie P9220 1TB. Mac Finder totally locked!
I had to format the External hard drive with a Windows PC (fat32), then format again with my IMac (mac Journal.) and hopefully restored data from time machine backup.
So far so good but system looks unstable. Some software were not able to write on the hard drive. Some strange things happens. With Mountain Lion never had an even minor issue.
I read many discussion regarding problems with WD, just wondering if anyone had the same problems with Lacie and if there is any tip to solve the
    problem.
    Many thanks.
    Marco

Thanks very much for your reply.
Unfortunately I couldn't find a solution because the article refers to whom have configured the drive with included software and drivers that came with the drive.
This is not my case, I never used any third party soft ...only OS X disk utility ...

  • Is anyone have problems with Maverick installation?

I had problems with Maverick installation.  It moved slowly and I lost the ability to use my Finder.  It was riddled with bugs.  I am trying to figure out why.  I ended up erasing hard drive and reinstalling Mountian Lion.

No problems with Mavericks here ..
How much free storage space on your iMac?
Click your Apple menu  top left in your screen. From the drop down menu click About This Mac > More Info > Storage
Make sure there's at least 15% free disk space.
The v10.9 Mavericks file is a little over 5GB's and Mavericks does require a high speed broadband connection.

  • Everything keeps freezing/crashing after Mavericks installation on MacBook Pro

Everything keeps freezing/crashing after Mavericks installation on MacBook Pro.
It started with Photoshop, then Safari, and now the Kinect sensor.
Mavericks is the worse thing that happened to me I have a thesis project to work on!
    What can I do?
How can I remove Mavericks and go back to Mountain Lion?
    Thanks

    Hey StephSassine,
First, I would run through these steps:
Your computer’s startup disk may not have enough free disk space. To make disk space available, you can move files to another disk and then delete files you no longer need on the startup disk:
    Increase disk space
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH10677
If that doesn't work, you may need to repair your computer’s disk in Disk Utility:
Choose Apple menu > Software Update to make sure you have the latest version of Mac OS X.
Software updates sometimes change a file’s permissions to improve security, so updating your software can solve some permissions problems.
Open Disk Utility, in the Utilities folder in Launchpad.
Select the disk you want to check.
    Click First Aid.
Click Repair Disk Permissions to test and repair permissions.
via: Disk Utility 12.x: Repair disk permissions
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH5821
If that doesn't help resolve the issue, you can revert to a previous OS X version:
OS X Mavericks: Revert to a previous OS X version
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH14176
    Sincerely,
    Delgadoh

  • After Mavericks installation USB extern hd won't let the system shutdown

after the Mavericks installation my UBS extern hard drive won't let the system shutdown or restart.
If I unmount the USB HD and shutdown from apple menu or keyboard combination(control+eject key) then goes system down but without unmount shows just grey display with cursor and never go out. And the after the key combination control + eject then i can see the login field with restart, shutdown button then i can click shutdown button the system goes down. What do I have to do?

    Bump.
Lots of people are having this issue with no real good answers. I hope apple devs are reading the blogs and get us a fix for this quick. I had this problem after upgrading to mavericks, then I did a clean install to mavericks and still have the same issue. I already miss Steve.

  • Any trouble with Mavericks installation?

    Any trouble with Mavericks installation?

I too have upgraded four of my Macs to Mavericks and had no problems at all with any of them. One of the flaws of discussion groups is that one gets a skewed idea of the number of problems that users have because it is human nature to complain about something, whilst the majority of users who don't have a problem seldom bother to remark on this fact!
I, like most of the successful upgraders here, always follow a simple routine that involves firstly backing up, then (if upgrading multiple Macs) creating a bootable drive with the updater on, using Disk Utility or similar to repair permissions before upgrading the OS. I never use the Mac when upgrading and close all the programs and disconnect all external drives, save for the one with the updater on.
Following this routine means that I have never had a problem with an update since OS 7.5 on any of my 16 odd Macs. Of course, smugness always comes before a fall...!

  • How to remove a cancelled Mavericks installation from applications?

    Hi, > i'm very untechnical.
I started downloading Mavericks a while ago but changed my mind in the middle of the installation and pressed cancel since I'm afraid I have plugins on my computer that are not compatible with it. In my applications folder I can see the Mavericks and how long it had installed before I cancelled it, there's this little stripe.. I want to clean up a little and remove the mavericks download, afriad it takes up some diskspace or just ***** up for my apps on the computer, is this just something i created in my mind?  Anyway, if I delete it, I can always get it from apple support right..
When I try to delete the Mavericks from my application folder, it says "Some of the items you are moving are in use by another application and that it could cause some problems for my apps". Hm, is this an error message to ignore, or is there another way to get around this?
    Best,
    Leyla

    Leyla,
the partially downloaded Mavericks installer will only take up disk space; its mere presence won’t affect the apps on your computer.
Have you tried restarting your MacBook Pro, logging in, dragging the Mavericks installer to the Trash, and then emptying the Trash? Do you still get the “in use” message that way?

  • How do I confirm Mavericks installation success?

I'm not sure if my Mavericks installation on my MackBook Pro 13' (Mid-2012) OS X Version 10.9 laptop was completed correctly. Safari Version 7.0 (9537.71) is installed; however, I'm not sure if it had been updated with my Mavericks installation. It seems much slower and doesn't appear to have changed in appearance or options. So I'm wondering if something went worng with my installation? Is there a way to check the installation? If there is a problem with the install, what should I do about it?

My system won't start in "Safe Mode". I tried everything I could think of. I removed passwords, etc... I tried several more things and sniffed around. My system seems to be using too much memory. I found a disk in Disk Utiltiy. "APPLE HDD HTSS4750A9E384" It is listed first and then my Macintosh HD drive is beneath it and indented. The only disk listed in startup disks is my Macintosh HD. I noticed it before. I don't know when or why it appeared; however my computer was running without problems so I never did anything about it. My system is running very slow. I also noticed I have 2 "Garage Band" apps. since the install of Mavericks. The second one is an unfinished download. I don't know if I should delete the original and finish the download or finish the download and then see if there is still the old app in Finder and delete it then; however, the point is moot  because my downloads are so slow it won't finish. Come to think of it, Mavericks took MANY hours to download. I went to the site you recomended http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck_story and ran the check. Here are the results:

I hope this helps. My system keeps telling me I haven't got enough memory. I really don't have all that much on my system. It is partitioned but I don't think it has anymore space. Previously there were 2 Macintosh HD hard drives listed in Disk Utility. One was where the "Apple..." disk entery is now. I don't know if it has anything to do with it. I also installed xScan and it gives alerts that may be helpful. Let me know if you need them. Thanks for your (and everyone here) help.
