Maverick update slowing down computer

Hey,
I installed the Maverick update on my mac book pro (2012) about a week ago and since then the computer has felt pretty slow. Just clicking around or opening apps seem to be much slower then it used to be and I was wondering if anyone could help me out with what to do next. I havent tried reinstalling it or anything but after reading around a bit it seems like posting my Etresoft report is the first step so here is mine.

I have any older 2010 i Mac and was having the same problem. Lots of spinning beach balls everytime I opened somethng and especially when I logged onto my machine. I found a solution from OSXDaily. Here's the link, www.osxdaily.com/2013/11/13/fix-finder-slow-high-cpu-use-mac-os-x/. In fact, I think this solution may have come from the Apple Support Community originally. At any rate, it worked great. No more slow opens or beach balls when I log on.  I used this workaround with 10.9.1 and then had to again with 10.9.2, so any updates appear to return it to the original Mavericks bugginess. Hope this helps.

I have seen so much response about the Mountain Lion update slowing down computers.  I am updating from Mac OS x 10.6.8.  What can I do to ensure the upgrade will go fine?  Do I unplug my external hard drive before installing, or keep it plugged in?
Also, I have the 08 version of iWork. Will this cause problems for the update?  Can I update this AFTER I update the processor?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
There's no reason to think that Mountain Lion will slow down your Mac. Just make a backup of your data before upgrading with Time Machine > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1427
Also, check that your apps are compatible > http://www.roaringapps.com Upgrade them to a compatible version or delete them before upgrading.
The external drive won't make the OS X Mountain Lion installer fail, but it's better to unplug it during the upgrade.
iWork '08 is compatible with Mountain Lion. iWork '09 includes OS X Mountain Lion features and can be purchased at the Mac App Store.
To upgrade to OS X Mountain Lion, I recommend at least 4 GB of RAM. You can check how much memory you have in Apple menu > About this Mac

  • HT6058 Will this new update slow down my iphone 4 even more than the last update?

Will this new update slow down my iphone 4 even more than the last update?

Thats a hard question to answer.  The iPhone 4 has older technology than newer models which can cause the device to lag.  Depending on what data and settings you have on the device, it could run slower.  I would probably make sure to constantly close apps in multitasking and possible think about restoring the device as a new device.  Make sure to backup your data prior to the restore

  • Updates from HP agent ... always runs at start up and slows down computer

HP Pavilion a1222n, Win XP Home
When we first turn on the computer it is slowed down by "Updates from HP agent running"  checked through the task manager.
I would like to disable the automatic running of this and run it when I want to run HP Updates.  I read in another post to go to the Start > All programs> setting > select never which would allow you to chose when to run the HP update agent.  I can not seem to find it on this machine, the post I read was for another model.
    Thanks

    Hi Ron,
    Try the following.
Hold down the Windows key and press R.  Into the Run box, type msconfig and hit enter.  In the System Configuration window, select the Startup tab and remove the tick next to the HP Update agent.  Click Apply and Ok to save the change and then restart the PC for this change to take effect.

  • Upgrade to Yosemite Slowed down computer substantially

    Hi All,
I recently upgraded my MBP (mid-2009) to Yosemite.    I noticed that people have been using EtreCheck to determine what is the root cause of these Yosemite upgrade slowdowns.   My issue is that I am having difficulty interpreting the output file.   Any help and recommendations would be appreciated.

  • Why is the new ITune update slowing down my pc.

I recently updated ITunes...It now comes with a helper exe.  Why did this change...It has slowed down my pc something terrible... I am running Microsoft Windows 7 64 bit..and never had this problem before...
Seems I need the helper exe to access ITunes now...I do not like updates that decide what runs or doesn't run....Is there a solution to this. I have one apple product it is an IPad mini...If it wasn't for the fact that I have purchased music and apps.  It would end up in the garbage...That is how upset I am...
If this is a way for Apple to make me want to buy their products it will not work...
I have absolutely no problem with the ITune store on my IPad...just on on my desktop.

    Hi theresa62,
The resource below explains the processes that are involved with the iTunes software installed with Windows 7.  It's possible to use your iPad mini without the corresponding iTunes software on your Windows computer .... but it would limit what you can do with it.  You can't sync your iPad with your computer, use iCloud services, etc. without the software.  The choice is totally up to you.

iTunes for Windows: Background processes installed on Windows XP, Vista, and 7
iTunes for Windows (XP, Vista, and 7) installs some processes that run in the background. Below is a brief explanation of what each process does.
    Process
    What it does
    AppleMobileBackup.exe
Backs up the data on your iPhone or iPod touch
    AppleMobileDeviceHelper.exe
Listens for commands to help iTunes communicate with devices
    AppleMobileDeviceService.exe
Allows iTunes to recognize iPhone and iPod touch
    AppleMobileSync.exe
Synchronizes iPhone or iPod touch data with your computer
    distnoted.exe
Allows iTunes to sync with iPhone and iPod touch
    iPodService.exe
    Allows iTunes to access devices.
    iTunesHelper.exe
"Listens" for commands to help iTunes communicate with devices (such as iPod).
    iTunesPhotoProcessor.exe
Transcodes photos and artwork for devices
    MDCrashReportTool.exe
Extracts log reports from the device and submits them to Apple (if selected)
    mDNSResponder.exe
Allows iTunes to discover services on the local network (music sharing, Apple TV, AirTunes). Also known as Bonjour for Windows.
    SyncServer.exe
    Coordinates the synchronization processes
    qttask.exe
Provides a QuickTime icon in the Notification area (system tray) of the Windows Task bar. This process might or might not appear depending on your configuration of QuickTime and whether the QuickTime icon is enabled in the Notification area.
    Processes depending upon Sync configuration
    What it does
    dotmacsyncclient.exe*
    Syncs the device with iCloud
    com.google.ContactSync.exe*
    Google contact syncing
    com.apple.IE.client.exe
Syncs the device with Internet Explorer
    com.apple.Outlook.client.exe
    Syncs the device with Outlook
    com.apple.Safari.client.exe
    Syncs the device with Safari
    com.apple.WindowsContacts.client.exe
Syncs the device with Windows Address Book / Windows Contacts
    com.apple.WindowsMail.client.exe
    Syncs with Windows Mail
    com.yahoo.go.sync.client.exe*
    Syncs with Yahoo
*These processes will require internet access to sync. You must allow these processes internet access through your firewall in order to complete their functions. For more details, see iTunes for Windows: Troubleshooting security software issues.
Note: Depending on your configuration, some of these background processes may not appear. iTunes can start other background processes to perform various tasks like syncing and diagnostics. New functions may be added to these background processes in the future. Please note that you should not disable these processes even when iTunes is not open on the computer.

  • Any security update slow-down problem occuring ???

    hi all,
My macbk has slowed to a crawl on the net. connecting from one site to another takes up to 20 seconds. I've done permissions / onyx/ scripts/ reset safari & camino /cleared browser caches and each time it speeds up a bit but within a few minutes online it's slow again. hangs up initially at "looking for..." in the bottom bar and shows highlighted bar hung right before "www". OR at the "go to" / "contacting" stage at the same WWW
The only thing I can think that I did at about the time it began slowing down was , using software update (which I rarely use- normally download directly from the apple site, but got momentarily lazy!).
My Techtool pro is 4.2.1 and won't run on my intel apparently - or so it says in the dialogue box and when I try to download and install the incremental update it says it can't find where to install. so I am stuck with out it at the moment.
If it weren't so rare I would think I had a WORM. but that IS rare on a mac I think.
so thinking about possible linked problems with that security update.
anyone heard of any problems ?
I do have applecare, so if all else fails I can call them I guess

    You're Welcome Sue!
I forgot about some of the cool options in the Safari View contextual menu, so thanks to your previous post, I took a look.
I haven't been exploring my system enough lately!
And Thank You, for extending the courtesy, of awarding in  Discussions, as this is not a requirement, nor mandatory, but is much appreciated!

  • Chart update slows down...

    Hello,
I've got a transparent picture control over a chart. The picture is
used to place a horizontal line across the chart using a mouse click.
It all works fine until the chart is filled and it has to start
scrolling. Then it really slows down.
If I move the picture so that it isn't overlapping the chart then the
chart runs at a good speed again.
Is there anyway of speeding things up? Will the chart history length
    affect this?
    Regards,
    Adrian.
PS - My PC is a 600MHz Athlon.

Charts, like most other controls have more work to do when overlapped.
An overlapped chart can redraw just the small area where the new data is
drawn until it fills up and starts scrolling. At that point, the chart
must redraw the entire chart. One thing you can do is change the update
mode from strip chart to either scope chart or sweep chart. You can
also make the overlay be optional, so that
    it doesn't pay the overlap
price except when it needs to.

  • Mountain lion update slowed down my macbook pro

    hey guys,
I just updated to mountain lion
however, after the installation, my macbook pro has been noticably slow.
slow booting, slow when operating installed programs, chrome/safari got slowed down as well.
Also it freezes for couple of seconds and i was wondering why.
If any of u r experiencing same problems or know how to fix it please kindly let me know!
    Thank you!

Have tried everything possible, repairing permissions etc to no avail.
You haven't tried everything possible or you would have a solution.  If you tried the most extreme possible solution (erasing the hard drive, then reinstalling the system and nothing else) and still had the same problems, you would have discovered that you almost certainly have a hardware problem.  For some solutions that you haven't tried yet, I'll refer you to the same two links I referred sylee48 to.
As for that article, that's an extremely unprofessional piece of writing.  They publish - as if they were fact - the conclusions of untrained, non-technical users who do not have the necessary expertise to make such conclusions.  And they concluded that these were bugs that Apple should be working on.
In fact, this may be one of the smoothest upgrades I've seen in a while.  (Boy-oh-boy, you should have seen the screaming here for the Snow Leopard and Lion upgrades!  It's positively peaceful in this forum compared to that.)

if you don't want to program in java dont, noone is forcing you. when java runs it will load up a vm and a library for it. that's the way it is. it may take a little longer then the equiv native app, but that's because the native app's vm and so on is ALREADY loaded (it's the OS).
in summary: deal with it. it's not that bad. there are some very good examples of java desktop apps that work well; azereus being one, i'm sure there are others.

  • Will the iPhone 6.1.3 update slow down my iPhone 4?

I've been a little reluctant to update my iPhone 4 from ios 5.0.1 to 6.1.3 because I'm worried that it will severely slow down my phone.  I had this problem happen to me before with my iPhone 3.  Every time I updated the softwear, my phone got slower and slower.  I like some of the new features of the recent updates to the iPhone softwear, but I'm just afraid that it will make the phone slower than it already is.
I'd love to get the new iPhone 5, but I recently lost my job and just can't afford it.
    Thanks, Paul

Sorry, but I disagree with your post. I have 4 iPhones in my household and none of them have poor battery life and the wifi is working on all 4 of the, so that shoots your theory out of the water, unless I don't count as part of "everyone else".

  • Acrord32 slows down computer, graps cpu time.

Acrord32 slows computer, grabs cpu time.
Win XP Pro SP3, Acrobat 11.0.01.36.
(If this is not the correct forum, kindly direct me to where it should be re-posted.)
Every time the cursor floats over a .pdf file in any file manager, acrord32 slows down the computer, hangs the cursor, takes cpu time and makes scrolling jerky. The more .pdf’s in a list, the more jerky as acrord32 opens and closes, again and again. The cursor is not pausing over a .pdf file, no .pdf is being selected, Acrobat is not running. How can this be stopped? I DO NOT have Reader installed.
Acrotray and Acrord32 are NOT loaded in msconfig. They do not appear in task manager UNTIL the cursor floats over a .pdf. After a second or two, acrord32 disappears out of task manager. However, it is obviously lurking because it comes back next time the mouse encounters a .pdf.
    Questions:
    1) how to stop this behavior?
    2) how do these exe/dll’s get loaded when they are not marked to start?
    3) where does acrord32 “lurk,” and how can it be ferreted out?
    This is very annoying.

AcroRd32 is related to Reader, so not sure why you have it if you do not have Reader installed. If no Acrobat product is running, the only process that should be running should be AcroTray that provides the process when printing to the Adobe PDF printer and should not be disabled. Be sure you check the processes list and not the applications. AcroRd32 runs in the background processes when it is running.
I checked on both AA9 and AA XI systems with Windows 7. Neither one had AcroRd32 running.  My guess is you have it installed, even if it does not appear to be.

  • 10.4.10 update slows down SMB traffic?

    Hi all!
This is my first mac-post. Forgive my mac-related ignorance, I'm trying to learn.. It's kind of an old-dog-new-tricks deal..
Anyway, I've been researching a clients recent complaints that reading and writing files to and from their Windows Small Business Server 2003 server suddenly (a few days ago) slowed down immensely - to the point where it's almost unusable. They use VectorWorks for CAD and loading/saving a 20MB file will take several minutes on their 100Mbit/s network! Also playing video from the server is choppy.
I've been researching the problem, and I've tested and checked out the normal networking problems like cabling, switches, server NIC, speed/duplex settings etc.. I've also tried various solutions to slow SMB traffic from other Mac-forums, like disabling TCP/IP v6 and disabling ACK delay on the macs, seeing absolutely NO improvements.
I believe, however, that I've isolated the problem to the recent 10.4.10 update:
    * Their 1 Macbook with the 10.4.10 update has this problem.
    * Their 4 iMacs with the 10.4.10 update has this problem.
    * Their 1 iMac still on 10.4.9 DOES NOT have this problem.
    * Their 1 Mac Pro with the 10.4.10 update DOES NOT have this problem.
So, it looks to me like the 10.4.10 breaks "something" on the "little" Macs while the Mac Pro seems unaffected.
What can I do to rectify this problem? My client complains about lost efficiency and I'm at a loss about what to do next. Can anyone help me out?

    {quote:title=BDAqua wrote:}
    Not exactly clear where we are right now, but did Applejack report any fixins?{quote}
Ok, I'll try to summarize todays findings...
    * AppleJack was run in interactive mode, ran all five tests, found nothing (as far as I could see)
    * Rebooted twice, still no better.
    * AppleJack was run in the AUTO mode. Same result.
    * I tested the transfer speed with smbget, it starts at 100kbps and rises to about 700kbps as the transfer progresses. On a 100MB Ethernet, I'd expect to see at least 1MB to about 10MB.
    * Then I downloaded Pacifist and installed everything that matched a search for "smbfs" in the install files, which are OS X 10.4.3 (or was it .7?? argh.. I forget, check tomorrow).
    * I was now out of luck, as the previously created aliases failed and a connection to the server through Finder was impossible. Smbget still works though!
    * The kextstat -b com.apple.filesystems.smbfs command now only displays infoheader, but no info.
    * Now, I'm looking at a backup of a few files and a complete reinstall of the Macbook to see if that does the trick.
My client hasn't seen the bill for these hours of troubleshooting yet, but I have a feeling I'll have to throw in the towel real soon. Ooops, I sent him the link for this thread, maybe he's watching!?

I started to download the Mavericks update, and it's taken over 10 hours (and still downloading). Is that normal?

    Try running the combo update.
