Maverick upgrade noise issue

Can anyone tell me why after Maverick OSX upgrade, my Mac mini hard disk spins relentlessly, even before I have login? i.e at the dashboard stage it is already revving up. In addition, my dual monitor display is now only capable of displaying only from the HDMI port, the Thunderbolt bolt doesn't seem to work anymore?

Having problems with wireless mouse since upgrading to Mavericks I few days ago. Sometimes I can't click on links.  It goes all over the place on its on. I've even had Yahoo messagesI've type vanish before I can send them.. Any suggestions?

    Hi csp256,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
Try these steps first if you are experiencing unexpected behavior with your mouse cursor:
Mouse does not track as expected (jittery, jumpy, slow, fast).
The Apple Wireless Mouse can be used on most smooth surfaces, however if tracking issues occur try these options:
Choose System Preferences from the Apple () menu, then choose Mouse from the View menu. Set the Tracking slider to adjust how fast the pointer moves as you move the mouse.
Try using a different surface to see if the tracking improves.
Turn the mouse over and inspect the sensor window. Use compressed air to gently clean the sensor window if dust or debris is present.
If multiple Bluetooth wireless devices are in use nearby, try turning them off one at a time to see if the issue improves. Bandwidth intensive devices could affect tracking.

  • Permissions issue after Mavericks upgrade

I have just updated an early 2008 IMac with OSX Mavericks.
All software running fine, but I noticed occassionally I was getting an authentication prompt on some files, didn't follow, but simply authenticated as and when I need to, I assumed it was when I moved files from my Mac Pro to my Imac.
Having run the upgrade however, I get an error message to contact the vendor (Battlefront) as my copy of Combat Mission Battle for Normandy has lost its license.
After the upgrade I had also purchased from the same vendor Combat Mission Fortress Italy. Having downloaded this and gone to run after copying to applications, this software gives me an error message saying unknown developer so I have got no where near installing a license.
Having contacted the vendor and tried to get a work around, I am now getting the message it is you Mac not our software, despite the fact that all my other software is working fine (and the fact that the Combat Mission Battle for Normandy game worked fine until the upgrade).
I do feel some sympathy for them, I do think the Mac has some sort of permission issue - I also probably compounded this by deleting a user which I did not recognise called 'wheel' which I suspect now is some form of default permisison.
Anyone got any ideas, how do I 'reset' the system - I have tried fixing the permissions through disk utility.
My vendor got me to run a sudo command through Terminal, but I got the message...
sudo: unable to stat /etc/sudoers: Permission denied
sudo: no valid sudoers sources found, quitting

Before my Mavericks upgrade on my Mac Pro, no problems ever (use my Mac 4-8 hours a day) using my Bose Companion 5 USB connected speakers. I've tried shutting the Mac down and plugging the Bose USB cable into another open USB port = no joy and other combinations. I tested the same Bose Companion 5 USB speakers on two other laptops with NO issues (ouch...they were running Windows 7) I have deleted the two .plist files, did the CMD+OPT+P+R reset, etc... = no change. Looked into Midi Audio Setup and did not see anything in there to change even though I tried a couple of things and no avail (there was no Garageband setting/entry).
I still get a solid "BEEEEEEEEP" sound every 20+ seconds, when the sounds tries to toggle, by itself, between the Bose USB Audio device and the Internal Speakers.

  • Speaker issue after Mavericks Upgrade

I recently upgraded to Mavericks on my Mac Pro (mid 2010 ver.)
Now when I try to listen to Pandora, iTunes, or anything that pushes sound thru the O/S, the sound "jumps" between my Bose 5 companion computer speakers (USB) and the internal Mac Pro speakers.
Additionally, when I go to Preferences-----Sound, you can literally see the O/S jumping back and forth to these two rows  "Built In   Internal Speakers" and "Bose USB Audio    USB". More specifically, you will hear the music thru the Bose speakers and then about every 20 seconds (sometimes it goes for over a minutes) it will "beeeeeeep" and then jump to the Mac Pro internal speakers.
I tried deleting the two .plist files as previous mentioned in past threads with no luck. Before I upgraded to Mavericks I never had ANY sound/speaker issues what so ever.
    Any suggestions? Thank you

  • IMovie Issue after Mavericks upgrade

I upgraded my iMac 2009 to Mavericks today. I updated all the user accounts for format changes to Mail, iPhoto and iMovie. What a pain. I don't recall this being an issue before (I was running Lion) but iMovie now only lets one user run iMovie at a time. A dialog pops up stating "You can't open the application "iMove.app" because someone else is using it.  Ask the other user to quit the application, and then try again."  Was this always like this? It's kind of funny to have an app that behaves like this. Does anyone know what wrong? Operator or System error? Thanks.

  • Color Printing issue on Canon MP600 Printer and Mavericks upgrade

I realize that some people have been having problems scanning with the new upgrade on their printer, however, I am have trouble printing in color with the new Mavericks upgrade. Black and white is fine, but if there is any logo or color fonts, they are distorted. How do I go about fixing this?

I too was having the same issue where I was unable to print in color on my MP600 with Mavericks. It printed incorrect font, colors and distorted the size and placement on page .  I followed the above instructions to download the MP600R via the Canon UK website and it has solved my problem.
If anyone is as computer illiterate as I seem to be: After downloading the MP600R driver and installing it, I went to System Preferences>Printers and Scanners> delete the printer currently listed>add a new printer and select the MP600R from the list of software to choose.
I have yet to delete any software/driver files related to the old printer, so I was able to correct the problem simply by downloading the new driver, deleting the current printer, and adding a "new" printer selecting the MP600R.
So happy it is now resolved as this has been driving me crazy for months!

  • All gmail accounts offline following a 10.9.5 mavericks upgrade today. None of the obvious things fix the issue. Help please. Accounts are ok via browser, ipad and snartphone.

How to bring gmail accounts back on line following OSX 10.9.5 mavericks upgrade which has taken all offline.

SSL, make sure your date and time is correct.
Run the 10.9.5 combo update... OS X Mavericks 10.9.5 Update (Combo)
Your issue is very hard to troubleshoot because 10.9.5 and Yosemite preview work fine with my gmail accounts on my Mac.

  • Mail Issues since maverick upgrade

Since upgrading to Mavericks I have been having the several issues with Mail. The are as follows:
Scrolling is available intermittently or not working at all (using Magic Mouse)
Problem: Scrolling works for a while when using mail, then stops working. I have to click on the side bar to go up and down on all scroll screction within mail. This issue only resolves when quitting Mail, and sometimes will only work again when shutting down and restarting my iMac.
Scrolling on folders withing the main body of my iMac also stop working from time to time and only resolves when force quitting finder, or restarting my mac (or somethime shutting down and restarting the mac).
Email address pull down menu does not close down
Problem: When typing an new email and selecting an outgoing address the pull down menu appears, but once an address is chosen using the mouse curser the pull down menu remains on screen and does not close down automatically. I can not close it with teh mouse curser and have to use the keyboard (return or tab buttins) to close down the drop down address menu. It used to close down prior to Maverick upgrade. The pull down menu remains on screen blocking access to the CC and Subject sections.
Saving Mail attachments to desktop folders does not work.
Problem: Saving attachements from mail does not work at all using the drop down menu within mail. The process of using the save attachments menu within mail seems to work, but when you go to the folder after using this process, the item or items have not been saved.
Click and drag is the only way to move attahcements from mail to desktop folders now.
Mail will not quit automatically when shutting down Imac
Problem: When shutting down my iMac, mail will no longer quit automatically and prevents the shut down. Once shut down has been selected, Mail will no longer quit and I have to use Force Quite to shut it down.
Would welcome suggestions on how to resolve these issue.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models.  The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

  • Bootcamp Issues after Mavericks Upgrade

I was happily running ML, Win 7 and VMware Fusion on a MBP Mid 2010 then decided to upgrade to Mavericks. After sucessfully performing the upgrade and updating Fusion to the latest version I found that the Win 7 VM would throw an "operation failed on rdisk0s4 " after around 10 minutes. I can boot into Win 7 and it runs fine but won't in the VM. I thought it may be a Fusion problem so I installed Parallels and it has the same issue. I'm assuming the Mavericks upgrade did something to the Bootcamp partition. Disk Utility shows the Bootcamp partition and everything looks ok. I did notice that in Disk Utility the partition is named Bootcamp but after the VM failure it is named rdisk0s4.
Could the partition name be part of the issue here? i've seen some issues with others losing the Bootcamp partition from the boot menu after a Mavericks upgrade but not this problem.
I have a Winclone backup of the Win 7 partition but it's not that recent and now Winclone fails on the creation of a clone process. Somehow I don't think restoring a Winclone backup is going to sort this out. I'd appreciate some expert opinions on this problem.
    Steve

The size of the MS Data should be roughly the sum of the 'gap' (107,422,440) and GPT 4 (86,753,280), which is roughly 90+ GB. Your current disk0s4 is about 45GB. In Testdisk you should skip the smaller 6174 and 28800 or similar sized entries.

  • Massive Battery Drain After Mavericks Upgrade on 11" 2013 MacBook Air?

I got my Air about month before Mavericks came out and the battery life was amazing on it. I was easily getting 14-10 hours of life using Chrome and Air Mail App, along with Power Point and MS Word. After the upgrade to Mavericks, it was slow but I started to notice that my battery life during classes was draining so much faster than before and I had not added anything 3rd party software, just the upgrade. I am now down to about 3.5 - 4.5 hours of battery life doing about the same things as before the upgrade. I did a couple of apps and I added (Sims 3 game). However, I have yet to touch it because of the diminished battery life.
I have included a copy of my Etrecheck, can somone take a look and let me know if you think I need to clean something off?
I did do the SMC reset and that seemed to to give a little juice (like putting new tire on your car but still not where it was before the Mavericks upgrade) as I am up to about 6 hours of battery life after the SMC reset.

    Hi Lex,
Not sure why but I had a hard time finding all of the related files to get rid of Origin. But I think I finally got them. I just uninstalled Flash and Chrome. I don't like Safari but all well. I suppose I can deal with it it until Apple fixes this battery issue and then maybe I can go back to Chrome. Safari isn't too happy with certain websites, under the Preferences/Security there is an error message that reads "Google Safe Browsing Service Is Not Available. Has not been updated in 8 days."
Haven't noticed a change in battery since doing all of this so let me know if it will take a couple of days to reset. Or if you see anything else that I can do to help. Thank!

  • Display Profile No Longer recognized in Final Cut Pro After Mavericks Upgrade

I have a 27" 3.4 GHz I7 imac. and an Apple 30" Cinema Display  After the Mavericks upgrade my viewer window suddenly has completely crushed blacks and is extremely dark.  Projects previously exported out look perfect in both Quicktime and Preview. I can export a project and it looks fine, just terrible in FCP.  It seems that it is related to my calibrated display profiles.  FCP will not recognize them now under Mavericks and worked fine with Lion.  Switching to the generic imac or cinema display profile will hold after the change and make the viewer look normal.  I downloaded FCP 10.1 didn't fix it.  Any ideas why this is happening now?

After researching this quite a bit and seeing this Very very dark video in FCP X viewer. I was able to fix the problem by building a matrix based profile. This problem dated back to the first FCP release for some, but I never experienced it until updating to Mavericks.  It seems that Mavericks is the problem, since nothing changed with FCP. I read somewhere else that another color calibration software tool was having an issue that Maverick's broke LUT (Look Up Table's}  I'm surprised that I am not seeing more photographer's/videographers with this issue. It may just be that those that are using calibration don't have softaware that builds LUT profiles by default.

I can't say personally since I never used AW, but see if these articles help:

    http://www.cultofmac.com/248546/convert-system-os-9-appleworks-6-files-to-os-x-p ages-files-os-x-tips/
I suggest that you clone your current drive with 10.6.8 to an external drive. If you have any issues after upgrading to Mavericks, you can boot back into 10.6.8.
Both of these applications can be used to create a clone. If you need help creating your clone, let us know.

  • Can't find the Mavericks upgrade download

    I have a MacBook5,2 Core 2 Duo (4 gb RAM) that's currently running Snow Leopard 10.6.8.
I want to download/install the Mavericks upgrade, but the links to Maverick are gone -- they go to the Yosemite download page.
Is there any way to find/download/install the Mavericks upgrade? Or is it no longer available?
Would an Apple Store be able to install Mavericks? Or would they also only have access to Yosemite?
If I really can't get Mavericks, should I upgrade to Yosemite (although I'd hate to do that before I see more feedback on it)? Or should I upgrade to Mountain Lion (I do have that on disk that I got from Apple a few years ago) for now?
The problem I have with my Macbook is that it's unbelievably slow. A friend suggested Mavericks might help.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

I don't think HD space is the problem. I'm not an experienced user, but AFAICT, I have 63 GBs of space left.
When I bought the Macbook, it had only 2 GBs of RAM. A friend told me that was probably why it was so slow, so I added 2 more GBs. It didn't seem to make much difference. It seems to be a resources issue -- when I open and close apps, I don't think the resources are being freed up. I can only run one or two apps at a time. If I run Firefox with more than 5 or 6 tabs, open, operations slow to a crawl. Chrome is better, but if I have several tabs open, it slows down somewhat. Running Open Office's spreadsheet app at the same time also slows things down.
Anyway, my friend said that Mavericks was better at handling resources, so I wanted to try it. But it looks like I can't get it.

  • No login fields after Mavericks upgrade

After upgrading to Mavericks from OSX 10.8 (through the app store), my computer rebooted but now does not give me an option to log in because there is no username or password field. The gray screen shows up upon booting with the Apple logo and the mouse cursor appears to move around fine.
I can log into another OSx from another partitioned drive and see that the files on the Mavericks' upgraded partition are all there still. Ive tried safe mode, utility repair, cleared PRAM and a few other things but nothing helps bring back the login fields. Since I can not login to the system, I have not been unable to do much more trouble shooting. Any suggestions on how to fix this?
    Mac Pro
    Processor  2 x 2.93 GHz 6-Core Intel Xeon
    Memory 32 GB

I may join you Sebastian and go back to Mountain Lion. I still havent resolved the issue. After reading that some people actually waited 5-8 hours for their username and password dialog box to appear... I decided to wait 18 hours once.. and another time 15 hours after booting in safe mode but...they never appeared.
I did find a number of .dmp files appear on my drive after trying to upgrade (with long randomly named files similar to 32A1F2FA-6GAB-4219-AB20-DEEA343ABBA.dmp) . They were not there beforehand and seem to be created on the times and dates when I tried to fix this issue... with the very first one created on the day I originally upgraded to Mavericks. They seem to coorespond to the times I try to boot the computer up to fix it. I am only able to see these files because I am booting from another partition on another drive which allows me to see the files on the Mavericks drive.
With the disk utility, I always find some epson printer permissions that need to be repaired. I repair them and they always seem to be fixed "at the time". But if I later turn my computer off and on again... they need to be repaired again. I get the same issue on other drives and partitions that work fine so I doubt those specific permission issues are the reason for the Mavericks failure..but who knows....
Looking into other posts.. a lot of people seem to be having luck with clearing the PRAM. Anyone reading this may want to try that while using an Apple keyboard and mouse. Unfortunately it has not worked for me.

  • After Mavericks upgrade, apps using iCloud hang

I had earlier posted in the iWork forum about issues using Pages etc after Mavericks upgrade
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5618268?tstart=90
However, the problem is more general.   It seems that any app that uses iCloud to store data or documents hangs when trying to reference iCloud.
Not all iCloud services are broken, just apps storing data and documents.  For example, Safari bookmarks are still syncing fine over iCloud.  I can go to my iPhone and see my current tabs all listed.
However, any app that references iCloud data storage becomes unresponding.  This includes TextEdit, iWork suite, Pixelmator, and others.
When I go into the System Preferences, and choose iCloud and look at the  "Documents & Data" it is checked on but clicking "options" lists NO apps in the list of apps that store data in iCloud.   I have turned this back on and off without change.  I have also reinstalled both Pages 4.3 and Pages 5.0.1 and nothing changes here.  I have also reinstalled Mavericks (on top of existing) multiple times without any change in this setting.
If I go to manage my iCloud account for Documents & Data I can see apps listed (OS X and iOS) and existing documents that are in my iCloud storage, so the iCloud account is active and working and I can "manage" it from my Mac.
This is a MacPro3,1 and has 10.9 and all updates that have come out since.  It was upgraded from 10.8.4 and that was upgraded (with intermediate 10.8.x) from 10.7.x which had been upgraded from 10.6.x) etc.

The suggestion by Linc Davis here (https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5028839?start=15&tstart=0) fixed the issue for me.
