Maverick will not open my word docs

i get a promt to purchase iWork08 when I try to open a word document.  Seriously?

yeah, probably. darn those prompts. Luckily there is a workaround: see if you can find the document, do a "get into" on it, either right-click, or highlighting it, then pressing cloverleaf+I, then under the "open with" box, choose something else to open it with. If it's a basic document, TextEdit will work okay, but you may want to grab a copy of OpenOffice and use that for now. iWork, if you have the current version, can be upgraded no charge. However, if you have iWork 6 or 7 (iWork 6 was released in 2006, iWork 8 was released in 2007), then it'll probably prompt you to buy iWork 8 or 9+. You don't have to use it to open a word document, though. I don't know what version of iWork you have. I do know you used to get it included when you bought a Macintosh computer, but those days are gone.  now it's $20 per application.  go to apple.com/support, see what version of iWork you do have and if there is a "free"  update for it.  otherwise, the ball's in your court

  • OS 10.8 will not open my word docs, what is the solution?

I installed OS 10.8 after upgrading the ram .System works quicker but it will not allow me to open older Word docs. Is there an equivalent in the enclosed software or what external software will work ?Thanks

The inputs by erict43 and Paul_31 are absolutely correct. Happened to me when I upgraded to Lion. Had Office 2004. Didn't work. Upgrade to Office 2011 and everything will be fine. You can download Office for students at a reasonable price. All your old Office files will be there and when opened and saved again will upgrade themselves to Office 11.
Microsoft and Apple have to keep us buying somehow....
    Good luck,

  • Pictures will not display in Word docs

I'm using latest version of Pages with Mavericks. Word ocs will open but non of the pictures in the document will display - only an empty rectangle where the pic should be.
I know that Word does not work smoothly with Mavericks yet but is the meantime is there an app for opening Word docs or a fix for my problem so I can open in Pages?

Word 2008 and 2011 work with Mavericks, I suggest fixing what you have before trying something else.
    Try this:
Reboot to Safe Mode (hold shift key while you reboot, hold it when you hear the chime and keep holding it until the progress bar appears) Try Word again, post back with the result.

  • Can not open MS word docs

I have an emac running 10.2.8, two users, when i sign in and try to open a word document from the desktop a window opens and says i can not open the document because it's in use by another user. I created this document and the other user has not signed on in months. I then tried all of my word docs and the same message appears. I've shut down the computer, restarted putting in my password but same problem occurs. I repaired permissions but no change. These are my docs and no one else is "signed in" or using them. I cannot copy them or send them via email (which now unexpectedly quits upon opening), Do I need to archive and install?, How much free space on the hard drive do I need to reinstall the OS?
    Thanks for any response.
    Joe

Many system issues can happen as the hard disk drive's capacity is over-full
with saved content and there is no room left in the hard drive for the OS X
and applications to function. The drive should have more than 10% free of
content in order for the OS X and Applications expected to run in the Mac
to have room. This space is for swap files, virtual memory, and flex space
where the system has to automatically find and use free space for most
    everything the computer can do.
{There are specific rules (seen online in helpful articles, some in Support)
on how to transfer iTunes music libraries or make and restore archives
to external hard disk drives and maybe save to DVD if possible; these
    and iPhoto libraries eat up essential space on a hard disk drive.}
The drive is over-full and a failure (including damage to the physical drive)
is a matter of time. He should try to archive music on DVD off the Mac
& then free-up that space on the internal hard disk drive so the OS X
and apps can use the free space for their required functions. Moving a
few dozen original items, after saving them off the computer, to Trash
may be helpful, but that would take a lot of time & looking.
An externally enclosed drive, properly formatted for OS X and capable
of booting the computer (firewire 400) is advised; at this point.
My computers have about 50% empty hard disk drives; that free space
allows the OS X's automatic virtual memory allocation to create and use
that space to help the apps and system function properly. When it is not
there, the system tries to overwrite non-essential files or could cause a
kind of corruption to happen on the main hard disk drive...
The documents and other permission issues are a symptom of other stuff.
    A computer in a good state of maintained health requires some effort;
and when that is not done routinely, things get slower and as the drive
gets full, stuff can fail. So, to free-up user created files such as music
(including hidden duplicates if they exist) so that space can be reclaimed
and used by the OS X, is a good idea.
To get and use an externally enclosed hard disk drive in a self-powered
unit with AC Adapter, probably a FireWire ported one so the transfer
rate is fast enough to get the job done (USB 1.1 is too slow to boot an
older computer, so FireWire can; a clone of the entire computer could
be created on a formatted FireWire bootable externally enclosed drive
and that could be used as a bootable backup.) Archiving this way is a
way to keep all the files and their status collectively together; then if
something happens to the computer's internal drive, this remains.
To boot the computer from the OS X install disc and see if a disk repair
and a permissions repair can be done in that disc's version of Disk Utility
may be helpful. Not sure if that old of a system will tell you much in this
Disk Utility (on installer disc, but not used to install anything) but you
can Verify the SMART status of a hard disk drive & also try to repair it.
But the drive is over-full if there are only mere MBs of free space. He
should look into the Get Info (File menu in Finder) on the Hard Drive
Icon to see what the total capacity of that drive was, and how little is
remaining; then work on getting rid of non-essential items, so as to
save the system itself from damages. Also, if the computer is getting
    older, it may be time to consider a new replacement hard disk drive;
and if so, a larger capacity one could be installed, and the older one
put in an external FireWire enclosure, then the content may be cloned
back into the computer on a partition or direct; so there'd be more
free space that way for the contents. (Or weed out non-essentials, too.)
More information would be needed to proceed, since this situation is
at best sketchy and could be problematic to say the least.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Updated to windows 7 adobe 8 pro will not open a ned doc

My adobe has always worked fine never had a problem till I updated my operating system from vista to windows 7.
I can open an existing doc no problem but when I open adobe 8 pro to start a new doc, adobe closes itself it will not stay open.
I then let adobe update to 8.1.6 and still the same problem.
I got one error that said I needed to activate adobe but the activation buttons are grayed out (not functioning).
I can use a little help please.

    Hi,
Adobe Reader / Acroabt support for Windows 7 begins with release 9.2 of Reader / Acrobat.
Adobe states that earlier releases may install / function but were not tested in Windows 7.

  • IBooks in Maverick will not open / download

Since upgrading to Mavericks yesterday, I cannot access the majority of my iBooks on my Mac. I can see that the majorioty of my iBooks are showing in my iTunes library under iTunes/iBooks.
All barring 5 books have a cloud symbol in the top right of the books. When I click on the book to read the download symbol appears & the progress bar across the bottom of the book moves across & looks like its downloaded. But the book does not open. In the top right hand corner of the iBooks app is a download arrow, if i click on that it shows downloads available i.e. the book I am trying to read, but the open button is greyed out & nothing happens if I click on it.
If i go into the iBooks store and click on purchases it show sthat i have no purchased books to download, but when i click on the All tab it shows all my books, but when i try and click on one it opens up teh page & there is a read button. When i click on read, you can see it attempting to download and again In the top right hand corner of the iBooks app is a download arrow, if i click on that it shows downloads available i.e. the book i am trying to read, but the open button is greyed out & nothing happens if I click on it.
I have tried transfering purchases from my iPhone & iPad (as all my books on on both) and this hasnt doene anything. Ive tried signing in & out & thats donew nothing. In fact 4 books are missing from my physical library & everytimne i try and download from iBooks it states download failed, tray again and check available downloads from iBooks store, but when i do this is says i have no books to download.
Is there any way i can complete trash the iBooks library file, so that it will rebuild itself from the actual files on my Hard disc.  I have been able to do this with iTunes before.
Basically the App is useless to me as i cannot ready 95% of my iBooks.

I have a solution which works for me, but its a pain if you have a lot & lots of e-books.
Make sure iBooks is closed & everything is backed up (a separate copy of your original iTunes books folder with all your books etc would also be useful. I titled mine 'e-book copy').
Go to Spotlight in top right hand corner of your computer & type in iBooks, you should see a folder called iBooks, lick on it & it should open a new finder window.
This it seems is your iBooks library @  ~Library/Containers/com.apple.BKAgentService/Data/Documents/ibooks
I then deleted the iBooks folder completely.
I open the iBooks App. I then search for iBooks again (in spotlight) & see that a new folder has been created as above in the library, I then look in that folder & there is a folder titled books, open it & it should be blank.
In the iBooks App I can see that most of my books are there with the iCloud symbol just as before.
    1) - Click on iBookstore in top left of the App. Then click on purchased under the quick links section (making sure you are signed in).
    2) - It shows that I do not have any books in my library to download (which is wrong as all my books have the iCloud symbol).
    3) - I then clicked on ALL and you should see all of your purchased books.
    4) - I start at the top left & click on the 1st book, it opens the iBookstore page for that book & I then click on the read symbol. This then downloads the book & opens the book for me to read. I  then close the open book.
    5) - If I go back to the books folder in the library  i.e. ~Library/Containers/com.apple.BKAgentService/Data/Documents/ibooks/books I see that a folder has been created titled with a set of numbers& epub i.e. 123456789.epub (this is the folder for the book you have just read / opened / downloaded).
    6) - I open that & click on the file titled iTunesartwork & this shows the cover of the book I just read / downloaded. 7) - So now I know that iBooks has downloaded a new copy to my machine.
Back in iBooks, click on the library button & you should see the book in your library without the iCloud symbol & you can open & read the book within teh iBooks App
I had to do the above steps - 1 to 7 for each and every book in my library which took a long time.
Eventually ALL books were downloaded as they should have been originally.  For PDF's I simply in iBooks went to Add to Library, found the PDF in my e-book copy folder and imported.
This worked for me, not sure if it will work for everyone. But I now have all my books synced across all devices

  • Linked adobe file will not open in Word 2007

I open a word document (.docm) from a share point site and inside it is a linked adobe file. When I try to launch it, it gives me an error that the file cannot be found, server location not available, etc..
However, if I open Adobe Reader first, then this word document, the linked adobe file opens fine.
    Help please.

    Hello there,
By default, Adobe Captivate 4, should create a .bak file. Try removing the file suffix .bak, see if you can open the file from this backup.

  • Encrypted Windows Word Document will not open with Word for Macintosh

I cannot open a password protected/encrypted word document which was created by Word 2007/2010 for Windows even though I have the password. I have searched the internet and there does seem to be an issue whereby Macintosh Word does not support some of the latest encryption from Word for Windows. Does anyone know of any software that can help either Macintosh compatible or any open source/free software for Windows which can help. I have tried several open source word processors (both on Mac OS and Windows) but these do not help so is there a solution other than having to buy Word 2007 or 2010 for Windows?

    Hi Colin,
    sorry to hear.
Found another post that mentions Apples Pages to give a try.

If that also does not work, I'm out of answers.

  • Why can I suddenly not open my Word doc?

My girlfriend has a MacBook Pro running Snow Leopard and she's been editing a simple regular Word document for months now. Suddenly this morning when she tried to open it she got two simultaneous error messages:
    1. Word cannot open this document. The document might be in use or might not be a valid Word document.
    2. Quarantined File Access Blocked - VirusBarrier X5 has blocked access to quarantined file 'utilities.doc'.
She can't IM me the file, email me the file, or put the file on a thumb drive. She could probably use YouSendIt but that wouldn't really solve the actual problem. I have little experience with Macs and am therefore not used to my files being blocked from me. Anyone know how to get around this?

Especially since there are no Mac viruses... it's not hard to be worse than no problem at all, but the >major Mac anti-virus programs put forth a valiant effort in that direction!
While I agree in principle, what the OP doesn't say could be just as important as what the OP does say.
That is, OP says the document in question is Word, but not if it originated from the windows or the mac version of Word.
Since the Mac can be a carrier and transmitter of Windows based virii (macro viruses, in this case), and most Mac-centric AV software can detect/kill windows based virii....
If the OP moves files between Windows and OSX, some sort of AV software may be in order.

  • AE CC on Mavericks Will Not Open Even After 12.0.1 Patch

Im having an issue getting AE CC launching on the new Mavericks operating system. Im using a 2010 MacBook Pro.
The error message I am recieving is " After Effects warning: Could not rename the file ' /Users/derek/Library/Preferences/Adobe/After Effects/ 12.0/Workspaces.459.1407352681807521.xml' to 'Workspaces.xml'. I then receive an unexpected failure during startup message.
I have seen similar posts on this issue involving changing the permissions to the preferences folder and deleting the preferences folder and letting AE repopulate after launch. None of which has worked.
Any additional help would be appreciated.
    Thanks

What you are describing is certainly a problem with permissions set for that file.
Set the permissions for the entire /Users/derek/Library/Preferences/Adobe/After Effects/12.0/  folder to be writable.
If that doesn't work, then uninstall After Effects (being certain to choose the option to remove all preferences) and then reinstall it.
This messup of permissions happens when Mac OS doesn't correctly preserve permissions of various folder when you upgrade an operating system, rather than installing the new operating system fresh.

  • How can I get back my Word docs now that Pages will not open them?

How can I retrieve my Word docs now that Pages will not open them in Mavericks.  I have a brand new iMac with my evolving manuscript for a book transsferred from my now defunct MacBook Pro by external drive.  Pages tells me that "PowerPC apps are "no longer supported" and Mavericks will not open Microsoft Office, though it is still in Applications.  Would really appreciate ANY help!

You will have to have an app that will open them first, you can upgrade to Office for Mac 2011 which is an Intel based app then open the docs and retry. Your docs were created with extremely old version of Office for Mac, version 2004!
Another possiblity is  using a web based compatible MS Office for Mac app and see if it will open your doc and then save it, then attempt to re-open in Pages.

Hi, App Store tells me I have installed the latest Pages update, yet it will not open Pages docs created on other machines that DO have the latest version . Any tips?

    Hi
    Pages 5.0 and 10.9.
While App Store tells me there is no update avalable to Pages, which it says was installed Nov. 4, its the old Avatar/logo thingo and, as I say, it will not open the Pages docs created on my MacBook, which definiitely does have the new Pages running smoothly.

  • Pages '08 will not open .doc documents after upgrading to Mavericks

Since updating to Mavericks Pages '08 will not open .doc documents even when created with Pages.

I am unable to check what you have on your Mac so you will have to run your own series of tests to determine exactly where the problem lies.
Starting with the file extension on the Word files.
You didn't say, but have you installed Pages 5?
Is your previous installation of Pages '08 in your Applications/iWork folder?

  • I downloaded os x mavericks and now ms word 2011 will not open.

I downloaded OS X Mavericks and now my MS Word 2011 will not open. My MS Office is not new. The only thing new is Mavericks. If someone can, please help me get Word working again. Excel and Powerpoint are working fine. My previous system was Lion, which worked wonderfully in every way. I did not need a cloud for anything. I feel as though I am now in the fog.

I was able to find some relevant postings after I asked for help and one of them said to restart my mac again. I did so and this allowed my Java to find the path it needed to complete the update required to run Word. Thankfully I do not have to remove MS Office at this time, but I appreciate the advice. If it starts giving me problems again, I will go through the steps you advised. Thanks!
