Maverick wont recognize my toshiba external hard drive. Any idea?

Maverick wont recognize my toshiba external hard drive. Two days ago, before attaining Maverick (what a mistaaake), it recognized the external. Now it only recognizes other external hard drives, but not my toshiba. All my music is locked away
Thanks for your time...

Once I press mount it says:
The disk "TOSHIBA EXT" could not be mounted.
Try running First Aid on the disk and then retry mounting.
I have a very valuble music collection on this. I got it around a week ago and it hasn't been acting the same since Maverick. I'm just hoping the problem IS maverick here. But it must be.... Because Maverick won't even recognize my brookstone mini projector. I really appreciate the help, what should I do from here?

  • How do I get my MacBook Pro to recognize my Toshiba external hard drive?

How do I get my MacBook Pro to recognize my Toshiba external hard drive? I'm working on transferring my music from our home computer to my new laptop and I already got all my music onto the hard drive but now, when I plug it into my MacBook Pro, it doesn't recognize it. There isn't an icon that pops up and nothing happens at all. The blue light on the hard drive that indicates that it knows it is plugged into something comes up but that's about it. Someone told me I might have to "format" it but I don't know what that means and I don't know how to do it. I just want to get my music from the hard drive to my laptop so please help!

I don't know about your first question... I went to finder, preferences, then general but I didn't see anything for the hard drive.
Huh, in the Finder menu, Preferences, you will see this:
Nope, disk utility cannot see it. I've tried unplugging it and plugging it back in but it still won't recognize it.puter that's a Mac...
If DU cannot see it then the preferences is just an academic exercise.
If this is a USB drive then as mentioned above you may need a powered USB hub since there may not be enough power from the USB to run the drive.  What else do you have plugged into the USB ports?  If there's some stuff you can unplug it then do it and see if your drive mounts.
What do you mean from a Windows machine? It's a Toshiba hard drive and I put my music on it from my home computer that's a Mac...
Which is all I wanted to know, i.e., whether the drive came from a Winows machine.  So it's been formatted and created on a mac.  Therefore it should mount on this other mac machine.  So it most likely is a power problem.

  • FCX Wont recognize plugged in external Hard Drives! what tha?

So after watching all of the tutorials about importing and managing media I am still having issues with FinalCutX recognizing mounted hard drives.  When plugged in they clearly show up on my desktop and all of my files are accessable, how ever when trying to import new clips into events it will not give me the option to select other plugged in hard drives.  (like they don't even show up)  The worst part is that its inconsistant.  Sometimes one of the hard drives might show up but the other wont.  or none but my cpu's hard drive will show up.  Please help thank you.

Google Translate delivers the following result:
if your hard disk contains mp4 files (imported from a mobile phone for example), this discis interpreted as a camera or camera (you'll find it available when you click "importvideo". to be able to properly read the HD, delete or move elsewhere for your mp4 filesand the disc will return to be read normally FCPX. i think it's a bug in the software and i hope the next release will solve it. so let me know if you solve your problem.

  • What to do? coudn't open my toshiba external hard drive that I can open before

I have a Toshiba external hard drive that I've been using without any problems before I upgraded my OS to Mavericks...Now I couldn't find the drive anymore but it seems that my mac detects it but it just is not opening it anymore...couldn't find it in my finder window....Anyone who knows how to fix this? Thanks.

Have you reset power on both the Mac and hard drive?
From time to time, during sleep/wake cycles, my network attached drive wouldn't show up in my Fiinder. When I would click to Connection, they would come up grayed out. Cycling power on the Mac didn't really help much. But cycling power on the hard drive unit did.

  • How to set up a Toshiba external hard drive on my Macbook Pro?

    Hi there,
I just bought a Toshiba external hard drive that says on the package it is compatible with Macs. I plugged it in, installed the Pogoplug PC for Mac (no idea what this is) and Tuxera NTFS for Mac (it was in the "Mac Driver" folder). Now what? Is my data now automatically going onto the hard drive? Do I need to install anything else? This seems too easy! What am I missing here?
    Thanks!

New hard drives out of box should be formatted for your Mac
go to DISK UTILITY and verify what it says your HD is formatted as under the "ERASE" tab
HFS+ above is the "mac format"
Format (erase) it in "mac osx Extended journaled"
AFTER THIS YOU CAN DRAG AND DROP FILES AS YOU LIKE
    To show HD on desktop
go into FINDER at top then PREFERENCES  then GENERAL tab
then check "hard disks" and "external disks"
There is no such thing as a MAC or PC hard drive,.....they can all be formatted as you wish for either PC or Mac (or both)
    FORMAT TYPES
    FAT32 (File Allocation Table)
Read/Write FAT32 from both native Windows and native Mac OS X.
    Maximum file size: 4GB.
    Maximum volume size: 2TB
You can use this format if you share the drive between Mac OS X and Windows computers and have no files larger than 4GB.
    NTFS (Windows NT File System)
    Read/Write NTFS from native Windows.
Read only NTFS from native Mac OS X
To Read/Write/Format NTFS from Mac OS X, here are some alternatives:
For Mac OS X 10.4 or later (32 or 64-bit), install Paragon (approx $20) (Best Choice for Lion)
Native NTFS support can be enabled in Snow Leopard and Lion, but is not advisable, due to instability.
AirPort Extreme (802.11n) and Time Capsule do not support NTFS
    Maximum file size: 16 TB
    Maximum volume size: 256TB
You can use this format if you routinely share a drive with multiple Windows systems.
HFS+ ((((MAC FORMAT)))) (Hierarchical File System, a.k.a. Mac OS Extended (Journaled) Don't use case-sensitive)
    Read/Write HFS+ from native Mac OS X
Required for Time Machine or Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper! backups of Mac internal hard drive.
To Read HFS+ (but not Write) from Windows, Install HFSExplorer
    Maximum file size: 8EiB
    Maximum volume size: 8EiB
You can use this format if you only use the drive with Mac OS X, or use it for backups of your Mac OS X internal drive, or if you only share it with one Windows PC (with MacDrive installed on the PC)
    EXFAT (FAT64)
Supported in Mac OS X only in 10.6.5 or later.
Not all Windows versions support exFAT.
    exFAT (Extended File Allocation Table)
AirPort Extreme (802.11n) and Time Capsule do not support exFAT
    Maximum file size: 16 EiB
    Maximum volume size: 64 ZiB
You can use this format if it is supported by all computers with which you intend to share the drive.  See "disadvantages" for details.

  • My Toshiba external hard drive is no longer being recognised by my Macbook Air - solution?

My Toshiba external hard drive is no longer being recognised by my Macbook Air. The light on the hard drive is on, but it won't appear on my computer's desktop or anywhere else. How can I fix this?

    Hi rivraff,
If you are having issues mounting an external hard drive volume, you may want to see if it shows up and/or can be repaired in Disk Utility; you may find the following article helpful:

  • HT1338 I bought my macbook pro november 2011 and I still cannot use my toshiba external hard drive.  what updates do i need to get?

I don't know my operating system.  I bought it in nov of 2011.  I am trying to axcess a toshiba external hard drive.  what new update do I need to get?

You can find out your current system version by select About This Mac from the Apple menu.  To make sure it is updated, select Software Update from the Apple menu.  A Mac from Nov. 2011 is probably running "Lion," and the latest version of Lion is Mac OS X 10.7.4.
But that should not affect the connection of an external hard drive.  There are no special updates for connecting standard external drives.
Does the external Toshiba drive connect by USB port?  Is it the smaller type that gets power from the port (no conection except for the one cable), or is it larger (with its own power supply)?

Check Finderr->Preferences->General and ensure that HDs are selected for display. If so and they still don't, Reset the NVRAM/PRAM and Reset the SMC, and see if that does the trick.

  • My toshiba external hard drive is not being recognized, except when I eject it. I have the preferences checked to show icon and have checked utilities folder. nothing. Help!

I have a iMac, Yosemite 10.10 and my toshiba external hard drive is not being recognized, except when I eject it!. I have the preferences checked to show icons and have looked in the utilities folder..nothing. I have also changed ports. ??

    A few things to try:
1-Repair permissions and restart your computer.
    2-Zap the PRAM
3-Use Software Update/App Store to update your OS to OS 10.10.3.  Also, update everything SU/AS has to offer for your computer.  When done, repair permissions and restart your computer.

  • I have a Toshiba external hard drive that i used to back up my Windows 7 HP -- I want to transfer files to my new Mac and it won't accept. Help?

I have a Toshiba external hard drive that I used to back up my Windows 7 HP -- I am not able to get the files off of it (pictures) onto the Mac. I am NOT a very technical person. IS there a simple easy way to explain and do this -- OR a simple way to just say it is not possible?

If you connect the external hard drive to your Mac does it show up in the Finder? If so, do the files you are trying to transfer show up? What happens when you try to move them over?
What kind of Mac are you using and what operating system does it have running on it?

  • My new 24in imac doesn't recognize my usb external hard drive- snow leopard

i was attempting to do a new time machine back up on my new mac but it won't recognize the usb external hard drive (kaser 250gb). i used it frequently on my old g5 imac, no problems. i plugged the hard drive into my g4 ibook and it recognized it right away. i followed the apple tip of pulling the power plug out of the wall power socket and pulled all the usb cables out as well (i have the wireless keyboard). i let it rest for over 5 minutes and only plugged in my wacom stylus and usb external hard drive. still nothing. and it doesn't show either in disk utility. i also downloaded as per another thread the 3g ntfs system preference but to no avail. the only thing i can of doing is erase and reformat my external on my ibook, but i don't want to risk loosing the data without a back up.
anything else i can try? (before i buy time capsule) thanks

i just checked again by plugging the external into my ibook g4 and checked how it was formatted - mac os extended (journaled).
Then the 3GFS software is not required at all.
i have an idea, not sure if it will work and it will have to wait a couple days until i get my firewire back from a friend, but this is what i'm thinking: my intel imac has a 1tb hard drive. could i use target mode between my imac and ibook? with my ibook i'd attach the external hard drive, then using the firewire and target mode start it up. hoping that the ibook hard drive and the attached external hard drive would show on my intel mac for which i could copy over the external back ups onto my imac. once completed, i could erase and reformat the external on my ibook and then try again on my imac to see if it appears on my desktop. do you think this might work (even though it is correctly formatted already?)
I use Target mode on a regular basis for mounting the internal drive on a Mac to transfer or salvage data. I don't know if you will be able to connect to an external drive on the Target computer. There's not usually any reason for this and I don't know if the Target Mode will enable the Logic board to deal with the USB ports and transfer data. I kinda doubt it, but other more experienced users can jump in here.
I don't think the problem with your external drive is the format, since you've already checked it and it is already formatted for a Mac. Intel Mac's will mount drives formatted by a PPC Mac with no problems, unless your OS doesn't support the chipset in the USB case that connects to the drive. There are some USB drives that are known to not work well with SL but worked fine with Leopard.
You can buy a cheap USB case (about $30) and move the drive from the old case to the new case, or buy a USB to IDE adaptor cable (about $20), or you can buy a larger external drive that will work on the iMac and use the G4 to transfer the date from the old drive to a new one. Or you can take both drives to a friend with a Mac and use Disk Utility to restore the USB drive to a partition on the Firewire drive. That doesn't fix the USB drive to work with your new Mac, but unless the vendor comes out with a firmware fix, I think that's a lost cause anyway.
other than the above, i may just go buy a 1tb time capsule,
I would not be getting a Time Capsule to back up a single computer. Wireless backups are a lot slower than FireWire or USB (of course, it's the initial backup that takes so much time). If you do have several Mac's that need a TM backup volume, then the Capsule can help you out. It is supported by Apple (and there are a lot of users here in the forums). I'm using a ReadyNAS device for network backups, but it is not supported by Apple, and I have to rely on NetGear for fixes if an OS update breaks my backup system.
BTW, it's a good chance that a TC device will be able to see and mount your USB drive. The incompatible chipset problem with some drives seems to be limited to the USB drivers in SL which the TC is not running. That's why I said that a USB hub may also let you see your drive, the problem is there's no guarantee's...

  • Itunes and all my movies have disappeared,i can no longer add to library from my external hdd which ive always used and can only add from the laptops own hard drive, any ideas what the issue could be?

ive recently updated, itunes and all my movies have disappeared,i can no longer add to library from my external hdd which ive always used and can only add from the laptops own hard drive, any ideas what the issue could be?if i transfer the movies from the external to the laptop they will add to the library without any problem so theres no issue with the laptop but when i go to add file in itunes i can path to the external but as soon as i select the file nothing happens, just goes back to itunes

This happens if the file is no longer where iTunes expects to find it. Possible causes are that you or some third party tool has moved, renamed or deleted the file, or that the drive it lives on has had a change of drive letter. It is also possible that iTunes has changed from expecting the files to be in the pre-iTunes 9 layout to post-iTunes 9 layout,or vice-versa, and so is looking in slightly the wrong place.
Select a track with an exclamation mark, use Ctrl-I to get info, then cancel when asked to try to locate the track. Look on the summary tab for the location that iTunes thinks the file should be. Now take a look around your hard drive(s). Hopefully you can locate the track in question. If a section of your library has simply been moved, or a drive letter has changed, it should be possible to reverse the actions.
Alternatively, as long as you can find a location holding the missing files, then you should be able to use my FindTracks script to reconnect them to iTunes .

selling my old mac book pro. I need to delete everything on the hard drive. any ideas ?I do not have the boot disks.

If the Mac came w/system DVDs, you will need to obtain them prior to selling.
You can get replacement System Install & Restore CD/DVDs from Apple's Customer Support - in the US, (800) 767-2775 - for a nominal S&H fee. You'll need to have the model and/or serial number of your Mac available.
If you're not in the US, you may need to go through the regional Apple Store that serves your location to find the contact number. Here's a list of links to all of those - http://store.apple.com/Catalog/US/Images/intlstoreroutingpage.html Another resource:  International Support Phone #s.

  • My Toshiba external hard drive won't mount after OSX Mavericks update. Please help.

Two days ago I updated to Mavericks 10.9.3 and prior to this, my Toshiba 1TB external hard drive worked perfectly well. Since the update, my hard drive will no longer mount. It shows up in Disk Utility but will not let me 'mount', 'verify disk' or 'repair disk' through Disk Utility. My sister has an identical Macbook Pro which she has not updated to Mavericks. I have tested my hard drive on her laptop and it works just fine. Can anyone tell me how to fix this? Do I need to reformat my hard drive (and if so, will that clear everything on my hard drive?) or is there a simple fix?
Thank you for any assistance you can offer!

Reset the NVRAM/PRAM and Reset the SMC, then try again.

  • Mavericks won't recognize my lacie external hard drive

I've been using a LaCie external hard drive for my Time Machine backups and it's been working fine until a couple of weeks ago. Mavericks no longer recognizes the drive. I tested the drive out on a non-Mavericks Macbook and it booted up fine. I see there are issues with this, but wondering if anyone has a work around or if you've found there is a fix I can do? Really frustrating to not be able to access my archives or be able to back up my work!
