Mavericks 10.9.1 continued incompatibility with Gmail drafts

Having sensed the frustration of Mavericks adopters with Gmail via Mac Mail, I waited until the first update (10.9.1) to install the new OS.  I am a heavy user of DRAFTS in Gmail - in some instances to start emails I plan to finish later, and in others to maintain a running set of notes on a project, accessible from home, office or mobile (as they live on the Gmail IMAP server).
I cannot solve the puzzle of how to force DRAFTS to live on the server via Mavericks.  They only seem to live locally.  Mac Mail shows a DRAFTS folder, and I can begin and save emails to this folder, but they do not migrate to the server.
The "[Imap]/Drafts" folder in picture 2 does not capture draft emails living in Drafts > Google in picture 1.

more griping: selecting a series of email addresses in Excel - one per cell - and then pasting into a BCC field in Mavericks mail is now impossible, as the comma-delimiting feature has been abandoned.  here is a workaround (thanks to https://discussions.apple.com/people/frankvv).  come on Apple!
As an alternative workaround: add a column in your spreadsheet with a formula that adds a comma to the mailaddress (something like
=A2&","  if you're using Excel).

  • Maverick's Mail does not work with Gmail ! it works better with iOS 7

    For info.
I do know how it's complex to program and more for an OS System.
Maverick's Mail DOES NOT work proprely with Gmail boxes ? Gmail incoming or outcoming messages are correctly notified on my iPhone 5s with iOS 7. But not on my Macbook Pro retina (end 2012) with Mavericks. One update was suppose to solve the trouble.
Hope you'll solve the problem as soon as possible. Bur not during the nights. But during your daytimes' work !
Wish you nice end of year's days.
And please get my best wishes for 2014. Hope you'll get a lot of these nice little moments of happiness.
    Best regards.

Have you checked your incoming and outgoing mail server settings?
If you are using IMAP, it should look something like the following:
Incoming Mail (IMAP) Server - Requires SSL
    imap.gmail.com
    Port: 993
    Requires SSL:Yes
Outgoing Mail (SMTP) Server - Requires TLS
    smtp.gmail.com
    Port: 465 or 587
    Requires SSL: Yes
    Requires authentication: Yes
Use same settings as incoming mail server
If you are using POP3, it should look something like the following:
    Incoming mail server type: POP3
Incoming mail (POP3 or IMAP) server: pop.gmail.com. Google Apps users, enter the server name provided, don't add your domain name in these steps.
              Port: 995
Outgoing e-mail server (SMTP) name: smtp.gmail.com
         Port: 465
    Outgoing server requires authentication: enabled

  • Repeatedly resynchronizing with gmail

My Mail.app client continuously resynchronizes with gmail. The process runs for hours at a time, apparently ends, and then it begins all over again -- so that for practically all the time my client is open, the system is attempting to synchronize. Ideas?

2 GB of RAM is pretty tight. I imagine that's at the very low end of what Yosemite wants, which could slow things down.
As far as scroll direction, you can always change it in the trackpad settings. Unsure why it got flipped, but you can fix it in about 5 seconds. Choose "natural" (or don't) depending on how you like it.

  • Apple Mail STILL does NOT sync with GMAIL...even with Mavericks 10.9.2...why?

Apple MAIL still does not sync well with Gmail.
I have to close Apple Mail program down, re-load it, select "synchonize all accounts." Then MAYBE it will finally sync up. If not, I do this again and again. Then, randonmly it seems, it finally syncs.
My iOS devices sync instantly and accurately 100% of the time. When I pull down the inbox to update, it does so almost at once. Accurately.
WHY does Mavericks APPLE MAIL have so many issues STILL!? Worked fine before Mavericks? Is there a solution?
    Mike

I'm not sure if you were seriously asking or just looking for a place to vent, but I've read a lot about this topic and so I'll give a brief reply.
Unfortunately, I've not seen a solution to this problem. Many people have had success with various "voodoo" solutions (re-starting or some variant) but there's really been no reliable, consistent answer to this problem. Most people seem to think that syncing was improved (but was not completely fixed) with the 10.9.2 update. The only "solution" I've seen is to move off of GMail.
As to WHY this is happening, well, again I've not seen anybody diagnose the problem in any scientific way, but the consensus seems to be that this problem started because Apple modified the way the Mail program stored and indexed a GMail account. Many people (including you) say "it worked fine before" and yes perhaps it did, but there was a big problem lurking.
As you might know, Google moved off the mail standard when they created their mail system. Now, this is a rant for another post, but IMO by doing that they should have provided code for 3rd-party mail clients to use their new mail system properly. But of course that would defeat any competitive advantage their own client had, so instead all they did was support an IMAP interface.
The problem is that when an email arrives at your GMail account, it is in your Inbox and also in the "All Mail" folder. This is not in concert with IMAP protocol where a message is only in one folder. So a naive IMAP email client downloads such a message twice. If a message happens to be in a several folders (tags in GMail-speak), an IMAP client downloads it several times. It might have looked like it was "working fine" to you, but for people who have many gigabytes of mail, this duplication is a big problem.
Likewise, if you search for an email, an unaware IMAP client will find it in multiple folders, and report back each copy. Anyway, you get the idea. Apple tried to improve their Mail client to support this, and unfortunately they have a big bug. Well, I say "big" because it really annoys me. Apparently it must be not be affecting a large percentage of Mavericks users or else they would have fixed it by now. Even more annoying, there's no "switch" to get Mail to act like a dumb IMAP client again. It appears to detect that it is talking to GMail and this new system kicks in automatically. (Perhaps this could be tricked by using some kind of proxy?)
So why is this not happening on iOS? Well, again, nobody knows for sure (and Apple isn't saying), but the theory is that they didn't implement this complex scheme on iOS (yet). Maybe they were first testing it out on Mavericks, or perhaps they didn't think it was worth the trouble because on iOS the Mail caches are typically much smaller. On a desktop machine, usually there is a copy of all your IMAP mail sitting on the disk. On a mobile device, only a few messages are kept around at any time.
Sorry I don't have more info to give at this time. Good luck.
    Bark.

  • Mail in continuous "Synchronizing with Server" (all mail, not just Mail.app)

Since upgrading to 10.9 Mavericks, Mail (Apple) continually syncrhonizes with the servers. I have a plethora of folders stored via iCloud (IMAP). When it gets to the end, there's a short lull but, if I do anything else, the process starts again. (Viewable via Mail's Activity Window (Cmd-Opt-Zero).)
It always synchronizes of course, but it used to be in the blink of an eye, and (seemingly) not each and every folder.
I thought it was a Mail only issue, but I downloaded Airmail from the Mac App Store to give it a whirl, and the problem is the same: it synchronizes with the server continuously. As with Mail, when it gets through with the last folder, there's a pause, and it starts up again.
When it was assumed to just be a Mail.app issue, it was one thing, but now it appears its a universal mail issue. I've done some research, and I know Gmail users are feeling the pain, but I don't have Gmail -- my only account is my mac/me/icloud one.
Some have suggested it's a bug with Mail, but wouldn't my issue with Airmail rule that out? Others have posted that the issue is with Spotlight and how it indexes mail messages for search. (FWIW, I've unchecked "Mail & Messages" in Spotlight but it doesn't seem to have helped the issue.)

I don't know if this is the exact same problem.  I sync my Gmail and my iCloud mail accounts on the Mail program.  Since upgrading to Mavericks, whenever my Mail program is being used, it is constantly notifying me about VIP mail in my mail box -- over and over again, the same mail items. It's annoying, and I assume this pointless activity is also affecting performance at the margins.  How do I shut this off but still get notified when I get NEW mail from VIPs?

  • Messages getting corrupted in Mail app with Gmail

I'm having a following recurring problem with Mail app and my Gmail (company) account: At least once a day Mail app database is getting corrupted / out of sync with Gmail account. Mail is showing most of the mails correctly in the UI but some of the new messages are not the right ones but rather copies of older, typically already deleted emails. I.e. Instead of showing the real new msg content (subject, sender, msg body) it is showing in its place an older already deleted msg. How do I know: I go and check what Gmail webmail shows in browser window.
Rebuilding account sometimes works, often not. Usually I have to rebuild, close mail app, start again to get it back in sync. I have tried once deleting all Envelope-index files in Mail Library so that it did a longer rebuild. Helped for few hours and then this started again. Mail app is getting corrupted at least once a day. Very annoying because I cannot trust what I see, but have to check constantly webmail, which I would rather not use as my main tool for mail.
This problem started already with Lion and continued with Mountain Lion.
I guess next step is to delete all my account & setting and re-configure Mail app. Any other tips?

I'll chime in here to say that it affects me too.
Using gmail and mail ActOn to move messages around in mail.app. I'll start trying to see if I can make the corruption happen without using ActOn. I didn't have this problem in 10.4; and I only spent a week with 10.5 so I don't remember it happening then.
How do you identify the messages in the the finder for deleting so they can be re-downloaded? I've been accessing my corrupted attachments through gmail's web interface, so your work around would be easier than mine, assuming there is an easy way to find the right message.

  • Firefox from version 3.6 to 11 beta doesn't work properly with gmail

Gmail doesn't work properly with any version of firefox from 3.6 to 11. I have tried several newer versions of firefox and they ALL DO NOT WORK PROPERLY with GMAIL!!!!!! THIS IS VERY FRUSTRATING & ANNOYING!! I can't click on any links or it just keeps saying LOADING when I try to delete a message or even go into the gmail settings.

Try the Firefox SafeMode to see how it works there. <br />
    ''A troubleshooting mode, which disables most Add-ons.'' <br />
''(If you're not using it, switch to the Default Theme.)''
    * You can open the Firefox 4.0+ SafeMode by holding the '''Shft''' key when you use the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
    * Or use the Help menu item, click on '''Restart with Add-ons Disabled...''' while Firefox is running. <br />
''Don't select anything right now, just use "Continue in SafeMode."''
''To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before using the Firefox shortcut (without the Shft key) to open it again.''

  • Why Does Safari Use Excessive Memory with Gmail?

I am running Safari 7.0.1 along with Maverics (10.9.1) on a 2011 MacBook Air with 4 GB of memory. Just recently I have begun to notice excessive memory usage when using Gmail. I have iStat Menus as well as something called MemoryKeeper so I can monitor memory use in real time.
The table below shows numbers taken from Activity Monitor with each of the sites running in a single tab.  The Safari Web Content is through the roof with Gmail compared to My Yahoo or indeed with any other single site. In Gmail it starts out above 500 MB and slowly comes down to the lower end indicated if I do nothing. If I open tabs with both My Yahoo and Gmail, I sink below 100 MB and if I have three tabs open I'm heading to zero. As far as I can tell, the excessive memory useage only occurs with Gmail.
    Process
    Yahoo
    Gmail
    Safari
    156 MB
    167 MB
    Safari Web Content
    96 MB
    531-338 MB
    Kernel Task
    464 MB
    464 MB
    Free
    662 MB
    210 MB
Typically I will close Safari and start it again if I get much below 100 MB. I usually have to close Safari at the end of the day to refresh it for the next day. This has only become a problem within the last month or so, and I am at a loss to explain it. I thought it might be Mavericks related (though I have been running Mavericks since its release), but then the Safari I have on my 5 year old Mac Mini running Snow Leopard gives me similar results.
When I run Google Chrome I don't have any of these problems. Indeed, though it is not my preference, I am having to use it more and more for day to day activities or I have to stick with one tab if I am going back and forth between Gmail and other sites. I have not seen this problem reported elsewhere, so I have to believe there is something going on in my system. I have cleared the cache one time on both systems, but that doesn't seem to have made any difference. I would appreciate any comments or suggestions.
    -Bill

I would not have even tried this app had I not heard about it on the Mac Rountable podcast (episode #222), where it received favorable comments from otherwise knowledgeable people. It also has a 4.5 star rating on the Mac App Store with 706 5-Star ratings out of 1,049. If you add up the 5-Star and 4-Star ratings you get close to 1,000 favorable rates right there. I have to wonder if people really know what's going on. Since the most obvious detrimental effects for me were centered around using Safari with Gmail on Mavericks, others must not be using that lethal combination. As I mentioned, using Google Chrome does not seem to have any obvious deliterious effects.
Well, there's going to be one more 1-Star rating reflecting my experience.

  • Mail crashing when importing or syncing with gmail.

After upgrade to Yosimite my Mail keeps crashing. Usually it is like this: i open it, then after minute it crashed. Usually with following error: "Crashed Thread: 3  -[MailApp performSynchronizationForAccounts:]  Dispatch queue: NSOperationQueue 0x618000051040" I was trying to find particular mail, but it crashes on different messages in different time, so it doesn't look like corrupted message. So i deleted com.apple.mail and Mail folder from Library and started Mail again. I added my gmail account and during importing mail crashed on last message, like 834 of 835. After launching Mail again issues continues, random crashes after 30-60 seconds. Error is the same. So it looks like it crashes during syncing with gmail. Any help? Thanks.

I'm having a similar problem. I'm helping someone restore from a TimeMachine backup. I've been able to import every previous mailbox except for the actual In box. It has crashed twice at the same place (exactly at 4000 messages, out of an In box of ~6000 messages).

  • Unstable mail with gmail

Mail is behaving very unreliably with gmail. I don't know if it's a gmail problem or Apple problem. On the other hand, gmail works perfectly with my iPhone, so one could presume it's mail.app. It also seems to have become worse after 10.5.5, but that could be a coincidence. Here is what happens
Ever so often, mail cannot connect to gmail. It shows the little warning triangle outside the inbox. It seems to happen when coming out of sleep, or changing network (e.g., airport->ethernet). I cannot quit mail either, but has to force quit it. After I then restart it, it will connect well enough to gmail and retrieve my mail.
    Any suggestions?

It just happened again. This time I did not have to force quit mail, quit worked. However, after I started up again, it insisted on downloading a couple of thousand old messages again. It appears it did not download the complete messages, because it only took a couple of minutes. Some kind of sync? Still, it's continually unstable.
Anybody have mail and gmail IMAP working smoothly? Any tricks?

  • Mail won't synch with Gmail IMAP

Same problem as so many other loyal Mac users on these forums...
New Macbook Pro 2013 running Mavericks 10.9.1 and Mail 7.1 (1827).
It's been synching fine with Gmail IMAP for months. Then two days ago, was no longer to synch incoming mail. I can still send Gmail fine. just won't receive new mail.
Yes, I checked my settings. They're fine.
I've spent hours on these forums looking up and trying the various home remedies: Repair Permissions, Take All Mail Offline/Online, Uncheck SHow All Mail Imap, nothing works.
Can we just get the %&*%&$ Mail to WORK?
    What else can I do?

Mac Mail stopped synching my inbound GMail last evening.  Was working fine for several months on 10.9.x.  Non-GMail accounts worked okay.  Connection Doctor was all green.  Restarted Mail and the laptop a few times.  Tried Safe Mode, repaired permissions and system disk.
There's a link to Google support at the bottom of the Mail > Preferences > Accounts window so I clicked it, poked around and found this troubleshooting suggestion on the Known Issues page a few minutes ago (link is below):
IMAP client stopped syncing mail from the server
If you are experiencing problems with your IMAP client, try changing the visibility of “All mail” and “Drafts” labels from the (GMail web) settings:
Click the gear icon in the upper-right and select Gmail settings on the top of any Gmail page.
    Select the Labels tab.
Ensure that the "Show in IMAP" checkbox is selected for both "All mail" and "Drafts".
Neither of these were checked as I didn't want "All mail" sent down to my Mac.  But changing these settings caused unsynced mail to be delivered.  Permanent fix?  Who knows?  Thought I'd mention it though.

  • Yosemite Mail still has sync problems with Gmail - any solutions?

I notice that Yosemite Mail still has sync problems with Gmail. After running for some hours, I noticed there were 6 emails in my Gmail account that had not synced over the past hour.
In the meanwhile, for safety's sake (don't want to miss emails!) I'm back to Mailplane. But I wonder if anybody knows of a solution to this long term problem first introduced in Mavericks. Works fine in iOS Mail though.
    Thanks,
    doug

I don't think we'll ever have a "best of both worlds" Doug. I've used Gmail since the week it launched the first beta in 2004, and it's always been a bit of a love-hate relationship for me (mostly love). With the demise of the Google Notifier for Mac, I went with Mailplane, but even it has problems. Like when I see my iPhone update with new mail and I'm looking at Mailplane and it won't update at times with even a forced refresh. I often have to close/reopen it to see new messages. But, it's hard to live without my Google Calendar only a tab click away, one of the primary reasons I use Mailplane, that plus changing view zoom sticks with Mailplane and won't with Gmail.
For years I've thought Gmail labels were the perfect filing solution, but over the past few weeks I've been analyzing just how much I really use that feature, and for me...it's not all that much. I think I could simplify my life by putting everything into appropriate folders (as in all other email apps). Apple doesn't realize just how much money they're losing by not allowing people to use private domains with iCloud mail...which I would do in a heartbeat just because it would work perfectly with Mail.app. I would pay even more than I currently pay Google for this solution with Google Apps Business. So, I'm actually on the verge of moving my private domain to the best email service I can find and then using it with Mail.app. The problem here, of course, is I'll lose the best spam control on the planet (Gmail). So, as you say, there simply is not a "best" solution for all these things. I'll at least try a new email service first with some other domain to see how I like it before moving my primary email.
Lastly, the other thing that incenses me is synching of flags between iOS and Apple Mail. It works fine between Gmail and iOS Mail, since all I care about is whether a message is starred/flagged or not.  But using Apple Mail, when I flag a message it will not show as flagged in their own iOS Mail, which is incomprehensible, given they built both apps.
If you find a great solution or discover anything new...please post it here, Doug. Thanks.

  • HT6030 I am still having issues with GMAIL not syncing or moving it's duplicating items as I move them to folders and my inbox is overflowing now..... help?

according to the last update it was supposed to fix the gmail issue in apple mail with syncing/archiving/etc. now it is not only duplicating but still not syncing properly and moving emails once I've moved them/ My inbox is overflowing and this is NOT acceptable.

as rediculous as this is, I enabled "all mail" under the labels, then went into the actual apple mail settings and checked some box about updateing immediately (for deleted items) . then I had to quit mail then open it back up  - it "appears" to have synced properly. I'll let you know if it all comes back, but this is really a pain in the butt, I swapped from Entourage a few months back because it started acting weird with gmail.
anyone have any other mail options if this continues to not work? I don't want to have to pull gmail in my browser to move read items each day.
    thanks for all the help.
