Mavericks 10.9.1 Killed my iTunes

Hey,
I installed Mavericks 10.9.1 a few hours ago and now itunes will open but just freezes and won't load. I just get the spinning wheel over the app until i force quit it. I have rebooted the machine to no avail.
Anyone else having problems?
I'm on a 15" MBP late 2012.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot insafe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

i have a 2008 imac with snow leopard.  i installed update 10.9.3 not realizing it's best for Maverick's users.  Now my Itunes 11.2.2 won't burn playlists to CD.   Anyone else with this problem?  CAn I uninstall the 10.9.3 update?  Also my HP scannerwill not save the displayed scanned document since this update!  it just saves gray.

If you have your old system backed up then erase the drive and restore your backup. If you don't have a backup then backup your entire Home folder. Erase the drive and install Snow Leopard after which you can restore your Home folder from the backup.
    Clean Install of Snow Leopard
Be sure to make a backup first because the following procedure will erase
the drive and everything on it.
         1. Boot the computer using the Snow Leopard Installer Disc or the Disc 1 that came
with your computer.  Insert the disc into the optical drive and restart the computer.
After the chime press and hold down the  "C" key.  Release the key when you see
a small spinning gear appear below the dark gray Apple logo.
         2. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue
button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
After DU loads select the hard drive entry from the left side list (mfgr.'s ID and drive
size.)  Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.  Set the number of
partitions to one (1) from the Partitions drop down menu, click on Options button
and select GUID, click on OK, then set the format type to MacOS Extended
(Journaled, if supported), then click on the Apply button.
         3. When the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed
with the OS X installation and follow the directions included with the installer.
         4. When the installation has completed your computer will Restart into the Setup
Assistant. Be sure you configure your initial admin account with the exact same
username and password that you used on your old drive. After you finish Setup
Assistant will complete the installation after which you will be running a fresh
install of OS X.  You can now begin the update process by opening Software
Update and installing all recommended updates to bring your installation current.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.
    Or you can:
Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:
    1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
        b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the
computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager
screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
Reinstall the 10.9.3 update: OS X Mavericks 10.9.3 Update (Combo).
    4. Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
Reinstall the 10.9.3 update: OS X Mavericks 10.9.3 Update (Combo).

  • How do I auto save all newly created contacts to a pre-determined group in Maverick? Could do this on iTunes, can't do it on iCloud...

    Hi,
Before upgrading to Maverick, I used to sync all my contacts via iTunes.
iTunes used to have an option to "Add contacts created outside of groups on this iPhone to: (drop-down)".
I had created a group called ' RECENTLY ADDED ', so that every time I saved a new number whilst meeting people / networking, etc, it would auto-save to that group. I would then sync via iTunes, and voila- all my new contacts would be in there.
As a marketer, I allocate my contacts into various complicated groups... so from there, I would proceed to move each contact into their relevant group, and then 'delete' from group (not delete completely). I would repeat this step until all contacts were moved out, leaving an empty 'recently added' group.
The next time i was out networking/saving new numbers, the process would repeat...
Now that I have upraded to Maverick and using iCloud syncing, I cannot find this feature.
The previous method I used worked brilliantly, and I do not always have time to add notes, etc (for a smart group) when saving new numbers.
I'm struggling to find a solution now that I'm using the iCloud syncing service...
Any suggestions to make it easy??

If the information is in iTunes on the computer you have synced with in the past another sync, being sure you select the items you want on the iphone, should copy those things back to the iPhone.

  • Mavericks - Unable to upload Keynote into iTunes U

I have a user who recently updated her OS to Mavericks.  Now whenever she tries to upload a Keynote presentation to iTunes U she gets the following error message.   Help??

    Thanks for your help Jim
I found some info in other threads and read that some people had re-downloaded, re-installed and were now working OK. Unfortunately some others went through that pain and still had the issue.
I found a reference to deleting the file 'iTunes Library.itl' and copying back the previous version of that file.
I tried this and when I fired up iTunes I noticed there was a window pop up saying iTunes was updating the database to version 11. I then re-imported the CD and now the songs are there in iTunes, the artwork is there and song titles etc. The songs play and everything appears normal again.
It would appear that my issue was the database was not correctly upgraded correctly durting the original upgrade, this theory is to some extent supported by the fact some people have had success re-installing version 11. This also suggests the upgrade process may be a little flaky.
Anyway thank you to the person suggesting downgrading the 'iTunes Library.itl' file, sorry I did not take a note of your name.

  • After upgrading to Maverick, I can no longer access iTunes Store.

    Hi,
After upgrading to Maverick, I can no longer access to iTunes stores. The layout for Mac AppStore also doesn't display properly. Perhaps the most annoying part is when I need to access secure website (even google.com), where I need to authorize the certificate. My current connection is behind proxy, but have no issues on all this issues before upgrading to Maverick. Please assist.

    Hello segordon21,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
To move voice memos to your computer please follow the steps from the iOS 8 Help below.
    Move recordings to your computer
You can sync voice memos with the iTunes library on your computer, then listen to them on your computer or sync them with another iPhone or iPod touch.
When you delete a synced voice memo from iTunes, it stays on the device where it was recorded, but is deleted from any other iPhone or iPod touch you synced. If you delete a synced voice memo on iPhone, it’s copied back to iPhone the next time you sync with iTunes, but you can’t sync that copy back to iTunes a second time.
Sync voice memos with iTunes. Connect iPhone to your computer, then in iTunes select iPhone. Select Music at the top of the screen (between Apps and Movies), select Sync Music, select “Include voice memos,” and click Apply.
Voice memos synced from iPhone to your computer appear in the Music list and in the Voice Memos playlist in iTunes. Voice memos synced from your computer appear in the Voice Memos app on iPhone, but not in the Music app.
    Move recordings to your computer
    Take care,
    Alex H.

  • Updated to Mavericks. Can't open my itunes now?

My hard drive on my MBP recently crashed, and I had to have it replaced. On the old OS X, I had to download Lion from the App store. When I rebooted my computer with the new hard drive, you have to use Mavericks. Well, I downloaded it, and went through all the steps. I even updated my computer before downloading mavericks so that all my applications would work.
Unfortunately my itunes won't open. It won't even try. No error code or anything. It just refuses to work. Is there a way to re-install itunes and get rid of the other one that doesn't work? Or do I have to re-install the entire OS X? I tried re-starting, and that did nothing. I even checked for more updates.

i know you probably have resolved the problem but others may have not. so in case someone else has this problem then try clicking on applications, then right click on itunes, then get info, then change all permissions to "read and write" you should be able to go about your way from there. but if that doesnt work this will for sure.
i had a problem similar to yours and better yet, i have the fix for it. i downloaded maverick 4 months ago and was without itunes ever since. all itunes icon did was bounce. itunes would never open and whats more, is when i would try to update it, i would get a "thank you for downloading itunes!" page , but the download would never work. so i scoured the net for solves. nothing that worked. <4 months later> then last night i took a new approach. i decided even though maverick would not allow me to uninstall itunes, i would find a way to uninstall itunes. then i would reinstall back to 11.1.5 i was successful and heres what i did. step one-Back up your iTunes Library.itl file, found under ~/Music/iTunes(even tho i didnt, i only had 3 artists in there at the time. and they didnt get erased but i advise you back up just in case.) step two-download itunes 10.7 from apple. i used this link Download it from Apple here(i pulled the link from Aarons website (awesometast.com). you download 10.7 however you want but i used the link above and have had no issues).although im not sure you need to do this step ( you may be able to download 11.1.5 itunes without 10.7, i did because i was following intructions fromhttp://awesometoast.com/downgrading-to-itunes-10-7-from-itunes-11-on-osx/)step 3-open Terminal step 4-enter in these 3 commands hitting return after each line. 1st line nothing seems to happen, 2nd line nothing seems to happen and 3rd line gives you a warning and requires password to continue. when i did it, my password didnt appear as i entered it and i hit return without looking, so i entered it in again, although im not sure i had to the 2nd time.
    killall iTunes
    killall "iTunes Helper"
    sudo rm -rf /Applications/iTunes.app/
step 5-drag off and dump the itunes icon (which now has the ? shadow in it) off your dock. step 6-install 10.7 itunes you downloaded earlier. (not sure if this part is neccesary. you may be able to just download 11.1.5 but i downloaded 10.7 because i was following Aarons steps.) itunes now works. step 7-go to apple and update to 11.1.5 itunes. install it. open it and you have itunes 11.1.5 in perfect working order. assuming you have a decent internet speed for the downloads, the whole process takes very little time. with those steps above, you can solve itunes just bouncing and not launching issues and also the "thank you for downloading" and nothing downloads issue. enjoy. also i would like to give a shout out to http://awesometoast.com and thank Aaron for the knowledge that enabled me to get itunes back into my life

  • Just upgraded my macbook pro to Mavericks, and I can't open iTunes. I get a message to "uncheck the 'use 32bit' Option". But it is uncheckd anyway!

I have just "upgraded" to Mavericks and cannot open iTunes. I get a message to uncheck the "Open in 32-bit mode" in the iTunes info window. It it is unchecked anyway. I've tried checking it, then unchecking it - still no go.
iTunes was working fine until the upgrade.
    Can anyone help?
    Thanks.

  • Mavericks - constantly asks password for iCloud, iTunes

Hello!  I recently installed Mavericks on my iMac.  Any software that is connected to iCloud (FaceTime, Messaging, Calendar, Contacts, etc.) constantly asks for my apple ID password.  iTunes is doing the same thing. Feel like I had a similar problem with Key Chain in my Mac Pro.

Try deleting the passwords from Keychain Access. While you are there, run Keychain First Aid.

  • Neighbors keep stealing my internet and resetting permissions - I know they are running Lion and I can't seem to stop them from resetting the wifi and firewall options in Maverick. It's killing my internet and driving me nuts.

Hi - I thougth I was crazy but after a full reinstall of Mavericks and I can still see the utility repair fixing problems I know my neighbors are stealing in internet and using it. They keep finding different ways to do it - the only way I know they are doing it is because when I login to the terminal it no longer uses my HD name but some long server looking name. I turned off my wifi and plugged it in directly. This time, after the reset, they modified my firewall permission and reset some ruby framework. I want to know how to stop this from happening. Please help.

More importantly, or at least as important, you must assign a strong password to your router's login. Service providers of DSL and cable have finally wised up and their routers now come with a preassigned and difficult to guess admin password, but not all. Right now, I'm certain it's at a default. Check the manual for your router, but it's probably something like:
    Admin: admin
    Password:
Sometimes it's the other way around. The admin name is blank, and the password is simply "admin".
Do this. From Safari, type this into the URL/search field at the top:
    192.168.0.1
and press Enter. If the defaults are as simple as what I've shown here, that's how they keep getting back in so easily. All anyone has to do is be in range of your wireless signal, type in this same IP address and get into your router settings by using these uselessly easy to bypass admin name and password settings.
Once into your router's settings, they can see what you've changed the wireless login password to, and just login again. What you need to do more than anything is keep them out of your router's settings.
Go into the router's settings as I described using 192.168.0.1 in Safari. Find the wireless settings and turn all wireless off so no one is getting a signal. This will keep them out while you change things.
    1) Change the router's wireless security to WPA2.
    2) Change the wireless password to a new, hard to guess password as steve359 showed. Long, random, obnoxious passwords are best. At least 16 characters long.
    3) Now, go to the admin login page and give the login password an equally long and difficult password. Remember to do all of this with wireless broadcasting OFF, or they will be able to watch everything you're doing.
    4) Now turn wireless access back on. They will no longer able to login to your router to see your wireless access password. Not unless they manage to guess a very hard long and difficult password.
Make sure to write these passwords down so you can get back into the router without manually resetting it.

  • Why has Apple killed off iTunes Match on OS X 10.5.8

Take a look at the enclosed screenshot.
As you can see, 25 days ago I was happily enjoying my 6,000+ tracks in iTunes Match.  When I configured this some time ago, the minimum iTunes Match requirements stated online  by Apple were PowerBook G4, 1 GHz, iTunes 10.6.3, and OS X 10.5.8.
Sometime in the last several weeks, Apple has broken this, either by design or by accident.  I also see that now they have revised the online requirements page to now call for OS X 10.6.8. I have spent days trying to troubleshoot this.  From what I have tested, iTunes Match can review local music, send it to ITM, carry out the ITM processing, and then indicates it is downloading the tracks list to the PowerBook.  Thing is, all of the 6,000+ tracks in my ITM library have vanished.  (They're still out there, because i can access them through iOS.)
What kind of a way to run a railroad is this?  Sneak in changes and see if any one squeals?  This is really frustrating.
    Can anyone help?

  • Itunes 7.4.1 update has killed my iTunes store & airTunes

I'm a bit stumped by this one. Yesterday I followed the prompt to update to iTunes 7.4. This morning when I came back to my computer my airTunes speakers weren't connected (first thing I noticed) and then I realised that the iTunes store won't connect either. The error message I get upon trying to connect is:
*iTunes could not connect to the iTunes Store. The network connection was refused.*
Now, I'm not stupid, so this to me sounds like a pretty obvious firewall issue. However the only firewall I have turned on is the standard Windows XP one and it has an exception for iTunes (and one for Bonjour). In fact I've ever tried turning that firewall off completely and it makes no difference. The error message comes up instantaneously, so it seems as if iTunes isn't even trying to connect to anything.
After noticing that iTunes 7.4.1 had been sneaked out overnight I wondered whether this was a known issue with 7.4.0, and updated. Sadly, it was to no avail.
    Any ideas?

actually, scratch that - I fixed it.
    Apparently ZoneAlarmPro was running hidden.

  • Very close to killing myself (Itunes not working)

I recently downloaded the new verzion of Itunes and when I installed it, Itunes refused to open. The hour glass runs for a few seconds but nothing happens. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling several times with no success. I also tried to use msconfig to find a conflict.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302538
This appeared to help as Itunes worked for a little while but then Itunes shut down and wouldn't reopen. Now, when I run msconfig and restart, I get to listen to a few seconds of a song, but Itunes eventually closes. It appears to happen whenever I open another program (for instance when I click on My Documents, Itunes shuts down).
Any help would be greatly apperciated. I want my Itunes!

I am having exactly the same problem. I noticed when I close down the computer that itunes is running and will not close down, so I have to push end program. This is even though I cannot see itunes on the screen and it doesn't appear to load. I did reinstall prior to trying to load it just in case.
I am not reinstalling completely, when I try to reinstall it says it is 'fixing' previous problems. Should I uninstall and reinstall completely? Will that harm my song library?

Ok, so I tried to put my itunes music on an external drive ... I messed it up terribly and have ended up DELETING my entire itunes from my machine!! Totally ridiculous I know! Idiotic even but hey!!
Anyway I still have all of my music and photos etc on my Ipod ... Someone please tell that I can some how get this back on my machine!! I have reinstalled Itunes but obviously when I connect my Ipod it just offers to erase everythin for me and start from scratch ... how very kind!

    Try Senuti.
It's a program that transfers music from iPod to iTunes on a Mac.
    As is Music Rescue.
There's also a similar program called Yamipod which has a Mac version.
I've used all of these on a Mac with great success.
If you want to retrieve playlists, iPodRip has the feature enabling you to reconstruct them.
If you copied photos to your iPod using the full resolution option, enable disk use, open your iPod in Finder, open the photos folder then open the "full resolution" folder and drag the photos out of that folder to your desktop. For enabling disk use look here.
    Disk Use.
If you only copied the photos as thumbnails, you can't do this so you'll need a program such as this one.
iPod Photo Liberator. (both Mac and Windows versions available)
Photos as thumbnails won't be of the original quality when copied back to your computer.

    kac-chick,
I am not qualified to talk you through the process (hopefully someone who is will reply), but I do think there is a way to mount your iPod as an external disk. While that won't allow you to recover the playlist organization of iTunes, it might be possible to at least recover the mp3 files themselves. If so, you could import them into the new (blank) version of iTunes, and then recreate the playlists manually.
I may be wrong -- but I hope not. For a fact the songs are on your iPod -- you know this because you can still play them! -- it is just that they can't be accessed in the usual way that files are accessed on an externally mounted disk. I suspect this is because of concerns that Apple has about copyright violations arising from people exchanging the songs on each other's iPods by copying them into their respective iTunes libraries. So things are set up to allow you to easily transfer songs from iTunes to the iPod (by synching), but not the other way around.
Anyway, hopefully someone with more knowledge can give you a more complete explanation of how to do it. But if it were me, I would start by trying to get iTunes to let me mount the iPod as an external disk. Then I would explore the directory structure to try to find the iTunes library with all the songs. These may be invisible or even encrypted. If the former, you can potentially get around it. If the latter, probably not, at least not without sending it to Apple.
But I agree with your sentiment. There ought to be some way to do it -- after all, this has to be a common problem (indeed some of the updates to iTunes have had the effect of deleting or corrupting the user's previous iTunes library), and we know the songs are still there on the iPod. At least they are unless you synched your iPod to the new iTunes, in which case it may have deleted all the old songs because they don't exist in the new iTunes library. But even then, file recovery utilities might be able to recover the mp3 files, just as they can when you accidentally put something in the trash and delete it by mistake.
    Good luck!

  • 10.5.2 "killed" my iTunes

    Hi!
I installed the update as soon as I saw it was available today.
After the reboot I noticed that iTunes didn't run properly.
When I start iTunes doesn't show up, altough I can start songs via right click or by pressing play button on my keyboard.
I went to the iTunes folder in Music and removed it (made a back up of course), tried it again, and voila, iTunes starts, however, since all settings and my library is gone, my well organized library, and all my playlists are missing.
    What should I do?
I really don't want to do it all over again.
My iTunes Library file is 34,6MB
    and the XML is 26,5MB
I'd imagine that it's the size of the files that is causing it.
Please help, any suggestions are welcome!
    Sincerely
    Per

Put everything back where you found it. Reinstall the 10.5.2 update from the standalone updater, and also download itunes standalone installer, and reinstall.
