Mavericks 10.9.1-Problem with finder not showing peripheral hardware

After upgrading to Mavericks (10.9.1) my Finder doesn't show new hardware in Devices. For example, Finder not showing iPod when i plug into the keyboard's usb. i have other examples of the same problem, such as trying to find a hard drive detached from an old computer. anyone know if i can configure Finder to show all peripheral (hardware) devices? maybe i need to plug the peripherals into back of the iMac rather thatn into my keyboard usb (which i have not tried.) I had a similar issue as you did -- for a few weeks now I've been suffering through agonizingly slow Contacts performance.
The way I resolved it was:
1) Quit Contacts
2) Go to system preferences and go into iCloud, then uncheck contacts -- choosing to delete from mac.
3) Go into system preferences and to Internet Accounts and again uncheck contacts under any of the accounts it's enabled on (gmail, yahoo, etc).
4) Go to your user's library folder (easiest way is to open a finder window, hold down the option key on the keyboard and from the Go menu, select Library).
5) Delete anything referring to Address book or com.apple.address book....   -- check these folders in particular:
     - Address Book
     - Application Support
     - Caches
     - Preferences
6) Restart your computer
7) Go back into System preferences and enable contacts from wherever you want (iCloud, etc.)
8) If it's not quite enabling (appears to enable, but checkbox doesn't show), then do one more restart of the computer.
9) Now open Contacts and allow it to sync

I just updated my iphone 3g to the 4.0.1 and i went into my pictures n half of them show up black in the album. but u can still click on them and seee them full screen. Is there anyway to fix the problem with the pictures showing up as black in the album?

If this is for the photo albums that were transferred from your computer, under the Photos tab for your iPhone sync preferences with iTunes, deselect Sync Photos followed by syncing which will remove all photos on your iPhone that were transferred from your computer. Follow this by reselecting Sync Photos and selecting the photos you want transferred to your iPhone followed by a sync.
If no change after this, the next step is deleting what is called the iPod Photo Cache from your computer followed by another sync.

Problem with thumbnails not showing

I am having a problem with thumbnails of psd files showing up in the Organizer for PSE 9 for mac. I get a picture of a ripped file in place of the thumbnail. If i bring that file into the editor I can see it fine, it just won't show me a thumbnail in the Organizer.

Hi,
Select the images in which you are not getting the thumbnails, then EDIT>Update thumbnail.
It should update the thumbnails.
If the issue is still there
Go to the catalog location (to see the catalog location, Click HELP>SYSTEM info>Catalog location)
Here you will find a file called thumb.5.cache, rename it to thumb_OLD.5.cache or move it to desktop.
Relaunch the PSE it will recreate the thumb.5.cache and hopefully it resolve the issue.

I had a problem with firefox not showing up when I tried to open it. So I uninstalled it and reinstalled. After reinstallation my computer tells me the file is corrupt and I still can't open it. Other browsers work fine.

Mozilla Firefox has worked fine for several years. Beginning two days ago I would click on the desktop icon, I would see the little whirling circle for about 1 second and then nothing would happen. Later when I shut down the computer, suddenly I would see the mozilla firefox page come up for an instant and then shut down. The computer was telling me that it was open, but I couldn't see the home page or use it. Then I decided to try uninstalling it and reinstalling. The uninstall went fine. But after downloading the latest version, which my antivirus program told me was safe, the computer refused to install the executable program, telling me it was corrupt. I have already lost all my bookmarks, etc. It looks like my only solution is to use another browser. However I really prefer Mozilla. Any suggestions?

Do a clean (re)install and delete the Firefox program folder (C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\).
Download a fresh Firefox copy and save the file to the desktop.

Uninstall your current Firefox version, if possible.
*Do NOT remove personal data when you uninstall the current version or you lose your bookmarks and other data because all profile folders will be removed.
Remove the Firefox program folder before installing that newly downloaded copy of the Firefox installer.
*It is important to delete the Firefox program folder to remove all the files and make sure that there are no problems with files that were leftover after uninstalling.

Your bookmarks and other profile data are stored elsewhere in the Firefox Profile Folder and won't be affected by a reinstall, but make sure that you do not select to remove personal data if you uninstall Firefox.

Problems with page not showing up in Internet Explorer

I uploaded my page. All was fine. Looked good in all
browsers.

Now all of a sudden my index.htm page (also have default.htm
page) shows up as a black screen only no pictures. No words.
All of the sub pages show up fine if you add that to the
address. Just the Index. is not showing up in Internet Explorer.
Looks good in Firefox, Netscape and Safari.

Not sure why you would have an index.htm and a default.htm
both really
aren't needed.

Problem with Mail not showing new messages

Since 2 weeks, my Mail does not show any of my 'hotmail' messages receive. The connection diagnosis said there are no problem with the account and server. It seems to download incoming mail (which also show in hotmail) but Mail does not show any new messages.

Back up all data.
Select the problem mailbox in the mailbox list, then select
Mailbox ▹ Rebuild
from the menu bar.

Problems with finder not loading

Does anyone know how I would go about getting the installation discs replaced for my powerbook G4? I have been trying to look through apple's website, but I could not find information about how to replace the installation discs if they are lost/unavailable. I think they were misplaced in the process of moving but I don't know where to go to get news ones or if they are really necessary.
The computer froze up a few days ago in the middle of a download of music to my ipod and when I restarted the computer, the finder would not load, including the bar across the top, desktop items (Mac HD included), and the trashcan. The dock still loads, however, all but three or four programs shut down immediately upon opening.
If anyone thinks there might be a different option than reinstalling/repair, suggestions are welcome! If not, do you know where I can get new discs?

You can call AppleCare Support to get a set of replacement disks. Last I heard, they did charge $50-$60 though...
If your PowerBook really shipped with Mac OS X 10.2.x, then you could buy a retail copy of Mac OS X 10.3 (Panther) or Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger) and use the Disk Utility on that disk to attempt to repair your hard drive and/or do a reinstall of Mac OS X. However, the retail copy of Mac OS X won't include any additional applications (like iLife) that may have come with your PowerBook.

Day/Week view problem with times not showing

When I view the Day or Week option I do not get the times listed. Where the times should be it has "Sat PM" and "Sat AM" (the AM and PM are in the right place but all the times have been replaced with "Sat").
I have trashed all my plist files and started again. Restarted my computer etc. Any idea's how to fix this ?

I played with this a bit, and IMHO his is a nasty bug. The times should show per preferences. I find that if I change any of the time preferences, the times disappear completely in iCal.
sigh I set the Region format for Japan, so I guess I'll have to live with a 24-hour clock.

Problem with icons not showing up using stacks.

In my dock, I have a folder that contains movies and when I click it, it opens using the 'fan' effect in Stacks.
The movies are .avi. My only problem is certain icons do not appear. They remain a simple QuickTime Logo on a white looking film strip.
Below is a picture describing what it looks like.

As far as I know as of yesterday, they were all displaying their respectable icons. Now they are not.
Can anyone offer me some advice on how to get them to display their proper images again?

Sounds like a hosed LaunchServices database. Launch the Terminal app in /Applications/Utilities/, copy this one-line command into the window that pops up, hit the return key, quit the Terminal app, and restart:

Iphone 4s problems with names not showing up

When i get incoming calls the names don't show up but with txt messages the names show up........ I need some help here please

The number with the contact has to match the information sent via caller ID exactly. If it does not, then it will not display the name. Check the contact name and number and see if they match. If they do and it is still not working, the first step in user troubleshooting is restart. Power the phone off and then back on. If that does not do it, then try a reset. Hold the sleep/wake and home buttons together until you see the Apple logo and then release. After the phone restarts, check again.

Problems with tv not showing up with 5900xt

Alright i have a msi 5900xt and up until recently, i could use the video out to watch dvd's on my tv. I only use the reference drivers from nvidia and have tried the 53.03, 56.62, and the 56.72. It used to work perfectly with the 53.03's and now i get nothing. My tv isn't showing up at all and i have checked all cables for proper insertion and they are all fine. I am confused on this one and have run out of possible fixes. please help if you can.

I tried that and now i have the option to output to a tv, it just isn't showing up on the tv. I have an s-video cable running into the video 2 on my tv from my vid card. So here is what i do, to no avail, I turn the tv to vid 2 and then change my output device to the tv. The monitor goes blank but the tv stays blank too. then after it switches back to the monitor again, i can see what i am doing, just not on the tv.

I have a problem, as soon as I install xquartz, Finder has troubles showing files in SOME folders.
With terminal, all files are there and the permissions also look ok!
As soon as I remove xquartz, it seems to work fine again, but I need it as I want to play around with SPINE.
As it is a problem with finder, not with xquartz I wanted to ask around for help here.
I tried the following:
- kill and relaunch Finder
- disk utility > repair permissions
- moved com.apple.finder.plist

(using Win2000) when given an absolute pathname;
here is the rough code:

No that can't be it; he takes the filename from the command line, so escaping isn't an issue (unless he used a shell that unescaped '\\' for him, but I think he's using the win2000 cmd shell).
Dunno, I have no idea of your filesystem or shell. Just do some debugging, around the lines of:
File f = new File(theFile);
if (f.exists()) {
