Mavericks 10.9-10.9.1 bug/issue/problem: external drives connected through thunderbolt or firewire are not put to sleep when iMac goes to sleep
Previous to Mavericks (10.9 - 10.9.1) I've had no issues with external firewire or thunderbolt connected drives to be put to sleep. However, since Mavericks all of my external drives are not put to sleep when my iMac, or Mac Pro go to sleep.
How can a company such as Apple, pushing people to have external devices like hard drives, is not on top of fixing this issue? Apple pushed for firewire and thunderbolt, thus All external drives I've owned are firewire. Because of speed. I bought thunderbolt adapters for firewire, and before Mavericks all worked great. Now that we have 10.9.1 update, this is still an issue!
I'm aware of the temporary solution of connecting the drive through USB to make it work, this is not a solution, but a hack.
Please let Apple know that this is a known issue, and there should be a fix for it. Everyone's data depends on it! Not only current external backups, but also external sensitive hard drives we rely on. Currently, the following makes are experiencing this issue: Lacie, OWC (Elite Pro), WD, Promise, Seagate, Toshiba, G-Drive.

If anyone finds how to solve this issue, please help by posting the steps or solution.
Same 2 issues with 10.9.3:
External FireWire drive WILL NOT spin down when Mac goes to sleep.
also
External FireWire drive WILL NOT spin down for inactivity despite “Put hard disks to sleep when possible” is checked in energy saver.
This has been going on since the launch of Mavericks and no solution found yet.
USB ports work normally.

XI adapter polling issue & JDBC / DB2 driver connection timeout properties
Hello Group,
We have a long running issue with our XI 7.0 system running on iseries. (V5R3) The issue occuring is that our XI adapters stop polling and the only resolution is to restart the J2EE engine or to resart the adapter framework services.
We have had several OSS messages open on this subject for over a year and are going round in circles with the a number of different SAP consultants.
The one topic that we keep coming back to is that we are being asked to set DB2 driver connection timeout properties. We are using the toolbox driver and have upated to the latest JTopen driver, but have not managed to find any inofrmation on how to set the timeout parameter. Does anyone know where the timeout parameter set?
Has anyone experienced polling issue like this before and how did you resolve?
SAP referred to the SAP note 1078420 - XI/PI JDBC Adapter: Setting JDBC driver properties for DB which is for Oracle, but this will give an idea of what timeout parameters SAP are asking about.
Extract of the note is below:-
Symptom
This note gives an option to set JDBC driver properties while acquiring a DB connection. When connecting to DB using JDBC adapter there are instances
where DB connection take a long time to establish connection. Some times call made to Driver will hang permanently. Setting driver properties would resolve this problem.
More Terms
Connection timeout, time out, query timeout
Cause and Prerequisites
Solution
In the advanced mode table section of sender channel and receiver channel configurations, we can set driver properties for each DB connection. Any
such property would have to contain prefix 'driver:'(with out quotes) For example, for Oracle Database JDBC thin driver 10.2.0.3 version, the
property oracle.jdbc.ReadTimeout helps to set read timeout while reading from the socket. Also for setting login time out in Oracle, we use
oracle.net.CONNECT_TIMEOUT. To set these two properties use as follows:
driver:oracle.jdbc.ReadTimeout 1000
driver:oracle.net.CONNECT_TIMEOUT 1000
(The TimeOut Driver properties like ReadTimeout and CONNECT_TIMEOUT are in milliseconds)
Refer to your DB documentation/ JDBC driver documentation on this. Please note that properties can vary from each driver version. For instance, some
of properties of Oracle JDBC thin Driver 10.2.0.3 properties may not be present in older version drivers. Please contact DB vendor for the complete
list of driver properties. In addition to above, we also provide another parameter for query time out.
sqlquerytimeout (prefix 'driver:' is not required) is the parameter that is to be used for SQL query time out. This is case-sensitive and should be
configured as positive integer value in seconds(greater than 0).
Any help on this would be much appreciated.
With regards,
StevenHello,
I am not talking about the XI timeouts. But the timeouts which can be used to get the connection timeouts for DB2/AS400 databases.
So please provide that information.
THanks,
soorya -
iMac goes to sleep/hibernate multiple times per day after installing Maverick OS. Moving the mouse or hitting the spcaebar will not wake the pc.
I have to shutdown and power back on. My iMac was purchased in January 2011 and no longer in warrenty. The energy saver 'sleep' and 'display' settings are set at 10 minutes. When I changed to 'never' the machine got very hot and I changed the settings back. I have checks by: Put hard disk to sleep when possible and wake for network access. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test. -
Flash CS4 Bug saving to external drive?
I discovered last week when teaching my Flash class that in saving FLAs to my USB drive, and THEN testing/publishing, the AS3 code was ignored in the resulting SWF?EXE files. I duplicated the situation with multiple computers, mutliple external drives and multiple FLA files. I even tried it at differnt locations (home and campus). The problem is only related to CS4 with Actionscipt 3. Both CS3/AS3 and CS4/AS2 test/compile as one would expect. Save the CS4/AS3 file to the internal C: drive and then test/publish everything works fine. Go figure! WHy would the save location make any difference? I thought perhaps it was a PATH environment variable issue, but putting the external drive path in the PATH statement caused no effect.
Here's the information I'm providing to my class tonight. Anyone else encountering the same? BTW, I upgraded to release 10.0.2 but to no avail.
THE PROBLEM:
I think I discovered a pretty major bug in Flash CS4. When creating an ActionScript 3 file (with scripts written on the timeline) and saving the FLA source to an external drive (such as a USB thumb drive) and then testing (Control > Test Movie) or publishing (File > Publish), the AS3 code is ignored in the resulting SWF or EXE. If you save the file to the C: drive and then test/publish, it works fine. I tried this on several computers with several different FLA files and differing script, with several devices including a network drive – all with the same result.
I posted the problem to the ActionScript forum at adobe.com and contacted tech support (via email) but have yet to receive any useful feedback.
SOLUTIONS:
OPTION 1: Save your FLA to the hard drive before testing. You can create a temporary folder on the desktop of the campus computers or should have access to C:\TEMP. So save your files there and at the end of you session, be sure to copy the files (both the FLA and any published files) to your USB for safekeeping. When updating your FLA, first copy it to the internal C: hard drive, then make changes and test, etc.
OPTION 2: AS3 code written to an external .AS file does work when compiled. But this really is beyond the scope of this class and adds a lot of complexity.
OPTION 3: Use Flash CS3 – works fine in CS3, but of course you can’t use any of the cool new CS4 features such as new motion tweening, and inverse kinematics (IK bone structures).Susan,
Would the File > Archive Project do what you want?

Issue with SPA525g registation and FXO port call calls are not disconnecting properly
Hi,
I have a UC540 and updated it to the latest IOS version with the latest firmware to my phones and i am having registration problems with SPA525g IP Phones. I updated the firmware of the phones as well and create manual tftp bindings with but still it is not registering. I run a couple of debugs (debug tftp events and debug ephone registration) I can see from the logs and in the phone that it is taking the proper VLAN and being discovered via CDP and being pointed to the TFTP server and still wont register. I can see that it is also taking its own .cnf file properly then the output sccp token regected invalid devices error is shown I have a SPA502G and it is working fine. Also there is a previous issue that all the voice port are shown as engage or offhook even the calls are disconnected thus make the main PSTN number busy am based in UAE and our service provider is etisalat I have check with them about the proper disconnection values but still it the same. That's why I have arrived in the conclusion to just update everything including the IOS and the phones firmware. I have put my config in this post, I am also trying to take the CCNA Voice exam on the 2nd week of april and I think that if i don't know how fix this issue for our customer then I would probably fail that exam. any suggestion and help is greatly appreciated cisco experts.

Some of the output are not shown becaus it is to long I have attach the whole config for reference and any advice on how could I optimize and resolve my issues is greatly appreciated. ThanksNicolo - First off this stuff gets crazy sometimes. No worries about the exam. Sometimes when FXO ports go crazy it is due to battery reversal. If you go to the FXO port settings try turning battery reversal on and or off... depending on its current setting. See if that helps.
As for the 525s not registering.. These are inside the network correct? Are you connecting one directly to the UC500 with a Cat5E or Cat6 patch cable and the same thing happens? Does the MAC address on the phone match a MAC address under the EPHONE settings?
If you telnet into the UC500 can you execute a "dir" command at the CLI prompt and "CD" (change directory) into the phones folder and then the spa525g folder? Do files exist in there?
Also I only see an IP address under BVI100? This is the voice side of things what happened to the IP address under BVI1 (Data VLAN). Can you give us some information about the internal network? Cna you PING this phone system from the network? What IP address does it have? -
IMac goes to sleep unexpectedly, Finder issues with flash drives - related?
My iMac falls asleep for no known reason, often in the middle of active use. (Similar problem recently described in thread with messageID=11829917.)
Sleep onset is frequent but seems to vary based on both currently-running software and attached devices (particularly USB flash drives). It will almost always wake up when I hit the space bar afterward, but might sleep again within a minute or two, then not for an hour or more. The sleep occurs with little notice (brief stall of display, sometimes enough time to click on another app window and bring that forward before the screen goes dark), and 95% of the time the computer wakes up after hitting the spacebar. The other 5 % of the time the display reappears but the entire OS is frozen and usually requires unplugging the power cable. There are other symptoms in the Finder - more below. Once in a while the fan revs up like a WWII fighter plane taking off from a carrier, but this is unusual and all the really irritating stuff also happens without this symptom, which usually stops on its own. Immediately after reawakening error messages are displayed to report that flash drives were improperly disconnected (Tell me about it! This has been the case for several months whether the computer goes to sleep by itself or if I put it there manually.)
The computer seems to go into sleep mode most frequently when not-particularly-demanding graphics (Photoshop Elements and Adobe Reader) and video (QuickTime Pro 7.6.4) apps are running. Turning these off makes nod-offs less frequent but doesn't stop it entirely. When video thumbnails are displayed in Finder windows a lot of time may be required to load the data and this often paralyzes everything else AND this also seems to be a trigger for a nod-off (i.e. QuickTime not necessary to make the computer choke). This is highly variable and some video clips load quickly (< 20 sec), while others take several minutes, and this doesn't necessarily correlate with file size.
Another factor is whether flash drives are connected - these seem to make the nod-offs more frequent AND Finder regularly loses communication to these both while just sitting there and also in the middle of file transfers. A very early 250 MB drive (Lexar - vintage 2004) will always communicate, but different USB2-capable drives all are either unreliable (Lexar 8 GB and KData 4 GB both < 1 yr old) or apparently dead (Lexar 2 GB ~ 2 yr old). The failures may be damaging the drives - they are inconsistent-to-bad at communicating with my MacBook Pro. I know this sounds like the drives are at fault, but there are things which make me suspect the OS (both computers use the same version): 1) different flash drives display the same on-again-off-again behavior AND the 2) the 2 GB drive that hasn't communicated with my Macs in over a month has no trouble talking with my wife's WinXP computer. When communication isn't working with these drives, they do not show up in either Finder or Disk Utility. When the Mac-dead 2 GB Lexar is plugged into either computer and I launch Disk Utility, the initial scan for drives never finishes so I have to force quit. (When they are working, on the iMac the large drives only appear in Finder if I go to User and press Command-uparrow (to go up a directory layer) - in columns display mode nothing appears in the left-hand column.
(The following describes a set of problems I've had a little longer and which may or may not be related):
At times the Finder loses some but not all functions:
1) Sometimes files in the Trash can't be ejected* even when all apps are turned off
2) usually when problem 1) is observed, no keyboard commands work: nothing happens when pressing Command-W, Command-uparrow or Command-N to open a new window. Text typed will not be entered to change filenames (but this can still be done by typing the desired text in TextEdit, copying there and selecting and pasting with mouse commands.)
<* I have downloaded an app for forcing file deletion, but haven't really needed it - the delete option and keyboard commands all return after shutdown and reboot, and there's usually enough annoying stuff going on by this time that that seems the best thing to do.>
Things which I've tried to fix it with so far (not in this order):
- blowing dust out of the back with canned air
- checking temperatures - CPU/GPU showing 72/73, HD bay 51, etc.
- fixing permissions from normal boot
- boot from install disk and running extended hardware test (no problems found during scans repeated several times during the past month)
- fixing permissions and running Disk First Aid from install disk boot
- getting files off the hard drive (was as low as 3 GB free space, currently ~ 35 GB and climbing)
- clearing PRAM
- resetting system manager (name? - hold down power button when reconnecting power cable, etc.)
- Power Saver display and computer auto sleep are shut off (both on "never" - I regularly put it to sleep manually)
- virus scans (Clam XAV)
I realize that this is a kitchen sink collection of symptoms, but these things may be related and if so, OS developers may want to be sure these problems are avoided in current versions. (Yes I will upgrade my OS soon...)Thanks for checking in, Miriam - sorry to get testy about it.
The iMac's RAM is maxed out (2.5 GB)
Yes, the system log does report overtemp message to Power management prior to shutdown (today's log at end of post)
Where do I find normal temperatures for the system? What are the important parameters to watch and what sort of fixes are possible?
iStat currently shows:
HD 54° CPU 67° GPU 72° Incoming air 38° (???)
HD bay 54° GPU ambient 71° opt drive 49°
==========================================
Console.log was largely full of stuff about a bad flash drive I stuck in as a Hail Mary and failure of communication with a scanner (old HP, driver package installs a program which starts at launch which doesn't show up under Startup Items. Apparently the permission got mislaid, so I fixed permissions and this seems OK now. (Only included that because some of it shows up in System.log and it's not worth focusing on.)
[That all said, there is a software/OS component to the problem and it is graphics-related. The other night I was looking at some flash videos in a series and one in particular repeatedly caused shutdown, while others played normally: domain = jebhost.com /youtube/list.php?q=Henry+8.o&Submit=GO "The Tricycle Thief" only played through once out of about six tries.]

Issue w/external drive that was once an internal main drive
I recently replaced the hard drive in my Powerbook G4 and planned to use the previous hard drive as an external drive, but I’m having difficulty with the drive being recognized. All the external case does is blink. Doesn't even whirl. I’ve used Disk Utility with no luck, but when I plug the drive into a Windows machine it does physically recognize the drive, it just can’t read it (likely due to having OS installed). Do I need to set the jumpers to slave on the old drive for it to be recognized on the Powerbook? Is there an issue with both the internal and external drives both having Mac OS installed?
Thanks in advance for the help!
-DavidAssuming you put the drive into a bus-powered USB enclosure, the problem is that your Powerbook, like most or all PB G4s, doesn't put out enough power via the USB port to operate the drive fully. It will spin, but the heads won't move. There are four remedies:
1. Use a USB "Y" cable that enables the drive to draw power from two USB ports instead of just one. Here is one example.
2. Connect an AC adapter to the drive to power it, if it has a port for one.
3. Connect an AC-powered USB hub to the computer, and connect the drive to the hub.
4. Replace the USB enclosure with a FireWire enclosure and connect the drive to your FireWire port, which provides more power than the USB ports do. -
Networking issues following upgrade to 10.5.8 when iMac wakes from sleep
Hello,
I recently upgraded to 10.5.8 and I'm now experiencing issues with network connectivity following the iMac waking from sleep. I have to stop Airport and then start it again to resolve the issue.
Can you provide any resolutions to this or advice?
Many Thanks,
SamReinstall the Mac OS X 10.5.8 Combo Update because the Combo seems to help a lot of people when a Delta upgrade doesn't take right.

Issues with external drive on Mac Mini / Lion
I'm using an external SATA drive in a Newer Technologies Voyager dock (which I like to call the "toaster") with a brand new Mac Mini i5 2.3G via FW800.
The drive was formatted using Disk Utility on a G4 running Tiger (10.4.11)
With the drive mounted, the Mini's performance seems to slow down, and it randomly dismounts the drive, with the usual warning, "you disconnected your drive without dismounting it first, bla bla...)
I think I remember when Leopard was new, there was a firmware issue that had to be dealt with, and when moving drives from OS 9 to X and back to 9, I lost access to the data on the drive.
I'm also aware of the partitioning scheme difference when formatting drives for use on the Intel machines.
Could either of the above have anything to do with the problem I'm having here?I'm not an expert in this, but as far as I know, GUID only comes into play if you want to boot from it, but...... you never know, it could - here is an excerpt from Disk Utility:
If you’ll be using the disk only with Mac computers, choose GUID Partition Table.
Another thought is: how old is that drive? All hard drives fail sooner or later - have you tried to check it with Disk Utility or something like Disk Warrior? -
FireWire issues with external drive in Yosemite
I have just upgraded to OS X Yosemite, and I have an annoying problem with my 500GB FireWire external drive (which I use for Time Machine backups).
Basically, after updating the drive won't show up anymore, neither in the Finder nor in the Disk Utility. I also tried the "diskutil list" command in the Terminal, but it is nowhere to be found. Note that the drive does indeed receive power from the port - it spins - and when I look into System Report --> Hardware --> FireWire it does show up there (but I can't mount it). Furthermore, if I use a USB cable to connect the drive everything works fine, so the disk itself seems to be OK.
The funny thing is that if I boot with the drive plugged in the FireWire port the system mounts it normally. But as soon as I eject the drive, I am unable to mount it again (unless I switch to the USB cable, as mentioned above).
Prior to the update, everything worked flawlessly. For now, I backed up my Mac via USB 2.0, but it's very slow and I definitely don't want to resort to this workaround everytime. And it goes without saying that I don't like having issues with my primary backup device in general.
I already did all the usual troubleshooting (rebooting, resetting NVRAM and SMC, ...), but the problem still persists.
Any suggestion?I had the same issue on a rMBP 13'', brand new 2015 March.
Two thunderbolt adapter connected: one for ethernet, one for firewire Lacie drive.
and...
even after taking the ext. Firewire on the Spotlight exclude list, and also after disabling sleeping hard drives, I always got the issue.
Until I realized that touching the laptop or moving the screen was immediately leading to disconnection.
Then I exchanged the thunderbolt connectors, and now it is stable and does not disconnect again.
??? Maybe one of the ports is more "delicate" than the other?
Big hardware weakness here... -
Why does OSX 10.9 Mavericks try to log me out when it goes to sleep?
After I wake my Mac from sleep it displays a message saying that it couldn't log out because one or more of my Adobe apps or Quickbooks app that were open couldn't close properly. I don't want them to close, nor do I want the machine to log out every time it goes to sleep. Any ideas for a solution?
Thanks!Ok. Finally found it. In System Preferences > Security & Privacy : General - Click on the Advanced button in the bottom right and you will get these options. Uncheck the "Log out after __ minutes of inactivity" and I think that solved my issue. Thanks again VikingOSX

USB issues with External Drive
I am running a 1 TB Fantom drive (MDC1000) (2 Partitions) on new OS 10.5.6 MacPro via one of the back USB ports. Been using the drive for over a year with no problems.
Now intermittent issue with mounting drive. After successfully mounting and letting the drive cycle down, the USB2 connection disconnects when the drive starts back up again. I receive the Device Removal Message, then the drive tries to remount. Then I receive the message again. What is strange is that the drive seems to work fine when data is being accessed consistently.
I clicked off the "put the hard disc to sleep" checkbox in the Energy Saver preference which seemed to stabilize the intermittent problem, but now there is an issue with the machine not coming out of sleep, and I get the startup clock icon when I try to restart. The machine does not shut down with the USB connected.
I'm still trying to determine if it's the drive or the machine. I ran the disc utility and repaired the disc as the intermittent disconnections seem to corrupt the trees and directories. I am able to fix them. Is there any utility for testing the USB ports? There should BE.
Could this be due to a recent update? Or lack of firmware update from the drive manufacturer? Seemed to come out of nowhere.
Thanks for any info.

Tried new cables and seemed better for a short time, but then still would not mount successfully.
I called Micronet after I didn't hear back via their email form. The tech there seemed to suspect it was the power connection on the network card in the drive which would make some sense. He confirmed there were no firmware upgrades for the Fantom drive.
Also tried to mount the drive unsuccessfully via Firewire and it did not work.
So my conclusion is that it's not the drive mechanism but the network card in the drive. I have a sinking suspicion that there is a power issue in my office space, which may have affected the drive. I've had other machines and devices which have had power issues in the past.
Does anyone know any simple and easy way to test electrical integrity in a work/office environment?
I bought another 2tb drive, transferred the data and reformatted the old drive to see if that does anything. -
Mail on Maverick is very problematic since latest upgrade. One day it works other day it doesn't, especially with gmail. I don't change any settings but one day it will work and the other it will not. What give? All updates are installed....

Directory Issues on External Drive?
I have a Mercury Elite Pro 160GB external drive, and sometimes it won't mount. Disk Utility and DiskWarrior say there's no problem.
If there's corruption, does using Disk Utility to erase the drive also rewrite a new Directory? A Mac tech told me that only Repartitioning will truly delete/write a new Directory. Don't know if that's true.
The drive won't mount half the time. I've erased it twice. I ran the Drive Genius thirty-minute hardware test; the drive looked okay.
What's the real story on Directory corruption? Thanks.Along the hardware lines, it would also help to know with what kind of computer you are using this (generally helpful for any question asked here).
Before you return it I would suggest checking things like the cable (as BDaqua suggested), that your board and connections are secure. Are you plugging this directly into the computer or daisychaining?
