Mavericks 10.9.4 complete system freeze on any webpage with Flash

Been running 10.9.4 without problems on this rMBP 15" 2.3GHz, 16GB RAM.  Today it started freezing when I tried to load a flash video from comedy central.  Complete system freeze, cursor stuck, no feedback, hard restart required.  I thought it might be Silverlight at first so I disallowed it in Safari and it seemed to be ok, but after loading another video the system froze again.
It now occurs for all browsers I try, Safari, Firefox, Chrome.  I have now *uninstalled Adobe Flash* via Adobe's uninstaller, and disabled extensions in Safari.  When I go to youtube.com the system freezes completely again.
I have run Disk Utility and at first it reported that repairs were needed.  I tried a Command-R restart but the computer would boot up eventually into a black screen and then I'd hear "To continue in English, press return" but then nothing would happen.  I restarted and tried to go into Safe Mode but it didn't work, read that I needed to disable FileVault for that approach.  I could still boot normally (and still can), so I disabled FileVault and have tried booting into Safe Mode.  It still doesn't work though--sometimes when I restart it just doesn't go into Safe Mode, and sometimes it goes to a black screen.  However, now when I run Disk Utility's Repair Disk, it reports no problems.
I don't know what to do from here except back up to Time Machine and restore from backup.

Thanks for your suggestion Eric.  I tried that and it gave me the recovery volume option.  But when I selected it, after a few seconds the screen went black and stayed there until a voice said "To continue in English, press return".  I'm guessing that it is in recovery mode correctly but there is a problem with the graphics card which leads to the screen shutting down.  I don't know what else I could try except taking this in to an apple bar, but holla if you have any ideas!

  • [SOLVED (in kernel 3.8.8)] Random complete system freezes

I have installed Arch Linux on my desktop, however I am getting random complete system freezes when I use either GNOME Shell or KDE 4 when using OpenGL compositing. I have resorted to using Xfce (which uses Xrender for compositing).
Sometimes the system freezes immediately upon login.
Sometimes GNOME Shell says "Oh no! Something has gone wrong. A problem has occurred and the system can't recover. Please log out and try again." and forces me out.
Sometimes the system works fine for an hour or so before it freezes.
Sometimes the driver appears to have crashed but then recovers (screen goes blank for a second and windows/decorations are redrawn, then works fine until it completely freezes again).
I am using the xf86-video-ati driver with a ATI Radeon HD 3850. I suspect the problem is with the video driver and/or kernel.
    I have tried:
    - Using Alt+SysRq+? keystrokes after adding kernel.syseq=1 to /etc/sysctl.conf (system doesn't respond at all once frozen)
    - Keeping an SSH connection open (SSH client says "host down" once the computer is frozen)
    - Doing a memtest (ran for 11 hours with no problems)
    - Redownloading and reinstalling all packages from a different mirror (no improvement)
    - Disabling KMS (GNOME Shell runs very slow, at wrong resolution, and the resolution settings doesn't give me the option of the correct resolution)
    - Adding radeon.agpmode=-1 to my kernel parmaters (no improvement)
    - Edit: Also I tried installing linux-lts (GDM and GNOME Shell graphics ends up all broken)
I was previously using Fedora 17 with the open source driver without any problems.

  • Strange complete system freeze with no log messages

After the latest pacman -Syu, I've been having problems with hard freezes which leave no error messages on any of the log files in /var/log.
    I have checked /var/log/everything.log, errors.log, Xorg.0.log, dmesg.log, kernel.log, and messages.log, but none of them indicate any problems.
In the three occasions when the system has frozen, it has occurred when I press the "enter" key (twice while browsing the web, and once in gnome-terminal), but pressing the "enter" key does not always freeze the system.  In particular, it has not been a problem when logging in via GDM.
OK, the system crashed twice again after pressing enter while typing this post.  Now, I'm resorting to copying and pasting new lines.
As I've already said, log files show no errors or any messages which indicate this sort of problem.  The screen simply freezes, there is no hard-drive activity, there is no response to keyboard or mouse inputs, I cannot switch to other tty screens.  Unfortunately, my keyboard doesn't have lights for numlock, etc., so I cannot do the keyboard lights trick to check for kernel panic.
This all happened just after the most recent package upgrade, so I'll post which packages were upgraded here:

Anyway, I removed GDM from rc.conf and startx from console. So far so good, no hard freeze in one week.

you can also start gdm from the inittab.

  • Constant hanging, beach ball, complete system freeze...please help

I have had my MBP since the beginning of the year, about a month I started experiencing problems and took it into the Apple store where they replaced the Harddrive and Logic Board. It was fine for a while, but since instaling CS5 and upgrading to Snow Leopard my Mac appears to be dying a slow death. It has got to the point where it is completely un-usable, after a restart with no applications running, simply browsing the finder I have constant beach balls as the finder tries to load the contents of a small folder. And when actually trying to do some work, with two or three apps open...the Mac freezes for up to 30 secs before every task, no matter how simple.
All my software and firmware is up to date! This is frustrating and completely disappointing, any help is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance,
    Adam

Backup your data, and take it back in to service*:

Sounds like they left something loose.

  • 10.6.4 complete system freeze when resuming from screensaver-VMWare Fusion

I have a Macbook Pro, 3,1. I just upgraded to 10.6.4 and noticed the following symptoms:
Shortly after launching VMWare Fusion 3.1 running a Windows XP VM (from a Bootcamp partition), a series of pop up messages were complaining about a bad OpenGL driver. The message popped up repeatedly and wouldn't let me out, even though I kept pressing "Ok". I had to force quit Fusion, which caused a chkdsk on relaunch of the XP VM.
After a complete reboot, I started VMWare again. The Fusion complaints haven't shown up again, but when resuming from the screensaver, the system either completely freezes up, or the screen login window starts to flash rapidly and seize up. I'm running Spaces with 6 virtual screens. Whether I'm in the Fusion Spaces screen or any other Spaces screen, the system freaks out when resuming from a screensaver.
I use this system at work, so I have to be able to lock my screen when I leave my cube. The only way I've been able to ensure the system doesn't freeze up and cause a hard reset of the XP VM is to completely disable the screensaver and power saver features, such as Start Screen Saver = Never, Computer Sleep = Never, Display Sleep = Never and launch the login window by clicking on my user name in the upper right corner of the screen on the menu bar. Even that causes a sluggish screen and I'm not confident it will keep working. I also made sure (from day one) that the Windows XP screensaver functions were all completely disabled. I prefer to use the OS X screensaver for everything, if for no other reason than having a single screen locking/unlocking point for when I step away.
This was all working properly in 10.6.3. The only nit-nat I noticed about Fusion in 10.6.3 was that it had to be launched in the "Primary Window", which seems to be the upper leftmost Spaces desktop. If I ever moved it to, or started in any other Spaces desktop, it would also exhibit the same random lockups. Keeping it in the "primary" space seems to have stopped the lockups.
I noticed that there seemed to be significant updates to the OpenGL drivers in 10.6.4. I am experiencing an unfortunate side effect of these updates and hope I'm not alone and that a fix is coming soon. Looking at the other posts, there seem to be a lot of similar problems. I wanted to describe my configuration in case the Apple dev team reads these posts. Thanks.

I ended up doing an erase and fresh install of Snow Leopard (10.6.0), upgraded to 10.6.4 with the combo update, then a fresh install of all my apps, including VMware 3.1. Everything has been solid for 2 days now. I'm guessing that my system had a magic combination of issues that weren't visible in 10.6.3 but became obvious only after upgrading to 10.6.4. I had been upgrading my OS since 10.5.0 over the last 2 years and needed to do a clean re-install for some time now.
I'm guessing that others who are noticing problems with the 10.6.4 update have a similar situation with their installations. Think back on all the times a software installation failed, or the system required a hard boot. Plus, I had a lot of 3rd party apps on my box that never posted updates for later Snow Leopard releases, so who knows? Anyway, it's good to have a clean and snappy system again. A lot of my apps launch a lot faster now and survive the screen saver and power saver modes just fine.

  • G5 won't run AHT....systems freezes. Any Thoughts ?

    Hi All,
I am trying to figure out what is going on with a G5 I have at work. Coworker says machine just freezes multiple times a day while she is working on it. I ran Tech Tools last week and it did not show any problems yet the freezes continue. So today I tried to run AHT version2.1 (G5 is running Tiger 10.4.8) and I can not get it to run. I first tried the extended test and on the first try it froze at 5 min 40 secs on the mass storage check and gave text in the screen top upper left ending in "ok". I restarted the machine and ran extended test again, this time it froze at 4 min at the logic board check again giving text ending in "ok".
Then I tried the quick test twice. First time it froze at 11 secs at the logic board check. Second time it froze at 2 and a half mins again at the logic board check. The text again was in the upper left of the screen and the message said something about "invalid memory access at....and gave a whole string of numbers which mean nothing to me.
So, does anyone have any idea what is going on with this machine? Do I have a RAM issue....this machine is mainly used for Photoshop work I had apple care on it but it expired 3/06 so that is no help. I will have new macs in a few months but am trying to keep this one running until they come in.
    G5   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

AHT on the original install disks/Tiger disks doesn't get updated with OS and firmware changes.
The Genius Bar has access to the latest versions of AHT.
Clone your hard drive (Superduper) to a new drive that you have Disk Utility>Zero-ed already and hold option to boot from the clone and see if your problems continue.
Your problem could be hard drive, corruption in software, bad memory, PCI cards, external devices and so on.
Only with a process of elimination can you solve your problem.
    Hope that helps.

  • Just had a complet system crash, had to reboot with power buton.

    Dear all,
Some days ago I had a random Xorg crash while I was reading my emails. It happend just once, I though it was nothing. A few minutes ago, monitor went black, sound stopped, num lock light freezed (pressing the button didnt turned it off), alt+printscr+{b,o} did nothing.
How can I discover what caused this?
I also see some problems with how the image in monitor is showed, here one example of the botton of the page "create new topic" in this forum:
Some windows appears with repetitions when resized (I use awesome window manager). But I do not know if this is related to the crash problem.

    Is this a hardware problem??

Using a vacuum cleaner around a computer is extremely bad advice.  Vacuum cleaners build up static on them as part of their normal use.  If you happen to make contact with a part of your computer and the vacuum that will discharge the static.  Any static discharge has the potential to fry your computer components - they are very fragile chips when it comes to electricity.  Do not use a vacuum on your computer.  Compressed air cans are what you should be using however the entire line of thought that it may be dust build up causing a poor connection is suspect itself.  You can make sure that the components inside your computer are well seated in their slots if you wish to explore that possibility.  The suggestion of switching to the open-source driver is most likely to provide quality feedback.  Be sure to read:
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ati
    The open-source driver page.

  • Complete system crashes, without any notice!

    Hello,
I just bought a brand new Macbook Pro 13" about one week ago, with the basic hardware (2.4Ghz, 4GB RAM).
It worked perfectly during a few days, and then it started to crash on a regular basis.
When I say "crash", it's the screen that becomes "grey" (both the computer and the screen are still on, but the whole machine is frozen with a "grey screen"). Everytime it happens, it's without any notice, just like that while just browsing the web or at least without using any particular software.
When I called the Apple help center, they told me to get the machine back to the store. Therefore I used time machine to backup everything, I went to the store where they gave me a brand new machine without asking any question, and then I restored all my time machine backup on to my new computer.
However now after 2 days using the new Mac, the problem starts again. I guess that should be a "software problem"? But what? Has anybody already got that problem???
    Thanks for your help.
    Mathieu

    Right . . .
    That would make sense.
With Kernel Panics, it's almost always something having to do with connected hardware.
Sometimes, even RAM going bad . . .
Anyway, I'm real glad you figured it out!

  • Firefox constantly freezing due to issues with Flash. Please help.

I was running the firefox 20 beta (and have been for a while) when in the last few days, suddenly any time I tried to open any site that used even the slightest amount of flash, the browser would freeze for minutes on end before finally releasing a "plugin error" type message about Shockwave Flash. If i clicked 'continue' it would stay frozen. If i clicked 'stop script' then sometimes it would fix it, but most of the time it would keep freezing and showing that same message over and over until I stopped the process in task manager.
First I tried to update flash and shockwave- both are up to date. So i decided to delete the files themselves and the programs via add/remove and reinstalled them. Still did not fix the problem.
Next I tried to do a reset firefox to default state. This didn't work. I tried doing it again with the flash files deleted/uninstalled AND I rebooted the computer and the problem still persisted.
Finally, I tried to downgrade to a more stable version of firefox, so I downloaded 19 and it still didnt work. Tried the uninstall/re install for flash one more time and nothing.
At this point, I cannot access about half of the pages I usually go to on the web and I need help here, please anything will do.
One thing that I noticed that might be helpful is that no matter how many times i uninstalled or reinstalled flash, every time it would try to run, task manager would show two instances of it, each using different amount of memory.
again, please please help. If there is any solution short of a total wipe it would be greatly appreciated

hello, maybe it's an issue with the protected mode in the flash plugin - you could try if [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/flash-113-crashes#w_solution-2-downgrade-to-flash-10-3 downgrading to flash 10.3] (which is still supported) or [http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1018071#TemporaryWorkaround disabling protected mode] makes a difference.

  • Yosemite: Input freezes when loading webpage with video (flash?)

Just updated to Yosemite, and its impressive. But im having a severe issue where input (mouse and keyboard) freezes for at least 5 seconds whenever I load a webpage in Safari with a video on it. Not sure if its just flash or any video. This did not happen before upgrade.
Im on a late 2013 Macbook pro Retina 13" with Yosemite 10.10
    Any suggestions or similar experiences?

Try uninstalling Adobe Flash Player, and determine if the web page containing the video you are using really requires it. Most don't.
If, after uninstalling Flash Player you determine you really require it, install it again. That alone may fix the problem.

  • T400 downgraded from Vista to XP resulting in system freeze after 10 min activity

    Hi,
I just purchased a T400 and have gone through the process of (re)grading the OS from Vista Business to XP. From the moment the setup dialogue for XP started (machine name, date, users etc), the whole systems freezes after working the machine for around 10-15 min. First, I suspected it to be a mouse freeze, but I get no reponse from neither the keyboard nor mouse (not sure if it is a complete system freeze or to do with mouse/keyboard drivers). Even the clock in the bottom right corner stops running.
To get the system going I need to force the system to reboot using the power on/off button.
The XP restore disc I used came from Lenovo with the computer, and I have followed the instructions by point. Do any of you recognize this problem? And more importantly, know how to deal with it

    Hi,
I posted a message on the forum 5 days ago, and got no replies.  I agree the  problem description might be a bit vague, so here we  go again:
I recently purchased a T400 (model 2765, 21g) with the XP downgrade option (the MS Windows XP Conversion Kit containing 2 CD's: Lenovo's Rescue &  Recovery plate + XP product recovery plate with SP2). During the installation of XP (the end part where you set up your user) the computer freezes (no response from keyboard). I power the machine off and on again, and the installation continues as it were. I finish the installation and the computer is set. After additional 10 min the computer freezes again in the same style.
I imagine it to be a powermanagement disagreement between MS system and Lenovos powermanagement system, and set every parameter to be always ON and full performance ( I am running on AC). This time the freeze doesn't happen for an hour. I then begin to reinstall the powermanagement drivers and the general drivers for this particular model running XP (from Lenovos drivers Matrix), and now I am looking at two hour before each freeze. That is if I don't plug in any external hard drives (then the system can crash within 15 min or an hour), and we turn a blind eye to the occational freeze after 10 min on the first boot of the day .
At some point I suspected there to be a conflict with the existing SATA drivers that I also have reinstalled for the occation.  Still the system is NOT stable.
And the frustrating thing is that I have no clue why. The sympthom is always the same, complete screen freeze ( I do not know if the system is active behind (no hard drive running)), that can only be cured with a forced boot.
If any of you reconize this, please assist me to a solution. I have by now installed all programs to my liking including all MS updates (SP3 etc), and hope there is a way to get to the core without a complete reinstall (or worse, return to the realm of Vista)

  • Safari causes system freeze during page load

    Description:
I've been trying to figure this one out for a while now (about 2 weeks), without any luck. I've tried reading a couple of threads describing similar problems, but it looks like I've got something else going on here seeing as it affect the entire system. I appreciate any suggestion!
When a window in Safari is open and you're loading a page, it sometimes (almost always) causes a system freeze. Any action performed on any input device within OSX while a page is loading gets delayed by 5-20 seconds. Anything from right-clicking, to opening a new tab in Safari, to navigating to a new folder in Finder.... literally anything. The actual loading of the page is also affected by this. So when I click a link, the page becomes white and the system stalls. After X seconds, the system resumes and the page is displayed fully loaded. Once the page is loaded, everything is back to normal. I can just leave the Safari-window open without anything happening. It's just during the loading of a page.
Using the mouse to move and switch between open windows are the only actions I seem to be able to perform during the system freeze.
When it doesn't cause a system-wide freeze, it will still take forever for any page to load. Which isn't a problem in any other browser and I've never had any speed issues in general on any device.
What I know for sure is that I can solve the problem by closing all open Safari-tabs and windows or closing the app completely, and use Chrome instead. But I do like Safari, so I hope there's another way to fix this.
I should also note that I've made no changes to the system for many weeks now, other than installing whatever updates might have been available on the App Store.
    What I've tried within Safari:
    - program restart
    - reset settings (every option checked)
    - disable and remove extensions (only had one installed, LiveReload for Adobe Brackets)
    - empty cache
    - delete cookies
    What I've tried within OSX:
    - system restart
    - complete OSX-recovery
    - activity monitor (CPU, HDD and RAM always within normal values during all of this)
    - checked HDD (successfull)
    - checked internet-connection (got 50Mbit/s connection, no speed issues, checked on multiple devices)
    - tried other browsers (Chrome (OSX) and IE (Win 7, Parallels) both run smoothly)
    - turned off IPv6 in terminal (based on a suggestion here at the forums)
    - disabled iCloud-sync
    - disabled Dropbox
    - probably a couple of other things i can't remember right now

    So... I finally fixed it.
In addition to the things I mentioned I tried, I also checked if it could be malware-related. It wasnt. I then checked if it was just affecting my user-account or OSX globally. I created a new account and Safari ran perfectly. I therefore assumed it had to be something in my library-folder.
I deleted just about any mention of Safari in the Library-folder (the visible one) and just to be absolutely sure, I deleted the Contents-folder inside Safari.app in the Applications-folder. I then downloaded and installed Safari 7.0.3. Everything runs smooth now.

  • Wine / Cedega system freezes

I am curious if it is a software bug or my computer, but
    - Cedega freezes whenever I try to install an application
    - wine freezes whenever I run an application
My system is up to date with current, extra. I have to admit my system suffers several sata / scsi related hardware bugs dealing with cd and dvd access, and it seems that both, cedega and wine, touch the cd/dvd devices during startup of apps and then freeze.
Could be my crippled machine, or wine. What's your experience with wine today?

If I launch GrooveShark, my entire system will freeze. Sometimes it lats an hour before the freeze, others happens immediately.
The mouse stops working, CTl-ALT-DEL produces no result...complete system freeze that requires a forced shutdown.

  • K8N Neo2 Platinum System Freeze

Here's my issue: A complete system freeze that happens after ten minutes or 2 hours (or anywhere in between).  There is no pattern (except that it seems more likely to happen under more intensive apps).
My motherboard and processor have both been RMAd once.  The AMD rep confirmed that my processor appeared to be unstable under high stress (uhh, never heard of this before).  He said that it was a very unusual problem, and they promptly sent me a new one.  I tried the new processor with the same mobo and had the same problem.  I then RMAd the mobo.  The MSI reps sent me a new motherboard but never said exactly what was wrong with my old one.  Now, I'm still having problems (I just put the computer together this evening).
I've heard the same stuff in other threads about memory timings and 12V rail issues.  I guess I could try to RMA my four sticks of RAM and power supply, but I somehow doubt that will fix things.
Note also that I have built a system almost identical to mine for my brother, and he has no system freezes.  The differences are that he has only two sticks of the Crucial RAM, is using AUTO voltage, has 1T/2T set to AUTO (always loads as 2T), and has a PC Power and Cooling power supply.  Aside from that, the systems are identical.  I have tried his RAM settings and still experience freezing.
I've been running now for almost 20 minutes with a record of almost 1 continuous hour tonight.
I've never had a freeze like this before - no errors, nothing in the event logs, video stays on screen, fans are running, but everything else stops cold.  Very strange.
I am really beginning to regret using this platform.  I heard all the hype and decided to go for the AMD/MSI combo eventhough I've always used INTEL/ASUS or INTEL/SUPERMICRO before.  I guarantee you that I wouldn't be having these issues with either of those combos.  I really need to have a stable system for my primary workstation.  I guess my mood can be best described as upset with a little confused and angry thrown in.
    Any help is appreciated.

I completely removed my PSU from my system (disconnected everything) and benched it as per Antec's explicit directions.  Here's what I found:
    3.3 Volt Rail (32A): I have 3.36V
    5 Volt Rail (40A): I have 5.11V
    12 Volt Rail (30A): I have 12.01V
These findings, of course, have not ruled out the power supply being at fault, and I still intend to send off my additional RAM to my brother for testing tomorrow.
The reason why I haven't sent it off yet is that I was kind enough to play along with MSI tech support and try BIOS 1.36 (1.3B6) which is date-stamped earlier than my 1.3 final release.  The 1.36 version did nothing for my stability problems, and I am going to attempt 1.37 tonight (I understand that that is supposed to be a more recent version).

Grumpy, I've RMA'd both my motherboard and processor.  I've tried memtest (it ran perfectly), and I've rebuilt this system at least three times in the course of all of this mess.  Thanks for the feedback.  Hopefully we'll get to the bottom of this nasty little bug soon!

Been there, done that.  I RMA'd it a couple weeks ago.  The trouble is, the board has the same problems.
I would really like to thank Novablade for his support in this.  It's good to have a little sympathy from somebody who has the same board and the same problem.
