Mavericks 10.9.5 Unable to move desktop icon. Sort By = None.

ON version 10.9.5 Mavericks.
This was working but the past few days is no longer.
I am unable to move a desktop icon (i.e. drag it and move it into another folder, etc).
View/Sort BY = None.

Take these steps if the cursor changes from an arrow to a white "prohibited" symbol when you try to move an icon on the Desktop.
Sometimes the problem may be solved just by logging out or restarting the computer. Try that first, if you haven't already done it. Otherwise, continue.
Select the icon of your home folder (a house) in the sidebar of a Finder window and open it. The Desktop folder is one of the subfolders. Select it and open the Info window. In the General section of the window, the Kind will be either Folder  or something else, such as Anything.
If the Kind is Folder, uncheck the box marked Locked. Close the Info window and test.
If the Kind is not Folder, make sure the Locked box is not checked and that you have Read & Write privileges in the  Sharing & Permissions section. Then close the Info window and do as follows.
Back up all data before continuing.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
xattr -d com.apple.FinderInfo Desktop
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing command-V. You should get a new line ending in a dollar sign ($). Quit Terminal.
Relaunch the Finder.
If the problem is now resolved, and if you use iPhoto, continue.
Quit iPhoto if it's running. Launch it while holding down the option key. It will prompt you to select a library. Choose the one you want to use (not the Desktop folder.)

  • Unable to move iPhone icons in iTunes

Subject pretty much says it all. The Mac is a macBook with Yosemite. The iPhone is an iPhone6. When I plug the iPhone in, select the iPhone, select apps,
I see a list of apps located approximatly  in the middle of the screen, with the option to select remove or install. On the right the home screens are shown etc.
I'm unable to select an icon on any of these screens. When I click an icon and attempt to drag it, ITunes wants to move the entire home screen.

Double click on the screen so it enlarges, then you can drag and drop.  You have to do this with any of the folders as well.

  • Can't move desktop icons around

    Hello,
I have a MacBook Pro with OS X 10.10.2 Yosemite, and when I try to move my desktop icons around the desktop they snap back to where they were before I tried to move them.  I have tried changing settings and restarting my computer.
    Cheers,
    Adam

Hi. This doesn't resolve the problem on my end. The icons still can't be re-arranged or moved around. Sure, they will adjust to "Set by Sort", but I still can't drag them around, say from one folder into another. They are fixed to their spot.

  • Unable to select desktop icons after sleep.

Looks like another possible bug. When I wake my G5 from sleep, sometimes I cannot select any of the desktop icons. If I go into the View settings and change the icons layout - like text below or to the right, I can access them all again.

Good question! That line actually means that the original poster of this thread can award "helpful" status to up to two messages that people submit as answers to the topic question.
I can definitely see how you misread it that there are two helpful answers available on the board somewhere, though....

  • HT2491 move desktop icon

i am setting up a mac book air and one program has put itself in the middle of my desk top and will not move. I would have put a version in launch pad, where i want it, but one icon stays on my main opening desktop page. The program is vlc media player

Hmmm, do a Get Info on it, any clues as to where it really is, or rights & such?

  • Cannot move desktop icons

i can highlight them then "move to trash" that is all. cannot drag anything on the desktop to rearrange things. I cannot find any settings for this

Here's Apple KB Article TA21052. Apple says to restart your Mac as many times as it takes to allow drag and drop again. This problem is limited to some Jaguar users. It may take numerous restarts.
It is also suggested, in another Apple doc. I saw, you install the 10.2.8 Combo update. You can install right over your present 10.2.8 with no issues. Make sure you unplug all USB and FireWire before installing. Just to be safe, Repair Permissions before and after the install.
    If that doesn't work try the following submitted by George Orville;
    Drag & Drop not working...
You have a choice files to delete in ..... ~/LibraryPreferences
    • com.apple.desktop.plist
    • com.apple.dock.plist (your choice to delete this or not)
    • com.apple.finder.plist
    • com.apple.LaunchServices.LocalCache.csstore
    • com.apple.LaunchServices. plist
    • com.apple.LauchServices. UserCache.csstore
Also you have a choice of files to delete in........
    /Library/Caches/ (folder)
Then restart your Mac and try!

  • I am unable to move app icons from one screen to the next, after 2.1

    Can any one verify this?
I have restarted the phone, just in case and the behavior continues.
While on the subject, it would be nice if Apple could supply a MAC interface for rearranging the iPhone screens as it is not much fun on the phone itself.

Figured it out last night. it does work but you now have to kind of over along the boder before it jusmps over. I am pretty sure that before it sufficed to push the icon to the border in order to move it over.
I guess this new way is better as you really need to want to move it in order to switch screens.

  • Unable to move app icons from home page, on my iPad, to another.

It seems to only move apps when I hold it in landscape view. I've Just received the iPad back, after sending it off to apple to be fixed. It would open apps by itself, freeze and be generally unresponsive.

Try a reset and see if that helps.
Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.
If that doesn't help, I'm not sure what Apple might have repaired since they generally replace devices rather than repair them, but I would question them and see if they can help. They may have replaced your iPad with a "bad" device.

  • Desktop Icon Sort Order Reversed

On my 15" MBP, I noticed that all my icons are being sorted in reverse order. No matter whether I select sort by size, date created, modified, etc, all the icons are sorted in reverse.
Any ideas how I can fix? I've already tried deleting the finder preference file, but no luck.
To clarify, this is not an issue in a finder window, but on the actual desktop itself.
    Thanks!

Same problem here. Click on empty area of desktop, then keep arranged by name...
Alphabetization is fine, EXCEPT, the A column is the on the RIGHT, and moves alphabetically down and to the LEFT. English alphabet and column order should be start at LEFT and move down and RIGHT.
In other words, alphabetical order is backwards. Any help?
    Thanks in advance.

    1. No
    2. You can only transfer a rental to an Apple TV 1, which Apple TV do you have.

  • Cursor keeps drawing boxes, can't click on desktop icons

I can't move the cursor without it drawing a box and I'm unable to open desktop icons. I've employed force quit to close out all running applications however, this leaves me with the force quit application dialogue box stuck open and unable to click on anything else. Shutting down or restarting has had no effect. I did manage to confirm that the battery status is now at change soon. Is this the source of the problem ?

I had a similar problem where it seemed that the right click was engaged and it kept highlighting everything.  The battery casing was bowed and loose but I never thought that was a problem until I asked someone at the Apple Store.  She recommended taking the battery out completly and running on AC power until I could afford to get a new battery.  (I am using mine as a desktop cause the screen went out 3 years ago and I can't afford to get a new one.)  Solved the problem immediately and I have not had an issue since.  I hope this helps, it is worth a try.  It got to the point with mine that I was forced to turn off the computer at the power button without properly shutting it down.  It was basically unusable and I need my computer for school.  This definately solved the problem.  Good Luck.

  • Desktop Icons: Reset Positions?

I usually have 2 monitors connected to my mac, with icons on both. Today, I had to unplug one, and all the icons from the 2nd monitor appeared on the 1st. Now when I re-connect the 2nd monitor, the icons are all still on the 1st monitor, and the icons that were previously on the 2nd monitor are not in their original positions anymore. Is there any way to put them back? Thanks.

My experience has been that once something moves desktop icons around, they'll stay where they got put (with the exception of icons for disks or hard drives) unless you move them again.
Back in the days of OS 9 and earlier there were small utility apps available which could be set to record the locations of icons at a specific instant in time, and could then return them to those places later on after they got moved. Handy in the case of some games which ran in full screen, but changed the resolution dramatically, leaving the desktop icons crammed into the upper left quadrant.
I haven't seen such mentioned for OSX, though to be honest I haven't looked for such. Even so, the utility would have to have already been run so it could record what was where before asking it to restore positions.

  • Why am I unable to move icons around on desktop? How do I release these?

Why am I unable to move icons around on desktop? How do I release these?

In Finder "View > Show View Options > Arrange By " there you will find choices as to how your desktop arranges itself or not.

In the Finder select menu item View -> Show View Options. Look at the "Arrange by" setting at the bottom of the window.
