Mavericks 9.1 Bugs

After upgrading to Mavericks 9.1 this morning, I noticed some issues right off the bat:
Deleting items off the desktop now requires a password for every file being deleted.
The trashcan doesn't update its graphic to show it has items in it, but displays as an empty can, even though there are thousands of files in it.
Mail seems to now randomly loose emails if I Quit and reopen.
Cannot drag mail items onto the main "Inbox" folder. Previous functionality would allow this, and automatically assign it to the specific inbox folder for that account.
Has anyone seen this behavior as well, are there workarounds? Or has my system become corrupted? I'm seriously considering wiping and going back to 9.0, if these issues can't be fixed. It almost seems like my user account has become dissasociated with the files.

Ok, did that ... booted from installer, ran resetpassword, then reset permissions for all user accounts, also ran Repair Permissions (twice to make sure the repair was successful). It removed a bunch of ACLs.
I still have the issue with user files prompting for password when deleting or moving. Get Info on one of the files revealed that all files seem to have an extra "everyone" entry with custom permissions, which is overriding my read & write permissions. If I change the "everyone" permissions to "read only", I get my effective "read & write" permissions back. Any thoughts as to what might cause this?
Mail app doesn't seem to have vanishing email issues anymore.
Trashcan shows garbage in it now.
The other issues still persist.

  • Mavericks full of bugs

I have just restored my iMac (early 2009) to Mountain Lion after trying Mavericks. The Mavericks installation went without any problems, as have all the upgrade installations that I have ever done going back to 2001. And every upgrade has presented no serious problems. Until now with Mavericks.
My iMac seems to be running well. Disk Utility disc verification was without any issues. I do not have any strange third party apps installed. They all come from the App Store.
Nevertheless, Mavericks has been one problem after another. For instance, both my updated Aperture and iPhoto have needed to be force quit and then they refuse to open anymore. I wanted to restart my iMac to solve this problem, but the restart hanged in the grey screen and I had to force quit my iMac with the power button.
The Finder screen has frozen, spotlight has failed to find a file I know I have, system preferences has frozen, as well as Safari. It all seems to happen only with Apple apps. And each time I try to restart I have to press the power button to force a shutdown to do so.
I have no idea why Mavericks is doing this. I am back now in Mountain Lion and everything works perfectly!

I have exactly the same issues, the inability to shut-down properly is incredibly annoying, and overall there seem to be more bugs.
Windows constantly freeze, with inconsistencies such as app icons staying in the dock after being force-quit. Window focusing is also broken, with focus not being applied to the window I click until I click around like a mad-man for 10 seconds.
But to top it off, I keep getting frozen out of the system, I'll be working away and then everything freezes apart from my mouse and music from iTunes, leaving no alternative but forcing a restart.
All of these things led me to believe it's a HDD issue, but considering I had it replaced 6 months ago by Apple, it has to be Mavericks.
I'd happily pay Apple for an upgrade if it meant better quality-control!

  • Maverick's Finder bug when downloading or copying ?

Since the Maverick update I have 2 bugs : one major and one less important but still wanted to see if I am the only one with this happening...
The major bug is about the scrolling and I won't go into into details because their are already lots and lots of posting regarding that major major bug.
The second bug happens when either telecharging any kind of file or when compying any kind of file on the desktop ....the thumbnail which sort of tells us it's done never shows up even though the file has downloaded or been copied.
I get something like this .....and it stays like that even after being installed or moved elsewhere...weird huh !?
Am I the only one ?

    Hi
    1) How much free space do you have on your Hard Drive?
    2) In Accounts > Login Item, how many App's are set to auto open at login?
    3) Select All Processes in Activity Monitor and see what else is hogging resources?

  • Lightroom 5.2 and Mavericks Lights out bug with dual monitors

I installed OS X Mavericks on my iMac which has a second NEC display connected and that I use as my main display. When I activate "lights out/lights dim" pressing "L" on the keyboard my primary display (NEC) doesn't change at all but the secondary display (iMac) is the one that dims the lights on the interface. Makes no difference if I have the secondary display active as a second screen for Lightroom or not. Lights out/dimm dosen't work on my main interface display.
Anyone seeing this as well with their second display?

I am having the same issue and wondered what was the issue. Thank you for posting; now I remember Lightroom didn't start doing this until I updated to Mac OS Maverick. The only time I don't have that problem is when I physically disconnect my secondary display from my computer.

  • Mavericks Mail typing bug

    Hi:
while I'm writing email in 10.9 today, I found that there's a bug:
once I type like "I've" or "We're" the ' will change to ‘ thus becomes "I‘ ve" and "We’ re"
I'm Taiwanese, in Chinese we use double-byte ‘ but now only in the mail it autocorrect my single-byte ' to ‘
does anyone face this problem, hope Apple would fix it soon...thought I think only Chinese users face this bug lol

I'm just guessing that maybe it's because of my sources? because when typing Chinese we could press caps lock to quickly change to type in English
But when I typing in English I use English keyborad that means the caps lock means capitalizing...so I think it's a bug...but only in Mail, not in the safari nor pages
    here's a photo of it:

  • Mavericks disk (partition bug)

I upgrated to Mavericks on one of my partition (Macintosh HD 2) and deleted the other one. BUT Mavericks won't let me "update" the size of my partition (Macintosh HD 2) even though i have free space (up to 200 Go) ! Help ? Thanks !

I also have something wrong ,but it could be the fact I have to many Partitions !
Every Partition I have is arranged differently depending on what Disk Utility I view on what Partition I am in.
so I have one Recovery Disk that I can boot into and some Volumes are not mounted and Show error
    1.  Alert ' Live file system repair is not supported '
2 .  In red, ' EFI Partition File system needs repair '
3 Problems were foiund during Partiton repair
Surely A 10.6 DVD is going to repair a partition Map !
There is a difference in the DU in Applications in Installed OSX and the DU on the DVD ,and I use this to repair
So should I use a Memory stick and use R  and DU externally ?

  • How to download but not install OSX Mountain Lion on Mavericks

    Hi all
I would like to download but not install OSX Mountain Lion on my MBP which is currently running OSX Mavericks.
This however seems impossible. I think OSX Mavericks were already installed on my MBP and therefore it seems "impossible" to download it.
Now, why would I to do this? The answer is quite reasonable, due to certain demands related to an application portfolio I need Mountain Lion, because the portfolio is not upgraded to run on Mavericks. And, it is more reasonable to downgrade a version of OSX, rather waiting for the portfolio upgrade which can take years.
Yes, I need to downgrade my secondary MBP which also came with preinstalled Mavericks. This can be done, if I only could download but not install Moutain Lion.
It should be easy enough; download Mountain Lion, make an installer and make a bootable thumb usb stick. Then erase Mavericks and install Mountain Lion.
I have previously bought Mountain Lion so it is accessible to me in the App Store, but whenever I try to hit the Download button, I get a message saying this can't be done, since I am running Mavericks.
This bugs me, it should be obvious users needs the flexibility to swap whatever OSX version they need. It is still software.
So, how can I download but not install Mountain Lion on my newer MBP that came with preinstalled Mavericks?
I would like to see answers like:
"In order to get this to work, you first have to disable the locking mechanism in [...] " instead of "No, this is impossible to do"
    Regards

    Thanks for your reply Eric
Can't help wondering thought, people are ok with this?
Basically Apple are saying: "Do not attempt to install an older version of OSX which came preinstalled. If so, expect multiple failures." Really?! Has it always been so? For me it's not like I'm going to install Snow Leopard on my Late 2013 Retina MBP, but I would expect some form of backward compatibility between the previous version and it successor. Apparently this is not possible, and how is this even acceptable?
Personally, I am not going to downgrade, as if I had a choice, but I would and I expected however, the possibility to at least download the previous OSX version. What do you do if you have bought several applications, not necessarily online from App Store and buy yourself a new Mac with preinstalled Mavericks and after installing your "old" applications they fail to work properly? What do you do since downgrading apparently is not an option. So... again, what do you do?
If you don't have friends with an older Mac, you could be facing serious problems. And I'm not talking about gaming, but serious business.
I find this quite disturbing actually, and please tell me it's not so. There gotta be a way to do this?
I simply want to download the OS but I expect some registry values (like windows' registry) keeps preventing this.
It should be possible to simply download and not download and install in one operation, shouldn't it?
    Regards

  • Mavericks changed my background color without warning?

I set the background on my desktops (external thunderbolt monitor) to solid black and I can't remember if I clicked the back button first, but I then closed out of system preferences...
I used the machine for several hours, then shut it down.  I came back today and the backgrounds are both white...
Anyone else having this happen?  What could have possibly caused this?  I shut the computer down (it did not crash, or exhibit the infamous Mavericks random shutdown bug), so I'm having trouble figuring out the best way to diagnose this.
    Please help!

    Check the default color settings:

  • Mavericks Upgrade Issues

What are the issues, if any, in upgrading to Mavericks? Have bugs been minimized? Equipment incompatability? Software incompatability?

    Have bugs been minimized?
I've not encountered any bugs myself.
    Equipment incompatability? Software incompatability?
No one here can answer that as no one knows what equipment or software you have. You will need to check with the manufacturers/developers on the versions which are or are not compatible.
FWIW, your profile shows you are running 10.6.4 - you will need to update to 10.6.8 to get the app store so you'll be able to download anything from there.

  • Numbers version 2.0.3 on Mavericks

What versions of Numbers will run on Mavericks and port spred sheets successfully to the new OS?

When you upgrade to Mavericks it installs the new versions of Numbers, Pages and Keynote at the next software update.  Then you are pretty much screwed.  The new versions are downgrades, do not support all previous features and this may result in loss of data.  It is very difficult to continue to use iWork'09 while the new versions are on your system.  The 'always open in' feature accepts your change, and then immediately reverts back to the new version.  The only way is to quit the new version, open the old version of the software and then use the Open command or drag and drop.  Extremely frustrating.  Opening in the new version, even if you don't save it, then opening in the old version resulted in my file being damaged.  Deleting the new versions from your system is the only reasonable option.  But Mavericks will reinstall them again the next day.  So you have to turn off automatic installs, and Mavericks will still bug you every day to install it.  You cannot refuse, you can only say 'Later' and your choices for later are '1 hour', 'tonight' and 'tomorrow'.
Mavericks ***** big time.  I am going to try to revert to Snow Leopard.

  • Yosemite - Opinion - Difficulties with installation

The following is my personal opinion after having installed OS X 10.10 aka. Yosemite. I hope this is the right community to post this. I also had a little trouble with the installation. Perchance this'll help other people deal with similar dificulties.
Installation froze at the last stage. It said "about one minute" for more than half an hour. I eventually powered the Mac down, and after reboot installation would start from the beginning. Luckily, it didn't freeze again. I added some information from the log files at the end of this post, in case you're interested.
Folder icons are much brighter. On a white background (the default) they look like translucent and lack a sharp silhouette. The system font is no longer Lucida Grande but Helvetica Neue. This looks nice in the dock, but Lucida Grande definately looked better in the menu bar. The trashcan no longer looks like a basket but like a cheap rubber cup. It is so white, it sticks out quite ugly from the Dock. The hard drive icon looks like rubber too and lacks of a shadow beneath it, which makes it much less readable over certain desktop backgrounds. Mounted disk images, on the other hand, look a lot like SSDs, which is okay but pointless.
They removed the full-screen icon from window titles and redefined the green button to the left as the new fullscreen button. Windows that don't support fullscreen such as Finder windows will still maximize when the green button is clicked. To maximize a window that supports fullscreen, you can press and hold alt while clicking the green button. This may be something that needs some getting used to, but I like the new behaviour so far.
They removed the redundant Dock submenu from the Apple menu. There is still the menu over the Dock's separator line (the one that separates running applications from files and the trashcan), and of course there's the system settings panel. I like this change, because the Apple menu has looked cluttered up ever since OS 9.
Mavericks had a bug that you could open the collapsed side bar when you were trying to resize the window width by grabbing the window's left border. They seems to have fixed this. Or maybe I just forgot how to reproduce it.
    (0) Spotlight now searches both your hard drives and the Internet. I find the latter both confusing and distracting, but luckily you can turn off this behaviour in the System settings.
    (0) Spotlight now opens a window as soon as you click its magnifier icon. The window shows previews of the matches, which may turn out a nice feature. The window is non-draggable and has a fixed size, which is unfortunate. Moreover, it would be closed as soon as you click somewhere else. That's not as bad as it sounds, because you can see the previous results when you click the magnifier again, but still it feels pretty arbitrary.
Before Mavericks came, you could create an alias of a window's folder by pressing and holding command and option and dragging the icon that's shown in the window title bar. Since Mavericks, this no longer works, and Yosemite does not fix this. Luckily, command-clicking the window title to see the file path still works, as well as dragging the icon to move the folder. (I use the latter a lot to copy the path of a Finder window to an open Terminal.)
There is now a calculator in the notification centre. Yet another one? The system now comes with three calculators: one in the notification centre, one in the Dashboard, one in the Applications folder. The latter is the only one that can do more than just the basic arithmetic operations. As a programmer, I use both the scientific and the programmer's view quite a lot. The version that came with Mavericks definately looked better though, but all the functions seem to be still there, so I don't really care.
File tags (colours) are still as they were introduced in Mavericks. To switch tags, you still have to remove the tag, then go into the menu again to set the new tag. Tag colours are still fairly small dots, which makes them hard to spot in certain views.
Finder windows still sometimes forget the settings I do to them, and the option to disable both the toolbar and the sidebar still can't be made the default and has to be reassigned to folders again and again if you prefer this setting. This behaviour was introduced quite some time ago, I think it must have been 10.8. I hoped Yosemite would perhaps finally fix this, but I was mistaken.
Scrollbars still haven't got their arrows back. The arrows were removed with 10.8, I think, and I still badly miss them from time to time. Try scrolling in a large document and you'll know what I mean!
Yosemite still respects my ApplePersistence=NO setting. This is a flag that may be set to NO using the Terminal and the command "defaults" as root, which will turn off the strange and pointless ApplePersistent features they introduced with Mavericks. After setting it to NO, applications will never be automatically reopened at launch and Open/Save/SaveAs work again as they should. I'm very glad ApplePersistence=NO still works with Yosemite!
The text of window titles of some older applications as Microsoft Word 2008 or Textwrangler 4.5.3 are now drawn in a lighter grey than Finder windows and system applications, which makes these windows look as if they were inactive.
    Appended: Some errors during installation.
Nothing got logged in system.log during the actual installation. That's probably normal, because system boots from a disk image when installing. So, no error messages here. The following is an extract from system.log when booting after I had done a forced shutdown as the installation progress got stuck:

Think you wanted your reply to be to pjonesCET1
But, I will give an opinion on your post --
You want to use Microsoft Office because of the robust nature of its elements.    Apples Iwork and prior to that Apple works - is at the level of Microsoft works - an stripped down piece of software that meets the need of many people.    Apple and Microsoft agreed to have a version of Microsoft office that could run on Apple devices.
The of problems between versions of Maverick and Yosemite may have to to with apple releasing Yosemite before it was fully tested with Microsoft office - or the bug has been there awhile and Yosemite just brought it to the surface.
In general - when new level of software comes out - its not a complete re-write.   Commented out code that was replaced with new code is removed, along with indicators for new code and history of what the problem is are removed - giving clean code.   If the language has new structure, the code may be passed through a converted that, depending on detail reformats code into new statement structure.
Sometimes bugs are added because a certified programmer just can't read existing code even their own - or just ignore standards and use a new instruction that is incompatible with existing code.
Microsoft does issue patches for existing software - so they may do that for your problem - but some problems can take a while to figure out just where they went wrong.

  • English Mail Displays in Chinese

I received e-mail from Microsoft Skype Support in Asia.
The message is composed in English.
It displays on my iPhone in English.
But in Mavericks Mail, it displays as Chinese.
I have have no Chinese Language or Keyboards active in my System.
It is only messages coming from Skype Support that display in Chinese on the MacBook. And only on the MacBook. I am using GMail and the message displays in perfect Engish in my browser and gmail.com. Likewise, perfect English on the iPhone.
Knowing Microsoft, it is likely being sent from a Windows machine. But I suspect this is a Mac Mavericks GMAIL Mail Bug
Anyone have any idea *** is going on??
Some weird bug in Mavericks Mail is mangling this message coming from Asia and displaying it in Chinese.
When I run the Chinese through Google translate, it is mostly gibberish.
If anybody can read Chinese, here is some of the message.

  • Have Trial Version of Premiere Pro CS 6 on OS X 10.9 - Encore Quits when Booting

I have the 30 day trial of Premiere and Encore CS 6 and Encore quits every time when booting.  A link appears afterwards to suggest a fix (from Adobe) but will not click.  Any suggestions?  I just installed Mavericks, so a bug oir two is expected.  Thanks.

    Buy CS6 http://www.adobe.com/products/catalog/cs6._sl_id-contentfilter_sl_catalog_sl_software_sl_c reativesuite6.html?promoid=KFPMZ
    >So if I buy now Premiere CS6 full (with Encore CS6) and decide to upgrade to OsX 10.9 it will not work ?
Go to http://forums.adobe.com/community/premiere and, in the area just under Ask a Question, type in
    mavericks
You may now read all the previous discussions on this subject... be sure to click the See More Results at the bottom of the initial, short list if the initial list does not answer your question
Do the same search process at http://forums.adobe.com/community/encore
I am Windows so did not bookmark the messages, but I have seen SOME message threads with SOME solutions for SOME mavericks problems
Bottom line... do NOT upgrade to 10.9 unless you want to risk the same problems
    >no Encore CC for Premiere CC - W H Y
CS6 is the final Encore http://www.adobe.com/products/encore/faq.html
From that Encore FAQ... What platforms are supported for Encore CS6?
Encore CS6 is supported on Microsoft® Windows® 7 with Service Pack 1 (64 bit) and Mac OS X v10.6.8 or v10.7. Please note that Encore CS6 support for future operating system updates or new hardware platforms will not be provided.

  • My current version adobe reader is not reading pdf's on my mac

Why would my adobe reader not "read" my pdf's on my mac?  It just stopped a couple of days ago.  It works on my PC, and on adobe online, so it's not the documents.

I actually deleted my app and downloaded it again today.  So the recent
version whatever it is.  I have iMac Lion 10.7.5? (on Lenovo laptop now).
early 2011 model without airplay mirroring so didn't update to Mountain
Lion and I heard recent free Maverick update has bugs so didn't update to
    that either.
