Mavericks AirPlay Extend Desktop as FCPX A/V Output?

Hi all,
Has anybody been successful at using the new "Extend Desktop" mode for AirPlay in Mac OS X Mavericks to setup an AppleTV as an external monitor for Final Cut Pro X? I tried but when I go to Preferences...->Playback A/V Output says "None Found". I just think it would be a convenient, inexpensive way of leveraging the AppleTV as a monitor.
Any ideas?

Thanks Luis. As you say: "more or less". Besides the lag it's also a bit buggy. I had to switch applications a couple of times for the viewer to show and respond. Also, full screening the viewer make the main monitor go all black, so you can't really have a full screen viewer and the interface on another screen. At least I couldn't figure out how. But this is better than nothing I guess. Thanks for the tip!

  • ITunes breaks Airplay extend desktop via Apple TV

Hi there, using my MPBr 15in with Yosemite installed and an Apple TV.
I have been watching photoshop tutorials in an iTunes playlist via extended desktop (Video played on extended desktop on TV, I'm following along with Photoshop on my mac).
I had put my mac on charge and did some things for a while, came back and went to continue my tutorials. But for some unknown reason when I select play in iTunes, instead of just playing on the extended desktop like it was earlier, iTunes quits the extended mode, 'sends' the video to the Apple TV which is a bit of a bumpier process then I'd like. Not to mention it needs to 'buffer' the video each time the next one is played. The worst issue is that the video is zoomed in too far, meaning I cannot see the photoshop tools or the menus along the top and no way to change it (it seems at least). I could forgo the Airplay streaming if it didn't have that issue.
No Apple account is signed in to the Apple TV.
I have tried changing a couple settings in Apple TV (including overscan settings on/off) to no avail. Also changed iTunes setting of Airplay that appears next to the volume slider. No matter what I try when I play the video, extended desktop mode turns off and iTunes streams just the video to Apple TV, also meaning I have to completely disconnect from Apple TV and reconnect again.
So my question is, how do I force iTunes to not use Airplay streaming when I have specifically configured the computer to extend the desktop? I want to extend the desktop!! Using the multiple desktop feature is useful!
Why does it assume I want to stream it independently rather than keep the second desktop?
Why has it done it now, instead of before? I never pressed anything that I know of. It just decided to do it.
If for whatever reason there is no way to turn this auto configuration off, how do I stream the video so it does not cut off the edges?
Thanks in advance. If I figure it out I'll be sure to post what I found here.

Troubleshoot the network, starting with power cycling the ATV and router.

  • Airplay display issues: "extend desktop" not working properly. Secondary display continues to mirror.

Whenever I turn my airplay display on and set it to "extend desktop," my secondary display (TV) continues mirroring my mac book pro (hereinafter MBP). It doesn't fully mirror my MBP, but my secondary display registers every time I switch between my desktop 1 and my full screen apps. Moreover, When I do switch to a fullscreen app on my MBP, I get a blank (blue-ish) screen on my TV.
    Any solutions!?!
Additionally, "extended desktop" for my Airplay display worked properly when Mavericks was first released.

    Try this:
Click on the Apple TV Icon on the top toolbar
Then, select "Mirror Built in Display" instead of extend desktop
In the same menu under "Match Desktop size to:" select "Apple TV" (or keep it on "built in display if that works"
This solved a similar problem for me.

  • Can't set up extended desktop in Mavericks

I can't seem to join my two displays (MacBook Air display and external Cinema display) into a single extended desktop. Worked fine in Mountain Lion.
Does anybody have a solution? The onscreen help is no help.

OK ... after logging out and back in, the fix above from captfred worked. That fixed my main problem, in that I can now run Citrix Receiver across both monitors.
New problem ... I think. With the settings changed, when I go to fullscreen mode in an app (such as Safari), it fills up one monitor and the other goes blank, just like they did in Mountain Lion. Anybody else seeing this?
The new problem isn't a huge deal, but I can't believe that Apple didn't make the new fullscreen behavior in Mavericks work regardless of whether a space covers one or two monitors.

  • Is it possible to airplay my extended desktop to multiple apple tv at the same time

    Hi
I am looking to do video distribution in the venue I work in thrue multiple apple tv. The Idea is to use AirPlay and to send my extended desktop to about a dozen apple tv at the same time. is it possible to do it ???

Winston is correct you may want to consider a multiplexer its what places like bars restaruants usse when the wat several tvs to use the same imput. is cheaper then several apple tvs hers one at $132.74 i have never used it but searced google and found it would give you up to 8 tvs of one HDMI signal.

  • HT204291 Airplay stacked on extended desktop

My airplay suddenly stacked on extended desktop. I can not change to "mirror iMac" choice. In extended desktop mode, sound is ok but blank display on apple tv (3rd gen). Any comment please ?

Finally, after spending hours on the blogs I have found that extension of iScreen third party application which I have downloaded and deleted 2 years ago was the problem. I have deleted the extension and problem solved.
After 10.9.2 update, do not use any of third party remote desktop or similiar softwares.

  • Mavericks Airplay Blur

I have a late-2013 Macbook Pro 13". When I upgraded to Mavericks on my previous white Macbook, the extended desktop on my TV went blurry. Did an EDID override and that took care of the matter, though only for one of the two TVs I use (not simultaneously) as external monitors. Same problem when I went Pro, same solution worked, to the same degree. But I also experience the issue when using Airplay to extend or mirror my screen as well, and the EDID solution won't work for that.  Does anyone know how to fix this, aside from reverting to Mountain Lion? ; )

  • Display goes to Extended Desktop when awoke in Closed Clamshell on TV

I use my 13" MBP in closed Clam Shell mode nearly all the time. I have it connected to my Sony 40" HDTV using the Griffin adapter and it works great most of the time.
BUT sometimes when it comes off sleep mode. All my desktop icons are on the extended desktop (TV) and the dock is on the main screen (Closed Laptop Screen)
So I have to Open up laptop. Make Laptop go to sleep. Close Laptop to closed clam shell again then everything is good on TV again.
Not sure why this is happening. Probably 1 in 10 sleeps it does this.
    Any Ideas anyone.......
    Thanks in advance

Yup. I have no issues using an external display in clamshell mode. It's only when I try to airplay to my apple tv while in this clamshell mode that I run into problems. So to clarify, there are 3 devices in my situation: my macbook, my external monitor, and my apple tv (which is connected to my hdtv of course, so 4 devices). Usually I just use my external monitor with my macbook closed. That works fine. But when I occasionally want to airplay to my apple tv as additional mirrored/extended monitor, I have to open up the macbook first to exit clamshell mode. Otherwise if I just go straight into airplay while still in clamshell mode, my hdtv shows a frozen image, my external monitor goes black and I have no choice but to manually turn off my macbook. Hope that makes sense. I think it would be easier if I could draw a diagram haha.

  • Extended desktop ... HELP!

Do you only get the "extend desktop" option in the preferences window if proper card is "already" installed? I have a 856(?)mhz G4 running 10.2.2. I am going to install the card from a different mac that I had an extended desktop in for video editing. But I just noticed that "my" computer isn't giving me the "arrangement" option. Do I need to install this card before getting this option???? Please help, I want to buy a couple new displays for this computer, but can't if it won't work!!!!

I had this problem, then I uninstalled AirParrot and my AirPlay is working properly again.

  • Second display extended desktop?

I just hooked up my second monitor.
When I bring up displays it gives me the mirroring option.
When I click it I get the same as the first monitor.
How do they set these for FCP X  editing.
Extended desktop I thought it was?

  • Mac extended desktop mirroring needing to 'split' the sound

The setup is that I am using my iMac in one room (the study), and I am using airplay to extend the desktop so that my apple TV in the living room is used to play a movie for my parents to watch.
The sound and video transfers just fine to the apple TV on 'desktop 2', but I was wanting to be able to play a seperate video on my imac, in the study. I can't seperate the sound. Even though the video is on 'desktop 1' on my iMac any video's sound on either screen will be played through the TV speakers as my System preferences only allow me to select 'iMac' or 'apple TV'
Is there any way to 'split' the sound?

""Extended Desktop" and "Dual Display" mean the
    same thing..."
Actually, they don't. "Dual Display" simply means
that the computer can support two displays. "Extended
Desktop" and "Desktop Mirroring" refer to the
different modes in which the two displays can be
used. "Extended Desktop" uses both screens as one
large continuous desktop while "Mirroring" displays
the same desktop image on both screens.
    O.K. I'm confused.
Can the Macbook display extended desktop (one giant desktop with half on the laptop and half on an external monitor) or is it limited to just mirroring the same desktop on both displays?
    Thanks,

  • Tablet PC calibration error in Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator CS3 whilst in Extended Desktop Mode

    Hey everyone!
I've run into a snag which hasn't bugged me before because I never used a second monitor, but now that I do, Photoshop and Illustrator don't function properly.
I am running my Adobe products on my Lenovo X61 Thinkpad Tablet, which is Wacom PenEnabled. It's got the basic digitizer pen and pen pressure features, no stylus tilt or anything.
Whenever I run Photoshop or Illustrator in Extended Desktop Mode so I can have a different window open on my external monitor and the Adobe app on my tablet screen, my stylus goes strange. It seems to think that the extended desktop is part of the Adobe window, so when I move my stylus to draw, the cursor will appear on the external monitor, usually proportionate to the size of the screen...ie. It interprets the external and tablet screens as one desktop and the top left corner of my tablet screen is the top left of my external, whilst the bottom right on tablet IS the bottom right on tablet, if that makes any sense...sorry.
So I can't draw anything in photosho unless I set it back to standard desktop mode, or mirrored desktop. I've searched over the net and these forums and I can't find a fix for this. I was walking in harvey norman the other day and the Wacom Cintiq 12" was there on display, and it had the same issue with extended desktop and photoshop.
Has anyone had this issue before and/or does anyone know of a fix for it? I'll keep searching around and playing with the computer until I fix it and I'll post any solutions I find here if noone else has one.
    My system details are:
    Abobe Photoshop CS3 10.0.0
    Adobe Illustrator CS3 13.0.0
OS: Windows Vista Build 6001, Service Pack 1, 32bit
    RAM: 2GB
HD: 18.2GB free Disk Space (out of 66.3GB on the Active Partition)
Video: Intel GMA: Mobile Intel(R) 965 Express Chipset Family

I'm using an HP tx2011au tablet pc, using adobe flash cs3 and have the exact same problem. it becomes decalibrated only while the flash window is open, and only while flash has a file open, and only when using an extended desktop. even if flash is open and it has no files open it works fine.
