Mavericks and Connection Speeds to Internet

I have an old Airport Express.
I run my iMac on OS 10.9.2
All my devices - iMac, iPhone, iPad - run on WiFi.
My internet provider is via cable modem and I am supposed to get 15 Mbs.
Before switching to Mavericks, I enjoyed the full 15Mbs speed on my iMac.
Since Mavericks, the speed on the iMac is just a small fraction of the above and I have to wait 10 seconds for a page to load.
However the download speeds on the iPhone and iMac are as zippy as ever.
So I have to conclude that it might be the Mavericks OS that is somehow causing the problem.
Has anyone else experienced this?
Is there a remedy?
Cheers
John

Hi,
It can be a number of factors.
In some areas that use Cable you may be on a particular "node" that is having issues.
Add to that the fact some ISPs slow the internet down when they suspect File Sharing activities are going on.
In the some cases it is speculated that ISPs can target a particular "node" when doing this.
Heavy File Sharing on such a Node would also slow your portion down as well.
Another Computer or Game Console doing a download or playing an On line game can also effect things.
Line of Sight WiFi and Satellite connections can have their own issues.
ADSL tend only to effected by general variances in the speed supplied by the provider.
This may depend on the "Contention rate"  at the exchange level (Access tends to be bundled together and could be anywhere between 20 and 40 end users. - Then it depends what those end Users are doing and some could be businesses)
A certain amount of the speed claimed to be supplied is given over to maintaining the connection.
When speeds of around 256kbps download were common for ADSL it could be as much as 10% of the download speed.
Obviously speeds have got much faster over those same wires.
At higher internet speed then the natural variances can be significantly high when looking at the actual speed lost.
As a percentage it tends to be about the same.
But 10% of a 40Mbps service is 4 Mbps in itself.
On top of that there can be a rash of Internet attacks on various servers around the world which increase the general amount of traffic on the internet and like a five lane highway this too will slow down.

  • "Unable to Reach Servers" and "Connect to the Internet" Error Messages

    Hi.
So, I purchased Adobe Audition at $19.99 per month for a year.
    It hasn't worked yet.
I've tried all the online forum advice - drop firewall, check hosts file, check some certificate, remove/reinstall Audition ...nothing has worked.  I still get messages saying "Unable to Reach Servers" and "Connect to the Internet."  I'm ALWAYS connected to the Internet.
I use Windows 7 Home Premium SP1, 64-Bit operating system.
This needs to be fixed, or I want my money back.
Someone please help.  I'm already 2 days with no access to something I've paid for.  I don't like this.

Karen did you have any questions regarding the steps listed in Sign in, activation, or connection errors | CC, CS6, CS5.5 - http://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/policy-pricing/activation-network-issues.html.  If your membership is valid then there must be a connection error between the computer and our activation server.
Are you on a managed network?  Do you utilize a hardware firewall or proxy server?

when shuting down Firefox after not being connected to the internet the processes remains and I have to go into task manager and remove the process manually or I get a message that Firefox is already started and it will not come up

Sofar I have found (off internet),
A)that if you go into sleep mode, the wifi shuts down or powers down.
B)sleep mode must be disabled in order for wifi to continue.
C)you can check this by going into wifi and seeing the iphone every 20 seconds or so looking.
D)as far as handoff ,I still not to sure but I think BOOTH units must overlap each other in order to handoff from 1 to the other.

  • Snow Leopard and connecting to the Internet

Has anyone had intermittent or constant problems connecting to the internet since upgrading to Snow Leopard? I am trying to find the cause of the problem and I'm not sure if it's the Broadband provider (British Telecom) Faulty wiring (which has never been faulty before) or the fact I've upgraded to Snow Leopard as the problems occurred at the same time. I have had new wiring in the house plus a new router (BT home hub) but still the problems persist. The router switches itself off whenever I'm uploading or downloading any information. It can normally cope with loading web pages or emails, but as soon as the Macbook Pro switches on, it synchronizes with mobile me and that makes the router switch itself off. It does switch on afterwards, but the interruption not only upsets the sync but also the backup of my files. It is most annoying and as this problem started about the same time as I installed Snow Leopard, I'm trying to eliminate any issues to find the real cause. The system preferences refuses to accept a 'manual' setting for sync and the macbook continues to try to sync regardless of my attempt to stop it. So I've been unable to save files to backup with mobileme and sync my devices to iphone. If anyone out there has had the same problems as me, please get in touch. I've run the disk utility and Tech tool Pro but everything is fine according to these applications.

    Similar problems Jane,
I am connecting and losing connection every few minutes. I use diagnostics to reconnect but it only lasts a short while. I have never had trouble before and still don't on my Power Pc and macbook booted in OSX 10.58, but 10.6.1 Snow Leopard will NOT behave. Browsing thru other mac related sites it seems the problem is a common one but have not found a fix yet.
I cannot connect to my Airport it says password invalid even though it is correct. My Airport Extreme Base is the original one (Space Ship Shaped) I wonder if it is no longer supported properly by Snow Leopard, Any ideas would be appreciated since I don't really want to revert to 10.5 but may have to if cannot get a fix.

  • IMac OS X 10.5.8 my mac works fine until I try and connect to the internet then it switches itself off. has anyone had anything similar ?

I can be on the mac for I can be on my mac for hours or ten minutes but as soon as connect to the internet it turns off completely every time
    Help please

    Anyone out there?
I thought this would be a no brainer for the right person.....
I hate to spend hundreds of dollars I don't have just to take it in and have someone else do something I am perfectly capable in doing, given the right advice and direction.
I would love someone's help if you are truly knowledgeable in your field?

  • ITunes stops working when it's not the active window and connected to the internet

    Hi,
I have a problem with iTunes where it crashes, only when the wifi is on and connected to a network.
Usually it occurs when I click onto another application outside of iTunes.
I've tried reinstalling both iTunes and the Apple Application Support but the problem still occurs.
I'm also on Vista if anyone has any ideas that would help?

Along with the audio control surface, this would be a VERY welcome feature in my opinion.
For those concerned about CPU drain, it should be possible to turn this feature on or off.
When I'm editing fluidly in FCP I do in fact leave the timeline playing whilst I go to other windows to select an effect, tweak a bit of audio or even move to a different app - there's nothing unusual about this at all.
Ultimately we all have our own ways of editing, but trust me, when you've been used to (and seen the benefit of) an NLE 'feature' you really miss it when the manufacturer chooses not to include it.
    Thanks

  • 21CN upgrade and Connection Speed

    Hello everyone.
Just before christmas i noticed that the BT Wholesale site has changed from having a date for my exchange getting the 21CN upgrade completed and a speed of upto 17mb to the new speed being available now.
Prior to the upgrade i acheived about 7mb download speeds. The problem is even after the upgrade the speed had not changed.
Do i have to do anything to bet the speed increase or will it happen automatically?
How long after the upgrade is done does it usually take for the speed to change?
    My current settings are:
    Downstream 7616
    Upstream 448
    SNR 98 / 230
    Attenuation 180 / 90
    Thanks

Once an exchange is upgraded ADSL2 is rolled out to customers automatically in batches, and it could be a few days or several months before it reaches everyone. It might be possible jump the queue by agreeing a new minimum period contract otherwise it just a question of waiting. You should get an email from BT when it's due and when it's done, though I only got one after the event.

  • Broadband Dropping Out and Connection Speed Decrea...

Sorry to be a pain but I am back here again.
Since the last issue with speed, connection drop out and noisey line which required an underground cable to be partly replaced, all has been fantastic and no problem to report. Many thanks to those who were involved in helping with getting that issue resolved.
About 10 days ago the broadband started to drop out at random times but not too often. The broadband hub light would go out for about 15 seconds before returning. My connection would automatically resume and no great problem. It has since become more of a problem and pain.
The frequency of drop out increased with a sort of pattern. Last week an example would be drop out at 11:50 am, again at 12:40 and once more at 1:30 pm. Each time the connection returned my computer icon for wifi would be a warning triangle. I clicked on the icon and would get a message 'limited connection'. The only way I could connect again would be to click the icon and select to disconnect and then connect, making sure a 'tick' was in the box for autoconnection. A bit more of a pain than before but usable. It got more of a problem over the next few days.
The frequency of drop out increased. This became a right pain when trying to purchase things online as I could not be sure in the purchase had been completed or if I tried again would I get two lots? Upon broadband connection returning I would not be able to 'auto connect' but would get the warning triangle of 'limited connection'. I tried the click to disconnect and reconnect but it failed to work. I ended up shutting down the laptop, waiting before powering up. This failed to work as all I would get is the warning triangle and 'limited connection'. The only way I could reconnect was to press the 'restart' button. This worked but it got worse.
The next day the broadband connection would drop out every couple of hours. It got to the point that even pressing the 'restart' button would not allow me to connect. I tried three times and gave up. I had to resort to pressing the very small 'reset' button on the back. This cured the problem for about 12 hours before the drop outs started again.
It is now a case of 50/50 if I can connect to the broadband again after a drop out. It is getting quite frustrating. I only used the small 'reset' as a last resort. I have noticed that the speed of the connection has started to drop down also.
Each time the hub drops broadband and I can auto connect and do not press any hub button, the timer has reset to zero days and zero hours. I know it takes about a week for the connection to settle. I do wonder if these drop outs are messing the connection settings for my line speed? The line used to be rated at 21 Mbps but has decreased to 17 Mbps, my actual connection used to be 19 Mbps but struggles to reach 14 Mbps. It is slowly dropping with each and every drop out.
I also looked at the event log in the hub. Just before each broadband drop out I see a external connection is made with the initials 'CWMP' followed by 'event code 1 boot' or 'event code 6 connection request' or 'event code 4 value change'. Straight after the broadband connection drops out with out fail.
All I can seem to find out is that the external connection is either the hub connecting to the server or vice versa? As for the codes? I have no idea at all.
I only ever resort to pressing 'restart' if I cannot connect to my hub. I have only pressed the 'reset' as a last resort as nothing else worked to allow me to reconnect.
Can anyone offer any help or best a permanent fix?

I connected to the test socket and used a wired connection for the speed test and hub stats.
The hub position and run of cables are the same as when the last engineer advised as the best set up.
Since my last post I have checked the event log and 'CWMP' has made at least two remote connections but the hub did not drop broadband connection. The broadband has been stable but just slower than usual, as you stated due to the drop outs/disconnections.
I guess a case of wait and monitor to see if the problem has resolved itself?
Will the speed automatically return to the usual 18 to 19 Mbps? or will something else have to be done to reset it at the exchange/server?

  • IMac OSX Maverick Wifi connected, but no Internet

Hello Mac community. I am in dire need of a resolution on this wifi connection problem. I've tried most resolutions posted here on apple support community.
    I've tried:
    1: Resetting PRAM & SMC
    2: Deleting SystemConfiguration
3: Deleting passwords off Keychain for wifi
4: Creating new wifi location under Safe Mode
I know my DHCP is fine. When I see my wifi connected, I can see my DCHP IP address connected under Advanced in Network Preferences when I check my connected wifi.
Strangely enough, I'm able to surf the internet after 10 minutes when I leave my computer enough. However, the internet cuts off and I'm back to no internet, but the wifi says I'm still connected.
There is another solution In that I turn off bluetooth, but I'm using a magic mouse and bluetooth keyboard. I can't risk turning it off and not be able to use those devices.

  • Problem with an Internal IP number and connecting to the Internet

I am having trouble connecting to the net. The IP number in my TCP/IP settings displays an 'internal' IP number begining with 169., instead of the correct one (beginning with 82.).
I can temporarily solve this problem by running my ISP's Set Up Disc, however as it reverts back to the internal IP number on closing down, I have to run the Set Up Disc each time I start over.
Anyone with any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
    Cheers.

I came across some info. titled 'Reinstalling Internet Access software' in a text file titled 'About Internet Access' in the Internet Folder. It says:
"If you are experiencing frequent problems using any of the Internet Access programs, your Internet Access files may be damaged and need replacing. Before performing a clean installation of the Mac OS to replace the files you must throw away the Internet Access files in the Internet folder, the Internet Access extension (in the Extensions folder), and the Internet Preferences and Internet Setup Prefs files (in the Preferences folder)
Note: When you throw away the Internet Preferences file you will lose your Internet account information. You can reenter it in the Internet control panel."
I will follow that advice and reinstall from my ISPs' Broadband Set Up CDs.

  • Downloading Mavericks and connection timeouts.

    Re.
I'm experiencing a problem when downloading OS X Mavericks (or anything sizeable) from the App Store.
Whenever my connection (a portable hotspot, hosted on my 5s provided via GSM) drops momentarily, my App Store download goes through an infinite "Calculating" loop. I have to manually pause the connection until I'm able to re-ping a server, (however short the timeout is, in this case, eight seconds), and resume it all over again. (This happens about four times a minute.)
Is there any way to set a greater alive-connection-interval between no-operation codes received from the App Store? Vis-à-vis TCP-KeepAlive? Or is this something I'll just have to live through?
It's a nuisance I've seen multiple people on here suffer through, with no actionable results.
If anyone has any ideas, it would help those of us with shittier bandwidth.
[Shown below is what I'm going through if the above wasn't illustrative enough.]
