Mavericks and google software update

hi folks, i installed mavericks a week back and while working with picasa yesterday a dialog box popped out requiring my permission to "allow google software update to control this computer" .. it even said ill find it in the system preferences>> security & privacy>> accessibility. Oh Yes , it was there ! Now i would like to know how could i make changes in the updater preferences .. i ve even downloaded and installed the google software updater but no icon in the applications. where does it get installed in mackintosh ? how can i access it..? i read it in google help, it says the google software updater icon will be in the finder>>applications ,but it is not there.. help needed !

Google Help is referring to an older piece of software which they have retired.  My Mac has just informed me today about Google Software Update so I've been looking around the web for more information about it
Google Updater for Mac has been retired because Google software, such as Desktop and Notifier, no longer require its use. If you had it installed, we did some housecleaning and automatically removed the program for you, using GoogleUpdaterGhostInstaller.pkg, in order to free up processing power on your computer.

  • Kernel crashes and freezes, "google software update" errors

I've been struggling to resolve a serious issue with my ibook G4 1.42 ghz, running 10.4.11, for many months now. It began to have frequent kernel panics, and my first assumption was that it was hard drive related, so in November I replaced the hard drive. I seemed to have fewer panics? but ket getting them, and then in late January decided it must be a logic board issue (I'm not on my 3rd logic board with this laptop), and I replaced the logic board. It started up fine, passes the hardware test without trouble, but still has kernel panics and now also occasionally just freezes and has to be force-restarted.
I tried an archive and install of the OS, but realized after I ran the first disc that the 2nd was missing and that I had accidentally put in my 2nd disc from my G5. It is running, but with the same freezing and kernel panics. I get constant error messages about "google software updater" having quit unexpectedly (also microsoft office updater, but I just trashed those files and it stopped)-- if this related to google software updater? Is that the software updater included in the OS? Am I right in assuming that this is a software problem, and if so do I need to buy new Tiger discs and do a clean install, or is it likely that something else is causing the problem? (Since a clean install means reinstalling all my software, and I don't have the keys for some of it after all these years, I want that as a last resort).
    Any ideas on this?

One of the known causes of kernel panic in portable iBook G4 computers, is related
to the AirPort card; when it, or a connector to it goes bad. When that's the case, the
user can try and see if turning OFF the AirPort in software resolves the issue; or go
into the computer and unplug the AirPort card (or remove it.) I've seen a few online
images of the removal/replacement of the internal located AirPort card; in those G4
iBooks without one under the keyboard, it is much more difficult to access/replace.
And the issue may not be in the card, but on the connector to the logic board.
Other causes of kernel panic may be related to a RAM upgrade chip added to the
computer (the basic RAM is soldered on the logic board, so it can't be removed)
so, when that is a cause of kernel panic; and removing the upgrade RAM resolves
the issue, a different RAM chip of correct specs can be tried to see if that helps.
The 'google software updater' caused a crash in one of my G4 Macs, or maybe two.
I removed it. The specific updater appears to be for use with Google Earth. I have
not reinstalled G.E. since the apparent related crash in one of my Macs. I reinstalled
it in my iBook G4; but don't use it much. The 'google software updater' was added
again in the computer on a new installation of Google Earth.
With an older iBook or other portable computer, it is wise to replace the original
hard disk drive when it gets old and has significant run-time on it; but the panic
and kernel notice may have had no root cause in the computer's hard disk drive.
Perhaps someone else, seeing this, may have other experience and ideas on
how to handle the matter; or a better troubleshooting path, since I have none.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • What is Google Software Updater?  It wants to control my Mac!

For the first time, the message popped up on the screen wanting to control my Mac.  I denyed, it, as there was no other explanation other than it was being requested by Google Software Updater.  Was this a safe request to grant access?  If so, how can invoke it back, as it went away when I denied it!

    Short Answer:
This article (link below) helped. It gives more detail than my paragraph (my rant) below, helped explain just what Google is doing and more importantly, how to solve the problem by installing a program to prevent the auto updates while keeping the Google applications.
    http://www.macworld.com/article/1168243/disabling_google_auto_updates.html
    Long Answer:
In doing some research on this what I found is that Google now want's to auto update ALL the Google apps running on your mac without asking your permission each time. It does this by running a program called Google Auto Update which checks Google regurally for updates on any Google applications you have installed and updates them in the background and without the approval you regurally give for updates. If you are cool with this and trust Google to update behind the seens then no problem. (Besides the fact that it causes some additional load on your computer and additional internet traffic). But that's not how I feel.
While I like some of Google's software, I don't actually trust Google enough to let them do auto updates on my Mac without my permission. And I think it's just decient for any software to ask permission to update. I like the security of knowing what's being updated and entering my password to approve of the update (especially non apple updates) each time the update occures.
And I ABSOLUTELY HATE to be given an ultimatium on MY MAC - which is what Google does in this case - i.e. "if you do not let us do auto updates (because we know what's best for you) then unstall our software and don't use it".
So I used Wireload's free Google Update Uninstaller to get rid of the updater.
    Hope this helps someone else...

  • How to solve the error message "Could not activate cellular data network: PDP authentication failure"when using 3g or gPRS on safari with an iphone 4 and latest software updates

Please can someone help me to solve the error message "Could not activate cellular data network: PDP authentication failure"when using 3G or GPRS on safari with an iphone 4GS and latest software updates. I have tried resetting the network and phone settings. I have restored the factory settings on itunes and still the problem persists.

All iPhones sold in Japan are sold carrier locked and cannot be officially unlocked by the carrier. If you unlocked it, it was by unauthorized means (hacked), and support cannot be given to you in this forum.
Hacked iPhones are subject to countermeasures by Apple, particularly when updating the firmware. It is likely permanently re-locked or permanently disabled.

I noticed the Windows Firewall Entry in the diagnostics, so I did get that part squared away...
    Windows Firewall is on.
iTunes is enabled in Windows Firewall.
Connection attempt to Apple web site was successful.
Connection attempt to browsing iTunes Store was successful.
Connection attempt to purchasing from iTunes Store was successful.
Connection attempt to iPhone activation server was successful.
Connection attempt to firmware update server was successful.
Connection attempt to Gracenote server was successful.
Last successful iTunes Store access was 2013-11-07 17:52:33.
Still unable to detect the iPhone though.

Try this Safari5.1 from the installer package
    http://www.filefactory.com/file/cc9005d/n/Safari.pkg.zip
The download worked better with Firefox not sure why. At the bottom of the page after the captcha>> slow down load is the Free link,  it took about 4 minutes to download on my test.

Since moving to Maverick and the new updated of Keynote, I have a constant problem when typing in a text box, the program crashes. Is there a bug fix for this. Drives me nuts. Like many who can type quite quickly but at secretarial level, the text box freezes, nothing works and you know what's coming...crash!
This is most annoying. Is there bug fixes for this. Apparently I have the current updates and this problem still exists. Is it a Maverick bug or Keynote.

How did you install Mavericks, as an update ontop of the previous OS or did you wipe the drive and install clean?

  • What are the differences between the Caching and the Software Update Services

New to working with OS X Server and am confused about the differences between the Caching Service and the Software Update Service...it seems to me that they overlap in that i) the Caching Service updates OS X software, iOS software and any apps purchased from the app store while ii) the Software Update service updates OS X software.
If the above is correct they why would one run both Services?  I would think that one would run the Caching Service and call it a day!
And while on the subject, what about caching and pushing third party apps like MS Office?

    Linc Davis wrote:
The simple answer is that you almost certainly don't need the Software Update service. Just use the Caching service. Neither one works with content that doesn't come from Apple.
Appreciate the response but could you please explain the difference between the two as that is the one item that remains unanswered.
    Thanks,

After updating to Mavericks and trying to updates for my apps I get : This update is not available for this Apple ID either because it was bought by a different user or the item was refunded or cancelled. My apple id has always been .mac but after the update I used .me. Are these not synonymous?

Hi everyone yesterday I was experiencing the same problem I am glad to share its fixed now for me
"This issue is only related to our Apple ID and to to those specific apps which we already have on phone or had installed on phone before except for those apps which we already have in purchase history AppStore>Updates>Purchase(on iPhone) History(having cloud icon next to them) it's something related to our purchase data
*ITS NOT RELATED TO PHONE OR MAC!
*RESETTING OR UPDATING THE DEVICE WONT MAKE A DIFFERENCE!
(As in my case it  was on iPhone 4 7.1.1 iPhone 5s 7.0.3 and iTunes of course )
Here is how I got it fixed
I contacted apple support via chat method and I  asked about a solution giving my info.she told me that she submitted my application and in order to resolve this I should not be using my AppStore ID for any purchase for at least 30mins as  doing so may not resolve the issue so I checked it after couple hours and it's fixed
(As I read in some other discussions that some people asked for solution from apple support and they told them to reset the device or so.. You may need to make your statement clear that it's appearing both on iTunes and iPhone )

  • In trying to update itunes to version 10.7 I get messages that older versions of "Bonjour" and "Apple Software update" cannot be removed and so the update fails. Itunes works well on my old ipod nano but not on my new ipod touch? Any ideas

    (1) Download the Windows Installer CleanUp utility installer file (msicuu2.exe) from the following Major Geeks page (use one of the links under the "DOWNLOAD LOCATIONS" thingy on the Major Geeks page):
    http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4459
    (2) Doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file and follow the prompts to install the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. (If you're on a Windows Vista or Windows 7 system and you get aCode 800A0046 error message when doubleclicking the msicuu2.exe file, try instead right-clicking on the msicuu2.exe file and selecting "Run as administrator".)
    (3) In your Start menu click All Programs and then click Windows Install Clean Up. The Windows Installer CleanUp utility window appears, listing software that is currently installed on your computer.
    (4) In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any Apple Software Updateentries and click "Remove", as per the following screenshot:
Next, select any Bonjour entries and click "Remove", as per the following screenshot:
    (5) Quit out of CleanUp, restart the PC and try another iTunes install using an iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64Setup.exe) downloaded from the Apple Website:

Does it go through properly this time?

As of today, iOS 7 is available for Apple devices. I went to settings, then to general, and to software updates, but it says at iOS 6.1.3 my iPad 2 is up to date. How can I download https iOS  7?

Well, now is probably not a good time to try it. The servers are overloaded, and if you look at most of the posts on this site right now, people are getting hung up at various points of their download and activation.
You need to hook your device up to the computer you sync with and download it via iTunes, or keep checking your device until you see IOS 7 is available.
But my advice would be to wait - otherwise you are just going to be frustrated, and unable to use your device....
