Mavericks and iphoto, has the library been duplicated?

When I installed Mavericks, I had 10GB of space, after opening iPhoto my space diminished to 900MB. Is this due to a duplication of the iPhoto library?

You did run the iPhoto Library Upgrader 1.1 on your library before opening it with iPhoto 9.5, right? Or did you keep your iPhoto 7 application in which case you woudn't need to use that updater?  Which is it?
In either case apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
Fix #1
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
iPhoto 8 (09) and earlier- run the options indicated
iPhoto 9 (11) and later- run  Option #4 to rebuild the database
Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager (iPhoto 8 or earlier or IPhoto 11 and later) and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button and select the library you want to add in the selection window..
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the
File ➙ Rebuild Library (iPhoto 8 or earlier)
or
Library ➙ Rebuild Library (iPhoto 9 or later)
menu option to rebuild the library.
4 - In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments.  However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • I updated to OS X Mavericks and iPhoto 11 and my photos for the last 2 month disappeared.  I have a Mac Mini.

On 10/25/2013 OS X on my Mac mini was updated to Mavericks and iPhoto was updated to iPhoto 11.  Since then the photos in iPhoto from the last 2 months have disappeared.  Has anyone had a similar complaint?  Thank you.  harck.

Since then the photos in iPhoto from the last 2 months have disappeared.
Just a hunch - the "last two month" sounds like an photo stream sync problem.
How did you import the photos from the last two month? Were they in the Photo Stream? Then enable your Photo Stream again in the Sytem Preferences iCloud pane  and iPhoto Preferences iCloud tab. This option might have been disabled. If you did not download your recent photos automatically from from the stream, the photo stram must be disabled to show them.
Also, your "last import" event might be empty after the upgrade of the library. Try to sort your events differently, to bring the last event to the top of the list in "Events" view.

  • Aperture and iPhoto - sharing the same library? Synchornizing libraries?

    Hi,
I would like to ask if it is possible to either:
    1. Have Aperture and iPhoto share the same library.
    2. Have the edits on one reflect in the library of the other (if it isn't possible to simply "share" the same one).
    Thanks.
My major concerns that keep me from going to Aperture and forgetting iPhoto altogether are:
    a. iPhoto has nice sharing capabilities (with Facebook, email, etc.) which I am not sure Aperture will have.
    b. iPhoto has good iLife integration (slideshows with iTunes music, send to iMovie, etc.)
    c. my photos have tags in iPhoto that I'm not sure would transfer to Aperture if I did the "import" process...

    1. Have Aperture and iPhoto share the same library.
No. Th Aperture Library is a much more complex beast than the iPhoto one. The two apps can shar the same photos though.
    2. Have the edits on one reflect in the library of the other (if it isn't possible to simply "share" the same one).
No. Neither is an "external editor" like Elements. Importing is a once-off thing. Once you import a pic to Aperture it never references the iPhoto version again - and vice versa.
It's tempting to think of Aperture as some kind of "iPhoto Pro". It's not. It's an entirely different application. When you edit a pic in iPhoto the apps preserves your original file and creates an entirely new file - the modified version. When you edit a pic in Aperture that doesn't happen. Your edits are recorded in the database and +applied live+ when you view the pic in the Aperture window. This is a very different way of working and the principle reason why the two apps don't - and can't - read each other's Library.
    a. iPhoto has nice sharing capabilities (with Facebook, email, etc.) which I am not sure Aperture will have.
You can email from Aperture in exactly the same way as iPhoto. There is a Facebook exporter for Aperture (though, given what Facebook does to photos, I can't imagine why anyone would want one) and there are lots of other exporters available as well. Search on MacUpdate.
    b. iPhoto has good iLife integration (slideshows with iTunes music, send to iMovie, etc.)
Aperture can do the same - and in the same way - if you set it to share Previews with iLife and iWork in the Preferences
    c. my photos have tags in iPhoto that I'm not sure would transfer to Aperture if I did the "import" process...
    They will.
There are some differences: No Face and Places features in Aperture, Aperture won't deal with video at all, you cannot order postcards and calendars via Aperture and Slideshows are better on iPhoto. But if you share the Previews with iLife, then you can access any of these features you want via iPhoto.
The best thing to do is download the Aperture trial and experiment with it.

  • After upgrading to Mavericks and iPhoto 9.5 my shared photo streams seem to contain no photos when seen in iPhoto. From iPad the streams are fine. How can I get them to be recognized by iPhoto again?

After upgrading to Mavericks and iPhoto 9.5 my shared photo streams seem to contain no photos when seen in iPhoto. From iPad the streams are fine. How can I get them to be recognized by iPhoto again?

Disable Photo Stream in the System/iCloud preference pane
and in iPhoto's Photo Share preference pane.
Reboot and reenable both respectively. That should jump start Photo Stream.

In fact, I am runing some plug-ins:  ClickToPlugin (Flash blocker), Collusion and Disconnect.
There is quite a history of new versions of Safari breaking third-party plug-ins/extensions becasue the plug developer did not have an updated version available by the time the new Safari version dropped. What you report--worked fne before but won't now--is exactly what history says happens in such a case.
First, turn off all third-party stuff and see if Safari smooths out. Alternatively, create a new user account and, from there, test Safari in its native state with nothing added. That is a good diagnostic to see if the issue is a plug or extension.
If either of those helps, check for updates to the add-ons. If the developer is slow in reacting to the updated Safari version, (not unheard of), stop using that extension until an update is available.

  • Why are Panasonic GX7 RAW photos not visible in Aperture but in OS X Mavericks and iPhoto?

My Panasonic GX7 RAW photos seem to be visible in OS X Mavericks and iPhoto, but bizarrely not in Aperture (3.5.1).
Does anyone know why this would be? Any solution greatly appreciated.
I've been unable to mange a significant number of images for almost 7 months now due to Aperture's lack of GX7 RAW support and am seriously considering migrating to Lightroom 5. Aperture has been my workflow application of choice for the last 7 or 8 years, but I feel the current situation has become unacceptable and deeply disappointing .

That camera was supported in digital camera Raw 5.0.1 and Aperture 3.4.5 or later. As you say the files are supported in iPhoto it seems you have the right Raw file.
Have you tried it with new imports in Aperture does it still fail? What if you reprocess the Raw files in Aperture, any change?

  • Why are there some blank boxes where photos should be? maverick and iphoto 11

Upgraded to Maverick and iPhoto 11(ver 9.5) and now some of the boxes in photos and events have no photos in them. Tried rebuilding thumbnails and repairing database, but no change. Mistakenly, I closed out screen that first appeared when iPhoto opened for first time that asked permission to do some task and perhaps this is the cause of the problem?

Do you have a backup copy of the library from just before you upgraded to Mavericks and iPhoto 9.5?  If so restore it to your Pictures folder and try again to open it with iPhoto.
Otherwise, run the first aid again and select the last option, Rebuild Database.  See if that helps.  If not try the following:
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button,
and select the library you want to add from those in the selection window.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.

Note 2:  Your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.

  • Where does iphoto put the library?

where does iphoto put the library?
i thought it would be put in the pictures folder but at least in my case it is not there! the folder is empty.
I can import pictures and they show in iphoto and frontrow but I would simply like to know where on my harddisk they end up.
    anybody?
    thanks

    Chris
No! Don't make anew library it will overwrite your old one.
It's there somewhere, it's just that it's visibility status has changed (why??)
    Anyway try the following:
go to http://www.cocoatech.com and download Pathfinder. This is an alternative to the Finder - and it has extra features, among them a View-> Show Invisible Items command. This might help us find it.
Pathfinder is shareware, but you can use it for a trial period without paying.

Perhaps this web page will help: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1229
But I must point out that leaving the iPhoto Library on the external is worth considering. Your internal drive would be better off without having to carry the photos.
When you booted with the external connected and you were asked for the library, did you try navigating to the Library in on the external drive?

  • Here goes. My iPod touch has all my songs on it. I have changed computers several times and iTunes has a library of similar but not as many songs as iPod. When I plug iPod in ans go to sync it says that iTunes library will replace iPod songs.

That really does not work since music is not included in the backup.  See:

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
