Mavericks and iPhoto panic

Just updated to OS X Mavericks and realized too late that I should have backed up my photos.  Read that I will need to purchase (yawn) iPhoto but am super concerned that my photos will be lost.  Is there a way to save them that I should be doing before updating?

You can copy your iPhoto Library folder to external media (DVD or external drive) before upgrading iPhoto nut a new version of the app doesn't mess with it during the install.

Disable Photo Stream in the System/iCloud preference pane
and in iPhoto's Photo Share preference pane.
Reboot and reenable both respectively. That should jump start Photo Stream.

  • Why are Panasonic GX7 RAW photos not visible in Aperture but in OS X Mavericks and iPhoto?

My Panasonic GX7 RAW photos seem to be visible in OS X Mavericks and iPhoto, but bizarrely not in Aperture (3.5.1).
Does anyone know why this would be? Any solution greatly appreciated.
I've been unable to mange a significant number of images for almost 7 months now due to Aperture's lack of GX7 RAW support and am seriously considering migrating to Lightroom 5. Aperture has been my workflow application of choice for the last 7 or 8 years, but I feel the current situation has become unacceptable and deeply disappointing .

That camera was supported in digital camera Raw 5.0.1 and Aperture 3.4.5 or later. As you say the files are supported in iPhoto it seems you have the right Raw file.
Have you tried it with new imports in Aperture does it still fail? What if you reprocess the Raw files in Aperture, any change?

  • Why are there some blank boxes where photos should be? maverick and iphoto 11

Upgraded to Maverick and iPhoto 11(ver 9.5) and now some of the boxes in photos and events have no photos in them. Tried rebuilding thumbnails and repairing database, but no change. Mistakenly, I closed out screen that first appeared when iPhoto opened for first time that asked permission to do some task and perhaps this is the cause of the problem?

Do you have a backup copy of the library from just before you upgraded to Mavericks and iPhoto 9.5?  If so restore it to your Pictures folder and try again to open it with iPhoto.
Otherwise, run the first aid again and select the last option, Rebuild Database.  See if that helps.  If not try the following:
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button,
and select the library you want to add from those in the selection window.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note 1: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments. However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost.
Note 2:  Your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.

  • I updated to OS X Mavericks and iPhoto 11 and my photos for the last 2 month disappeared.  I have a Mac Mini.

On 10/25/2013 OS X on my Mac mini was updated to Mavericks and iPhoto was updated to iPhoto 11.  Since then the photos in iPhoto from the last 2 months have disappeared.  Has anyone had a similar complaint?  Thank you.  harck.

Since then the photos in iPhoto from the last 2 months have disappeared.
Just a hunch - the "last two month" sounds like an photo stream sync problem.
How did you import the photos from the last two month? Were they in the Photo Stream? Then enable your Photo Stream again in the Sytem Preferences iCloud pane  and iPhoto Preferences iCloud tab. This option might have been disabled. If you did not download your recent photos automatically from from the stream, the photo stram must be disabled to show them.
Also, your "last import" event might be empty after the upgrade of the library. Try to sort your events differently, to bring the last event to the top of the list in "Events" view.

  • Is ILife 11 the current version today? Will its purchase upgrade my Iphoto 8.2.1 to Iphoto 11? I have a Macbook, Maverick and Iphoto is crashing when exporting photos.  I understand ILife is the way to fix it.

Is ILife 11 the current version today? (May  2014).  ILife 11 on Amazon appears to be 3+ yrs old?
When searching for ILife 11 on the Apple Store, I am directed to a separate purchase of Iphoto version 9.
Somewhat confusing, Apple is always so clear with these things.
The goal is to upgrade my Iphoto 8.2.1 to Iphoto 11.
I have a Macbook Pro, Maverick 10.9.2 and Iphoto is crashing when exporting photos.
I understand ILife is the way to fix it.
    Thanks!

The current version of iPhoto is iPhoto 9.5.1., and it is the latest version of iPhoto '11.
If you are running Mavericks 10.9.2, you can buy iPhoto 9.5.1 from the AppStore - it is the currently sold version.
The iLife bundle is called iLife '11, and the iPhot version in iLife '11 is iPhoto 9.x.x. - that is confusing allright
I have a Macbook Pro, Maverick 10.9.2 and Iphoto is crashing when exporting photos.
While it is certainly useful to upgrade to the current iPhoto version to be fully compatible with MacOs X 10.9.2, there may be a differnet reason for the crashes. Is there an error message with the crashes? When did these start? Did you import new photos or videos? Install other software?

  • Mavericks and iPhoto

I installed Mavericks and can't open iPhoto, and my system (10.7.5) won't let me install iPhoto 9.4.3. And I'm freaking out. Please help!

I downloaded Mavericks a few days ago but last night must have been the first time I've actually restarted. I click on iPhoto in my dashboard to open it and a box pops up that looks like its iPhoto but I get the spinny rainbow wheel forever and it doesn't open. It then takes ages to even get to my finder to force quit it. So that's the crux of it, but I'll answer your specific questions:
    - History: Is this going on long? Has anything been installed or deleted? - Are there error messages?
As I said, it's been happening since last night. Mavericks was installed, nothing deleted. No error messages.
    - What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
I've come on here! That's it so far.
    - Anything unusual about your set up? Or how you use iPhoto?
    Nothing that I'm aware of.
Anything else you can think of that might help someone understand the problem you have.
Yes - my macbook pro has a 500mb HD and on it, among other things, I have 144gb of photos. When I go to my applications and select iPhoto and 'about this mac', I can see that the file size is 144gb so I don't seem to have deleted anything. Also, very, very stupidly I have never done a time machine backup or any kind of back up. I just went to John Lewis and bought an external drive. Should I do a time machine backup before I do anything else?
Thanks in advance for reading all of this.

  • Maverick and iPhoto 9.5.1 freezes

I have a Mac OS X 10.9.3 and iPhoto 9.5.1.  Since the upgrade to Maverick and the new iPhoto, I can open iPhoto, but cannot edit, share, put event names, etc, without it freezing with the never-ending beach ball.  My library is on external hard drive.  I don't know if that makes a difference.  After importing photos from a SD card and then trying to edit one photo and move to the next one, it completely froze for at least 15 minutes.  I had to force quit and subsequently lost all the imported photos.  What can I do to make iPhoto functional again?
    Thanks

And note that having yoru iphtoo library on the same drive as your Time Machine backup means you have no backup of your photos - a drive failure loses both yorou :"backup" and you library - and if they both are on the same volume you sill have bigger problems as TM fils the drive and iPhtoo can not write to the library
You really need another external drive that is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) both for safety of your photos and reliability of your iPhoto library

  • Problems with Mavericks and iphoto

I updated from Snow Leapord to Mavericks.  So far everything works exept iphoto on an external drive.  It starts up and says it has to update the library.  As it goes through, it hangs up on step 6 of 11.  Computer is completely locked up and all I can do is shut down with the on/off button.  Not sure what to do, and are my photos lost?

gotitans, I think you have an entirely different problem than we are discussing in this thread.
You should open your own thread, and you should describe your problems in more detail. For example, what type of Mac do you have, what operating system does it run, what version of iPhoto did you have running before the upgrade, and just what sort of upgrade did you do (hardware, operating system, iPhoto, something else)?
My best guess from just that message is that you did a hardware upgrade, and your version of iPhoto is too old to run on the new hardware.
ntgerh64, it would probably be good if you gave us the same details I asked of gotitans. I was assuming you were talking about upgrading OS X to Mavericks and then iPhoto to 9.5 or 9.5.1.

  • Mavericks and iPhoto Screensaver

We upgraded to Mavericks- finally- and have quite a large iPhoto library. We enjoy using some photos as desktop and screensaver images. I was successfully able to get the desktop image  to work, but have had no luck with the screensaver. When I open System Preferences and go to Screensaver It points me to the hard drive rather than iPhoto and won't let me change it. Can you give me some guidance on how to proceed? The "whirling circle of death" just whirls and whirls! Thanks for any advice! It may be totally operator error here!
    Thanks!

    Hi Eric,
When I go to the Screensaver option, I see some choices of options. I'm pasting the screenshot below. When I try to choose a photo option- like classic or ken Burns, it just whirls and whirls. Eventually the screen turns black and says it's loading photos- but that was for 10 hours last night! Am I looking in the right place for the source?
    Thanks for your help!

  • Mavericks and iphoto 9 - where are my photos?

I upgraded to Mavericks, then purchased iPhoto 9.5.1.
I cannot find any of my old photos.
where can i find my old photos and transfer them?
of how do I go back to my older version of iPhoto

    Hcog wrote:
Yes and there is an iPhoto Library there that is blank. Could the new version of iPhoto just over write my previous iPhoto Library?
No. Did you create a new user in the Setup Assistant when you upgraded? Several people have done so. The system then boots into that new user account.
Please log out and see if there are two options from which to log in. If so, log in as your old user.

  • Re-installed Mavericks , and Iphoto disappeared?

I have bought my macbook pro in 2012 and it was with the Lion OS X , well I upgraded to Mavericks months ago and everything fine, all my apps were still there, and some weeks ago i decided to re-install my mavericks to erase all the stuff on my computer and start again, so, you can imagine what happened.. Now i dont know how can i have again my iPhoto, it would be great if you help me.
    Thanks
P.S: so , to reinstall the office thing, i used a code of a Macbook from my dad (just macbook, not pro) i hope that doesnt affect IPhoto and the other iLife apps

    reinstall from the original source
    Could be
1 - the restore disks that came with the computer - if it came with CDs and you do not know where they are then contact Apple to see if they can be replaced
    or
2 - the iLife DVD that you purchased
    or
3 - the app store - log in under the Apple id used to purchase the software or to set up the computer - look under purchases - you might have to unhide or accept the Application first

  • Mavericks and iPhoto 7.1.5 - missing events

Seems like this is a problem lots of folks are having, but none of the answers fits my situation... I think. I have my 85 gig library on an secondary internal drive on my MacPro ('08). Updated to mavericks on Oct 24 or so. Haven't used iPhoto subsequently until today, when I thought I would investigate why my new iPad Air is not showing the events I asked iTunes to send to the Air. I opened iPhoto and most, but not all, of my photos over the past 12 years are no longer visible. The albums, events and slideshow twirlys are all there, but nothing inside. I opened "the package" and there are folders for each year, with event names inside holding my photos. Don't know how to fix this.
First thought was manually adding the older folders to the Library. Will that work? Will events and album reappear? Would you recommend adding each year's folder to the Library to keep everything together?
Second thought was to upgrade to the latest iPhoto and hope it can reconnect everything. My fear about this approach is that I already have some sort of corrupted file relationship and adding another layer might make things worse.
I have run DiskWarrior on the drive and well as Disk Utility. Nothing amiss found.
Worried and look forward to your helpful recommendations!
    John

You did run the iPhoto Library Upgrader 1.1 on your library before opening it with iPhoto 9.5, right? Or did you keep your iPhoto 7 application in which case you woudn't need to use that updater?  Which is it?
In either case apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
iPhoto 8 (09) and earlier- run the options indicated
iPhoto 9 (11) and later- run  Option #4 to rebuild the database
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager (iPhoto 8 or earlier or IPhoto 11 and later) and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button and select the library you want to add in the selection window..
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the
File ➙ Rebuild Library (iPhoto 8 or earlier)
    or
Library ➙ Rebuild Library (iPhoto 9 or later)
menu option to rebuild the library.
4 - In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments.  However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • Mavericks and iphoto, has the library been duplicated?
