  • IOS5, iPad(1) and POP Mail account

It seems that once I updated my iPad to iOS5, it is now looking at my POP mail server and treating every email on the server as NEW...!!! So basically, it keeps pre-loading the next 100 messages and says it's ready to "Load More" messages from the server - over 5,000 messages. Not cool. How do I tell this thing to ignore all those old messages. I cannot sit here for a day or two "dismissing" thousands of messages. Any ideas?
I am in the midst of updating my iPhone 3G[s] as I type this... so the problem may (or may not) manifest there as well.

So... per your idea, I "disabled" the two POP accounts in my iPhone and RECREATED them using IMAP instead. Once I did that, a few things happened:
No massive list of unread messages
All my emails were there in both accounts
I could now SEE all the folders I had created on the mail server
When I delete an email, it always says "Unable to Move Message - The message could not be moved to the mailbox trash." in a popup dialogue... yet the message disappears.
I will need to experiment when I get home to see how IMAP behaves differently from POP. I know with POP, I could delete local/downloaded emails from my iPhone/iPad and keep it relatively clean and it had NO EFFECT on my home computer and/or the email server. As it stands, it SEEMS that IMAP treats email differently... I'll need to experiment, but it appears that I am not looking at a downloaded "copy" of an email - but actually MANIPULATING what is on the email server - so if I "DELETE" something from my iPhone/iPad, I am GUESSING that it's also being deleted from the server? Also - up until now, I used my home Mac as the "MASTER" of all my emails. I save everything into folders on my local MAC. My worry is (and I'll confirm later) that if I delete something using my phone BEFORE it made it to my Mac's inbox, it'll never get there. My MAC mail app is accessing the same accounts as POP... will look into changing them to IMAP as well (if possible).
    Thanks again.

  • I have just upgraded to Maverick and my mail will not stay open

I upgraded my macbook pro to Maverick and had no problems.  I just upgraded the Mac mini, and when I open the mail, it comes up for a second or two and then closes.  Can someone help me to resolve this problem.

I just got off the phone with Apple support.  They had me open Terminal and key in
    defaults delete com.apple.mail
    My mail is now working.

  • Web sharing and pop mail access

I use a mac mini running 10.4 as a wireless router for my macbook pro. I can access the web alright, but I can't seem to access my pop mail account. i.e. mail won't download or send mail. How can I fix this?
    Thanks,
    Chris

    Thanks very much Duane
That's great. I can now download all my emails, but now can't send any via the smtp server that the mac mini uses happily. Is there a setting I need to change in services or somewhere else?
Also, Is it safe to have turned off the firewall on the mac mini?
    Thanks again,
    Chris

  • Just installed new OS (mavericks) and lost mail folders. any advice?

I had set up several mail folders. When I installed the new Mavericks OS they all disappeared. Left with Inbox, Sent, Drafts, Trash and Junk. Is there a way of recovering the lost folders? Some very important info in them.

  • HT4718 I upgraded to Mavericks and my mail application does not load and give an error screen.

Mail application does not work after upgrade to Mavericks.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter the name of the crashed application or process in the Filter text field. Select the messages from the time of the last crash, if any. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
In the Console window, look under User Diagnostic Reports (not "Diagnostic and Usage Messages") for crash reports related to the crashed process. The report name starts with the name of the process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report and post the entire contents — again, the text, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report — they're very long and not helpful.

  • I upgraded to OS X Mavericks and my mail client wont work right. Suggestions?

    Re: Mail in Mavericks
Oct 24, 2013 4:28 PM (in response to billtuk)
    This worked for me:
    * open Internet Accounts in System Preferences;
    * inactivate all accounts that are linked to Mail
(as soon as I had inactivated my @me account, Mail opened but wasn't responsive, eating up lots of CPU. So I inactivated all others as well)
    * open Mail - should work now just fine, just without any accounts
    * go to mail preferences and activate each account one by one
(it seems as if Mail cranks up CPU usage after each activation, but it calms down after a few moments)
    Now Mail works again perfectly.
    Hope that helps others too!

  • Outlook 2010 on Win8.1 with O365 mail and POP mail in same profile

I am using Outlook 2010 on Windows 8.1.  I have both my corporate email (Microsoft's cloud-based O365 (well, really, Exchange in the cloud)) and a personal POP email in my Outlook profile.  I'm using iCloud 4 (but same happened with 3) to sync my personal contacts and calendar.  I believe iCloud is conflicting with my corporate email which (I believe) uses MS Active Sync to sync the corporate email, calendar and contacts to my iPhone.  Is there any way to fix this (tell iCloud not to touch the corporate email, only the personal one)?

Ok, well after looking at everything, I decided that the best solution was to uninstall an App called "Tango", as it seemed to 'mess' with contacts directly, and I only use it with 1 person, so switching back to Skype (plus Tango sends/shares lots of personal
info, location, and keeps changing it's access rights and doing stuff when you're not looking - I'm sure some people love it, but for me, it's a belts and braces get rid of anything that might have 'contributed' to this issue).
Found my un-sync'd contacts and emailed them to myself, then deleted the Exchange active-sync account. Checked what was left, found google had managed to sync some stuff, cleared that up too!
RE-created the account on the S4 - only need the email and password, as it finds the server and sets itself up automatically (I guess it did that previously).
All is now working, after about 5mins the data had been re-populated and it sync's new changes instantly. But I will monitor from time to time to check that new contacts or added numbers etc do sync. My best guess is that some index or other data became corrupt.
Just one of those things (or had I been tango'd?!).
On the Truncating Notes Issue, the S4 (realised that it's running Android 4.3) does chop a note but only if edited, at 1001 chrs. However unlike others, it seems to only truncate the note if you actually edit the note field, so adding a phone number or removing
one, leaves the note field intact!
To summaries other devices behaviour with the Contact record Notes Field:
    - iPhone 3GS (on iOS 6.1.3) truncates at 32,777 chrs (so pretty big notes!)
    - Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 (GT-N8020 - Android 4.1.1) chops at about 1,000chrs, even if just adding a phone number to the contact - so not even editing the notes field
    - HTC One X (4.2.2) at 5,122 chrs (when editing any part of the contact)
I hope this might help someone in the future if they have similar problems ...
    cheers

  • Mavericks disables push mail

Updated to osx mavericks and push mail appeared not to work, all settings were good except now my phone said fetch instead of push. Can anyone confirm? I rolled back to mountain lion and push mail was back.

Some background, as push notifications have confused various folks, including occasionally me...  iOS push notifications are tied into Exchange Server with ActiveSync, and into services that use the APNs Apple push notification service.  (There are other push notification protocols around, and various versions of OS X Server mail have confusingly also offered IMAP push notifications, and that was not what most folks expected when they read "push".)
To your question, Mavericks uses APNS for SMTP push notifications, and those are supposed to work.  If you're not getting the APNS requests on your iOS device, then check that your APNS certificates are valid on your Mavericks Server configuration, review your server logs for errors and maybe your local network firewall settings, and see if push notifications are enabled on your iOS device.
Caveat: I haven't rolled Mavericks Server 10.9 into production with iOS 7.0.3, so I have not tested these notifications yet.  You might well have found a(nother) bug.

  • G-Mail and Apple Mail problems

I have had tons of problems with my Mail app and Gmail. A window pops open and asks for my password and then does not have any effect on allowing retrieval from the server. Often times I cannot download my mail from gmail at all....have you had similar problems??
    OK....
this gmail/mac mail problem caused me a ton of suffering.....but I think I have it figured out....
I think the problem stems from the fact that if you use gmail through a browser and send messages, for example if you are away from your computer, then those sent messages eventually get stored as new conversations. When you return to using your mail app the messages you sent will appear in your inbox as new mail, sent by you.
I am not quite sure how the next step happens but after a lot of fidgeting what I found was that, after erasing my inbox in gmail(this is probably not necessary), after backing up the messages, I went into gmail's preferences and in POP and Forwarding I selected allow POP for all mail. What happened next was unusual....even though the entire mail box on the gmail server was empty.....when Mail started to get the messages it showed that there were over 300 messages to download. The interesting thing was that most of these messages were sent by me to someone else and had an attachment.
After downloading and erasing all these old messages that were causing this case of Mail constipation I went into Mail preferences>>>accounts>>>advanced and clicked the box "remove copy from server after retrieving message" option and then "right away"in the pull down menu. I also clicked the "remove now" button to clear all previously downloaded messages from the server. I noticed on the Mail app that this happened almost immediatly as Mail went about removing all these old messages from the server.
Since this I have not had any problems. I believe that the problem lies somwhere in the way that Gmail creates "conversations". Somehow sent mail gets spirited away in some nook on the server and accumulates, eventually causing a case of constipation. These backed up messages somehow cause the Mail app to not be able to retrieve new messages. If you find this happening do as I have and see what effect it has. Allow your Mail app to down load all the messages it "sees" and keep an eye on what they are(this may take several hours). Often they will be old and previously sent/downloaded mail. Erase them and make sure that they are erased from the server using the advanced option in Mail preferences.
Maybe someone with a more technical background can explain this phenomenon better.
    Good Luck.

"A search for Mail AND Gmail in these forums (or a
search for just Gmail restricted to this particular
forum) could have saved you a lot of time and would
have provided you a better understanding of what's
going on (note, it should be "Gmail", not "G-Mail")"
I wonder what the purpose of this reply of yours could be. If it is that something I've said has upset you, I don't know what it could be and I really wouldn't care if it wasn't because your statements could mislead other users into misunderstanding how Gmail actually works. There is nothing in the post that originated this thread that has not already been discussed recently in this forum, except for false assumptions that I'll have to clarify now.
First, choosing a setting in Preferences... > Accounts > Advanced > Remove copy from server after retrieving message has no effect on a Gmail account, absolutely none, no matter whether you choose "Right away", or "After a month" or anything else. Yes, Mail will no longer see those messages, but neither would it had you chosen to leave the messages on the server instead. The messages are simply no longer available there for any POP mail client after having downloaded them. The messages are still on the server, however, and you can read them with a web browser. That's how Gmail works.
Second, clicking Remove now in that same preference pane in Mail has no effect on a Gmail account either, absolutely none. The reason this doesn't work is the same as before. The messages on the server have been hidden by Gmail after downloading them and POP mail clients can no longer see them, nor delete them, nor do anything with them, until you go to the Gmail web site and configure your mail account to make all messages still there available for POP download again.
Third, the only way to get a message deleted from the server with a Gmail account is to log into your account with a web browser. Now, if you want your messages to be deleted immediately after being downloaded by Mail, you can accomplish that by choosing the appropriate setting in the web account settings page -- and you are limited to the options provided there. Mail's own settings will continue to be completely and utterly ignored by Gmail.
Now, had you searched these forums as I suggested or just followed the links I provided in my first reply would certainly have saved both you and me and probably anybody else that chose to read this thread a lot of time.

  • Can receive POP mail, but can't send...what's the deal?

I am trying to set up my school account on my home computer and I followed the directions for the SMTP and POP mail addresses, entered them exactly...and yet, I can't send anything out from Mail using my school address.
What am I doing wrong? Any ideas?

    Hi:
Allan has provided some useful information above - specifically -some ISPs block smtp traffic destined to be routed through a foreign smtp server and not THEIR smtp server. As he said, in mail prefs > accounts > schoolAcc't, just use your ISP's smtp server for outgoing mail. The "from" line, as read by your recipients, will still have show your school email address in it, just as you spevcified it when you created that school mail account in Mail.app. The only place junk about the fact that you are actually using your ISP and not your school's smtp server will be in the message header junk that most people don't normally display anyways.
As far as trying an alternate port (587), I don't know about that -- it would seem to me if your school's IT Dept hasn't set up port 587 as a valid port for smtp services, then that would be like specifying port 8080 in your web browser -- typing "http:www.cnn.com:8080" for example -- it won't play.
At my local university, although they would let you login to their imap server (using SSL over port 993) to download mail, they, the university, would not let you send mail if it was originating from an IP address outside of their campus subnet. So all the directions that they gave on configuring your mail account only applied to setting up a computer on campus, not at home.
What I used to do, is, in Terminal.app, log in to the campus via secure shell, and specify some port forwarding options. Then, I modified that Mail (school)account server information to use those particular ports on 127.0.0.1 (localhost), that secure shell would then forward on to the campus network. It was kind of inconvenient, because you had to launch Terminal, login via secure shell, and then launch mail. The upside, however, was that everything between you and the campus mailserver was encrypted. So, can you log into your school's network using ssh?
The first approach above, as suggested by Allan, would be easiest, although if we're talking laptop and you go onto campus, you might have the same issue then because your ISP might not like mail originating from a "foreign" (school subnet) IP address. So, you'd have to be going into Mail's preferences and switching your smtp server depending on which network you were physically affiliated with -- your ISP at home or your campus LAN at school.
If you're interested in exploring the Terminal.app secure shell thing for your mail, post back, I can tell you how to set that stuff up. Depending on your skill level, it could be considered anywhere from easy to moderately difficult to do.
