Mavericks and Preview app problem

Hi!
Yesterday I updated my iMac 27" (Intel i5, 4Gb RAM) and MacBook Air (2010) to Mavericks and noticed significant slowdown working with Preview app and RAW photos.
Preview loads photos very slowly partly covering photos with black color. This problem is on both my Macs.
I even reinstalled Mavericks completely on my Mac. Also I tried to remove Preview preferences. This didn't work. I installed Camera Raw update - no use.
In the latest 10.8 everything worked smoothly and fast. In Mavericks... it is not. I'm very upset...
Does anyone have such problems?
If there is no solution at the moment how to downgrade back to 10.8?
By the way, I noticed that Mavericks uses all of my RAM all the time. Is it normal?

Interestingly, when you go to Feedback, when you get to OS X applications, Preview isn't even listed!!  Maybe it's because the changes under Mavericks have turned a previously easy application to use into a disaster area.  Perhaps they don't want to hear the feedback?
1.  No more crop button for the edit toolbar.
2.  No more save as, or save all options under File drop down menu.
3.  Some genius changed save as to export...  only took me a week to figure that out!
4.  When opening 7-10 jpg's to edit, various problems occur:
     a.  cropping and then adjusting picture size often results in adjusting size change not being saved.
     b.  after this happens on one picture, trying to adjust size on another picture doesn't work.
     c.  repeated attempts causes Preview to freeze up and you have to quit the application.
     d.  when reopening the same pics after reopening preview they appear in 2 or 3 windows instead of the                    original 1 window.
     e.  the same problems may repeat themselves trying to edit all 10 pictures.
What used to take 4-5 minutes to do before Mavericks, now can take 10 minutes or more.  Did anyone test Preview 7.0 before it was released???

after instaling mavericks the terminal, preview, app store, etc,  doesn't work anymore...
What have to do to solve this problem?

You ran a defective third-party "utility" such as "CleanMyMac" that purports to "clean up" "junk" files. What it really does is to corrupt the operating system.
The first thing you need to do is remove that software, if you know what it is, according to the developer's instructions. Never install it, or anything like it, again. Then see below.
If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data, then reinstall the OS. You don't need to erase the startup volume, and you won't need the backup unless something goes wrong. If the system was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you may need the Apple ID and password you used.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
If you installed the Java runtime distributed by Apple and still need it, you'll have to reinstall it. The same goes for Xcode.

  • Preview app problem

I can't open files with preview app.  Could you help me with this?  MacBook Pro, OS X Mavericks (10.9.1)

Back up all data. Quit Preview if it's running.
Hold down the option key and select Go ▹ Library from the Finder menu bar. From the Library folder, delete the following items, if they exist:
              Containers/com.apple.Preview
              Preferences/com.apple.Preview.LSSharedFileList.plist
              Preferences/com.apple.Preview.SandboxedPersistentURLs.LSSharedFileList.plist
              Saved Application State/com.apple.Preview.savedState
Log out and log back in. Launch the application and test.

  • PDF and Preview related problems

    Hi:
A user in our office (MacBook Pro, v10.5.6) is having difficulty viewing and creating PDF files. To wit:
--Opening a PDF file results in a morass of symbols throughout.
--Opening a PDF file may show exclamation points substituted for tab characters.
Some other files appear to be just fine using Preview, and occasionally the latter of the two above will open and appear to be just fine and dandy. The files appear to be just fine on another Mac.
The two files appear correctly when viewed with Adobe Reader 9.0.
    Also:
--Creating a PDF file may result in exclamation points substituted for tab characters.
I tried a full system software archive and install...no luck.
I tried deleting the Adobe Reader and Preview preferences files...no luck.
I dragged and dropped a copy of Preview (v4.1) from my computer to hers...no luck.
I created a Second User, and the previously mangled PDF files open and appear to be just fine. I can also create PDF files that are true to their source document (no exclamation points for tab characters). I did only limited testing of this; however I did use the files above and created a new PDF file using the original source document. No problems.
I don't believe this is a missing font problem.
So that makes me think there's something wrong in the user's home directory with Preview and the PDF creation process. Some preference file or something.
Before I go ahead and move my data over to a new home directory...
    1. Has anyone seen this before?
    2. Has anyone fixed this before?
    3. How do I know which files to move to the new home directory and which (corrupted ones) to leave behind..if that indeed is the fix?
    4. How do I know that the creation problem doesn't extend beyond this user, and that I wasn't just lucky when Second User's PDF-created file was fine?
    TIA,
    mm

You need to resolve the conflict/corruption in the original account. This can be a laborious process, but is guaranteed to resolve the problem. While logged into the newly created account (if it's an admin account; otherwise create a new one), backup the bad account's folder (to another volume, partition, or disk), delete the bad account, selecting the save data option (which is stored in /Users/Deleted Users/ as a disk image), recreate the bad account using the same username/password combo, log out and back into the recreated original account. Run Preview and, If the problem's solved (which it should be), open the saved data dmg file in /Users/Deleted Users/, open the /Library/Preferences/ folder from the saved data, open the current /Users/restored account/Library/Preferences/ folder, and slowly copy plist files from the saved data folder to the current one that don't exist in it, keeping track of what you're moving to the new account so you can remove them if you encounter problems in the next step. Log out and back in to ensure there's no conflict and things still work correctly. Good luck.

  • Mavericks and Appleworks app

Updated to Mavericks and now cannot access documents created in Appleworks 6.  HELP!

First, read these excellent articles on Appleworks migration:
Appleworks for the modern day, a migration tip by a brody; and
    Abandoning Appleworks by Roger Wilmut.
Then here is a recent post I assembled on this topic:
If you need to run Appleworks 6 to export some data (for example a database, which cannot be opened by any other program):
    a)  If your Mac will still boot into Snow Leopard, partition your hard drive (or add an external hard drive) and install Snow Leopard (and the optional Rosetta) into it and use the "dual-boot" method to boot into Snow Leopard and run Appleworks 6; or
    b)  Install Snow Leopard Server into Parallels and run Appleworks 6 concurrently with Lion, Mt. Lion and Mavericks:

  • Maverick and outlook email problems

I upgraded to Maverick and my Outlook keeps re-synching old emails. Even after I have deleted them, they still come back.

I suggest you create a new Identity and let your IMAP mail download to the new Identity. If you have POP accounts see this link on how to move to a new Identity.
Note: The new Identity will download all POP mail left on the server. If you do not wish to download old messages, log into the accout in your browser and move the old messages to a folder you create in the browser. POP accounts only download from the Inbox.
How to move your data to a new Identity
    Create a new Identity.
Hold down the Option key when launching Outlook.
    This opens the Database Utility
Click on the + to add a new Identity.
    Set as default.
Open Outlook and it will open in a new blank Identity.

  • Installed Mavericks and several apps won't even launch

I installed Mavericks in my MacBook Pro and now several apps (Calendar, Maps, Photo Boot, App Store, etc) won't launch. There's no error pop up. The icons on the dock just bounce a few times and stop.
    Help, please.

I haven't had this problem but people on this discussion have reported that reinstalling Mavericks (over your current installation) will fix this.

  • Preview app problem, order of my images are messed up?

I don't know if this can be solved, or I need to look for a new app.
I have a lot of manga images, but they are neither "arranged" or "cleaned" by any order. I just continue to add to the folder (say "volume 1") whenever I download a new chapter. Sometimes the name of the images in the new chapter slightly differs from the previous one (usually due to change in scanlation group).
So when I "select all", and open up preview to read the manga. Preview automatically alphabatize them?? So my images are no longer in order, and I can't read them anymore.
For example, the CH1 start with "TNS_pg....", the CH2 is "TnSchp19......", and CH3 is "ShoujoCrusade_Tsuki....".
When I add them into the folder, they are in order since I don't select any arrangements.
However, PREVIEW automatically put the images from CH3 "ShoujoCrusade_Tsuki...." first when try to read it by "select all" and "open with preview"
Is there a way to just read my images as the order I put them into the folder, but not by name??
Also, if I choose "clean up by date added" etc. the newer chapters are in the front, I still can't read it.
I don't always have this problem but when I do, it's really frustrating opening up 150 images one by one so I could read my manga.
I hope I was being clear, this is my first post. THANK YOU! ~Ru

    Tony:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Was the photo you put on the About Me page sized to the size you wanted before you added it? If so select the photo and go to the Inspector/Metrics pane and click on the Original Size button. That will resize the photo to its original size. You can preprocess the image in your image editor of choice to the exact dimensions you want and then use the Inspector/Metrics pane to get iWeb to use those original dimensions. Even if you size the photo exactly before adding to the page it will always be resized a ittle by iWeb. That's why you need to use the Graphics pane to get it back to the original size. That may clear it up for you.

  • N8 and Drive App Problems

    So heres my problem
    Downloaded maps - Great!
Created Route and added to favorite - Great
    Sync and transfer - Great
Set up to Drive Offline - Great
Get in car select drive app and route, wait a couple of minites for it to settle down and then it all starts to go wrong.
Instantly trys to send me the wrong way out of my road and carries on like this for a few miles until finally picks up the route. Okay you say! Not on your life. On motorways trys to take me off and on slip roads, A roads sends me in circles?
Luckily only tried it on routes I know , and yes the route is the same as saved to favorites, wouldn't trust it to get me to somewhere I didn't know.
So why is it doing this? Surely the whole point of putting a route in YOU want to follow is just that!!!!!!!

    @discobandit
Not clear whether you are trying to use N8 without Assisted GPS being able to access data connection or not here. Whilst GPS antenna size/position compromise is not brilliant upon N8, there can be like with any GPS device problems using within vehicles with Athermic, or UV Coated windscreens.

  • Downloading Mavericks (and any app), Error "Distribution file could not be verified"

When trying to download Mavericks (any app actually), an error comes up in the App Store, "The product distribution file could not be verified. It may be damaged or was not signed." I've tried clearing all caches and even starting in Safe Mode but nothing works.

I've done the whole, delete the folders in /var/folders/ but it hasn't worked. I've also reset the App Store through the debug menu. I've booted into Safe Mode, and still nothing. I've also tried to restore permissions on my drive and that didn't work. Any other ideas?

Turns out it was a firewall blockage on our own network. Contact your IT department if none of the other cache-clearing fixes work I guess.

  • Reminder and calendar apps problem.

Anyone having problems with the reminders app.  I can only input one reminder, but when I exit the app the reminder does not save.  Same thing with the calenard

Gary, Appears not.  I have just taken a leap of faith from Balckberry to iOS, and like it a lot.  But the LOVE factor has totally failed to show itself because I can not snooze an item.  I have spent about $10 on different apps trying to find something that works, but nothing does the job 'right'.  I need to take medication 6~7 times a day, and I may not have them with me, so I need to remember to take things promptly, and needing an ability to snooze or clear the reminder is real important.  Blackberry would remind you of EVERY calendar item until you specifcally hit CLEAR, which is a great tool.  You'd think that after all these years and a new release of iOS5 they might have this feature, but appears the Apple developers don't have any real important appointments that they have to snooze....

  • Mavericks and Macintosh HD problem

Upgrading to Mavericks was pretty straightforward and so far I encountered one problem. When I click on "Macintosh HD" for the first time since boot up, the content window is blank for maybe around 15 seconds then all of a sudden the contents/folders appear. If I close the window and click on "Macintosh HD" again everything is fine, it only happens with the first attempt after a start up.
I tried verifying and repairing disk permissions but that didn't work.
    Any suggestions?

How much free space on the disk?
Control click the MacintoshHD icon on your desktop or open the Finder, control click startup disk icon then click Get Info.
You'll see Available and Capacity. Make sure there's at least 15% available disk space.

  • IPad mini iOS7 and Kindle app problem

I downloaded the iOS7 upgrade, and now I cannot access the multiple books on my Kindle app for iPad.  Went to Kindle help, where they say I needed to download an upgrade BEFORE I upgraded the iPad to iOS7.  A little late to know that now.
I tried just upgrading the Kindle app now, but still cannot gain access.  I have dozens of books waiting to be read, and I can't get to them.  Is there anyone else who has had this problem who can help me?  I'm not very tech savvy, you'll have to put it in plain English

A soft-reset (i.e. a reboot) is done by pressing and holding both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignoring the red slider if it appears), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content.

  • OSX Mavericks Bug (Preview app)

Just upgraded to Mavericks today morning...
I opened a bunch of pdfs using Preview, and I clicked on the search field to search for a word...Whenever I start typing, Preview crashes...
Then I looked into it and found out....it crashes when there is a '-' in the search criteria or when there are more than 18 characters...(though I'm not sure about it, its my assumption)
Have any of you experienced the same? And what can I do about it
    Thanks,
