Mavericks and safari numerous intermittent issues

Since the move to Mavericks, Safari does not operate properly.
Thoughts and solutions welcomed.
Intermitent issues:
Fails to load at all.
Loads and fails to fully open a site.  URL recognized but content does not load.
Can not open additional tabs.
Freezes frequently and requires force quit.

Most likely related with old plug-ins / extensions.  If you could post crash log that would be great.  To further isolate you can also try the guest account is and see if Safari works OK there.

In fact, I am runing some plug-ins:  ClickToPlugin (Flash blocker), Collusion and Disconnect.
There is quite a history of new versions of Safari breaking third-party plug-ins/extensions becasue the plug developer did not have an updated version available by the time the new Safari version dropped. What you report--worked fne before but won't now--is exactly what history says happens in such a case.
First, turn off all third-party stuff and see if Safari smooths out. Alternatively, create a new user account and, from there, test Safari in its native state with nothing added. That is a good diagnostic to see if the issue is a plug or extension.
If either of those helps, check for updates to the add-ons. If the developer is slow in reacting to the updated Safari version, (not unheard of), stop using that extension until an update is available.

  • Autofill ( on Safari ) not working after upgrading to Maverick and Safari 7.0

Upgraded to  OS 10.9 ( Maverick ) and Safari 7.0  User information and passwords transfered okay ( from previous version of Safari ), but the autofill function does seem to work on any web pages. Safari preferences shows autofill in checked ( on ) .

Try this first - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.)
Or this - Delete the account in Mail and then set it up again. Settings->Mail, Contacts, Calendars -> Accounts   Tap on the Account, then on the red button that says Remove Account.

  • Why is it that text in Mavericks and Safari renders as medium gray and not black, anymore?

Why is it that text in Mavericks and Safari renders as medium gray and not black, anymore? In Mountain Lion and Safari 6.x this was not a problem.

Have registered the following to the feedback link above by macjack:
Mavericks renders most text as a gray (65 +/- in all three RGB using Digital Color Meter) and not black.
This is a big change from pre-Mavericks and is especially difficult in Safari; worse still in Safari "Reader" where sub-heads in Reader-ized text are still paler.
Especially for older eyes this does not fly. This user is close to downgrading to Mountain Lion and Safari 6, where this was not a problem.
Stout rap on the nose: Jony Ive should be shorn of his glasses/contacts and forced to read only on these displays and OS versions until he cries out for the opthomalogist. One can only conclude this problem exists because those who came up with it were never in need of actually using it.
    Make the text BLACK.
It's the same story on our MacBook Airs and MacBook Pro.

  • With Mavericks and Safari 7, I can no longer use address bar to search.

With Mavericks and Safari 7, I can no longer use address bar to search. It shows the suggested searches but nothing happens when hitting enter or clicking with mouse. What can I do? No extensions btw.
I just cannot search - it won't work.

I had this problem and finally figured it out. Try going to View, and then Show Toolbar. I hope this helps everyone...
EDIT: I didn't read your question carefully enough. Sorry. My problem was that the toolbar wasn't showing up at all.

  • I'm using OS X Mavericks and Safari cannot play videos on Apple website. Any clue?

I'm using OS X Mavericks and Safari cannot play videos on Apple website. Any clue?

Usually, that's due to a DivX plug-in or Safari extension... start with Safari - Preferences - Extensions & switch them off. If nothing there, see Safari - Help - Installed Plug-ins & note any that are for DivX.

  • HOW can I FIX Mavericks and Safari 7.0 to allow Gmail to work?  Gmail has been FUBAR'd since downloading Mavericks today.  Finally found the brute-force logout site to just getr logged out; can't keep doing that.  Other features no longer work, either.

Made big mistake of downloading Mavericks today.
Been struggling with all the FUBARd messes it caused, ALL DAY.
Google basic buttons don't work--can't log out or other basic functions.
    Website use is impaired.
It took almost 3 hours to do a basic online order on one of them--at this rate, I'll be out of business soon, and it's seriously impairing Christmas preparations!
Google Voice/Video are screwed up, had to RE-download their voice/video plugin all over again--again.
    Voice/video quality is REALLY poor.
Lag times in so many things are bad.
Thought this would download WITH the better writing/bookkeeping programs--NOT!
Mac Maps is piddle compaired with GoogleMaps.
The Email program on the desktop is REALLY hard to use, has few useful functions.  It's MAYbe good if one only has ONE email; using it with severeal various email accounts is a serious liability in many ways--like filing, sorting, marking, etc.; no clear way to move email files to an external drive to save, to unload the HD.
HOW can Safari and Mavericks be fixed?
IF not, HOW can I REMOVE Mavericks and get back to Mountain Lion--which was not too great, but certainly more functional than Mavericks!
I NEED my web-based emails to work--NOW...NOT when Mac finally gets around to fixing things sometime later.
I NEED online ordering to work--NOW--not later when Mac finally gets around to fixing things.
PLEASE someone--any help out there?  I couldn't even find but a rare hint that Safari 7.0 even exists--much less that anyone admits it's got problems, nor fixes for it.
What to do?  Throw the whole unit out? Wipe and reboot?  Dumb it back to OS 10? HOW? WHAT?
    [freaking out here...]

    Zak Adelman, LexSchellings,
It's a shiney new computer.  Came loaded with Mountain Lion.
Too busy learning to use the blessed thing, to download anything....except...
The only pluggin that had to be loaded, was Google Voice-Video pluggin, while Lion was still it's OS.  [AND been using the Safari that came already in it.]   Had to do that a couple times--nothing new there--that plug-in had to be re-loaded when using a PC, too--THAT happened even before Google slammed everyone into coerced use of it's Google+.
[I understood from others, that Firefox won't work in Mac units--or I woulda put that in it to see if that solved anything]
This unit seemed a bit sluggish from the git-go, out-of-the-box.
I figured that was probly the local DSL here---rural DSL is...um...our DSL's not something to brag about, but it's the best we can do...
The difference between speed of loading pages, etc. on the new Mac, was --not-- toooo terribly different--though yes, slower on Mac....and chalked it up to my inexperience with Mac.
Been trying to get things up and running for a bit over a month now.
NOT doing very well at it--just barely getting by; rapidly falling behind what needs done [work].
Google worked just --OK-- when OS was Lion, as did the Google voice/video--slower, and voice-video was kinda scratchy or glitchy, but worked enough to --get by--.
    Loading Mavericks, ruined that.
VOIP calls via Google talk have bad echio, static, cut-outs; video calling was pixilated or not working; WAS cued to re-load it's Voice-Video plug-in....which seemed to help a bit, though not very well; it only helped the Voice-Video some, not all--figured that was probably Google issues, less than Mac's, since Google has been increasingly dysfunctional as they have twisted it to be a social media-dominant thing.
[[now seeking an email venue that does what Gmail was good at, including the Voice-video calling, that has no intention of turning itself inside out to be "social"]]
Can't sign out of Gmail or Google+, nor use buttons in upper right corner with the drop-down menu.
NO buttons in upper right corner cluster on Gmail work, except the name+ button to toggle over to Google+---which I don't need! [yeah--THAT's a Google problem!]
Can only switch to HTML version by catching that button as the account signs in--if one fails to be fast enough with their fingers, it goes to Google+; can't get to email unless type in mail.google.com.
Managed to catch that button today, and clicked to use HTML "permanently" until these issues get solved.
    ALSO:
Have fairly new [about 1 year?] HP bluetooth printer-scanner.
BUT, after Mavericks loaded: it HAS the unit listed, HAS drivers for it, HP unit IS listed as default printer, everything --seems-- "go",
.....except Mac keeps posting it's out of ink, and/or, not hooked up, and/or not turned on--even when it is on.
    It's SUPPOSED to be blue-toothing that printer/scanner.
It did it for Lion, before loading Mavericks, even though it was troublesome to get it to work, it at least HAD printed one document when Lion was the OS.
    Thank you...Downloaded EtreCheck:
BTW:  Trying to copy/paste data from that check list, to this post, was achaic:
had to use Edit, select all, then use edit again to get it pasted--the mouse buttons weren't allowed to copy-paste using right-click functions [is this a relic limited-function "thing" with Mac?, or is it because I wanted to keep using this new wirless, non-Mac mouse?].
    Advice?

  • I have a new Macbook Pro running Mavericks and safari consistently freezes. It takes several 'return/enter' presses to get to the page I requested. I have seen other comments and replies on how to fix (clear cache, clear extensions/plug-ins), to no avail.

I have a new macbook pro running mavericks and only using Safari as my browser.  75% of my url requests are 'hung up' and freeze.  I have seen other posts and have tried to clear cache, reset safari, remove extensions, but to no avail.
    Any recommendations?

If it works in a new user account, try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account.  Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

  • I update to maverick and safari freezes

After installing to the new iOS, i keep getting pop-ups asking to unclock keychain, once i input the password it would not recognized it, and to top it off safari will not come on at all it just freezes.

Download and invoke EtreCheck and post the output of that tool here, as a starting point.  Something that was previously installed onto this Mac is apparently incompatible with Mavericks, and has loaded a now-incompatible add-on into Safari.
If you're in a hurry to upload these photos, then create a new login on your Mac via  > System Preferences > Users & Groups and log in there, and perform the content upload from there.

  • Maverick and Safari

I upgraded my MacPro(17") to Maverick and now Safari will not work and I cannot figure out how to download the updated software.  What do I do?

    Try the safe boot?
To do so: Shut down your iMac, Press your power button and then hold the Shift button untill you see a gray progress bar. See how it goes there.

  • OSX Mavericks and Safari Issues

Just a few notes on my rather unpleasant experience upgrading to Mavericks. Normally I don't upgrade immediately but had some time on my hands.
I upgraded a 15" MB Pro that I use for a spare out of office computer. The system came with 10.8 installed and I had very few applications or data on the machine. Immediately after upgrading to 10.9 Safari opened, but would not load any page I typed into the address bar. It would load a page I clicked from bookmarks, but anything I typed did nothing. Then, it mysteriousy worked, then the SGOD took over. After I was able to reset Safari it repeated the same behavior.
Against my better judgement I decided to upgrade Safari on my Mac Pro to see if I could replicate the issue. On neither system do I run anything other than a flash plug in. No extensions, no fluff. The Sr. Advisor verified all plugins were removed from the respective libraries and the MB Pro would still work intermittently, the Mac Pro would freeze the instant I opened Safari. Thank goodness for Time Machine! After demonstrating worse performance on 10.8 I rolled back the upgrade to my most recent backup just a few hours earlier.
I created a brand new user account on the MB Pro to see if it would behave normally. Initially it seemed fine, but then it started to behave erratically again. After fiddling more over the evening I decided it wasn't worth the effort. I copied the minimal data I wanted to save from the MB Pro and booted to Recovery, erased the primary partition and installed a clean version of Mavericks. Everything seems to be working fine now. One major benefit however, is that after I reinstalled my iLife '11 and iWork '09 from DVD (yes, some people still have them) I ran Software Update and every one of those apps was upgraded to the current versions! So Microsoft can take their $200 O/S's and $300 Office Suites and shove them in a very dark, smelly place!
If anyone's had similar issues please feel to add to the thread!

Bless you, Steve.Knepp.  Mazybe you wonder, "Why, BobNovy?  Because ...

  • Mavericks and unmounting external drive issues upon sleep

    Greetings fellow Mavericks users,
I'm hoping someone here can provide some insight as to how to correct the issue I'm experiencing.
    Little background:
I was using 10.6.8 for years on a 2008 Mac Pro.  I saw no reason to update the OS until I recently acquired a USB 3.0 PCI card and an external drive.  In order to use my new hardware, I had no choice but to upgrade to a new version of OSX.  Rather than spend money, I took advantage of the free 10.9.2 upgrade available for my machine.  The upgrade went surprisingly well with no major hiccups or problems encountered.  Yes, a few apps and programs I had running prior to the upgrade were no longer compatible but in the grand scheme of things, my Mac Pro was still alive and kicking along with my most important programs and data.  In fact, the upgrade to 10.9.2 fixed a sleep issue I had with 10.6.8 which required the use of an app called PleaseSleep.  I don't need that app anymore as the machine goes to sleep and wakes up fine.
Now, on to my dilemma.  Prior to the upgrade, I was using an external USB 2.0 drive to house media that I'd share between multiple network devices around the house via SMB (AFP stinks in this regard, hence my refusal to use it); i.e. BoxeeBox.  I had run out of space on the USB2 drive hence the need to move everything to my new external USB3 drive that's connected to an internal USB3 PCI controller. The first problem I ran into was that Mavericks now uses Apple's own iteration of Samba (SMB2).  After a bit of head scratching and research, I used an application called SMBUp as a replacement to Apple's SMB implementation.  That's one problem solved.  The next thing that I kept running into was that whenever the machine would sleep then wake up again, I'd get an annoying "Disk was not properly ejected" error message.  After more head scratching and research, I've discovered that this appears to be a bug in OSX and how the OS interfaces with 3rd party USB controllers.  Fine.  I purchased a small app called Jettison which for all intents and purposes unmounts any external drives automatically before allowing the system to sleep.  This is where my long-winded (apologies) description above starts to come into play.  Now that I have the SMB issue figured out and am using Jettison to eject this USB3 drive when the machine sleeps, I've discovered that I'll still get the "Disk did not properly eject" error message despite Jettison IF there are users connected to the USB3 media drive.  Is there a work around this where I can either get Jettison or Mavericks to kill the network connection to the share drive before it's unmounted prior to the machine sleeping?
    TL:DR?
Using Jettison with Mavericks, I'm still getting "Disk did not eject properly" when waking the machine from sleep mode.  Any way to fix this?
Thanks in advance for any help/suggestions provided.

I had the same problem with Time Machine and solved it by enabling "Enable Power Nap" in Energy Saver:
    System Preferences...
    Energy Saver
    Restore Defaults
Check "Enable Power Nap: While sleeping, your Mac can back up using Time Machine and periodically check for new email, calendar, and other iCloud updates."

  • Big ask! Is there any way to get MS Silverlight and NowTV to work with Mavericks and Safari 7?

Now amount of frigging will allow me to run NowTV in any web-browser on Mavericks. I've tried all browsers (latest versions in every instance) without the slightest luck. Even delving into the new Plugins security feature of Safari 7 will not get Silverlight to work properly.
