Mavericks and unmounting external drive issues upon sleep

Greetings fellow Mavericks users,
I'm hoping someone here can provide some insight as to how to correct the issue I'm experiencing.
Little background:
I was using 10.6.8 for years on a 2008 Mac Pro. I saw no reason to update the OS until I recently acquired a USB 3.0 PCI card and an external drive. In order to use my new hardware, I had no choice but to upgrade to a new version of OSX. Rather than spend money, I took advantage of the free 10.9.2 upgrade available for my machine. The upgrade went surprisingly well with no major hiccups or problems encountered. Yes, a few apps and programs I had running prior to the upgrade were no longer compatible but in the grand scheme of things, my Mac Pro was still alive and kicking along with my most important programs and data. In fact, the upgrade to 10.9.2 fixed a sleep issue I had with 10.6.8 which required the use of an app called PleaseSleep. I don't need that app anymore as the machine goes to sleep and wakes up fine.
Now, on to my dilemma. Prior to the upgrade, I was using an external USB 2.0 drive to house media that I'd share between multiple network devices around the house via SMB (AFP stinks in this regard, hence my refusal to use it); i.e. BoxeeBox. I had run out of space on the USB2 drive hence the need to move everything to my new external USB3 drive that's connected to an internal USB3 PCI controller. The first problem I ran into was that Mavericks now uses Apple's own iteration of Samba (SMB2). After a bit of head scratching and research, I used an application called SMBUp as a replacement to Apple's SMB implementation. That's one problem solved. The next thing that I kept running into was that whenever the machine would sleep then wake up again, I'd get an annoying "Disk was not properly ejected" error message. After more head scratching and research, I've discovered that this appears to be a bug in OSX and how the OS interfaces with 3rd party USB controllers. Fine. I purchased a small app called Jettison which for all intents and purposes unmounts any external drives automatically before allowing the system to sleep. This is where my long-winded (apologies) description above starts to come into play. Now that I have the SMB issue figured out and am using Jettison to eject this USB3 drive when the machine sleeps, I've discovered that I'll still get the "Disk did not properly eject" error message despite Jettison IF there are users connected to the USB3 media drive. Is there a work around this where I can either get Jettison or Mavericks to kill the network connection to the share drive before it's unmounted prior to the machine sleeping?
TL:DR?
Using Jettison with Mavericks, I'm still getting "Disk did not eject properly" when waking the machine from sleep mode. Any way to fix this?

I had the same problem with Time Machine and solved it by enabling "Enable Power Nap" in Energy Saver:
System Preferences...
Energy Saver
Restore Defaults
Check "Enable Power Nap: While sleeping, your Mac can back up using Time Machine and periodically check for new email, calendar, and other iCloud updates."

Mavericks and WD external drives

I checked through a list posted on the forum that listed locations of WD software ( I was sure I didn't have any installed as the drives were formatted before use as storage dtrives for iTunes ) and I don't sem to have any WD software installed on the internal drive in libraries etc either 'main or user'.
Do you think it's safe to install Mavericks and not have the drives wiped or corrupted as is noted in some threads ?

Everything seems OK with Mavericks and WD external HD

I'm reading about tons of problems with Mavericks and WD external drives. Most mention WD software glitches.
I have a 2T WD My Book USB external HD. After upgrading to Mavericks (two weeks now), I haven't experienced and data loss at all, and all my partitions have retained their names and icons. They all check out OK in Disk Utility. I did have a Finder glitch once where I could not Copy/Paste any file over several several MB., (error 8057) but a restart fixed it. As far as know, that was only from one partition. I have had some video issues launching .avi and .mkv with an 'app not found' error. Making VLC the default for the those files in Get Info seems to have solved that (except the icons remain Quicktime). Previously when launching .avi files QuickTime did not launch and attempt to convert it.
For now, I'm regarding the video thing as a separate issue.
When I got my WD USB ext. a year ago, I did not install ANY WD software. I simply formatted to HFS+ and partitioned in Disk Utility and was good to go. Is it safe to say that since I don't have any of that pre-Mavericks software installed (I double checked with Spotlight), that my external drive is safe? Or should I run out and get a solid state drive ASAP? Is it also fairly safe to think that since I went through the upgrade unmolested and it's been two weeks now that everything is probably OK?

Yup, that's exactly what I meant. It comes preinstalled.

Windows 7, iTunes 10 and Seagate FreeAgant External Drive issues

I'm having some serious problems with making the three mentioned above to go along with one another. The thing with my iTunes library is that it had started to take up some much of my PC's internal hard drive space that I decided to move it all to my Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex 3TB external drive. The problem itself is that while syncing my iPhone with the contents on that drive, iTunes is, more often than not, non-responsive. It simply freezes up for longer periods of time. And when it unfreezes, it moves forward with the the syncing process for just a bit. Moreover, it's not only iTunes that freezes like this. The same thing happens with the external drive and even, which seems oddest to me, Safari. It all makes the syncing process extremely slow in regards of transferring files to or from my 32GB 3GS iPhone. For example, I have started syncing my iPhone some time after 10A.M. Right now it's nearly 4 P.M., and iTunes has optimized (and only optimized) 1,205 out of 8,303 photos. This is just a nightmare... :/ Worth mentioning here is that I keep all my photos and the iPod Photo Cache folder on the external drive as well.
I had heard that Windows 7 has some communication issues with various peripheral devices, and I am not sure whether this is the case or not. I'm also not sure whether this is a Windows 7-related problem only, or does iTunes contribute to it as well.
If anyone was able to help me resolve this problem, I would be really grateful

I must say it's a bit of a relief to know someone is in the very same situation and that one another can relate. Writing my previous post, I forgot about polydorus' question regarding any constant backup process running in the background, and so I can answer this question here: No, there are no backup processes running in the background. This question, however, made me wonder what else could be slowing the external drive/iTunes down. There is a Dashboard software related to this specific external drive which starts along with every system startup. I quit this software before starting the syncing process again (I got an electricity cut off during the previous syncing, so I simply had to start it all over again :/), and now iTunes doesn't show in the Task Manager as "Not Responding". At least it doesn't happen until another application turns non-responsive, when it does, iTunes and Safari turn non-responsive as well.
But even though iTunes shows as "Running" most of the time now, the syncing process is still as slow as h-e-l-l :/ I began this last syncing yesterday at 8:09P.M., and right now it's nearly 12:00P.M. :/ iTunes looks as if it was running, since the rotating arrows icon next to my iPhone name on the left pane don't stop, but iTunes stops from time to time, without going any further with optimizing photos - it looks as if it was waiting until it could access the external drive.
I don't know what else could be slowing everything down like this :/ Could it be iPhone itself, which slows down the communication between the PC and the external drive, because it's also connected to the USB port, taking up some of its bandwidth?
igbg: My driver is running on 6.1.7601.17514 drivers' version. Even if there is a newer version of these drivers (which, basing on your post, I guess wouldn't solve the problem :/), I can't update it now, while syncing
P.S. As for my music, I keep it on my D drive, and have no problems with playing it. It's only the whole rest (books, movies and photos) which is stored on the external drive

External Drives Won't Sleep

Since upgrading to Leopard none of my external drives go into sleep mode when not being accessed. They do when connected to other Macs... so that points to the iMac.
Tried resetting the SMC and also 'put hard disk(s) to sleep' is checked in energy saver. Any suggestions greatly appreciated. Many thanks

I have the exact same problem. I have my energy setting to put my drives to sleep when possible. I also have an external Firewire drive. In Tiger the external drive was sleeping unless I was accessing it. Now with Leopard the drive constantly wakes up. Just now I hit the back button on Safari and the drive woke up. Crazy.
Unfortunately I have no idea what is causing this, but do have the same issue. I see you excluded them from Spotlight. I just tried that and will see what happens. Are you using Firewire or USB for the external drive? I'm going to switch to UBS and see if that makes a difference.

Serious problems after Mavericks installation with External Drive Lacie P9220.

Experiencing serious problems after Mavericks installation with External Drive Lacie P9220 1TB. Mac Finder totally locked!
I had to format the External hard drive with a Windows PC (fat32), then format again with my IMac (mac Journal.) and hopefully restored data from time machine backup.
So far so good but system looks unstable. Some software were not able to write on the hard drive.Some strange things happens. With Mountain Lion never had an even minor issue.
I read many discussion regarding problems with WD, just wondering if anyone had the same problems with Lacie and if there is any tip to solve the
problem.

Unfortunately I couldn't find a solution because the article refers to whom have configured the drive with included software and drivers that came with the drive.
This is not my case, I never used any third party soft ...only OS X disk utility ...

Restoring time machine files from unmounted external drive

Help please..
I have a time machine backup I need to restore. It's a backup from an external drive that has failed.
When I go "enter time machine," I can't see the contents from the external drive anymore to restore it.. because the external drive isn't mounted. It's not mounted because it has failed. I can see when I browse the TM backup directly via finder there are files from the amounted drive in the backup... as I'd expect.
So... How do I restore drives from an unmounted external drive?
Do I need to buy a new drive and name it the same as the old drive? Then will it show up?

While in Time Machine, press the key combination shift-command-C. The front window will show all mounted volumes. All snapshots should now be accessible. Select the one you want and navigate to the files you want to restore.

If you have a considerable photograph and/or movie collection you may want to consider off loading those to the EHD too. Here are Apple's article showing how handle iTunes & iPhoto libraries.

When in iPhoto for iOS you can share your photo to iTunes and then connect your iPad to your computer and use the file sharing window to move the photo to any connected hard disk. Sharing to iTunes is the only way to maintain original file size when sharing a photo in iPhoto for iOS.

500GB WD My Book external drive won't sleep!

I recently bought a 500GB WD My Book external drive. I formated it as Mac OS Extended and ran a complete backup of my Mac and other external drive. Now the activity light blinks non stop and the drive stays running even though its not being accessed. I've also checked the security of my network thinking maybe somebody on the outside was getting access. I don't get it. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance!

Open the Spotlight pane of System Preferences and add that drive to the list of locations not to index if it isn't already there.

HT4878 Why is this data chart Timeline multi colored (in About/Storage) and the external drive is only pink?

1. When viewing the Storage Timeline for my Macbook and the External Drive for the Time Machine backup instead of multi-colored bars the data is only showing a one pink one. Is that because it is all "backup" on the external? 2. Is the discrepancy in size the OS being left out? Thanks.

Time Machine makes full backups of the hard drive. If you want to change this, you can open System Preferences > Time Machine > Options, and add excluded items. However, I recommend you to keep backing up the whole drive, so you will be able to restore the whole backup in case of a hard disk failure

Discussion regarding un-unmountable external drives and more..

I have a Mac OS Extended (Journaled) formatted LaCie 2TB external USB 2.0 hard drive which I use for backup and file storage with my MBP running snow leopard. Some times when working extremely large folders at work, I actually work right of the hard drive and it works very well. But I have observed an increasingly annoying problem.
If I keep the drive active and working with whatever for a while and then decide to eject the disk, this almost always causes headaches. Either I get these warnings that the disk cannot be ejected because; Mail is using the drive, Safari is using the drive, Itunes is using the drive...... or some other app. This is annoying but can usually be resolved by simply quitting these apps. My question is; why does this occur? I see no reason for these applications to be using the disk? I haven't found a conclusive response to this question anywhere, always different suggestions/ideas/solutions? Does someone actually know what is causing this behavior and if it can be resolved "permanently"?
On the occasional time, quitting the applications suggested to use the drive doesn't allow me to eject the disc. It is still in use, but no apps are listed and the only way to eject is forcefully. I have tried:
sudo lsof | grep -i <filename>
And yes, I had some interesting results. Although spotlight is not indicating indexing in progress i see that spotlight is using the drive. I know you can add the drive under privacy in spotlight preferences and this eliminates this issue. But there is also "keychain access" using some file on the drive? I just cannot see why this would happen? When this happens, there is no way to safely remove the drive. I have tried relaunching finder, both through dock (ctrloptionmouse click) and terminal (killall Finder), but this does not resolve the eject issue. I have also tried stoping and relaunching SystemUIServer which was suggested somewhere, but this did not resolve the issue. Neither did umount volume or hdiutil eject /Volumes/GusExt/, it only works with -force which I would like to avoid.
Why would anything BUT spotlight use anything on the hard drive? And is there a way to safely kill any and every process using the external drive so that it can be ejected safely?
I find this interesting since it seems to be a common phenomenon but I haven't found a single clear cut explanation or solution to these issues? What makes it more interesting is that I, at home, have my own personal WD external drive with photos and my CD collection stored on it. This drive is NTFS-3G formatted through MACFUSE and NTFS-3G. This drive has never exhibited the same behavior, the only difference between the discs, except the file system, is that the LaCie contains time machine backups. But since I do not have time machine active, I don't see why this would effect the unmount process.
Another topic I would like some feedback on is corrupted files. When this occurs on a NTFS formated disk used on mac, these cannot be removed. And since Mac and NTFS doesn't play nice, I haven't found a way to resolve this. Disk utility wont work, neither will ntfsfix. The only way around this that I have found is plugging the drive into a windows machine and running chkdsk X: -F
Is there any available alternative for this on Mac that actually works with NTFS disks?
Hoping for some interesting feedback on this from anyone interested

Hi again Kappy. Thanks for your reply.
1. No, none of the files on the drive are being sent by mail, mail should not have any interest whatsoever in the drive.
2. Most files are created by AMBER 10 and AMBERTOOLS 1.4, molecular dynamics simulation packages. These are UNIX based and I only work with these files from terminal, no GUI. They are created on different servers, downloaded to my MBP and transferred (at least most often) to the LaCie for storage.
3. I have applications stored on the drive through "time machine backups", but I do not run any apps from the drive. Only locally on my MBP, all terminal based UNIX programs are "pathed" correctly to my internal drive.
4. As above, time machine backups my apps, but to my knowledge should not run them from the LaCie drive! Only from my local drive...
5. Disk permissions are full read and write for all. Some files come from /usr/local/ and are specific for my account. But I have taken the habit of "chmod 777" them so I can always access them since I'm the only one with physical access to the LaCie drive.
6. It has at some point, I see no indication of indexing being made in OS X, only through "lsof" where I usually can see spotlight and keychain accessing files. But I have now put the drive under "privacy" from spotlight so it should not index at all now.
7. Yes, once a week a manually perform a time machine backup of my local drive onto the LaCie. Between backups I disable time machine.
8. nine times out of ten I can eject the disc without warning if I first quit mail, iTunes and safari. Same goes if I get the warning, exit the app and then try to eject again. One time out of ten it doesn't seem to matter if I quit all the apps except finder, and ever relaunch finder. Some undetermined apps is still claimed to use the drive. Then the only solution of to force eject.

HOW TO FIX MOUNT ISSUE ON OSX 10.8.3 AND ENCRYPTED EXTERNAL DRIVES

OSX version 10.8.3 doesn't mount my encrypted external drive (MAC OSX extended journalled encrypted). When I enter my password the window greys out and stays there forever without mounting the drive. I have two seperate drives on this HDD ( one Fat and the other one journaled encrypted) the Fat one mounts without any roblem. The only option in the first aid tab is verify disk and everything else is greyed out. Resault of verify is "Error: This disk needs to be repaired. Click Repair Disk." but I can't run repair since it is greyout.

If the volume won't mount, you can't repair it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below to select it:
diskutil list; echo; diskutil cs list
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C).
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V).

External drive no longer sleeping

Just upgraded from Mountain Lion to Mavericks on my Mid 2011 iMac. Prior to the upgrade, whenever the iMac went to sleep, the external drive (G-Technology G-Drive Firewire) went to sleep too. Now, the G-Drive doesn't sleep. Any idea how to fix this?

Send Apple feedback is a joke.
I have spent the last 3 months with their AE's both on the phone and via email. I have ran programs on my iMacs to help them gather information.
The last word I got from them was to switch back to my old OS which I did do on my Mac Mini server. The only reason I got feedback was because I am still under full warranty.
They know, believe me they know about the issue, but you are right about their silence on it.

Unmounting External Drives

I'm writing here in hopes to be heard by the Apple Gurus.
With all the new features like Time Machine in Leopard I find it has become much harder be able to just simply unmount an external drive when you need to. I'm using Leopard on a Macbook, with Time Machine, but when I need to take the laptop out, and thus unmount the external drive, I hardly get anything but the "applications are currently using the drive" message, even when the drive was in sleep mode just before I tried to unmount it. So it means you either have to quit every single application,and wait for the drive to see it's not used anymore, or shut down the computer, in order to unplug. So here's my suggestion, actually two : 1) when the drive is in use, please show the name of the app using it, making it simpler to solve the issue in order to unmount ; 2) and why not an button like "terminate all uses of this drive and unmount".
Thank you in advance for taking notice of this, it would save a lot of time for laptop owners using external drives.
