Mavericks auto-corrects words before I finish typing

10.9.2, 1.8 GHz i7 mid-2011 MBA, 4GB RAM
I love using 'Correct spelling automatically' as it saves me a lot of back-pedalling when typing.
Problem is, it sometimes kicks in while I'm still typing a word. For example, I'll start typing 'found', but as soon as I've typed 'fo', Mavericks sometimes corrects it to 'of'. So by the time I've finished typing the word, I end up with 'ofund'. Usually though, I see the correction appear iOS style as I type 'fo', which then disappears as I complete the word 'found'.
Is anyone else seeing this? Does anyone have a solution?
Thanks for reading!

Checked it, 'fo' is not there. I use custom text substitutions quite heavily. I believe them to be separate from the automatic spelling corrections (like 'the' for 'teh') which don't appear in the text substitutions list.
The issue as I see it is Mavericks shouldn't change anything, correction or substitution, while typing a word. Space, return and a trackpad click are delimiters that tells Mavericks that typing of a word has finished, and the substitution/correction can be applied. In my case, corrections sometimes appear before I do any of those.
I could add 'fo' as a substitution for 'fo', but that was just one example. It seems to happen with random pre-delimiter 'errors' at random times.

  • Ipod touch - auto correction / word completion when typing ...

    (ipod touch 16GB; Firmware 2.0)
I would like to switch off the auto completion / auto correction, because its moth bothersome when i'm typing notes or writing emails. Is there anyway to switch this off?

When an autocorrection pops up and you want to use it, just type a space, punctuation mark, or return character.
    From page 28 of http://manuals.info.apple.com/enUS/iPod_touch_3.1_UserGuide.pdf
    Accept or reject dictionary suggestions:
To reject the suggested word, finish typing the word as you want it, then tap the “x” to dismiss the suggestion before typing anything else. Each time you reject a suggestion for the same word, iPod touch becomes more likely to accept your word.
To use the suggested word, type a space, punctuation mark, or return character.

  • Pages auto corrects words when I don't want it to and will not accept my word the way I want it spelled.

I am writng a paper and I have spelled someones name the correct way but pages keeps auto correcting it to something else. • Find Bar (Crtl F) issue. Bar keeps clearing itself before i finish typing what i want.?

When there is a word on the screen that matches what i type (Eg: What), it automatically clears the bar and usually jump straight onto google search bar or the URL bar halfway through a word, so i'd be typing there all of a sudden, rather than staying on the Find Bar until i press enter to search.
I have not done anything except upgrade from 3.6 to 4. It is consistantly like this. with no exception. The best i can do is get a word typed. Does anyone know whats wrong?

  • Having trouble renaming files - focus is lost before i finish typing

Its a little difficult to explain but when i select a file and press Enter to rename it (or click on the filename again) the filename becomes editable.
I begin typing the new filename and sometimes (often) its as if i had pressed Enter again to finish renaming the file - but i hadnt.
This can be very frustrating because i dont always notice and weird things can happen like if i am pressing the delete key while it happens i end up a few folders above the folder i am working in.
Has anyone else come across this?
Any advice would be much appreciated.
    Thanks!

Hi there, Thanks for your response.
I know it seems likely that i could be accidentally touching the touchpad but i just tested again to be absolutely sure:
I selected a file with the mouse (no hands on or near keyboard), then i pressed the Enter key to make the filename editable (with one finger - not touching any other keys etc) then after a second it was as if i had pressed the enter key again... but i didnt. I wasnt touching the keyboard or mouse.
It didnt happen every time i tried though. I used the same file and tried 3 times. The first 2 it didnt automatically appear as if i had pressed the enter key again, only the third time.
    I appreciate any feedback.
    Thanks

  • Spell Checker errors & auto-correct gone mad

I have had a problem for awhile now with bad spell checking.
If I make a typo, the softeware learns the mispelled word - and edits properly spelled instances of the word to be wrong later.
    ("the softeware" - I don't know if its Apple's or a 3rd party's).
I am getting "Teh" errors, transpositions & complete case changes, for example words ending in "-ed" being changed
to "-ing" endings here & there. A few other recurring ones, as well.
Its acting like a keylogger associated with firmware in the darn keyboard!
I've run checks for spyware & keyloggers & they came up negative.
I can't tell if its in the core OS softeware, or being driven by a third party test drive.
I can't seem to shut off enough spell checking to solve the problem.
Example: the "e" in softeware above was an autocorrect, not what I typed & saw typed.
The corrections are more than "ie" & "ei" transpositions & sometimes involved letters across the keyboard.
Any ideas or solutions for this? Am I the only person with this problem?
(I tried to find a close enough topic, but they were either old & archived, or not really quite my issue).

How do you mean "don't know what software I'm using?"
If the phenomenon occurs across most apps that are word intensive, then it appears not to be tied to any one.
Something is recognizing a problem not there & "correcting" it, because I can see it happen & its not all due to operator error typos.
I gather there's predominantly one spell checker engine across most applications, not one for each, if the symptoms are broad. IF that can be pinned on a "spellcheck" function. It isn't strictly a spellcheck.
"Substitutions" yes is more accurate than calling it true spellchecking & I might be rmisrepresenting the phenomenon to call it that.
Whatever is causing it, is learning & auto-correcting words that were may or may not be wrong. 2 letter pairs is mostly what happens. Or a capitalization of the 2nd letter in a word, to match the first letter: "IT" paired at the beginning of a sentence is a common manifestation.
I can't find anything that could be left from an uninstalled test driven application.
Your pointing to "Language & Text" may be valuable. The "ie" & "ei" substitutions are fairly common & German was one of the language options turned on, along with French & Italian – although I'm not sure what that panel even controls. I'm removing all options except English.
I haven't seen a lot about this kind of thing on here, so I am assuming that its rare & likely something not part of the Apple suite of applications. I'm simply trying to narrow down what's going on.

  • Word Mole auto submitting words

how come word mole, after an upgrade, is now auto-submitting words before I'm ready.  i.e. I type "st" with the intent to form the word "stand" but it auto-submits after I type "st".  Very frustrating!  I can't figure how to change this in the game options and I'm kind of addicated to the game.

    Hi!
For application issues, your best point of contact should be the developer of that application.
I tried searching for contact details of  Word Mole from http://appworld.blackberry.com/webstore/ to no avail. The app does not show in the latest app world catalog.

  • Spell-check without auto-correction? Why not?

    Why can't we choose spell-check without auto-correction?

    Steven,
As I typed that Reply, your Spellcheck thread (for the forums), came immediately to mind.
That was one of the prime motivators in wanting a dictionary, that could be customized.
Over the years, I have migrated my WordPerfection dictionary through several versions, 'cause I have added a ton of wine, food, video and photo terms, and would hate to have to redo all of those, especially the ones using multi-national characters.
Yeah, maybe inclusion of "Photoshop," "Premiere," "InDesign," etc., etc., would be expected, or at least hoped for.

  • Undo auto-correction for typing particular words into Pages

This is starting to drive me nuts - whenever I type the word "march" Pages automatically capitalizes it to "March". Is there any way to stop it from capitalizing this word without turning off auto capitalizing?
I realise it may sound trivial but I am using this word a fair bit and it just takes up time having to constantly go back and correct it, then I have to be careful not to change the sentence or it auto-corrects back again.
Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

(K_Gal: This primarily addresses RHPC's issue, but does include some comments regarding yours)
    B
    RHPC:
Yours is a different issue than that described in the initial post in this thread.
Pages has several auto-correction features, all set in the auto-correction pane of Pages Preferences. The two indicated by the arrows are the significant ones in this thread as started and in your hijack of this thread.
Fix capitalization (blue arrow) applies a format (CAPITAL or UPPER) to the initial letters of 'sentences' and words identified as 'proper nouns' (such as "March") in the spelling dictionary. It performs no action on 'words' that have been typed with initial capitals.
In the examples above, the first two lines were typed with 'Fix capitalization' unchecked. The second pair of lines were typed using exactly the same keystrokes as the first, but with 'Fix capitalization' checked. Note that both occurrences of 'will' are the same in each set.
"Automatically use spell checker suggestions" (red arrow) does precisely what it says: If a 'word' is not found in the spelling dictionary, the spell checker will make a 'best guess' and suggest that as a possible replacement. If the 'Automatically use…" box is checked, then Pages will immediately accept the first suggestion, replacing the 'questionable word' with the spell checkers first ('best') suggestion.
There are at least two solutions to this issue:
Uncheck the box and don't use auto-correction. (works for either of these issues)
Teach the spellchecker the correct spelling of the Polish name. (does not work in the case of march/March, which is part of the base dictionary)
    To do this:
Go Pages (menu) > Preferences... Auto-Correction
    Uncheck the "Automatically use…" box.
    Close Preferences
Open a new Pages word processing document.
    Type the Polish name.
Ensure that the spelling and capitalization is correct.
Right click on the name and choose Learn Spelling.
    Go Pages > Preferences… Auto-Correction
    Recheck the "Automatically use…" box
    Close Preferences.
    Done.
Pages (and other applications using the system's spell checker dictionary) will now recognize the spelling of this name and will not 'correct' it.
(K_Gal: Unfortunately, when I tried this on "march" the contextual menu did not include the Learn Spelling option , probably because the dictionary already 'knew' how to spell "March". I'd suggest using the Provide Pages Feedback item in the Pages message to report this to apple, and request a feature enhancement to the Fix capitalization feature.)
    Regards,
    Barry

  • When I try to bookmark a web page, Firefox will frequently save the bookmark to the default location, before I have finished typing the description

To bookmark a page, I click on the BOOKMARK menu, then click on BOOKMARK THIS PAGE. I start typing the description of the page in the NAME field.
Frequently, before I can finish typing the description, Firefox will close the popup window, saving the bookmark to the default location. At this point, I repeat the procedure to add a bookmark, finish typing the description, and specify the correct folder location.

  • Text auto-correct grabbing words from gmail / etc.

I'm not sure if this is a Gingerbread issue, but this is a problem that I was introduced to when I got my Xperia PLAY.
The on-screen QWERTY keyboard lends itself to frequent typos.  Since I started using the Xperia, the auto-correct dictionary has been automatically synced and populated with various words that it apparently grabbed out of my gmail, email, contacts, address book, or elsewhere.   This includes names, segments of email addresses, already misspelled words, etc.
This has made the auto-correct function useless on my phone, and makes text messaging a convoluted and futile chore that' I'd simply rather not do.
For example, when I'm trying to send a text to someone asking them, "what time?"  -- I commonly typo "time" as "timr."
Now, auto-correct on my Xperia always wants to change "timr" into "TimeBomb4321" -- which is a segment of an email address out of my address book.
And, there's apparently no way to turn this off.
There's no way to toggle this under "Accounts & sync."
"User Dictionary" under Settings only includes words that I have manually added to it.
    HOW DO I FIX THIS???

    Hi chuckk,
I understand the importance of having a streamlined text experience.  I would suggest deleting some of the auto-saved words from the dictionary. Settings>Language & Keyboard>User Dictionary.  Press on hold the word you no longer want and the select delete.  I am hopeful this information is helpful.  Please let me know if you need further assistance.
