Mavericks boot takes 5 minutes after Boot Camp

The boot of my MacBook Air is taking too much time, about five minutes according to my tests.
Yesterday I reinstalled OS X and then installed Windows 8.1 on a Boot Camp partition. After choosing the boot disk from OS X settings, the boot of my OS X partition takes some minutes, instead of the previous 11-12 seconds. The boot stops on Mac logo and loading indicator for 5 minutes.
Instead, Windows is loading very fast.
Any solution?

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
          View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen. Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then take one of the actions that you're having trouble with. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.

  • MBP 8,1 (10.9.5) freezes approx. 20 minutes after booting.

If I remove one of the two RAM-modules and the MBP runs with only 2GB of RAM, it seems to work, although all processes are much slower. TC backup is not working and when trying to download Mavericks again, the computer freezes again. The freeze-problem does not occur under 10.6, here the MBP works fine. Any suggestions? Am I facing a RAM-module or HDD-problem here? Or something completely different?

Just to clarify the problem: the system only freezes when both 2GB-RAM-modules are installed. If I run the MBP on only 2GBs (no matter, which one), the system does not freeze.

  • Osx Lion memory leak: my MacBook pro is usable only 10 minutes after boot

    Hi all,
10 minutes after boot it works just fine, but then it slows down and take centuries to open any application. Checked with Activity monitor:
on a boot, no user applications running: Free memory: 2,35 Gb, Wired: 459,7 Mb, Active 3 Mb, Inactive: 1,18 Gb
In 10 minutes, idle: Free memory: 8,4 Mb, Wired: 468,1 Mb, Active 2,36 Gb, Inactive: 1,17 Gb
Somehow all the free memory leaks to the active one, without me doing anything. I tried launching several programs to see if the memory will get adjusted accordingly, but it does not. Time machine is stopped. Tried disk repair is CMD+R mode, fixed permissions, killed most of the user processes - no success.
I've installed Lion on top of Snow Leopard a month ago and didnt feel any problems so far... Now my MacBook pro 2,4 GHz is completely useless, finally, after 6 years of seamless work :( Thanks, Lion
Any ideas how to deal with it?
    Thanks,

I do not see anything like this on my system which would lead me to believe you may have a defective installation. So, my suggestion:
Install or Reinstall Lion from Scratch
If possible backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive.
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Erase the hard drive:
Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Install button.
Note: You can also re-download the Lion installer by opening the App Store application. Hold down the OPTION key and click on the Purchases icon in the toolbar. You should now see an active Install button to the right of your Lion purchase entry. There are situations in which this will not work. For example, if you are already booted into the Lion you originally purchased with your Apple ID or if an instance of the Lion installer is located anywhere on your computer.

My Mac OS Lion 10.7 FileVaulted HD does not boot, prohibitory sign, stop sign appears some minutes after boot starts. Disk Utility repair shows four error messages:
Unable to bootstrap transaction group 2517: inconsistent crosscheck
    No valid commit checkpoint found
The volume xxxxxxxxxxxxxx(here it shows physical volume number) was found corrupt and can not be repaired.
Problems were encountered during repair of the partition map
Error: Storage system verify or repair failed.
(the same with 2518, 2519 and 2520 transaction group)
I suppose it is serious bug in Mac OS Lion managing FileVault and wonder what the help could be?

Most likely culprit is your Lacie drives which are notorious for flaky power supplies which cause just the sort of erratic behaviour that you describe. Have had similar issues myself. Lacie has been good about replacing my power converter-- twice. If you have seven of them, good luck finding the bad one or more. Like I said, the behaviour is erratic. Sometimes it'll work sometimes not. I can't comment on Samsung drives because I've never used them and have never heard anything about them. Same with Softraid. Why not just use Disk Utility. Sounds like you're ready for an external hardware raid. This will be much faster, much more reliable, and may even be cheaper than seven firewire drives. Check out G Tech, and Maxx Digital for starters.
    Best of luck
    Terry

My IPAD keeps restarting a few minutes after booting up. It keeps doing it again and again, after the same period of time. Grateful for any help!

If the above doesn't work, force iPad into Recovery Mode.
    1. Turn off iPad
    2. Turn on computer and launch iTunes (make sure you have the latest version of iTune)
    3. Plug USB cable into computer's USB port
    4. Hold Home button down and plug the other end of cable into docking port.
DO NOT RELEASE BUTTON until you see picture of iTunes and plug
    5. Release Home button.
    ON COMPUTER
    6. iTunes has detected iPad in recovery mode. You must restore this iPad before it can be used with iTunes.
    7. Select "Restore iPad"...
    Note:
    1. Data will be lost if you do not have backup
    2. You must follow step 1 to step 4 VERY CLOSELY.

  • HT1899 How do i boot to mac after boot camp

How do i boot back to mac after boot camp? I was in the middle of installing windows 7 when i received an error message saying the partition needs to be in a diff format ( NFTS ). I tried restarting my mac but now its saying "no bootable device - insert boot disk"

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
You have to format the volume using NTFS in Windows installer. After you've installed Windows, press X key while your computer is starting to start in Mac OS X

  • Can not boot into OSX after boot camp installation and resizing of Macintosh HD

So from the beginning what I was trying to do was set up my iMac (27-inch, Late 2013)  with boot camp so that I could play some old windows based games that can not be played in Parallels.
I went through the Boot camp process and everything set up just fine.
I had both OS X Yosemite 10.10.2 and Windows 8 Professional running but as I was installing games on to boot camp I discovered I did not allocate enough space and needed to extend the Boot Camp partition.
I used boot camp utility to set OS X as the default start up disk and had it restart
I launched into OS X and used Disk Utility to shrink Macintosh HD another 120GB
Restarted again holding option and launched into Windows
Used the disk management in windows to try and extend the boot camp partition into the unallocated space.
It was not an option to extend it so I tried to create a new simple volume from the unallocated space then delete it and try to extend it again.
It still was not an option.
From there I went to restart again while holding option and the only options I had were 10.10 Recovery and Windows
I tried using disk utility in recovery and Macintosh hd now only showed disk0s2
I tried to verify and it could not verify
I tried to repair and it could not repair.
I put the iMac in target disk mode and using a thunderbolt cable I tried using disk utility from my MacBook Pro (13-inch Mid 2012)
Verifying volume “disk2s2”Verifying file system.** /dev/rdisk2s2
Invalid BS_jmpBoot in boot block: 000000
File system check exit code is 8.Error: This disk needs to be repaired. Click Repair Disk.
Verify and Repair volume “disk2s2”Repairing file system.** /dev/rdisk2s2
Invalid BS_jmpBoot in boot block: 000000
File system check exit code is 8.Updating boot support partitions for the volume as required.Error: Disk Utility can’t repair this disk. Back up as many of your files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backed-up files.
This is the same error I got on my iMac
I used terminal diskutil list and got:
    /dev/disk2
       #:                       TYPE NAME                    SIZE       IDENTIFIER
       0:      GUID_partition_scheme                        *1.0 TB     disk2
       1:                        EFI EFI                     209.7 MB   disk2s1
       2:       Microsoft Basic Data                         799.3 GB   disk2s2
       3:                  Apple_HFS Recovery HD             650.0 MB   disk2s3
4:       Microsoft Basic Data BOOTCAMP                70.3 GB    disk2s4
I can see that Macintosh HD was disk2s2 but it now shows its Microsoft Basic Data.
I did not format this partition and it was working fine till I restarted the computer after resizing Macintosh HD.
I am not sure what I can do to fix this.
I've found multiple articles about similar issues, but the issue thet they have was that they could not boot to Windows instead of my issue not booting to OS X

    ****************    Update    *****************
From the Windows Partition using Disk Management I can see that the drive is still labeled Macintosh HD and that all of my data is there.
I have a complete backup so i'm not worried so much about the data.
What I'm most interested in is trying to solve this issue because I'd like to continue using boot camp and I actually work with mac computers and would like to be able to help others if this issue arrises again.

I have strange problem with CPU drain. For most of the time 4 cpu (of 8 in total) cores run at 100% after few minutes when system boots (by conky).

I already do some solutions posted by Blackwind in topic of kworkers https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 3#p1055463 but without any results.
If there is any information, logs and other debugs info I could provide ask me about them. Debbuging this problem looks like iceberg to me. There are so many possibilities that I don't known how to even start.
What could be a reason of this cpu drain and how to debug it?
    thanks

Thanks for your reply. I installed gnome-system-monitor and everything looks ok. It is my conky that is giving strange informations. I will check conkys configuration file in a free while.

  • Mac continually crashes several minutes after booting.

I inadvertently posted this in the "numbers" thread" so thought I'd repost my same problem in the right group. here it is.
I just had my logic board and graphics card replaced at an Apple store. That was awesome, however, shortly thereafter, my Mac started to continually crash with it's grey screen. Sometimes it would crash as it was booting up. Other times it would crash a few minutes into an operation. But then there are times when it runs just fine for hours!
I have noticed that if I let it sit on the log in screen for a few minutes it does seem to run fine,,,however, it has also crashed while sitting in the log in screen.
Is this a sign that my boot drive is going? After all, it is over three years old! Or is it something to do with the new logic board? Any suggestions would help before I buy a new hard drive. Thanks in advance.
    Doug

Thanks for the suggestion. My apple care had run out a week before the logic board crashed but the Apple Store replaced it anyway. However, it has been a little over a month so I was worried that they may charge me. But it is worth a shot. Gotta have my Mac!
One person suggested it my be bad ram and I thought that it might me my hard drive going, but a trip to the Genius Bar could find it all out.
    Thanks

  • MacBook beeping and no longer booting OS X after Boot Camp

So yesterday I used Boot Camp (under 10.5.3) to install Windows XP onto my Mac. I installed it following the exact instructions from Apple. However I was having problems installing the drivers. The install would always hang and never go anywhere. So I restarted and tried to boot to OS X, but it would just hang at the grey startup screen. No Apple logo or anything.
So I went back to Windows and got the drivers to work eventually. However my Macbook started making a weird beeping noise. It is very faint, almost sounds like a PC speaker on old DOS boxes. I had read that it might be harddrive related and ran a test from Disk Utility on the Leopard CD.It came up with no errors. By the way the beep happens under the Leopard CD when running Disk Utility, under Windows, and when trying to boot to OS X, so I think it's beyond the OS level.
Does anyone have any ideas on what might be wrong? Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks for that clarification ...perhaps it's either the drive or the fan? Those are the only two moving parts that might produce a mechanical sound (and the optical drive as well). Perhaps even a weird vibration? There used to be problems with CPU whine, but that wasn't something that you'd hear as loud as what you're describing. I'd bring it in to your Apple tech. for a check over.

  • Power Mac G4 MDD 1.25GHz DP often completely locks up in the first few minutes after booting, sometimes with the spinning beach ball, normally with a very high pitched whining noise.

Over the last few months my Mac has developed a worrying habit.
Within the first few minutes of starting it up (perhaps on average about 50% of the time) it will completely lock up. This may happen at the Log In screen (if I start up the Mac & then leave it for a while) or during normal use.
Often the first symptom is a very high pitched (but quiet) whining noise that seems to come from the loud speaker on the front of the Mac. The pointer may freeze at this point, or it may still be moveable for 5 or 10 seconds before it freezes. It sometimes turns into the spinning beach ball during this. Once locked up the only way I can restart the Mac is to hold down the power button on the front for a few seconds to completely reboot the machine.
Once the Mac has restarted, it usually behaves normally, almost always for the rest of the day. The initial lock up & resulting restart only normally seem to happen the first time I use the Mac that day.
The only peripherals attached to the Mac (apart from the display, keyboard & mouse) are an ADSL modem, a USB printer and a pair of Apple Pro speakers, and this setup hasn't changed since long before the problems started, so I'm confident that I can discount the peripherals causing problems. I doubt that unplugging the speakers, for example, would have any effect.
I've run Disc Utility, OnyX and DiscWarrior without anything major cropping up. My instincts (I've been troubleshooting Mac problems for 16 years) tell me that I have a fundamental hardware problem, possibly with one of the 4 RAM DIMMs installed.
The RAM configuration is shown in the attached screen grab.
I'm considering removing one DIMM, running with 1.5GB of RAM rather than 2GB for a while, and repeating with a different DIMM removed each time until I can hopefully isolate the dodgy DIMM.
Do people feel this is a sensible approach, or should I try something else first?
    Many thanks.

Sometimes visual inpection will show bulging tops/sides., my guess is if it is it's most likely in the PSU.
Possible cheap fix, You can convert an ATX PSU for use on a G4...

  • MX100 freezes a few minutes after boot

I have had this problem with 2 drives installed on two virtually identical machines.  The motherboard was an Asus P8Z68-V, and the cpu an i5 2500K.  I read this forum and tried the various suggestions, with no more success than many of the rest of you with a similar problem. I am adding this post to describe the simple and effective solution given to me when I phoned Crucial Technical Support. 1. Go to your motherboard manufacturer's site (Asus in my case), and head for the support download area.  2, Identify your motherboard model and locate the appropriate Intel Rapid Storage Technology (RST) software,  3.Download, install, and run it (a reboot will probably be required).4. Enjoy your awesome Crucial SSD. The RST download will be identified as a RAID program - don't be put off by that.  It is the right module, even if you (like I) are not using RAID.

Hi, my laptop is a hp pavilion g6 and for the past few days it has been freezing constantly.
I start up my laptop, everything seems fine, a few minutes later and suddenly nothing works. The curser, keyboard, none of it works. The only way to shut down my laptop when this happens is to hold down the power switch.
I did have an update (i dont know for what...) before this happened. Whenever i would click in the power options it had "update and restart, update and shutdown" so i updated and now it freezes.
Restoring to factory setting is a last resort for me. Please help!

  • AT100s Wi-Fi freezes few minutes after booting

The Wi-Fi tick option freezes on "turning off" by its own. Basically its turning off and freezing while Im using the tablet in any way.
Also the hardware buttons like volume +&- arent working and the power button wont work unless I force close the tablet by long pressing it.

In such case I don't think that you can do something to solve this... for me it looks like a serious problem and would recommend visiting the next Toshiba ASP in your country.

  • Macbook pro won't boot, or crashes after boot

My 2009 Macbook Pro running OS X 10.5 either has difficulty starting up, or after start up, it crashes. However, it seems to only crash when attempting to stream video from any web browser I've tried using (Firefox & Safari, (Chrome not supported by 10.5)).
When the computer starts up successfully, all seems ok until I try streaming video, usually from YouTube or similar. Then after about 2 minutes of it playing the video, the screen will freeze, audio will continue, and then the screen flashes wildly like a strobe light, or sometimes a checkered/plaid-like pattern appears on the screen in weird reds and blues.
When the computer does not boot at all, it will either appear to be booting, then freeze on the blue screen. Or as soon as I power up, I'll get the grey screen but it will have the checkered/plaid-like pattern on it, and it will stay there forever until I hold the power to turn it off.
Most of the time booting in safe mode will be successful, and from there I will run Disk Utility, my hard drive appears OK, but I have to repair disk permissions a few times before it says everything is OK. Sometimes attempting to boot in safe mode is not successful, so I will boot in Single User mode and run fsck -fy code until I get the "OK" message.
I'm out of ideas, and the problem doesn't seem to be going away. Do I need to erase the disk and reinstall OS X or  update to a newer version of OS X?
Thanks in advance for any help.

Sounds a bit like a heat issue.
Have you blown the dust out lately?
Get Temperature Monitor to see if it's heat related...
    http://www.bresink.com/osx/TemperatureMonitor.html
Sadly, it also sounds like this, which doesn't cover the 2009 MBP...

Open console in Applications>Utilities, check the system log for the date/time of the last crash  & the Startup right after that for clues.
Click on the top line we want, Shift plus click on the bottom line we want, CMD+c to copy, then paste the text in a reply with CMD+v
A few dozen lines should be about right, hundreds or thousands won't likely be readable.

  • Fusion drive ssd gone missing after boot

    Hi all,
I have a DIY fusion drive on my iMac which was working fine since I installed it over a year ago. This morning I booted my Mac and it got stuck while loading the Finder. Another reboot did not help so I booted the recovery partition and ran "diskutil list" and "diskutil cs list". The output looks fine: two physical disks forming a logical disk. But several minutes after booting the same commands don't show the ssd physical disk anymore and the logical disk goes offline.
Does anyone know what the problem with my ssd could be? After reboot the ssd is always detected and it always disappears after several minutes.
    All suggestions are very welcome!

Sounds like the SSD has failed.
