Mavericks: Cannot access hard drive on side-bar

Just updated my OS to Mavericks and have come up against something that has stumped me. Usually, I can access my files on my Media Drive through a side bar, however after upgrading this doesnt seem to be the case. The Finder window displays my files but I cannot access them. I can however access them through other means.

Hard drive is USB connected to Extreme.

Reboot the USB drive.. assuming it is powered.. or unplug and replug a self-powered drive.. (you should not use self-powered drives on AE before the latest model.. always use a powered hub).
Does the drive now appear in finder..
If not reboot both drive and the AE.. it should now appear.
If it doesn't work with direct connection try a powered hub.. that can help.

Cannot access hard drive

I was downloading some software updates and my computer was optimising my ibook when my battery ran out ( I had lent someone my power cord). Now I turn it on and get the flashing question mark, mac face folder. I have tried all the steps That I have found on the website;
Resetting the PRAM does not make a difference.
When I try to choose startup disc, the ibook disk is not an option.
I cannot re-install panther because there is no disk to re-install it onto.
When I do a hardware test I get the error message post/16/2048 DIMM1/J12.
Any suggestions

Hi, Anita. Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Hindsight being 20/20, Apple says not to do software installations while running from the battery.
Try booting into Safe Mode. This will take quite awhile longer than a normal startup because it does a file check and repair of the hard disk.
If this works you will see your normal desktop. Once completely started up in Safe Mode, try to restart normally, and go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility. Click on the top hard drive icon in the left sidebar and note the S.M.A.R.T. status at the bottom right of the pane. What does it say?
Select the named boot volume in the left sidebar, ("Macintosh HD" unless you've renamed it). What is the hard drive capacity and how much space remains available on it? Repair permissions on it.
See if you are able to do some hard drive maintenance to help things out.

Cannot see hard drives on airport extreme

Recently I cannot see hard drives on the network that are connected through Airport Extreme . The airport Extreme can see the drives, but the network cannot. I have not changed any settings that I know of. Only a reset of my macbook pro running Mavericks allows me to gives me access to the drives. Airport utility 6.3.2

Connect the drive directly to a USB port on your Mac.
Then open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility
Click on the drive in left hand panel and look for information at the bottom of the window about the disk
Your drive may be formatted as Windows NFTS. If that's the case, you will need to reformat the drive to work at the USB port of the AirPort Extreme. Be sure to copy any data that you need to another drive (maybe twice to be sure) before you do this as the reformat will erase all data on the drive.
When you are ready, click the Erase tab and then select MS-DOS (FAT) as the format so both PCs and Macs will be able to read the files.
Then copy a small test file back over to the FAT drive and plug the drive into the USB port on the AirPort Extreme. Restart everything on your network starting with the modem first, then device attached to the modem, etc.
On you Mac, open Macintosh HD and check to see if your AirPort Extreme icon appears under the SHARED heading on the left side of the window. If so, click the icon and folder will appear to the right representing your drive. Double click this folder to reveal the contents and mount the drive on your desktop. You should see your test file. Make sure it is operable..music plays, video works, etc.
Sorry, I haven't used Windows in 3-4 years and cannot remember how to access drives, but I would start with My Computer and start poking around. You want to verify that your PC can access and play the files as well.
If everything is OK,you can copy all your backup files back onto the USB drive attached to the AirPort Extreme. Keep the extra backup copy handy for awhile, just in case as well.

Depending on where you are located, country, region, etc, you may have options should
you wish to have it professionally restored or repaired to function properly again...
Even an Apple Store with Genius bar could, in several locations, give the product a look
and perhaps be able to diagnose the underlying issues. However that varies with the
degree of failed components and what is really wrong with it. A battery and a new HDD
could be all that's wrong with it. A diagnostic is often free, even on out-of-warranty Mac
at the Apple Store genius bar; an appointment is advised.
However if you only wanted someone to extract the hard disk drive and attach it to
a 'universal USB drive adapter kit' so at to try and access any readable files on it,
that is something that could be done at an Apple Authorized service provider; as
some of them may even have a section of resale products such as this adapter kit.
An example of this kind of kit includes wires, adapter parts, & a separate power supply
so it can be used to run the hard drive's electronics. This is not intended for permanent
use, but works like a set of patch cables to access the bare drive without an enclosure.

on a repair and the good ones can do that without a fee; they will not start a repair after they
see the computer until you get the estimate, and approve of the repair. If other items are
found to be of interest requiring other work or parts, they will also contact you, again before
continuing. One of these kinds of companies I know about (half a hemisphere away) is in

Any concerns about the data on the hard disk drive should be able to be answered by a
local Apple independent; they also should have the universal USB drive adapter locally.

It has always been very basic to always maintain abackup copy of your computer. Do you not have a backup copy?

Did the 10.7.3 update complete the installation process?
Some updates, when being installed and applied can restart (but not fully start up) the machine a couple of times.
I'd restart your machine and give it a few uninterrupted minutes to see if it boots up normally. Depending on the specs of your iMac, the remapping of app shortcuts etc can take a little while to complete (but not an excessive amount of time).
It is unlikely the update caused your hard drive to fail.
If your iMac doesn't boot up, restart and boot into the recovery partition of Lion by holding down both the cmd & R keys while booting. This will run Lion Recovery which will allow you to repair your Hard Drive, reinstall or install a fresh copy of Lion (network access is required).
If this fails, boot from the recovery DVD and launch Disk Utility from the Tools option in the toolbar and see if your hard drive is listed in Disk Utility. If your hard drive is not listed, there is a hard drive problem and you'll need to speak to Apple Tech Support to arrange a repair.

Are you actually running Lion on your computer??
Make sure the preference in Finder allow it to show network drives.
This might be turned off.
Have you setup Time Machine.. Time Machine can usually find the TC. If it fails then you need to redo the setup of the TC.
Use all short names, no spaces and pure alphanumeric.
Manually mount the TC hard disk from finder.. go .. connect to server.
Type in the name.
AFP://TCname (in mavericks you will need to add the domain.. so TCname.local) TCname is of course replaced with your actual TCname.

Mac utility cannot repair hard drive

My Mac does not start up. Safe start does not work and utility disk repair, starts then says it cannot repair hard drive. I have everything backed up on carbanite. If I erase the hard drive, how do I reinstall operrating software? I purchased the upgrade online and did not get a disk.

Here's how it's done.
Install or Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Erase the hard drive:
1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
2. After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the
      left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
3. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Optionally, click on
        the Security button and set the Zero Data option to one-pass. Click on
      the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Install button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
            because it is three times faster than wireless.

Have you tried rebooting from the installer disks that came with your iBook and running Disk Utility?
This should give you some fast feedback as to the state of your hard drive... i.e. can you see the hard drive through Disk Utility?
Let us know what steps you have taken to try to repair so we can give you some specific tips.

I was going to install leopard - failed - now computer cannot find hard drive - I tried to reinstall tiger cannot find hard drive so put disk warrior - finds hard drive says is it an extended adjusts everything - finds hard drive and says it is okay - any brain storms - I do have a back up hard drive hooked up to a very old IMAC to download the info so I can give it away - so I know I can use that to get to the infor on the hard drive in fact I can get to it through disk warrior

Make a clone of your HD then, while things are still good. Do you have a firewire drive or another internal drive you can make a clone to?
If you make a clone, you can then try to install Leopard and if it doesn't work again, reinstall the clone.

"Start Bar" or "Action GoMac" way to access Hard Drive in Dock

In Tiger, I was able to drag my hard drive into the dock (right hand side), and from then on it had the terrific click-hold feature of being able to scroll through my hard drive. This is similar to the "Action GoMac" and Windows "Start Bar" features, where you could put the folder you wanted in the bar, and then select each folder in the hierarchy simply by moving the mouse.
With Leopard, I put the hard drive in the Dock, but all I can do is this stupid feature of seeing the folders in the hard drive and then opening them in the finder. Well, that's just one step more efficient than clicking the hard drive.
Is there any program/setting/hack that allows you to put use the dock as a way to view your entire hard drive, including the subfolders and programs, WITHOUT having to use the finder?

Should I bring an external hard drive to Genius Bar when taking in my Macbook?

I have an appointment with the Genius Bar at my Apple store today after my Macbook refused to boot up last night. Though I have heard several helpful hints, I'm too skeptical of my own abilities to repair the computer myself! It's an 07 Macbook, so it's time is almost up, anyway - all I want is to successfully transfer what data I haven't backed up off of that hard drive to my external hard drive before I buy a new Mac.
Should I bring my external hard drive with me to my appointment? Is that something that would happen at that time? If they are able to access it, would they be able to help me transfer the data?
I don't know what to expect, and all I care about is backing up those last few files that are trapped on my potentially done-for computer!

Definitely bring the hard drive. This could be your last chance to save that data.
As a side note, please please please take this lesson to heart - any data that you do not want to lose must be kept in at least two places. By preference, in different physical locations. Get a backup plan for your new computer and use it. You'll be glad you did.

Leopard cannot see hard drive on any Mac running Tiger.

Running Leopard 10.5.2 on a Mac Pro 3GHz 4-core w/6GB RAM. I cannot connect to any hard drive / root directory on any Mac on my network running Tiger (10.4.9, .10 or .11) or OS9. Yes I have an Avid Meridian in the edit suite runing OS 9.2.2. No laughing please...
I can connect to the User folder on any Mac running Tiger but not any hard drives on any Mac running Tiger from a Mac running Leopard. The hard drive cannot be accessed from a User folder even if an alias of the Tiger drive is placed in the ~/User/Public folder.
The reverse works as usual. Any Mac running Tiger can see any hard drive on any networked Mac including Macs running Leopard.
Has anyone else encountered this issue &/or found a workaround? I spent almost 2 hours with Apple Tech Support including a system specialist. They confirmed this behavior in Leopard connected to Tiger OS Macs. Hard drives can be seen between all Macs running Leopard. It was theorized by one of the Apple techs that the behavior was engineered to encourage upgrading all Macs to Leopard. BAD idea! I requested this be reported to Apple engineering.
Tiger can see any drive on the network back to OS7. Leopard cannot see previous OS version hard drives.

I suggest that you repeat the external boot process with your MBP. If it boots the MBP, the internal SATA cable probably is faulty and should be replaced.

Download and read the documentation for Carbon Copy Cloner which is handy and what a lot of us have used over the years to clone, migrate and backup or manage drives and storage.
I think 500GB is overkill for boot drive as most of your apps and OS only need less than 150GB, and all of your data and media and home folders can be anywhere you want and not on the boot drive. Also, Apple way over charges for 2TB drives and no reason or value to do so. That is history now but fwiw.
You could I guess setup one 2TB as boot drive easy enough. Then migrate etc. Make that a backup of everything. Then manually or with CCC or other you can clone just what you want to SSD and to the other 2TB drive.
Apps should always go to the boot drive, the SSD in this case, and not to other locations. No benefit putting them elsewhere.
When you migrate are your files on TimeMachine or just standard files and folders? and can't selectively copy? Honestly never found need to use M.A. more than once probably.
