Mavericks clean install question

I sold a 2008 Macbook Pro 17" to someone on Ebay. I had installed a clean copy of Mavericks over wifi using my apple ID. I created a user and logged in so I could take photos of the screen for the Ebay auction.
Buyer has laptop now, and can't do a fresh install (or even login) without my admin password. I've given him every version of my passwords I can think of, but he says none of them work.
Any advice on how he can fresh install maybe using his apple ID?
He's ****** and wants to send it back. Help!

Can he boot to it with Control-D and install without my apple ID?
No, it's command -C. And yes that does not require an Apple ID.
You might suggest that he erase the drive before installing.

  • Lost iLife after OS X Mavericks Clean Install

Hi, I just did an OS X mavericks clean install and lost the iLife suite (iPhoto, iMovie and GarageBand). I downloaded the iPhoto app and Apple charged me $15 for an app I already pay.  What I can do in this situation? How can I get my money and apps back?
    Thanks,
    iRCM

How did you obtain the original apps that you had installed? If you have the old iLife install disk, just use that to reinstall them. If you purchased them at the app store, they should show in your purchases so you can download them again.  If they were installed in your Mac and were older versions and you did not make a backup, then they're gone. When a new version is introduced, you have to purchase it again - that is how the app store works now: Apple may make an update available at no charge, but a new version needs to be purchased (you can use your older version until it is no longer compatible with the OS you are running).

  • I want to download Mac OS 10.9 Mavericks "Clean install"

I want to download Mac OS 10.9 Mavericks “Clean install”  (any version). Not an automatic/install from Apple App Store downloads, but as a .dmg .iso or whatever.
I have tried Torrents downloads but have encountered various problems, most are upgrades not 'clean install'.
Can you please recommend a good https://www. site with a full https://www. address.
Many thanks in advance. (from Thailand) [email protected]

You can perform a clean install of Mavericks as follows:
Install or Reinstall Mavericks or Mountain Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
OS X Mavericks- Erase and reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Erase and reinstall OS X
OS X Lion- Erase and reinstall Mac OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • Mavericks clean install, won't reboot

2009 13" MacBook Pro.  I tried to do a clean install and cleared my hard drive (using option key when restarting, recovery hd, and erasing). Mavericks installed fine, but my computer didn't restart automatically, it just took me back to the OS X utilities.  I can see the OS X Base System on my disk utility and I verified the disk and it was fine. I've tried the PRAM reset and it still doesn't work.  Every time I start my computer the only thing I can see is OS X Utilities.
I did not use a USB bootable install drive because I was under the impression I did not need one if I was doing a clean install. Is that my problem?  Sorry if this is a dumb question but I am not very good with computers!

I'm at the point where I've got Yosemite on a thumb drive
Did you create a bootable USB installer, or do you just have a copy of the installer on the USB drive?
If you have a bootable USB installer, did you test it before you erased your drive?

  • Mavericks - clean install with filevault and Time machine restore

    Hi All,
I will update my MacBook pro mid 2011 with the new Mavericks OS.
I've activated Filevault on my HDD due to corporate security rules.
I want to make a clean install of the new OS.
    I plan the following action:
1 - Make a full backup with Time machine
2 - Create a USB drive with Mavericks on it, I'm using Diskmaker to create it
3 - Start MBP with the USB
4 - With disk utility erase my HDD
    5 - Install Mavericks
6 - Reload my data from the Time machine Backup
    Question:
I'm a bit Scare about the Time Machine backup and Filevault, any experience with the same configuration, do I risk anythink if I follow my plan ?
Do I need to desactivated Filevault before to lunch my clean install and make the backup after that ?
Thanks in advance for your feedback
    Regards
    Alain M.

    Hi Alain,
I see you never got a reply to this, but I'm wondering what you finally did? I have very similar questions, but I'm "upgrading" from 10.6.8 Snow Leopard. I also have FileVault activated and use a Time Machine backup. Any comments/suggestions/experience you (or others) would like to share would be helpful.
    Thanks

  • Mavericks Clean Install now Time Machine won't work

Was having probs with Mavericks upgrade so decided to do clean install. Did TM backup and wiped main HD and check it then installed Maverics.
Performed migration to get Applications & Data back all seemed fine. TM showd all back up from before install.
TM reported fail on next day backup so I open TM to see what was there. I was shocked to discover all backups gone except one following migration and in progress backup that failed.  Never asked if old back ups to be deleted just disappeared.
As all apps & data on main HD I reformatted and Checked TM disk all fine. TM starts backup of HD around 750GB to TM 2TB disk. After many hours it reports an error occured, no details what so ever what error was. Have reformatted again and tried again same. Is this Apple saying my 4yo IMac needs replacing, do they need more money or am I missing something, have read TM support files that dont help.
Any advice would be great. Thank you.

What kind of external drive do you have and do you have software installed that came with it?

  • New hard drive, Mavericks clean install or use SuperDuper

I am replacing hard drive in MacBook Pro. I have a bootable Mavericks installer on thumb drive and an external hard drive with a SuperDuper clone of my current MBP HD. Is there any advantage to a clean install (from the thumb drive and then using SuperDuper) over just using SuperDuper to add the backup to a newly formatted HD?
    TIA

With a clean install, you'll get the Recovery HD. SuperDuper only clones the Macintosh HD and NOT the Recovery HD.
I believe you can use your SuperDuper clone during the Setup phase so it migrates your user accounts, data and apps.

  • Mavericks clean install - WiFi won't connect

    2012 Macbook Pro with Retna
I performed a clean install of 10.9 Mavericks and now my home WiFi will not connect.
I am able to connect to the hotspot on my phone, and I can connect to the wifi at work.
2 iPads, 2 iPhones, and 3 windows laptops connect fine.
Windows 8.1 in Boot Camp connects fine.
In Mavericks, while it is attempting to authenticate I can open a web page. Network Prefrences will show an IP address while attempting to authenticate, but it goes away after 30 seconds or so, then I get the message that the Wi-Fi network requires a password and the IP is gone.
As I say, the other devices all connect fine. I have cleared them from the devices and re-joined, so I know the password works.
I know the hardware is good because Windows in Boot Camp connects fine.

Dug into the discussion posts a bit more and found this solution that worked for me in case anyone else is having the same issue: https://discussions.apple.com/message/23478218#23478218
I booted up in safe mode, created a new network connection, logged into my wifi, reboot my MAC... then bam! It works. I'm connected to wifi again! Lesson learned.... wait for Apple to work out the kinks before upgrading. :-)

  • Mavericks - Clean Install - Beach Ball

Hi, I had just clean installed Mavericks in my mid 2012 MBP, For some reason, I get the beach ball on almost every application, even typing sometimes.
I was running Leopard and the same happened, all applications slow, beach ball all the time, at first I thought I had too many files, so I decided to upgrade to Mavericks, doing a clean install so I could install and restore just the necessary.
So, now I am here, I have already boot on recovery mode and ran the disk utility, no errors found.
I have ran the disk utility, no changes at all.
Just you get the ideia of how slow my MBP is, for now on I will refer to Spinning Beach Ball as SBB.
I click to open Notes, SBB
    Try to type fast, SBB
Click to add one more note, SBB
    System pref, SBB
    Bluetooth pref (top bar), SBB
And of course Safari, which don`t let me scroll without the glorious SBB.
SO, as you can see, the config of my MBP is not so outdated, it shouldn`t be this bad, which leads to think this may be a hardware problem.
I don`t know what to test or how to narrow down the option of what could be causing this issue.
    Thanks in advance!

I have exactly the same observations with my MBP, and also starting with a clean install of Mavericks. I sure hope they are not hardware issues.
I have also reviewed all applications, e.g. Microsoft Office 2008 appears to be completely incompatible so it has gone and problem persists.
    Any guidance would be great,

  • Mavericks clean install problems

Created a boot drive just like all the tutorials say.  Went through entire install process with no issues. Finally get Mavericks up and running but I see some of my apps on there, like a couple games and some other apps. Also had numerous files from downloads, like songs and movies. I eject the boot drive and restart the computer and when it restarts it's like I never did a clean install. All of my files were still there.
Any ideas on where I could have went wrong?

I'm so confused, initially I had upgraded to Mavericks instead of doing a clean install. So after a ton of issues I backed up all my important stuff onto an external HD. I made a boot disk from a USB flash drive. I erased the drive using disk utility and formatted for Mac OS X extended (journaling) then I got the files into the boot disk.
I restarted, held option and then clicks on the boot disk and started the install. Doesn't this wipe the original OS and completely install a brand new one? I'm used to windows where I can format the drive and reinstall.
I'm honestly so confused how I could have had a fresh install of mavericks and then restart the computer and have it basically seem like I hadn't done anything.

  • Mavericks Clean Install and dialog boxes still don't work?!

I upgraded to Mavericks and all seemed well until I tried to open saved files from any of my applications. The Open dialog box would open with list of files with tags to left in small font. None of which were clickable. If I knew its location in Finder I could drag it over open diag box and it would highlight and I could open it using open button but could not click and select it.
I wiped the HD and did a clean install. No help.
When I create files in for eg Pages the only way I can use them again after save is from recent menu. If they get knocked off Im buggered. What the **** is up with Mavericks or am I the only sucker around!?

  • Mac not recognizing Time Machine after Mavericks Clean Install

    Hello,
I just did a clean install of OSX Mavericks and I can't access any of my Time Machine backups and am very worried about having lost all my data.
Before I did the clean install, I backed up data using my Toshiba 1TB External hard drive using Time Machine. It backed up successfully and has been doing so for about a year.
After the successful clean install of Mavericks, I plugged my external hard drive in, to which I was prompted with "would you like to use this hard drive for Time Machine Backups?" I clicked yes, and it said "Decrypting Time Machine Backups." I got worried and quickly cancelled the decryption process.
Now, whenever I plug in the external hard drive, nothing comes up. I can't access any of its files. Whenever I open the Disk Utility application, it does recognize that its plugged in, but its grayed out, and I can't do anything with the drive.
I'm very worried about losing all my data and info and would greatly appreciate any insight about this.
    Thanks

Solved. Right click on the hard drive in Disk Utility, click "unlock."
    So simple, yet so obscure.

  • Applications load slowly on imac after Mavericks clean install

After a clean install of Mavericks, my late 2009 imac runs more slowly compared to how it ran under Snow Leopard.  Applications like "Settings" take a few seconds to load, whereas under snow leopard, the application would load almost instantly.  The Novabench score now is around 771, and matches about what I measured after the clean Mavericks install, but appears low compared to scores for similarly configured systems running Snow Leopard.  The system is quite usable, especially if applications are left open, just slower.  Is it possible to identify from Etrecheck a possible explanation?  Is this level of degradation of performance expected when upgrading an old system?  Thank you for your help.

  • OS X Mavericks: clean install or upgrade?

There is some sort of a difference?

    http://www.gottabemobile.com/2013/10/22/perform-clean-install-os-x-mavericks/
Most important thing is to have a recent backup.
If you have that then you can do either an upgrade or de novo install and have a fall back should you need one.
