Mavericks crashes just after install 10.9.2
Was running Microsoft Word 2011 for Mac 17" on my (MBP 17" early 2011)
Also had Powerpoint open
started doing the install 10.9.2 - it completed, was running fine for about 3 minutes. Then a series of vertical lines filled the screen about 5 mm wide grey-black and white alternating. System was hanging. Restarted MBP. Went grey - rebooot, screen went black and stayed black. Restarted about 3 times, each time going a little further. Eventaully was holding in a working situation. Went to disk utilities, disk permissions repair. - hundreds of permission repairs needed. It seems that the Upgrade messed up all the Disk permissions. Unit working stably for the last half hour since then. Anyone else had this happen?
Hello PNDH,
It sounds like you are seeing some performance issues after updating to Mavericks. I recommend starting by verifying and repairing your start up disk and re test the issue:

If the issue persists, I would next try resetting your PRAM and SMC:

Llustrator crashing when opening just after installing in iMac 10.8.2
Hi, I have problem to open Adobe Illustrator CS6 on OS X Mountain Lion 10.8.2 just after installing it.
I installed an Adobe Design Standard package and tried to open Illustrator, Photoshop, Indesign, Acrobat Pro.
All the programs except for Illustrator could be successfully open. I attempted to reinstall the whole package twice after uninstalling and deleting all Adobe programs, but they showed me the same message such as 'Adobe Illustrator CS6 quit unexpectedly'. I have no idea what the problem is.
I am using a new iMac 21.5 29GHz intel core i5, OS X Mountain Lion 10.8.2 setting with UK English, and the Adobe Design Standard package is for Korean.
Could you please let me know in which cases make this kind of problem only for Illustrator? Thank you.

iMac (21.5-inch, Late 2012), OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2)Hi,
Right now, you need to have same OS lang setting (for eg. Korean) and installed language for AI Cs6 ( same as OS lang, i.e. Korean in this case) for AI to properly launch.
Please change the OS language to "Korean" and then try launching AI CS6 (assuming it is installed in Korean).
Thanks,

InDesign CS6 crashing just after start up
Hi,
We've had an ongoing problem with one of our users InDesign CS6, I feel like we have tried everything possible. I'll list them for reference:
Uninstalling InDesign CS6 through the standard "uninstall a program".
Uninstalling InDesign CS6 and using the "AdobeCreativeCloudCleanerTool".
Tried installing using different disks.
Tried updating the program (some times it showed there being no updates).
Tried deleting startup scripts and deleting preferences.
Tried with a fresh profile on the users PC.
Used multiple PCs to test this with different accounts from different users.
In the end we just wiped the Harddrive clean, a completely fresh install of windows 7, still no joy.
The only way we can get this to work and not crash just after start up is by giving the user administrative rights, which for obvious reasons, isn't an option for us.
Here is the problem signature from window that notifies me of the crashing, with all the info inside.
Problem signature:

I would provide msinfo and dxdiag files but I feel they are irrelevant due to the fact that it happens on multiple machines.
Could anyone please advise?
Thanks,
JacobHi Peter,
It seems I've finally found a fix! One of my colleagues sent me this so I thought I would share it incase others have the same issue.
These are the steps I followed to get it to work.
1.Create a folder on the C-root, like C:\UserTemp
2.Give the users Modify rights on the folder you created,
3.Run the following commandlines for each user to change their %temp% and %tmp% paths (need to be logged in as the user):
A. setx.exe TEMP C:\UserTemp
B. setx.exe TMP C:\UserTemp
Basically what this does is creates a new TEMP folder where the user can gain full access too, without actually having administrative rights. I've been told this works for all CS6 applications not just InDesign.
Hope this can help someone else in the future and thanks for all your help on this Peter, with the troubleshooting.
Cheers,

My mac has become very slow and crashes frequently after installing Lion
My mac has become very slow and crashes frequently after installing Lion. I have a 4 GB DDR3 ram and 2.4 GHz Processor. The Mac was running just fine on Snow Leopard. Has anyone else faced this issue?
Any suggestions on how to solve it?
Thank you
Kimberly M. NoronhaI refer you to the TM expert
http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/14.html
As a extra precaution I would copy the user file folders of Music, Documents, Pictures etc to another external drive and disconnect, just in case.

I have an infuriating problem with Elements 4 crashing immediately after an install on mac OSX 10.4.11, can anyone help ?
I was given the computer, which still had Elements 4 on it although it always crashed on opening, i removed the program and bought a 2nd hand hard copy of Elements 4 from eBay.
When i install the new copy it opens up with the "credits" but at the bottom right it still shows the past owners name as licensee briefly, then crashes before fully opening.
Does anyone know what is going on? I know it's an old version but i find elements4 perfect for my needs
Thankyou for reading.
SimonMore information needed. Are you saying you're just running the computer from the PO's user account? I would very strongly recommend erasing the disk and starting over with a fresh install of OS X for a number of reasons.

Mac crashes regularly after installing new RAM
My laptop crashes at least once a day ever since installing new RAM. It seems to be triggered by quitting programs, usually Firefox, Logic or Spotify. There was nothing else connected to the Mac that brought about the latest crash but I do use an Mbox 2 on a regular basis.
Below is the last crash report and also the RAM profile. It's Kingston brand if that means anything.

It's also strange that your RAM has no stated VendorID, Part Number or Serial Number.
I would return this memory poste haste.
Alternatively, if the DIMMs are from Kingston's ValueRAM range, just dump them in the garbage because that's where they belong. While you're there, look for any other RAM that someone else has thrown away - chances are its ValueRAM, too (hint: I have never seen a single ValueRAM DIMM work in any of my systems, so I avoid them like the plague - shame, since Kingston used to have such a good reputation). -
Safari 6.0.5 crashes just after launch
Hi, I'm having trouble with Safari 6.0.5. It crashes just a few seconds after launching. I have tried to reset and clear history, but it doesn't stay launched long enough. I repaired disk permissions and restarted. Any help would be appreciated, thanks.
This crash is caused by a bug in the way Safari synchronizes with iCloud.
Uncheck the box marked Safari in the iCloud preference pane. You may also need to do as follows.
Back up all data.
Triple-click the text on the line below on this page to the clipboard, then copy it to the Clipboard (command-C):
~/Library/Safari/Bookmarks.plist
Quit Safari.
Select
Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the Finder menu bar. Paste into the text box that opens (command-V), then press return.
A folder window should open with a file named "Bookmarks.plist" selected. Move the selected file to the Desktop, leaving the folder open.
Relaunch Safari. It will open with the default set of bookmarks. Delete them all. Select
File ▹ Import Bookmarks
from the Safari menu bar. Import from the bookmarks file you moved to the Desktop. Arrange the bookmarks as you wish.
Select from the menu bar
History ▹ Clear History
and confirm. As far as I know, you don't need to reset Top Sites, but I'm not sure of that.
You can then try to re-enable Safari in iCloud. It may start to crash again. In that case, you'll have to leave synchronization disabled until a more permanent solution turns up. Sync bookmarks with iOS devices in iTunes instead. -
Itunes 9.0.1 crashes just after starting every time.
Hello,
Hopefully someone can help me out. Any advice would be most gratefully received.
I never had any problems previously running Itunes. I downloaded and used Itunes 9.0 immediately after it was released for a while without any problems. A week or so before 9.0.1 was released itunes started to crash shortly after I opened it. I downloaded Itunes 9.0.1 and the same problem has continued.
I can't think of anything I did before the crashing started that could have caused the problem. The last action was probably importing some movies. I've deleted the scripts and the lastfm scrobbler and that hasn't helped. The crash seemed to happen while Apple delivered my genius results so I managed to switch off genius before the programme crashed but, again, this doesn't appear to have solved the problem.
Curiously my girlfriend has a user account on the same computer, running 9.0.1, apparently without any problems. We share the same library and I've just updated hers, again without any problems.
Can any kind hearted soul offer a solution. You will be rewarded with generous helpings of Karma.
Best wishes,
JakedanceJason,
Have any advice for this?
While performing multiple downloads in the iTunes store (9.0.1) in Snow Leopard. I iTunes locks up and then the freeze propagates to my entire Mac until it becomes completely unresponsive. I then have to hold down the power button on my C2D iMac and then start up again a few minutes later. This has happened 3 times so far. I lost my iTunes library the first time and AppleCare recommended restoring the entire iTunes library 86GB, from my Time Machine backup. A pain. Since then it has happened additionally 2x. I've just unchecked the "allow multiple downloads" box in the downloads window, so we'll see if that fixes the problem. -
Mail crashes just after start of it
Hello,
Mail crashes every time I start it. I configured my gmail account for imap and changed it later back to POP. Even if I change my gmail account to work with IMAP, it doesn't solve the problem. Mail crashes again and again, just after the start.
Anyone else with the same problem?Sorry for the posting. I think the problem is already in this thread:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1223823&tstart=0 -
Here in France, it's getting late, 9.45 PM, that is 12 hours after the first crash of Photoshop CC 2014 on my Mac OS 10.9.4.
Nothing changed on my computer, excepted the PhCC14 update.
Then I launched the app and it crashed right after displaying the workframe.
I tried and tried so many things :
Ashutosh.Nigam suggested me in this forum to change the permissions to SLStore & SLCache Folder, but it did not work.
Ali from french Adobe support told me to delete my Settings files, but it was not enough.
A girl with no name from the same team told me to update my graphics card driver, but, you know, I run the latest Mac OS X version and everything is updated, mademoiselle.
Stephane sent me a link to a huge page of things to do :
- Troubleshoot account-specific fonts, but there wasn't any corrupted font
- Delete account-specific Adobe cache files but... guess what...
- Troubleshoot account-specific login items but... yes, that's it, I can see you understand me
- Reset the access settings on the user account's Library folder... oh god, that was fun, I used the Terminal and sudo commands
- I checked the disk and repaired all permissions...
I did all of these things because when I tried to open PhCC in an other admin session, it worked. So it could be an incompatibility between my session and PhCC. But, but, but, when I tried again to lauch the app in the second session, it worked fine but refused to quit. Ha ha ha.
Last call to the french support : "Désolé Monsieur, you didn't spend 2000 € for a specific help, but because you have lost a whole day of work, we will pay you back 2€. And no, Photoshop won't work anymore on your session. You have to move all your files to a new session."
It's unfair ! The software was running gently on my session, Adobe change things and I have to break everything on my computer, move every config from one session to another with absolutely no warranty that it won't crash again.
It's NOT what I pay Adobe CC each month for.
Very disappointed Jean-LucAnyone know how to read a crash report?
I can print with Lightroom, there is nothing wrong with the printer, or the file. But I want to print with Photoshop without a crash. Besides, Lightroom doesn't give me access to all of my print settings.
Hoping someone can help, I"m exasperated..... -
Is arch linux safe to be connected to the net just after install?
Is it secured enough to be connected to the net after install and all updates applied or do I have to do some additional configuration to make harden it?
IMHO every home computer should be connected to a recent and good name brand NAT router. Even if you only have one computer, I still recommend running it behind a good router.
With the default /etc/rc.conf file, there are only four daemons started at boot up. If you put your out of the box Arch install behind a properly optioned NAT router, you should be safe for E-mail, browsing, messaging, downloading Arch updates, etc. After that it's up to you to use some common sense about what web sites you visit.
Here is a good tutorial on NAT routers. If you are interested in computer security, it is a good read. While you are at that site, you can go to ShieldsUp, click on proceed, then in the blue box, click on "All Service ports". This will probe the first 1056 ports and hopefully all your ports will be green and you get a "TrueStealth" rating.
If I turn on additional daemons, such as SAMBA or SSH, then I take a couple of additional precautions. These extra precautions aren't really necessary as long as you aren't doing any port forwarding on your router, but I tend to be on the paranoid side when it comes to security. Since I use Gnome, I install the Firestarter firewall. I know it isn't under development anymore, but since iptables hasn't changed since then, does it really matter? You also have to use a work around to start the GUI, but that is easy enough. gksu dbus-launch firestarter does the trick. Set up the firewall so that the smb service (SAMBA) and the ssh service only allow computers on your home network. Anything external to your network is not allowed. Then I use the /etc/hosts.allow and /etc/hosts.deny files to only allow computers on my home network. That should be good enough for a home network.
Now, if you want to open up ports and services that "Listen" to the world, such as Apache, mail servers, etc, then that is a whole new can of worms that is currently beyond my capabilities.

Mavericks Kernel panic after installing xcode
Hi,
I was stupid enough to install an older version of Xcode (3.2.5) on Mavericks and during the installation, my Mac completely crashed. It just went black. After rebooting, I get a kernel panic each time. The error dump mentions "Mac OS version not yet set" so I assume the kernel panic occurs even before the OS is trying to load. It also mentions something about Kernel Extensions in backtrace: com.apple.iokit.CHUDKernLib.
From what I've read so far, it seems that older Xcode versions try to install 32bit kernel extensions, causing the problem. But how do I fix that?
What can I do?
- booting into safe mode or single user mode does not work (same kernel panic): there seems to be a CHUD removal tool available, but as I cannot boot into safe mode, I cannot run it.
- booting into recovery mode works: I tried checking the hard disk for errors (all was fine). So I can also access the terminal. But now what?
- I cannot do a fresh install of MacOSX: gives an unknown error warning
- I cannot restore from Time Capsule: there are no backups available (which is untrue)
I read an article somewhere that I should move the kernel extensions out of the way, but I cannot seem to find them. There are no CHUD kext files in the /System/Library/Extensions folder.

Acrobat Pro 8 crashes just after launch
I apologize if this has been asked before, I looked and couldn't find it listed anywhere.
Two weeks ago the hard drive in my Intel iMac crashed hard, and now I've had to reinstall all of my software on a new drive. Everything is working fine, except Acrobat Pro 8. I had the program installed on my hard drive before the crash, and it has worked flawlessly for a couple of years, however now, when I boot Acrobat up I get the standard "Getting Started with Adobe Acrobat 8 Professional" window, but after a few seconds the program crashes. I've used the "Acrobat Uninstaller" software to uninstall the software, then done a complete reinstall of it, but each time it still crashes- I've completed this procedure 4-5 times at this point, and I still cannot solve it. It does it whether I install it on the startup disk, or the clean empty external hard drive. The Apple Disk Utility gives both drives a clean bill of health when I run "disk repair" and "repair permissions."
I hope someone can help me with this problem. The error report window does not allow the "copy" command to be used, and it would take 10 screen shots or so to be able to include the contents of it. I'm sure hoping someone has the magic answer for me, I NEED my Acrobat to be working right now, in the middle of a design deadline.
Thanks so much for any help. So, I tried the Licensing Repair Tool and it doesn't do the job. I've used Acrobat Uninstall to uninstall the program several times now, then I re-install Acrobat again. Now when I launch it for the first time it takes me straight to the "Getting Started with Acrobat 8 Professional" screen, bypassing the serial number installation process altogether. For the life of me I cannot figure this out, but it is driving me crazy, not to mention bringing my workflow to a standstill.
Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks. -
OracleXE crashes straight after install (CentOS 4.5)
I Installed the Oracle XE rpm:s (client and server) and then run /etc/init.d/oracle-xe configure as instructed. I did not change any port assignements from the defaults.
After this, no Oracle server was running, and I finally found out that it had crashed, leaving a trace file in /usr/lib/oracle/xe/app/oracle/admin/XE/udump/xe_ora_3142.trc.
Any ideas?
This some exerpts from the content of the trace file (please mail me at [email protected] for the whole file):
