Mavericks destroyed HD and OSX 10.7 installation on a 4,2 machine

I have a MacBook Pro 4,2 that had OSX 10.7 Lion on it.  When "upgrading" to Mavericks, the installation completely destroyed the hard drive.  Fortunately I was only using it as a media server with a minimum of installed apps and software, and the data was stored on an external Firewire drive.  It was not possible to recover either with the recovery partition or by reformatting the drive using Drive Utility and/or a complete reinstall of the OS from an OSX 10.7 install USB stick that I bought from Apple some time ago.
My guess is that Apple has disavowed or deactivated this installation because it requires an Internet connection to Apple to verify the conputer and likely the USB stick/OS installer.  Error was, "A problem occurred... bla bla. Try reinstaling OSX" at every attempt to make the drive come back to life because of whatever Mavericks did, it left the drive "mounted". I was finally able to reformat the drive using Drive Genius (no, Disk Warrier did not work since it could not overcome the "mounted" attribute) that was run from a clone startup drive (Carbon Copy Cloner) made from a different machine using 10.7.5.  Even after reinitialzing and creating a new partition, the OSX 10.7 install stick could not install the OS!  This is unacceptable!  The final solution was to clone the other machine's boot drive onto the hard drive of the damaged machine.  I'll give the Mavericks update another try after the cloning is complete. I am disappointed that Apple does not do adequate regression testing on older machines,  since this issue did also occur a couple of years ago at the upgrade to OSX 10.7 download on the very same machine, prompting me to buy the USB stick at the Apple Store and rebuild the machine then too.
A word of warning to those upgrading:  Be sure that you have a backup/Time Machine/Carbon Copy Clone of your machine before you start in case of issues like this.

After my 2011 MacBook Pro 17 died, I had to purchase a new MacBook Pro 15 to replace it.  I performed a Time Machine installation from that 2011 machine, and only Distiller and Acrobat would launch (none of the rest of the creation apps).  So I ran the CS5.5 installer, uninstalled, then reinstalled, producing the same result. When I try to launch, nothing happens.  What next?

  • Server File Sharing unstable on mac and windows network on Mavericks and OSX Server 3.0

Since I've updated our mac mini server from Mountain Lion and OSX Server 2.X to Mavericks and OSX Server 3.0  we are having sharing issues with Windows (7 and 8) and OSX Mavericks users, not being able to access files on the mac mini server.
What I've notice is that OSX Serer 3.0 stop working and I have to restart the Mac Mini Server to make things start working again.
This was not happening with Mountain Lion and OSX Server 2.X.
On the Windows and OSX users what happen is the computers keep trying to connect to the server and are not being able to open or copy files. Again this is intermittent, and I suspect it might be a OSX Server bug.
Any one having the same problem or can give us and advice would be great help.
    Thanks.
    Andre Tenenbaum

I too am having this exact problem as well as a few of my network administrator contacts that have gone through the Mavericks / Server 3 upgrade.
It may be worth noting that before the upgrade I had run a mac mini server (core 2 duo) that never had any unintentional downtime, and the current mac server had never gone down or lost connection so I know it has nothing to do with user or network configuration.
    NAS server hardware:
    - Mac Mini core i5
    - 16 GiB ram
    -  Promise Pegasus Raid5 external drive (thunderbolt)
I am NOT running time machine as the backup.
Everyting posted above is occuring although the rate at which my users lose acces is sporadic.  Sometimes the server will stay up 24-36 hours and sometimes it will only stay up for around 4.  Every user, every group loses acces AT THE EXACT SAME TIME EVERYTIME to EVERY SHAREPOINT...all of my local users as well as my remote users.  All of my users are on Windows machines (mostly win7, but a couple of XP and 8 users as well).  The share is accessed via a mapped drive using the format x.x.x.x/share and I have had 0 issues with getting users connected.  The problem is 100% keeping them connected.  When the users lose access the get the "drive cannot be accessed" error on their end, however when I check the server 3 app, it still shows all users connected and I have let it run for a few minutes and the idle times do change.
I also cannot see any spikes in the Activity monitor that might indicate a memory strain issue on the server side, but I assume that is because I am not watching the Activity Monitor at the moment everyone loses access.
Let me say that the SMB2 protocol does work much better when it actually works, much faster, but intermitent connectivity is a VERY SERIOUS ISSUE and has resulted in several corrupt files for my workers already.  Also, because I was one of the unfortunate people that had the upgrade lock up on me and I had to restart it, I lost my 10.8.x recover backup and so I would have to do a clean install in order to restore my server back to its original state. I am also hesitant to do this because I would most likely only be able to download the Server3 app from the app store and I have not heard from apple or any other power user group on whether the bug is with the app or the OS.

  • OSX Lion 10.7.3 and Airport Utility 6 Installation Errors

I tried to run a Software Update and install the latest upgrades but the installation fails for both Airport Utility 6 and OSX Lion 10.7.3 updates. Each time, the update is downloaded succesfully then after the installer runs for a while an error pops up on the screen saying something like "Error: A number of files could not be installed" and all you can do is "ok" it. Nothing gets installed. When downloading JUST Airport Utility 6 from the Apple website to attempt a manual install, I get the following error:
I've tried running Fix Disk Permissions on the drive, and even Rpair Disk, but found no errors of any kind on the disk. My disk has over 300GB of available space. The Mac is a 2011 MacBook Pro 2.3Ghz with 4G RAM, currently running 10.7.2.
I've never had ewrrors with an Apple Software Update before, so this is very strange...
Apple, can you please help, or let us know if there will be a fix forthcoming?

Examination of the system log shows the following error exactly when the update fails:
xpchelper[1030]: could not open dyld map file: (null)

  • I'm having trouble with my computer, I boot it up and within a few minutes it freezes and I have to restart it, I tried updating it to the latest mavericks but it won't finish the installation it's stuck at the end, what can I do to fix this?

As stated I'm having trouble with my computer, I boot it up and within a few minutes it freezes and I have to restart it, I tried updating it to the latest mavericks but it won't finish the installation it's stuck at the end, what can I do to fix this? I need it for homework tonight.

    Crowntheme,
you can try this: boot your MacBook Pro into Recovery mode by holding down a Command key and the R key as it starts up. Once the Mac OS X Utilities menu appears, select Disk Utility. On the left-hand side of the Disk Utility window, select your internal disk’s boot partition (typically called “Macintosh HD”). On the right-hand side, press the Verify Disk button if it’s not greyed out; if it is greyed out, or if it reports that errors were found, press the Repair Disk button. Once the verification/repair is completed, exit Disk Utility and select Restart from the Apple menu to restart in normal mode. Does it still freeze after a few minutes?

  • New hard drive and OSX install but not linked to my Apple ID

My hard drive died on my MacBook Pro (2012) and so I had a new one put in. Before this they managed to save a back up of all my folders, files, pictures etc. They then re installed my OSX software (not my original as that was Lion, I think this one is Mountain Lion - it's version 10.8), and started up my computer to put my 'back up' of my folders etc onto the computer before returning it to me. However, by starting up the computer and going through the welcome section, they have logged in without my Apple ID and so my computer is not synced to that apple account. This computer is now not registered with my apple account. This means, my iLife is gone (iPhoto etc). How can I restart and have the computer linked with my Apple account. I need to be able to sync up to access my iLife, my previous purchases such as Pages, and sync my iPhone with the computer again.
    How can I fix this?

'They" are Apple technicians or an AASP tech?  I had a similar situation where Mt. Lion was installed on my MBP, by a genius bar technician, which originally came with Lion.  The solution was to reinstall Lion.  Then to install Mt. Lion, I had to get a redemption code from Apple and then install it.  This then connected my ID with Mt. Lion.
If you have purchased Mt. Lion, it should still be in your App store account.  If you have not purchased it, consider installing Mavericks instead (it is free).
I suggest that you start the MBP with the OPTION-COMMAND-R keys down.  The display will show a revolving globe and proceed with the installation.  This connects with the Apple servers and installs the original OSX.  You will need a solid Internet connection.
    Ciao.

encore keeps crashing on startup on macbook pro. I have all the latest cc and osx updates

What specific OS and Encore versions? Since you say "latest OS updates," I assume Mavericks, and is this the relatively new 10.9.1 version?
Where in the startup does it crash? Is there an error message?
Mavericks causes a variety of issues, and we don't have enough data to really pin them down. At least with the original Mavericks, some users appeared to get CS6 to run with some serious but workable problems.
Make sure you have handled any permissions issues.

The new Macbook Pros do not come with installation or operating system disks.
If you are using Boot Camp Assistant to install Windows in Mountain Lion, read and follow the installation instructions. Downloading the Windows support software is one of the first options in the Boot Camp Assistant memu. There is no Mountain Lion disk containing the support software.

  • Get rid of the GPT-table and OSX

I have run out of patience with the limitations of the GPT layout of my Macbook's hard disk. I would like to go back to Linux-only and get rid of OSX. My current layout is the following
    sda1: GPT layout table (afaik)
    sda2: OSX
    sda3: Arch / (also grub)
    sda4: /home
sda5: swap (but unusable due to said GPT limitations)
Should I just erase sda1 and sda2? I am worried that this will screw up grub and the whole GPT-MBR synchronisation stuff.
What would be the cleanest way to do this without major recovery operations?

Have you taken a look at the wiki?  I spent quite some time detailing the aspects of an Arch-only installation.  I would suggest "tarring" up your environment, reformatting, and "un-tarring" onto a newly mounted partition.  For example, the following command (which should be executed from an external environment such as the Arch Install CD) could be used to backup up your current root partition to a mounted, external device:
    tar cfpvz /path/to/external/device/root.sda3.tar.gz /mnt/sda3/
Following that, unmount all file systems in the /mnt/ folder and format your hard disk with your desired partition layout.  Next, mount your new / partition to the /mnt/ folder and run the following command to "un-tar" your backed-up root to the newly formatted file system:
    tar xfpvz /path/to/external/device/root.sda3.tar.gz -C /mnt/
The above commands could be repeated to "tar" and "un-tar" your home partition.  Furthermore, save the contents in /mnt/boot/ somewhere else if you want to use a separate partition for /boot/ this time around.  Finally, unmount any partitions in /mnt/, run /arch/setup, mount your /boot/ and / partitions from the installer menu, and skip to the GRUB installation phase.  All the information I have given you can be found through reading available online resources, as I have done for you.  You just have to be deliberate in your searching.

Yes, it's in your Applications folder and is called "Install OS X". Make sure to empty your trash afterwards to clear the space.

  • Sync iCal between OSX 10.4.11 and OSX 10.5.8

In what ways can iCal be synced between OSX 10.4.11 and OSX 10.5.8?
Can iCal 2.0.5 be installed on OSX 10.5.8 so both OS run the same version of iCal?
    If so, how?
Can iCal Calendars be moved to an external drive, and both iCal installs pointed to same location?
    From OSX10.5.8, I've copied files in ~/Library/Calendars/
to a folder on the external drive, then pointing OSX10.5.8 ~/Library/Calendars/ to the external drive folder.
As far as I can tell, iCal works fine, and I've deleted and edited calendars.
I then pointed OSX10.4.11 ~/Library/Calendars/ and OSX10.4.11 ~/Library/Application Support/iCal/Sources/ to the same calendar folder on the external drive.
Different calendars displayed in iCal 2.0.5 on OSX10.4.11 than on OSX10.5.8 and kept reappearing after deleting and restarting iCal 2.0.5.
I deleted 10.4.11 ~/Library/Calendars/ after finding reference indicating that iCal on OSX10.4.11 has different structure with data stored at ~/Library/Application Support/iCal/Sources/ instead of at ~/Library/Calendars/ on OSX10.5.8
(I must have mistakenly thought there was a ~/Library/Calendars/ folder in iCal 2.0.5 on OSX10.4.11)
I then deleted all the calendars from iCal 2.0.5 on OSX10.4.11 except one which would not allow deletion, and they remained deleted after shutting down and restarting iCal 2.0.5, but calendars stored on external drive still do not appear in iCal 2.0.5 on OSX10.4.11
Calendar .ics exports from iCal on 10.5.8 can be imported to iCal 2.0.5 on OSX10.4.11, but they do not retain structure.
Data from several calendars get mixed up together for some reason.
Any suggestions on how to get the two versions of iCal synced?
I have 2 drive partitions that I use and need to be able to share calendars between the OSX versions.

    Hello.
Most MacBooks can run at least 10.6, some can run 10.7 needed for iCloud.
    Snow Leopard/10.6.x Requirements...
    General requirements
       * Mac computer with an Intel processor
        * 1GB of memory (I say 4GB at least, more if you can afford it)
        * 5GB of available disk space (I say 30GB at least)
        * DVD drive for installation
        * Some features require a compatible Internet service provider; fees may apply.
        * Some features require Apple’s MobileMe service; fees and terms apply.
Which apps work with Mac OS X 10.6?...

    If it's a core Duo & not a Core2Duo, then it'll only run in 32 bit mode.
    Lion/101.7 System requirements
        •    x86-64 processor (Macs with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Intel Core i3, Intel Core i5, Intel Core i7, or Xeon processor.)
        •    At least 2GB of memory, I say 6 GB
        •    Latest version of Mac OS X Snow Leopard (10.6.8), with the Mac App Store installed
        •    At least 4GB of disk space for downloading, I say 50 GB.
Like Snow Leopard, Lion does not support PowerPC-based Macs (e.g., Power Macs, PowerBooks, iBooks, iMacs (G3-G5), eMacs).
Lion also does not support 32-bit Intel Core Duo or Core Solo based Macs. Rosetta is no longer available in Lion, which means Lion no longer supports PowerPC applications.

  • Osx 10.1 installs, won't boot-blank screen

I recently picked up a G3 from the local University salvage store for $15, bad floppy & no harddrive. So I dragged it home and set it up, added an old 14gig drive, put in an os 9.2.2 cd and off it went. Thinking that I might like to try getting os 10 on it I split the partitions into a 4gig and 10gig. So far so good. It seemed to rip through os 9, played dvds fine, and even ran Simcity 3000 smoothly.
And then I had to go and try Osx.
The installer ran fine, I selected the 4gb partition for Osx and sent it on its merry way. At the end of the install the "your computer will now restart" message came up, and then the reboot.
Now it starts, chimes, the monitor will kick on for a breif second and then off and nothing! I tried the cuda reset switch which did nothing. If you hold p-r-option-command, the screen will turn on show the Os 10.1s happy mac and restart. If you put the os 10.2 upgrade cd in you can here the cdrom reading off it as it loads it, but you cant see anything. I put the os 9 disk back in, and after a pram reset it will boot the os 9cd fine.
So now the system start folder is set back to os 9, and its working fine.
I really don't have a clue whats going on here. I've pulled all the pci cards, unhooked drives but the cd and hd trying to trouble shoot this with no luck. The battery in its good as it holds the time fine so I don't think thats the problem. I really don't need osx and all its compatability problems with the biege's, but somthing I can't have makes me that much more determined.
Heres a run down on the specs if it helps any.

onboard ati has the extra 4mb of ram
ide 12gig hd set to master (tried it every way)
2x apple dvd drive set to master
All the pci cards except the av/sound card are pulled at the moment.
Pc monitor hooked to an adapter on the outside of the case. This is the only thing I can think of that might be might be causing the problem yet, but I don't have any mac monitors so I cant check it. Is there any way to manualy set osx's display resalution through os9 if its the problem?
    Thank you for your help,
    Chris

I'm not planning on using the old girl for much more then tinkering around with, so the 4gb should be more then enough. Any encoding or that kind of stuff will probley be sent off to my Toshiba or Dell maybe the imac. I just enjoy messing around with the older legacy macs and was hopeing by getting osx on it I could justify having another box cluttering up my house (9 and counting lol).
I have the full install version of 10.1, my 10.2 cd is an upgrade only cd and will only install if it detects an early version of 10.

We started several days ago to install Maverick on our MBP17 / 8GB.  The installation runs fine and we are excited to use the new maverick OS.

After reboot the system becomes unusable because all available memory was eaten up by kernel_Task  and mds_Stores immidiately.
We contact  apple support and the answer was incredible: "You should not use Maverick because it is new and the first version"
End of support. Ticket is still open and no answer is arriving to us.
Unfortnately we need our system for real work and we lost already some days  !!!!. So we started  a reovery process by our own knowledge.
Now we started to recover our system from Time Machine backup at our OS X Server ML. Things are becoming worse !!!!
First time recovery runs fine ( despite the duration of more than  8 hours ) but system doesn't boot. OOhps !
Second Timme recovery was done using Ethernet and gives us a booting system with Mountain Lion after 7 hour.
But the Time Machine Backups for this MBP17 at our server are no longer Available. Back volume missing, in use or whatever as error message is known to Time Machine.

  • HT1544 I have misplaced my OSX 10.5 installation disks...

I have misplaced my OSX 10.5 installation disks, can I download to my MacBook Air a version of the startup discs and save it from there to an external thumb drive for installation on an old iBook G4?  Where would I find such files if this process is available?
I need to wipe the drive on the iBook G4 and reinstall the OS on a clean drive.
    Thanks for your suggestions.

Don't wipe anything until you are sure you can replace the OS.
It is common to clone an OS to an external disk and then replace it or put it on another compatible computer.
Carbon Copy Cloner does this easily with default settings - check their disk preparation (format) page first.
Here is my standard upgrade information in case you need it:
    Before the install
Ensure your data (at least all Home folders) is backed up before you install. Hard disks can fail at any time so it is important to regularly backup to an external disk with Time Machine or a third party alternative. Inexperienced users should follow Apple's install advice but experienced users may prefer to do a clean install.

    OS X 10.4.x - Tiger
    OS X 10.5.x - Leopard

    OS X 10.8.x - Mountain Lion

    Upgrade to Leopard
Those wishing to upgrade to Leopard should be aware that install disks can be expensive. Details: http://lowendmac.com/deals/best-os-x-leopard-prices.html Standard Leopard installers impose several hardware limitations including speed and RAM size but all these restrictions can be overcome. Google for details. Leopard works well at 500 MHz with 1 GB of RAM and many happy users have less than this.
    Upgrade beyond Leopard
OSs beyond OS X 10.5.8 require an Intel processor. If in doubt click the apple at the top left of your screen and select 'About this Mac'. This will give you your OS number. Then click 'More Info' to see which processor you have. If it says PowerPC you cannot upgrade to Snow Leopard and above. If you have an Intel Mac it is well worth upgrading to Snow Leopard now and then considering other options after that. You can buy Snow Leopard here: http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A
