Mavericks - Disk Damage Error

I've probably read over 50 pages in the last several hours and unfortunately, I haven't found an exact answer to this problem.
My situation like many, is that when I upgraded to OS Mavericks I got the, "could not install, the disk is damaged." So I've booted into Utilties, I don't have a back up of any sorts.
When I try to verify and repair Mac HD it says it cannot be repaired and I need to back up and reformat. I also cannot boot into safe mode because it just shuts down.
The main thing here is I'm just looking to save all of my files.
I have the "Reinstall OS X" option. Will this reinstall my old OS and will I have all of my files?
If not, then can someone please provide me with a simple step by step solution.
Another thing, if this helps. Is that when I start up by holding down "option" I am taken to the screen where I can select from 2 drives. I have the OS X Installer and the Recovery - 10.8. Will any of those help me return back to my previous OS with all my files still in place.
Thank you all again.

If you can't start your mac normaly and Disk Utility is reporting some problems which cannot be resolved and you don't have Time Machine Backup or any sort of backup, then my suggestion will be to temporarily use an external drive as a destination for a new installation of OS X. The Reason fot this is that you won't be able to install OS X on the partition that has some issue - Mavericks is not a fault. This problem was already on you disk and only came out during update.
So, get yourself an external USB drive (need to be empty or ready to be formated) which size is bigger than size of your data stored on internal drive.
Connect external USB drive to your mac and boot it to Recovery Mode and run first Disk Utility. From the side bar of Disk Utility, select your external drive (be careful and do not format internal drive) then go to ERASE tab/button and format select as Mac OS External (jurnaled). Name is optional. Go ahead (double check that this is not an internal drive) and click Erase...
After that, quit Disk Utility and from Utilities Window select Reinstall Mac OS X and when on the screen will ask you where to install OS X, choose your external drive.
Once installation is done, you will be prompt to create new user account and provide password. Choose some temporary name, different from the account name that you been using on original system.
Once desktop is up, open Finder then from top panel choose GO>Computer and check if Macintosh HD is listed. If yes, then double click on it and go to /Users and drag your whole folder (not the content of this folder) to external drive.
Once files are copied accross, before erasing internal disk, verify that files were copied successfully.

Since upgrading to Mavericks my xhd is not seen when starting the iMac. I have to reboot it each time for the iMac to see it. It is also making sounds.

    Hi,
    Thanks for the reply.
I had problems with an update from DevonThink. That's why I ran Disk Utility.
I usually run it after I notice a problem. Then I do a restart.
The problem with the xhd-A is new. It started after the Mavericks install. During the install I also had a xhd-B plugged in, but no problem with that. I've run Disk Utility on xhd-A. Problem still exisits.
To recap when xhd-A is plugged in when I start my iMac everyday it isn't seen.
Then I unplug the xhd-A power cord, plug it back in, and it is seen.
To answer your question, I've already tried your idea. I ejected the xhd-A, shut down the iMac. Then restarted it, then plugged in the xhd-A and it is seen.
The specific problem is I can't leave xhd-A plugged in to the iMac. I have to remove the power cord, then plug in the power cord each time for it to be seen. Frustrating. This didn't happen in the past.

  • I am in mavericks disk utility recovery mode as my mac book will not boot up & stays only on the grey apple screen. When I verify the disk I get open error5 :input /output error on Syst stuck on 1 minute pouring out over 50 error messages & still counting

I am in Mavericks disk utility recovery mode as my mac book pro will not boot up & stays on the Apple grey screen . When I verify disk permissions I get
Open error 5:"input/ output error" on syst with over 50 of this messages & still counting . Disk Utility says 1 minute
But this has been going on for over 10 mins .
I can not verify disk or repair disk .
I have tried to reinstall mavericks operating system but it says my hard drive is locked which is very strange .
Does anyone know what is going on here ?
My system looks like it has been totally corrupted . Thanks Andrew

Could be. The "lock" isn't actually looking for a password.
WARNING: This will completely erase the ENTIRE hard drive.
What you would need to do is boot to recovery > disk utility > select the MAIN drive on the left side > partition > change partition layout from CURRENT to 1 PARTITION > ensure on the right side it says Format : Mac OSX Extended (Journaled) then push APPLY.
Then if it will allow us, close the windows until you see the 4 options popup again and select "Reinstall Mac OS X" select the Mac HD and you should be good to go!

  • Shutdown while startup, disk full error on verbose

i have a mac book pro when starting , the gray screen appears, later the apple and 10 seconds later aprox, turn off
i try verbose mode and after turn off i can see a message “Disk full error"
    Operating system: OSX 10.9
322MB FREE OF 300GB .. (my girlfriend is a graphic designer and does not pay any attention to alerts ..)
I prove, smc reset, 2 chime sound test, safe mode (turn off too).
    performing tests were:
    1. Launch the recovery console ( from bootable usb osx mavericks) ,
    a. i probe unmount the volume Macintosh HD, not possible, because, its in use.
    a. verify disk ( Macintosh HD) , "the disk needs to be repair"
b . repair disk ( Macintosh HD) , Keys out of order , ... Utility cant repair disk , and restore your backed -up files
c . Check disk (320gb toshiba ..) , the partition map need to be repaired , because ... Problem with the EFI system partitions
d . repair disk (320gb toshiba ..) , but ... when repair , try with Recovery HD, and works fine (not Macintosh HD)
After that, the disc automatically unmounts and its not possible mount again (from terminal said "mount: /dev/disk0s2: unknow special file of file system")
2 . Probe I start with a recovery console (local disk)
same results (on repair 320gb toshiba.. the first time i run it, said "can’t perform live”, after that, same result like point 1
    3. restart, with recovery console (local disk)
    a. launch terminal and try to delete manually , go to /dev/disk0s2 (/Volumes/Macintosh HD) and can browse the disk  (ex /Users/xxxx/Desktop), but when tried rm, appears “Read-Only File System"
    4. Remove the HD from mac and put it on case, when i connect it via USB to another mac book pro, the OS, saids “can’t recognize the disk, initialize, ignore, eject)
it is possible unmount the volume and remount like read-write from recovery console?
is it possible to access the data in read-write mode for any way to delete some huge files?
its the only solution mount and external disk and make and tedious scp from Terminal???, if its possible
regards, sorry for my bad English
    Dario

There are lots of hidden directories. There could be actual data instead of alias mount points under "/Volumes" which is often one reason.
There are a couple programs to show where space is going, as well as sort output from terminal, but I prefer OmniGroup OmniDiskSweeper - look on MacUpdate - to show and access files. Program works fine even though shareware.
And yes, you might want to use the Raptor? for something else and get even WD 640GB for $75, or the 3rd gen VelociRaptor 300GB $289.
There are threads in "Using Leopard" regularly about "where did my space go."

  • 750GB Seagate External Drive - Disk Insertion error

I have two 750 GB Seagate External hard drives, which are daisy chained to my PowerMac G5. I was transfering files between external hard drives, when all of a sudden the computer crashed. Once I restarted, the computer gave a disk insertion error:
    Disk Insertion
The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer.
The options are: "Initialize..." "Ignore" and "Eject"
One of the external hard drives is fine, the one which was directly hooked up to the computer. However, the drive that was daisy chained still gives this error. I have tried connecting the drive to another mac, but it still gave this error. I also tried connecting it to a PC, and it was detected, but it did not show up under "My Computer."
Is there a way that I could save or re-format the hard drive WITHOUT loosing the data?
Please let me know. This is very urgent. I have a lot of important data on the hard drive. Any help/ideas/suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thank you very much.

Hello! Sometimes a large file transfer will lock or crash a computer. With a crash or hard restart the disk's directory is damaged and if disk utility can't repair it then DISKWARRIOR is about the only utility that can fix the problem. The data usually isn't gone. The disk's directory (road map) of where every piece of info is located on the drive has become corrupt hence there's nothing for it to find. Diskwarrior is the best utility for repairing the directory. Regular use of DW will prevent "most" disk problems as it's the directory that gets messed up rather than a physical problem with the disk in most cases. In cases where DW can't fix the problem DataRescue II can sometimes recover valuable data. Tom

  • Qosmio x505 disks damaged?

i would like to believe this in something to do with my computer and not the error of the disk suppliers
here is a copy of what i wrote in the survey that came along with the second set of these disks I order:
Qosmio X505 Recovery media disks 64bit:
me and my wife have ordered these recovery disks twice now. In the First set the 2 of 3 disk was severely damage. The second set the 1 of 3 disk was undamaged at a glance but upon using it i got a reoccurring error. Using the first 1 of 3 disk if gotten to the "Recovery of factory default, Preparing, copying files" stage of disk 2 of 3 <second set>. However its been on this stage for a whole day so i don't think its working. I haven't even had the opportunity to use either of the 3 of 3 disks.
    Summery of recovery disks ordered:
    Set 1. Disk 1 <works>, Disk 2 <major physical damage>, Disk 3 <???>
    Set 2. Disk 1 <error>, Disk 2 <copying files 24hrs?>, Disk 3 <???>
    <end>
also on a side note assuming that maybe it was maybe an issue with the hard drive. i tried installing it on different hard drives with custom partion sizes. i know its not the CD rom because it does work for at least one of the disks.

i had to reformat , to those who own the same laptop here is a copy of the mbr

  • 2008 Macbook OS 10.7.5 disk permission errors, freezes

    Hi, I have a 13" early 2008 MacBook 4,1, described as:
Processor  2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Memory  2 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
Graphics  Intel GMA X3100 144 MB
    Serial Number  W88280ZR0P6
    Software  Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5 (11G63)-
A few days ago it froze on startup. It loaded to my home window, I could move the cursor, but couldn't click on anything.
I got around that by unplugging from the wall and the battery, then it would run all right for a short while, then freeze again.
Ran Disk Utilities, verified and repaired the disk, and then found over 1,000 disk permission errors. Permissions errors were mainly from Safari or Itunes, a typical message line reads:
Permissions differ on "Applications/ITunes.app/Contents/Resources/tr.Iproj/InforDialogue ArtworkVieww.nib",should be drwxr-xr-x, they are -rxwr-xr-x.
I have the utility repair the disk permissions, which it says it does, then clear the window, and restart. When I go back to disk utiities, all the errors are back again.
I don't know what to do next. Re-install the Operating System? Get rid of Safari? (I hardly ever use ITunes, the other main source of error messages.) Take the machine to the local Mac shop? Any advice or insight would be appreciated.

Open Users & Groups preferences. Click on lock icon and enter your admin password. Click on the Add [+] button below the users list. Configure the new account and be sure to check the box for an Admin account. You also need to change the auto-login account which is done in Login Options. Log out of your account then log into the new one.
Install or Reinstall Mavericks or Mountain Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
OS X Mavericks- Erase and reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Erase and reinstall OS X
OS X Lion- Erase and reinstall Mac OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • Disk locked error

I'm trying to upgrade to Mountain Lion. I have an Imac 2007 mid year ( which is compatible ), and first the installation stopped because it said the mad hd disk was damaged. Now that I repair the disk, when I try to install I can't select the Mac HD because it says it's locked. What should I do? I don't want to erase everything because I have some important files that created recently. I did not expect this error, I'm used to a smooth transition with new apple Operating Systems. Please help me, any advice is welcome.

Ok guys, I figured it out. What I did was:
First: I saved some of my important documents on an external hard drive ( just in case )
Second: I started "disk utility" to verify the Mac HD disk. The verification told me that there was an error and that to repair it I would have to use : Restore HD. Now what is Restore HD? The message said to restart the computer and hold donw the keys: Command and R until you see the apple logo appears. Then the there is 4 options to pick: Restore from time machine, get help online, disk utility, and there was another one that I can't remember, but you have to pick "disk utility". You select the Mac HD disk, and the option of "repair disk" is available. You click that and wait. When the disk is repaired. I clicked the "verify permissions" option. Just in case the "disk locked" error appears again. After that is done. I restarted the computer with the regular (using the old lion, not the new one) I looked on applications for my Mountain Lion file, and followed the instructions.
It took maybe 40 minutes. At one point, maybe 15 minutes in, the screen of my computer turned black. Don't freak out as I did, it is just the power saver. Then the system restarts itself and then there was Mountain Lion.
I hope this helps! I read some articles first before trying this, some is not that I randomly came up with it. If you have the: "disk damaged" or "disk locked" errors. Try this, and see if it works! Thanks everyone!!

  • Portege R100 disk read error

I have a portege R100 and today i am getting the message disk read error. Despite trying several time to clear this by using ctrl alt delete, the message persists. Does this mean the hard disk drive has failed and needs to be replaced?

Its possible that some sectors on the HDD are corrupt or damage.
You could try to run scandisk and additional you could check the HDD with the 3rd party application like a HDD generator
You coudl try to search in the googel for such aplication:

  • The Notorious "Audio Configuration is Damaged" Error

i've seen it discussed on every Logic-related message board on the web. no solution seems to have been found.
i've been another victim of this strange error since last night.
it happened while i was assigning a software instrument to a track.
i've trashed logic preferences, repaired disk permissions. nothing has helped so far.
saved the project with a different name. still the same.
a message keeps popping up saying "Audio Configuration is Damaged".
it pops up every time i change an instrument, track settings or open plugin windows on a track, or try to save the project.
i do eventually manage to perform whatever i need, but only after clicking OK each time that error message pops up.
what's this? any news on how to fix this?

    Hi everyone,
I just ran into the "audio configuration is damaged" error twice tonight while working on a project. I wasn't able to recover the first project which cost me about 4 hours of work so I started a new project and after a couple hours got that error again while dragging a sample from the loop browser into a new track. I was able to load up a backup before I got the error, saved that as a new project file and apparently it's working again but clearly this is unacceptable.
I'm currently considering doing a fresh install of both Mac OS X and Logic Studio.
Apple, please look into this instead of archiving the threads related to the "audio configuration is damaged" bug. There are at least 10-20 threads already on this topic, yet they always get archived. I'm seriously considering ditching Logic and doing my arranging/composing also in ProTools from now on.

  • Does anyone know how to solve: "Firmware update failure. Disk write error"?

    Hi all,
Here is the list of all what went wrong and where I am now:
    1. My Ipod worked well
    2. I wanted to update it, you know, the normal thing with Itunes
    3. Every time I tried, my computer froze. I was unable to add only one song (both automatically and manually).
    4. I took my external drive (where my music is) at work and tried again: same result.
    5. I decided to run the Updater I have on the CD that came with the Ipod.(2005-02-07; I usually avoid the newer version, having had once a problem when putting a newer version of Updater).
    6. The Updater was unable to operate any action on my Ipode (I don't remember the messages now).
    7. Like I tried what I describe here above like a hundred time. I decided to format the Ipod with Windows (My Computer, right click on the Ipod, format).
    8. It did and now I have only the famous folder with an exclamation mark on my Ipod.
    9. Now when I am running the Updater, it says it cannot Restore the factory settings giving this message "Firmware update failure. Disk write error".
I would appreciate any help because, during the last 2 hours, I read and tried all I found on the Support Help here on the Apple web side without any result yet.
Thank a lot for your answer

    Hi Cyrille,
Have you looked at Knowledge Base Document #301267 on "Disk cannot be read from or written to" when syncing iPod or "Firmware update failure" error when updating or restoring iPod?

    I'm running and iMac 20-inch  early 2009
Processor  2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Memory  8 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
Graphics  NVIDIA GeForce 9400 256 MB
    Software  OS X 10.8.4 (12E55)

    Step 1
Quit Calendar. Triple-click the line below to select it:
    ~/Library/Calendars/Calendar Cache
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
    Services ▹ Reveal
from the contextual menu. A Finder window should open with a file named "Calendar Cache" selected.
Move the selected file to the Trash. There may be one or two other files in the same folder with names that begin in "Calendar Cache". If so, delete those files too.
    Step 2
Empty the Trash if you haven't already done so. If you use iPhoto, empty its internal Trash as well:
    iPhoto ▹ Empty Trash
Then reboot. That will temporarily free up some space.
According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of available space on the startup volume (as shown in the Finder Info window) for normal operation. You also need enough space left over to allow for growth of your data. There is little or no performance advantage to having more available space than the minimum Apple recommends. Available storage space that you'll never use is wasted space.
To locate large files, you can use Spotlight. That method may not find large folders that contain a lot of small files.
You can more effectively use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper (ODS) to explore your volume and find out what's taking up the space. You can also delete files with it, but don't do that unless you're sure that you know what you're deleting and that all data is safely backed up. That means you have multiple backups, not just one.
Deleting files inside an iPhoto or Aperture library will corrupt the library. Any changes to a photo library must be made from within the application that created it. The same goes for Mail files.
Proceed further only if the problem isn't solved by the above steps.
ODS can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To see everything, you have to run it as root.
    Back up all data now.
Install ODS in the Applications folder as usual. Quit it if it's running.
Triple-click the line of text below to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):
    sudo /Applications/OmniDiskSweeper.app/Contents/MacOS/OmniDiskSweeper
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The application window will open, eventually showing all files in all folders. It may take some minutes for ODS to list all the files.
I don't recommend that you make a habit of doing this. Don't delete anything while running ODS as root. If something needs to be deleted, make sure you know what it is and how it got there, and then delete it by other, safer, means. When in doubt, leave it alone or ask for guidance.
When you're done with ODS, quit it and also quit Terminal.

  • "A Disk Read Error Has Occured" past 239 FSB?

The title says it all.  I'm runnin an Neo Platinum 2 and when booting up overclocked past 239 FSB I get "A Disk Read Error Has Occured" and it asks me to reboot.  Is this as simple as my SATA being overclocked too far?  I was under the impression this board had an SATA lock, but I could be wrong.  Any suggestions on getting past this?  Or have I reached my peak?

  • "No Disk Found" error during installation of Solaris 10[11/06] on HP 6710b

    Hallo Guys,
I am trying to install Solaris 10 on my HP 6710b lap top but it fails with "No Disk Found" error.
I used "Solaris 10 support tool" to check my system and it reports that my system is supported.
You can find the report bellow. I am sure that my disk is OK and I am also using "CD-ROM" option in BIOS for installing solaris from my Solaris DVD.
I have also updated the drivers using "CPQary3-1.71-solaris10-i386".
    Please help me.
    Thanks,
    Qumar
