Mavericks Finder - how default to "double click opens new window"?

I am old and set in my ways. I like having the Finder open a new window when I double click a folder. Since 1984 I've arranged Finder windows in positions and sizes that suit me and I have never seen any reason to change.
In Mavericks however there does not seem to be a way to default to, "double click opens new Finder window". My choices under Finder preferences are, open in the same window; or open in a tab. I don't care for either.
Does anyone know of a way to restore the traditional Finder behavior in Mavericks? Thanks in advance.

Every finder folder clicked opens new window

I own a late 2011 13" Macbook Pro, which I have upgraded to Mountain Lion and also Bootcamped with a proffessional version of Windows 7. When I first got it, I had downloaded a Preference Pane called "Secrets" which opened up some more technical and deep settings menu where you could choose more options. Their website is here: http://secrets.blacktree.com. Unfortunately, I clicked an option once that made every folder clicked a new window. So when in icon view, or list view, every new item I click becomes a window. I know this isn't standard because my friends early 2011 MBA running Lion does no such thing. I uninstalled the pref pane long ago, and didn't notice it until recently. It isn't a horrible issue, but simple tasks get really annoying. After reinstalling the pref pane and searching for an option, there is no such thing. Can somebody figure out a way out of it? My buddys laptop closes the previous window after an icon is clicked. It's really annoying when getting to my homework folder leaves my screen looking like this.
Any help is appreciated.

Click on the Desktop. Go to the menu at top. Click on "Finder" and go down to "Preferences."
In "Finder Preferences," click on "General."
In General, UNcheck "Always open folders in a new window."

Safari 5 Opens but no window comes up? Even after I click open new window.

So i downloaded Safari 5 form the update and then from the full download install.
My problem is...
Safari opens.
but no window opens.
I go to the top I click safari and go down to "Open new window"
Still nothing.
I click to quit safari.
It says "0,1,2,3 windows are open in safari do you want to quit anyway?"
(depending on how many times I clicked to open a new window)
but even tho it is sayign windows are open my computer doesnt show them anywhere.
any help people?

Hi,
Try launching Safari from your Applicatioms folder instead of the Dock.
If that doesn't help ...
Go here for trouble shooting 3rd party plugins or input managers which might be causing the problem. Safari: Add-ons may cause Safari to unexpectedly quit or have performance issues

Every time I click on a link to open it in a new window, the new window is tiny and I have to resize it every time, does anyone know how I can stop it opening new windows so small?

I am using firefox 8.0.1 this only happens when I click a link that is automatically set to open in a new window, or when I choose to open a link in a new window. Firefox never remembers what I resize that window too.

this is the as3 forum. you're using as2.
and you need to clarify your terms. a new window means a new
browser window. if you want to load your swf in the current window,
load it into a target movieclip or _level.

Clicking Finder in the Dock doesn't open new window

I started having this issues today. I've repaired permissions and the disk from the recovery menu disk utility. Anything else anybody could recommend to fix this?

This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your documents or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this behavior; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Please take this step regardless of the results of Step 1.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.

How to stop Finder from opening new windows to view contents of folders.

I have 2 folders on my desktop, called "Home" and "Work." Both are aliases to files stored in user/documents on my HD. Both contain many folders within folders within folders and, ultimately, documents. When I double click on the "Home" desktop alias, a finder window opens showing contents. When I click on any folder within that window, it does what I want it to...switches to the contents of that folder (within same window, without opening a new one.) This works for everything in that folder.
When I double click on a folder within the "Work" folder, however, it opens a new window at every level. By the time I get to the document I want, I may have 5 or 6 windows open, which I then have to manually close.
I have gone into Finder/Preferences/General and the "Always open new window" box is NOT checked. Any one know why it would still be doing this? (No new applications are opening when I click on the folders, just a new finder window.) And why would it do it for one desktop folder and not the other?
I looked through discussions till my head spun and only saw the Finder/Preferences fix, so I'm hoping there's another fix, like a preference file somewhere that I just need to trash. Any help would be appreciated.

I don't know if this is the problem, but for windows in "Icon" or "List" view that are set so that the "Toolbar" is not showing, a folder opened within that window will tend to open a new window. This is just a difference in behaviour between the two modes. To show / hide the toolbar, try clicking the elongated button in the upper right corner, in the "titlebar" of the window, or choose "Show Toolbar" / "Hide Toolbar" from the "View" menu.
Additionally, a workaround might be to switch to "Column" view ("View" > "as Columns" ⌘3), since opening a folder within a window in "Column" view does not appear to spawn a new window, even with the "Toolbar" hidden. Another option might be to hold down the "option" key while opening the folder - this causes the previous window to close as the new window is opened.

How to open new window

I have developed a JTable. What I need to do next is to have listeners for each of the cells in the table such that when the cell is double clicked, a new window should pop up.
What listener needs to be implemented for this? Will the TableModelListener work?
Any sample code, anyone?

Add a MouseListener to the JTable. Look through some of the methods in the JTable class to see how you can find which cell was clicked.

In EP7 Ess, how to remove "open new window" for ESS areapage

You can set the workprotect mode on a global level so its used for every user.
Systemadministration -> Systemconfiguration -> Service Configuration -> Applications -> com.sap.portal.epcf.loader -> Services -> epcfloader. Set the "workprotect.mode.default". After you have saved the entry. ricght click on com.sap.portal.epcf.loader in the tree menu and choose "administrate". Click on "restart".

Open new window: 1st try does nothing; close repeat process and window opens (everytime); why?

When I try to open a link by right clicking, open new window, my first attempt always does not follow the link and the new window is blank (everytime). I close the blank window, repeat the open link in new window and it actually works and opens the link in the new window. This never used to happen, and for about the last two weeks or so, this has been a source of irritation.

If it is good in the Firefox SafeMode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. <br />

Open a camera raw file by double clicking it in Windows Explorer

I am running Lightroom 1.3.1 on a personal computer running Windows XP. Is it possible to double click open a camera's raw file (in my case it is a Canon camera CR2 file) that I can see within an open folder in Windows Explorer, and have the Lightroom application start up to display the image?
I tried to "associate a file type to a program application" by right clicking the raw file, choosing Open With, Choose Program, I could not find Lightroom under the default list Other Programs so I browsed to the LR application that was found in the Programs folder to select it, and then I chose "always use this selected program to open this kind of file".
Now when I open a folder in Windows Explorer using the icon types display, I see an icon with an "A" for Adobe showing up for all of the raw files in that folder, so it appears to be associating the file correctly to the LR application. However when I double click on a raw file to open it there is an error message that comes back stating the program is "not a valid Win32 application". Subsequently the file does not open up to view the image.

The simple answer is No. So remove your association of images from the "open with" Lightroom. It does not work that way and never will.
As you may know, Lightroom is a program that allows you to manage your images and a key part of its operation is a database file; So when you start Lightroom, you cannot even get it to open an image file directly from disc; in other words it does not allow you to "browse" for images and display them. (use some other program to do that, e.g. FastStone image viewer. I think it will display Canon CR2 files, it does work for Nikon's nef files.)
The key to understanding Lightroom, is that you create a catalog file ( the database) and then import pictures into that database. Then, within Lightroom, you can browse through your pictures in the Library module; (and of course you can do a lot more than that in the Develop module etc).

Configuring KDE (aterm transparency/double-click opening)

I had fluxbox working and setup so aterm was pinned and transparent to look like it's part of the desktop. I recently decided to try out kde and wanted to do the same thing, but it opens with a black background instead of transparent. I can set it to other colors though. I was curious if anyone else has experienced this and knew how to solve it.
I'd be open to using other terminals, though I haven't been quite been satisifed with other ones I've tried. Konsole and Eterm almost work. Konsole leaves a small white line around the outline, even when I used the KDE menu to configure it to have no window border, that just removes the window decorations. Eterm also leaves a grey menu on top, which I'd prefer not to have, but didn't see an option to turn this off, though I'll admit I haven't looked too hard. I did get gnome-terminal to look the way I want, but it seems like running that probably loads more than I'd really like it to if I'm running KDE.
Also while I'm posting, I thought I'd ask a probably simple question. I want to change the setting so double-clicking opens directories instead of single clicking. I remember from when I tested out knoppix when I first started there was an obvious place, but I can't seem to find it in the new version. There was a wizard when I first started KDE that let me choose, but I deleted it from the menu, and now can't seem to find it again.

You didn't mention your previous method so I'm not sure how to try and duplicate your issue. I've never desired to eliminate the borders, but something like this should get you transparency (just advance the trailing number to increase transparency):

Everytime I click on a link, new window would only open in new tab not new window. How would I change this default to open new windows instead of new tab?

From the Safari Menu Bar click Safari/Preferences (or Command + comma on your keyboard).
Click Tabs. You can set your preferences there.
