Mavericks: Frequent freezes 8-10 minutes duration - MacBookPro

Grateful for  tips.
My MacBook Pro can freeze for periods of 8-10 minutes. Earlier I thought it was permanent hangups so after 3-4 minutes I did reboot. After reading some discussions here and also on Sophos I found that some persons had waited for some 10 minutes and everything started to work again so I tried that for the last two days and it seems to work for me as well.
When the PowerBook starts to freeze often one application hang and later it can be followed by some more. In the Force Quit window or in the Activity Monitor they are marked as 'Non Responding'. If Activity Monitor is not froozen you can se more hanging processes there. Very often System UI-Server is among the non responsive ones.
With freeze I mean that it is not possible to start any new applications or stop any started one (it is not possible to Force Quit any processes during the freeze). But sometimes it is possible to switch between windows and applications and you can often also scroll in the existing windows. But if trying to choose a menu item in an already open application that application often becomes 'Non Responsive' as well.
When Safari and Chrome are 'Non Responding' you can sometimes se a ' Waiting for Cache' message in the footer. During the freeze there is very little CPU used (activity monitor) and also little internet traffic (according to Little Snitch Network Monitor) and I can often have reasonable amount of free memory available.
Here are some details about the latest freeze which occurred today around 16:58 and 17:09.
This time Google Chrome was trying to reload a web page but the web page was never displayed. After maybe 5 minutes Google Chrome became Not Responding in the Force Quit window and in the Activity Monitor.  No more processes became unresponsive this time (normally 4 to 6 processes become unresponsive - most often Safari, Chrome and System UI-server and sometimes Activity Monitor and a couple more.)
After the freeze was over at about 17:09 I copied the Console: Diagnostic andUsage Messages: for the period. (See below the EtreCheck).
Sorry for the long entry.
Here is an EtreCheck taken after a reboot

    - I've used Firefox exclusively for around 2 years.
    - My outlook express has no problems
    - other programs seem unaffected; it seems peculiar to Firefox.
    - my main use is surfing the net, primarily entering competitions on line via specialist competition sites.
    - every day at some stage(s) I have to switch computer off as Firefox has got very slow/sticky/freezes.
I'm not techy by any means, but I can only thing of un- and re-installing to hopefully start with a clean slate.

Sounds like something is keeping Firefox from closing properly. See this: <br />

My mac os frequently freezes for one to two minutes at a time. I have uninstalled and reinstalled flashplayer 11.3 several times because I sometimes get a crash report on flashplayer. I would like other suggestions as to what more I can do.

The next time you have the problem, note the exact times when it starts and ends: hour, minute, second.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the page that opens.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.
Scroll back in the log to the time you noted above. Post any messages timestamped during that interval – the text, please, not a screenshot.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Edit it out by search-and-replace in a text editor before posting.

  • MacBook Pro frequent freezes problem

    Hi everyone,
My MacBook Pro frequently freezes despite very light use. I took it to a "genius" today, but he was not very helpful. Actually, it froze again right at the apple store while they were checking it. The log showed some errors from Quicksilver right before the freeze and they suggested disabling Quicksilver for a while. At the same time they said that Quicksilver is "solid" and should not cause any serious problems. They also recommending deleting flash plugins, but admitted that it was unlikely that a flash plugin was causing freezes.
Nothing came up during hardware tests, and I already did a clean reinstall of the OS (twice).
I would appreciate any suggestions. The Macbook Pro is 6 months old, 17in, 2.66 Ghz Core i7 with 8 GB of RAM. There is 300+ GB of free space on the hard disk.
    Thanks

I had similar issues. I formatted, did a clean install, and ran software update to make sure everything was up to date. Then I logged in for the first time, ran handbreak and 6 vlc windows and it froze within 10 minutes. This is most likely not caused by Quicksliver or any other software. You should register your complaints in this thread to keep them all together:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2768351&tstart=0
Then you should call apple care to register your complaint. I've scheduled a call for tomorrow.

  • Frequent Freezing (Captivate 7)

    Hello,
I am testing Captivate 7 after a few months now of familiarizing myself with Captivate 6.When editting my recorded Video Demo I have noticed very frequent freezing of the program. Is there an auto save feature when using Video Demo mode or something? I ask because when I began writing down the times of the freezing and found it was every 10 minutes on the hour, as though it was scheduled. It only freezes for a minute or two each time, but this is still inconvenient. I was hoping there was a way to turn off whatever option is causing this. I am running the Captivate 7 trial on a Windows 7 machine; nothing else is open and the machine in question has no internet connection. I have not noticed this issue with Captivate 5 or 6 (Though frequent freezing/ crashing sometimes occurs with those versions it is usually the fault of RAM and large file sizes), nor have I encountered it when created SCORM modules. It only occurs in video demo editting.

Hi Express1999, I had the same issue. Sankaram from Adobe provided me with the fix below:
We have a hot fix for you for the issue “Adobe CP7 app to freeze every 10 minutes for about 15 seconds”. Please validate and let us know your feedback.

  • Frequent freezes since update to 10.6.8

    Hi all,
Thanks for you help in advance
I updated to 10.6.8 and first had a problem with the dock using 100% CPU, I worked around this using the fix provided here http://bit.ly/mPCVii
The thing is, I have nother problem now, every once and a while (20 minutes, 40 minutes, etc ...) one app hangs, so I switch to a new app or go to the dock or try to force quit it and the whole computer freezes for 20-30 seconds and then eveyrthing comes back to normal.
This happens whether I've got 1 or 10 apps launched and it also happens whether I'm on a simple app like TextEdit, Chrome or Safari or more powerful ones like Parallels, Photoshop, etc ... which makes me beleive that this isn't an app oriented issue.
Also, after the update to 10.6.8 and after the Airport Update, I had to repair permissions for these, they all got repaired using disk utility except for one which is the remote desktop agent (ARDagent), myabe this is linked sonce there was a security issue in Leopard 2 years ago with this.
I've also tried resetting PRAM and rebooting in Safe Mode.
    Thanks for your help gents.
    Kind Regards,
    Arnaud
    MacBook Pro 2011 15'
    2 GHz Intel Core i7
    8Gb RAM
    512Gb crucial SSD

    Arnaud,
I am also experiencing the frequent freezes and the 100% CPU usage since the upgrade. I looked online and fixed the CPU usage with the fix mentioned in the thread but still have the freezes.
I just verified my permissions and i had a bunch issues. I repaired them and now they're reporting ok. I'm going to try resetting SMC and I hope that takes care of it.
I read your comment about the SATA II drives and i wanted to let you know i don't think it's that. I had two SATA 2 drives in my macbook and upgraded to 2 SATA 3 drives two days ago. I thought the freezes were related to one of my drives but now i not sure. I don't remember having any problems with my old SSDs but then again i can't remember if i upgraded to 10.6.8 when i had those in my system. I guess what i'm saying is that it appears the problem occurs regardless of if you have SATA 2 or SATA 3 SSDs in the system.
Something that i found odd was some of my xbench scores. Before i fixed the CPU problem i received about a 600 for my SSDs. Right after i fixed it went down to about 440. I did the permission fix and it went back up to 500 then right back down to 440s. I don't know if that has anything to do with the upgrade but it's definitely odd...
I'm half tempted to reinstall OSX not upgrade to 10.6.8. I could see that stops the freezes stop and if the Xbench results go back to the 600s....  If not, Lions only a week away. Maybe that will fix everything. Hopefully someone has some suggestions. If i decide to reinstall ill post my findings.

  • Sudden Frequent Freezing

    Hi,
My Macbook is a few years old and used constantly and has been glitchy for a while, but has been functional. it freezes a fair amount, but usually only for a short time, and when I restart, it works fine for a least a day (i tend to leave it on with a lot of tabs open which causes issues, but i can always easily fix them with a restart).
A few days ago, it became virtually non-usable. Itunes and Adium work fine, but when I restart it and try to logon to wireless, it starts generally giving the spinning wheel and freezing. Firefox is non-usable. It will work ok for about a minute, but can't even handle one tab. When I try to scroll, switch tabs, or close one, it freezes and does the spinning wheel for solid minutes at a time. It happens so frequently I really can't use it. Sometimes it just won't stop and I've had to restart almost a dozen times in one day by holding down the power button since it is frozen.
This happened for seemingly no reason, and now restarting is making no difference because it happens again as soon as I open Firefox, although it does not seem to be exclusive to Firefox. Restarting has always made it work fine, and now is having no effect. I'm not sure what's going on.
Any ideas? Thanks so much for reading...it's driving me crazy.
Ignore typos -I'm on a netbook so I can do this and the keyboard is tiny.

    Hi Julie,
since a couple of days ago, I have a very similar problem.
The Macbook works fine for a time (can be half an hour), but after that, frequent freezes occur. The spinning wheel will turn up and the Macbook will be unusable for a minute or so. This happens more and more often until the Macbook becoems unusable.
Shutting down and rebooting does not solve the problem with me. Shutting down and waiting does. Sound like a temperature problem? Istat does not report anything unusual (ca. 40° CPU temp) - very strange.
I already tried to reset the SMC (btw - how do I know that I succeeded?)
I am using Snow Leopard having installed all the latest updates (10.6.6).
So If anybody has any ideas what else to try, give us a hint.

I have been having lots of problems with my iPad 2 freezing since I downloaded the IOS7.  It freezes for several minutes each time this happens.  Is there something you can suggest that I do to eliminate this problem in the future?

First thing to try is a reset: Hold down the home button along with the sleep/wake button until you see the apple, then let go.

Why does iTunes freeze up for minutes at a time when modifying INFO (CMD-i) ?  My files are not corrupted after it is done like many other threads i have readed.  Sometimes it's changing the title of a movie or editing the season and episode number of a TV show ect.....

    Yup same here
I am running the latest iTunes, the latest updates to the OS and on an iMac 3.4GHz Quad core i7 with 8GB of RAM and the music stored on local HDD.
Still locks up iTunes for between 2 minutes up to 20 minutes.
    Really annoying.
If you find a fix please, please let me know, I have just been throwing hardware at it with no joy at all

  • Firefox freezes every few minutes for a few seconds.

Firefox keeps freezing every few minutes, for a few seconds at a time. It's infuriating. It just happened right now while I was typing "infuriating". It's happened since I installed the Facebook Video Chat Plug-In, but I uninstalled that and it keeps happening.

Probably an over active security or "cleaning" program that's kicking in every few minutes and messing with Firefox.

  • Frequent freezes when I upgraded to Snow Leopard on my MacBook Pro/Aug. 09.

I'm becoming very frustrated as my brand new, 2 week old, aluminum MacBook Pro 15in, is frequently freezing. I don't know what to do because I don't know what's causing it. The specifications of my MacBook Pro should be able to multi-task although I rarely ever have more than three programs open at once. Although, I do still see frequent freezes even with one application open.
I have no idea what to do. Can anyone help me with my problem?
    Thanks in advance!

I'm not sure why or how this might've helped, but it's the only thing that I did recently that seems to have fixed the issue. About a week ago I decided to keep the Activity Monitor open so that I could see what was happening when things started freezing. Turns out that the "data written" graph under the 'Disk Activity' section was maxing itself out each time things started freezing up.
I tried to do a disk repair withing OS X but was told to reboot it. I did that, fixed some disk permissions and then was told that the disk itself didn't need repairing.
I rebooted after that and have been going crash/freeze free for at least a week since then. I have no idea if it was really what caused things to start working again or if it was a fluke, but here's what I did:
    1) Placed the OS X CD in my drive and rebooted.
    2) Ran the Disk Utility application and clicked 'Verify Disk Permissions'.
    3) It reported some issues, so then I clicked 'Repair Disk Permissions', where it fixed them.
    4) Just to see how things were, I clicked 'Verify Disk' where I was told that everything looks okay.
Seems to be working great since then! Good luck!

As old as your iMac is, have you cleaned out the dust? Dust buildup can lead to over heating issues. Remove any and all things plugged into it including the power cord, Remove the RAM access grille. Vacuum all openings starting with the RAM access area (air intake). Vacuum all ports and plugs, DVD slot and the opening across the top of the rear of the body. Blow compressed air through all your openings and vacuum again to remove any dust you loosend. Reinstall the RAM grille. Plug in the keyboard and mouse if not blue tooth. Insert power cord...
You are now in a perfect position to do a
    SMC RESET
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and ALL peripherals.
    Wait 15 seconds.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Wait another 5 seconds and press the power button to turn on the computer.
It is the 5 second timing that initiates the reset.
Here is a link to a Widget to monitor your temps and other operations:
    http://islayer.com/apps/istatpro/
since you are running 10.6.8 did you install the combo update?
    Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1
It is more stable than the regular version.
You could use your original install disc and boot from the disc, run Disc Utility and do a repair disk.

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, or by a peripheral device.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including Wi-Fi on certain iMacs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.
