Mavericks: Grid for Mission control & Expose?

Hello everyone,
I was wondering if someone could help me with the following issue: I am trying to find something (a setting, a patch, a utility?) that would lock the placement of the app previews in Exposé or within one space in mission control (not the order of spaces, for which I know there's a setting available). The reason I'm asking that is this: as we all know when you have multiple apps open in one desktop (space) and you invoke the mission control it creates a very handy way to see all the running apps and quickly switch to the one you need (or several windows of one app in exposé). HOWEVER, once you switch to another app and open the mission control again, the order of the windows is sometimes rearranged (always rearranged in exposé). This prevents me from quickly switching to apps just by remembering where their previews were located in the mission control/exposé overview the last time around and I spend additional time looking for the one I need. I searched all over internet but nobody seems to have asked this question before. Maybe there's such a simple solution that I don't see it? Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
Rob

Not quite clear on the question and can't offer a solution. However, are you familiar with the TAB + COMMAND shortcut to switch through open applications? I have always found this easier than Mission Control, and may be beneficial based on this statement:

  • Swiping for Mission Control changes in Mavericks?

In Mountain Lion I can three finger swipe up to get to Mission Control, then without lifting my fingers from the trackpad swipe down to bring the screen back.  In Mavericks I have to lift my hand from the trackpad to get back out of Mission Control.  I cannot find a setting to change that behavior.  Is this an intentional change in Mavericks?  It's ashame if it is.
    Thanks.

I just played around with this again. I can swip back and forth with out picking up my fingers. However, it's more complexed than a simple "return swipe".
Swipe up for Mission Control. Then a swipe down and back up for normal.

  • Macbook pro w/ Mavericks - right command and right option functioning as shortcuts for mission control and show desktop

    Hello,
All of a sudden my right command and right option keys are functioning as shortcuts for mission control and show desktop respectively. I haven't changed anything and can't seem to find any shortcut option in system preferences to change it. Control + up still works for mission control as default, and F11 is still show desktop. Left command and left option are working as normal.
Any suggestions? I have a feeling theres some silly little thing I've missed...
    Thanks.

    Hello benja_d
That is an interesting issue with the keyboard. To help isolate the issue, open up the Keyboard view to see if there are any keys being held down while you are typing to see if that is the issue. You will also will want to try this in another user on your computer to see if it something that is User specific or system wide. Let me know if you have figured out this part and I can help you further.
One or more keys on the keyboard do not respond

  • Mission Control/ Expose issue with stacked pages hard to view. Please help

Is it just me or is there a real issue with the way Mission Control/ Expose displays these stacked windows? For instance, I had about 6 finder windows open, showing 6 different folders on my Desktop. If I then use Mission Control to quickly access a particular folder, it displays all my finder windows together, stacked up on one another and this makes it almost impossible to view which particular folder i want. It doesnt have the folder names displayed so this is seriuosly time consuming now. Is this something im doing wrong, or is it a valid issue?
    many thanks

If you are just trying to see all the Finder windows which are available, just invoke App expose. I use a 4 finger swipe down. If you are in finder, just swipe. If you are in another application, hover your mouse over the Finder icon in the dock and swipe. All the windows are easy to see.
(You can, of course, do this with any application, not just the Finder.)

  • Folders for Mission Control Desktops

I think this would be a solution for seperate folders for Mission Control Desktops!
It would be very useful to be able to choose visibility for folders. What I mean is if I have different desktops on mission control then I could have separate folders for different desktops. I realize that if a desktop gets deleted this would cause problems and those folders would get deleted, but wonder if you created a mission control main folder where all folders on the hard drive are located and then you can go into that folder and choose visibility options. Like I have a school desktop and a work desktop so I could "right click>get info>" and  so I would choose ~/work_Desktop not just ~/Desktop. This would allow for people to literally feel like they had separate computers for work, personal, etc.. PLEASE consider this!! It would take mac to a different level and superior to PCs.
Do you think this would work?

This is intriguing, not least of all because the semantic problem of using the word "desktop" to refer to completely different things has made some people pretty grumpy
I use compulsively pushing the envelope of my work environment as a way to keep my scripting skills in shape, and so I couldn't resist doing a quick proof-of-concept to see if implementing what you want is possible without hacking anything that an average users shouldn't touch.  There's a very workable solution at the level of what I think of as "elegant band-aids."  I can see it would even possible to have it both ways - a desktop shared between all spaces and one that's unique to each space.
It is.  It's not even difficult - it requires understanding a few simple concepts, basic familiarity with Automator, enabling the root account on your system and about 5 lines of AppleScript that I've already written and tested.
I'm going to do it for my own use, but if anyone else wants it, just ask and I'll type up the instructions.  If enough people want it, I'll write a script to automate it.  lleH, if there's a clamor, I'll write an little app.  I can understand why Apple would choose not to implement it in the interest of elegance and simplicity, but also understand why expert users would like to complicate matters just a bit.

  • New problem keyboard shortcuts for mission control in Mavericks

I have a MacBook Pro Retina and make heavy use of multiple desktops in Mission Control and use control keys (^1, ^2, etc.) to switch desktops.
Sometimes I use the built-in laptop keyboard and sometimes I have an external keyboard attached, which has a numeric keypad.
Previously, pressing "control" and the "1"  on the numeric keypad worked the same as presing "control" and the "1" in the row of number keys across the top of the keyboard. Now, in Mavericks, it seems like the system does not treat these as the same keystrokes. I cannot find a way to configure the keyboard shortcuts so that I can use the numeric keypad to switch Mission Control desktops when the keyboard is attached and still be able to use the regular number keys when I'm working on the laptop's built-in keyboard.
Any ideas how to fix this?
    Thanks,
    John

I figured it out.  ^1 typed from the number keys is not equivalent to ^1 typed from the numeric keypad.  So, when you go into system prefs / keyboard / shortcuts / mission control, it may LOOK the same, but it is not.  You simply have to select each of your spaces and change them to ^1, ^2, ^3, etc., using the NUMERIC keypad.  It will look the same to you, but it will work properly after that.

  • How can i use my pictures for Mission Control Spaces in Lion?

How do I get a chosen selection of my own photos to be available for use as desktop pictures, with a different one for each Space in Mission Control in Lion?
I have a new Macbook Air, Thunderbolt display and Lion.

As long as your Office for Mac is 2011, you will have no problems using the programs.  If it is the Office for Mac 2008 version, there have been some mixed reviews.  2004 will not work at all.
I have the 2011 version and have not had any problems since upgrading to Lion.

  • Frustrating lack of support for Mission Control / Spaces on Mac OS

I'm posting this on the InDesign board, but this question applies equally to all apps in the Creative Suite.
Is there any way to make InDesign/Creative Suite work properly with Spaces (a feature that has been around for years now)? It is incredibly frustrating to not be able to use this excellent organisational aid with any of the Adobe apps. There seems to be a whole mishmash of problems with it, from pallettes disappearing and moving to a different space to the document you are working on, to entire apps not being visible in Mission Control. Not to mention problems when trying to hide/unhide apps.
When I'm working with any other apps on my system, I can take advantage of Mission Control, but have forego these advantages when using the Creative Suite. Isn't it really about time that Adobe put some effort into supporting these OS-level features. Whether you favour Mac OS or Windows, you should be able to take advantages of the system you prefer to work on.
Is there any word on whether CS6 will support these features? (I'm not exactly holding my breath).
    Thanks.

There is no word on anything about InDesign CS6 yet. (Those who know can't say, and I'm not aware of any substantive leaked information.)
I think that Spaces/Mission Control support is probably predicated on the Carbon to Cocoa conversion. So until InDesign is a Cocoa app, this is unlikely to improve. Personally I manage to avoid using Spaces to any significant degree, so I don't really notice these things. Have you tried Photoshop, which is a Cocoa app? Does it behave better?
I don't know to what extent these issues are specific to the app, or all tied up in libraries that are common to all the Adobe apps.

  • Http proxy for mission control?

I tried to use "Install Plugins..." functionality to use in MC 4.0.1 but I get the following error:
Network connection problems encountered during search.

    Premature end of file.
I assumed this could be because of our company's webproxy. I tried to start MC with java -jar mc.jar -Dhttp.proxyHost=webproxy.xxx.com -Dhttp.proxyPort=xxx-Dhttp.proxyUser=xxx-Dhttp.proxyPassword=xxx
but still the same error occurs.
Is there another way to access the plugins?
    Thanks for any hints,
    Thomas

One way is to install MC plugins in Eclipse (where you have more control over the proxy settings)
    In that case, use
    http://download.oracle.com/technology/products/missioncontrol/updatesites/base/4.0.1/eclipse/
    and
    http://download.oracle.com/technology/products/missioncontrol/updatesites/experimental/4.0.1/eclipse/
If you set the proxy properties I guess they need to be set before the -jar flag so they are interpreted as flags to the jvm instead of the app.
(I will verify that I can get that to work)

  • Messages stuck in background of mission control

When I click the Full Screen button on Messages it becomes the background for Mission Control.  If I quit and restart Messages the issue is still there.  If I quit all my open applications, and then restart my computer the issue is still there.  The background on mission control stays updated; if I get a message it shows there.
Does anyone know what settings I would want to look at in order to make this stop happening.  I want to be able to switch to the space for Messages in Mission Control to see my messages but not to see Messages all the time.

    Hi,
    My Normal Settings are.
    Left  gives me Dashboard.
Right  is normally iTunes in Full Screen Mode.
I run Messages with 8 or 9 individual Buddy Lists open as well as the Chat/Interface Main window.
If I set  the main Messages window to Full Screen then it will do so but the Buddy lists remain on the "central" screen (Space?).
The Main window has moved to the right.
If  go to look at Messages and then use the Dock > Mission Control icon the Messages app is still on view.
    EDIT
Or it was when I tested this first and made me wonder if this was what you meant by "background"
I repeated this to take a snap shot  and can only get my Desktop as the Background whilst the Dashboard, Desktop space and Messages spaces show across the top.
During the initial process I did change some things in the Messages > Preferences > Accounts.
I had spotted two were not Logged in and I also changed the Descriptions for them.

  • How to? switch between the following mission control preference "group windows by application" on the fly? OR have both readily available

Is there any way to switch between the following mission control preference "group windows by application" on the fly?  I would like to turn this feature on and off quickly. OR have both readily available?
If osx 10.9 does not support this, does any one know if automater can be used to creat a short cut to turn this preferance on and off?
Current solution (not much of a solution)
I currently added the preferance control icon for mission control on my dock.

Do you mean the general System Preferences icon? ...If so, it's possible to put the icon specifically for the Mission Control pane in the Dock:
I'm on Mountain Lion and that Preference Pane is in: Macintosh HD > System (not Users) > Library > PreferencePanes > Expose.prefPane
...Drag that Expose.prefPane to the right-hand side of the Dock, say, next to the Trash. Then you can simply click on the resulting Expose Prefs icon in the Dock to open its Prefs panel.

  • Does anyone a problem with lagging mission control?

Mission control (expose) on my MBP (8GB RAM) is lagging. Animations of transition between desktop and mission control mode is't continous. First I see animation of desktop (resizing and going to mission control view ), after that windows of appliactions are rearranged (resized and set to mission control view) without animation. Animation from Mission control mode to desktop lagging too
After instalation everything works fine. I noticed this error yesterday.

I'm having this exact issue. Late 2007 Santa Rosa MacBook Pro.
I made a video to show what's going on (the recording slightly exagerates how bad it truly is):
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sYxcmsvMKlY
The video was made on a 10.6 to 10.7 upgrade install.
I went in and did a complete wipe + install from a USB drive, and the issue was fixed for about a week before it came back. Is there possibly a .plist file or something we can try deleting to narrow down the issue?

  • Why is iTunes window open in every mission control window

I have a 27" iMac with the latest Mac OS and the latest version of iTunes. I have my iTunes library installed on an external Hard Drive. When I open iTunes, every mission control window has an open iTunes window? 10 screens 10 open iTunes windows? This is very annoying! How can I fix this so only one iTunes window is open on one mission control screen?

    Hey llsorens,
Thanks for the question.  Take a look at the resource for Mission Control below.  It sounds like in your Mission Control preferences, you have the options set to All Desktops, which means the application (iTunes) will appear in every space.
OS X Yosemite: Work in multiple spaces
    https://support.apple.com/kb/PH18757?locale=en_US&viewlocale=en_US
    Assign apps to spaces
If you assign an app to a particular space, it opens in that space by default.
Press and hold an app’s icon in the Dock. You may have to first open the app from Launchpad to see its icon in the Dock.
From the shortcut menu that appears, do one of the following:
Have the app open in the current space: Choose Options > This Desktop.
The app appears only in that space. However, if you open the app in full screen, it appears in its own space.
Have the app open in the current space on a specific display: Choose Options > Desktop on Display [number].
Have the app open in every space: Choose Options > All Desktops.
The app appears in every space.
Have the app open in whichever space you’re using at the time: Choose Options > None.
In Mission Control preferences, you can also specify that, when you switch to an app, your desktop should switch to a space with open windows for that app. To open Mission Control preferences, choose Apple menu > System Preferences, then click Mission Control.
    Hope that helps ...

  • How to maintain order of Full Screen and non Full Screen apps in Mission Control

Hey guys, so i've gotten used to Full Screen Apps now, but as a power user who was used to Spaces, I like my windows to be in a specific order. 10.7.2 was great in that we can now re-arrange our screens in Mission Control, however, as soon as I do a restart, Lion reverts to having desktops on the left, and full screen apps on the right (i.e., it doesn't keep the order in which I left them before the restart). Now this really bugs me because by using the swipe feature, I want to know EXACTLY what app is to the left or right of me, as opposed to just turning on the "Order screens by most recent use" option, which I find to be too chaotic and unorganized. Has anyone figured out a way to do this? Below of pics of how I would like Mission Control to look like, and how it looks like after a restart.
How I'd like for Mission Control to look like: (Desktops and Full Screen Apps intermingling)
How Lion re-arranges Mission Control after a restart: (Full Screen Apps to the right)

Shift-CMD-F toggles full screen off and on in Fx. Also, if you've put the Full Screen icon in the Firefox Toolbar, bring the mouse cursor up to the top of the screen. This will reveal the toolbar and you can click on the icon to return to normal.
Get the icon from View>Toolbars>Customize. Drag it into the Toolbar somewhere.
